looking good mate, something I found useful when I rowed at university is to set the screen bar fully vertical if you can, as opposed to having it at that 45 degree angle and then couple this with the cue of chest up and proud, this will put it at eye level, which in turn can help cue keeping the back straight and the core engaged, having it under your eye level like in this video i found made me more likely to start to slump over especially on longer endurance ergs, as the body tracks and follows the eye-line as fatigue starts to set in and form becomes more difficult. keeping the core engaged on the pull, along with a straight back, is useful for taking advantage of leg power. something you also might find useful for getting used to a good quad drive on low drag, is low rate training, try rate 16-18, and focus on having a powerful and fast pull, with a slow and controlled decelerated return to the catch, with this slow return with you getting slower the closer you get to the catch. Use the watt graph setting on the screen and work on making your peaks on this graph as sharp and high as possible. I would also recommend looking up a Front stop warm up, this works well, for promoting more leg drive also.

    Hey!
I'm a physical therapist and personal trainer and erg-rower enthusiast from sweden, the youtube algorithm sent me here! Just wanted to give you a huge high five for getting in to rowing! Your rowing for does not look bad dude! It does look kind of segmented, first legs, then hips and upper body and then arm. There's nothing wrong with that, but for efficency it's often pretty good to become more fluid in the motion. Keep rowing my dude, try to figure out what you need to do to make it feel good for you.
I also started with a very high dragfactor, but by getting a feel for it i started figuring out how to make it work on lower drag factors. Now i usually row between 110-120. I found that setting my monitor to show the power curve was a HUGE help for this. Don't stress if your power curve is wonky, so is mine frome time to time. You can always try to lower the damper incrementally, go from 10 to 9 to 8 and so on. The feel for the catch and the stroke is the way more important that the way it looks! Form is individual and what is perfect form for you, is not perfect form for me.
I started watching dark horse rowing here on youtube, he's very knowledgeable and has some really good content maybe you can get some inspiration from him. I'm looking forward to more videos, this vid got you another subscriber in me!
(sorry for any misspellings, i'm both dyslexic and not a native english speaker)

The small micro adjustments about timing, breathing, back swing and optimally catching the flywheel are insignificant now, as they will come with your practice. I absolutely loved your video. Your rowing form is fine, and rowing is a great exercise for a fellow toting a little extra cargo like you're. You are definitely on the right track. Once you whittle down some of that luggage up front you'll find the rowing getting easier for you. I've retired from my day job just last month and a brand new gym opened up this week just across the street and my wife bought me a year-long membership. I'm over there everyday and rowing is a big part of my work-out. It always feels great. Keep it buddy. You have just made yourself a life-changing decision. Good on you!!!

You're a rock star. You're doing a great job. I'm a new rower too, and as Shane from Darkhorse Rowing says all the time, "this is a weird movement, it's not normal" so don't be discouraged if it feels weird. A few tips that have helped me a lot:
As someone who never really exercised regularly before, I'd get lightheaded pretty easily so I found that if I drink some electrolytes with water before a workout I feel a lot better and recover better. Think it's called Hi Lyte or something like that.
Also, I watched a ton of how-to vids on technique, and that helped me remember the cues like having my butt behind my shoulders in the catch, and pushing with legs first.
Lastly, I picked up some zero drop shoes and that has helped me a LOT with engaging my legs in the drive with lower resistance. You might try just rowing with socks and see how it feels. I was shocked by the difference.
    Good work!

Great to see this. Rowing got me started on my weight loss over three years ago. Lost 1/3 of my bodyweight in about a year with rowing, walking and intermittent fasting. The best part was the improvement in my mental fitness - sharper, more focused and less angry.
You are finding you need the high damper setting now because of your size. Your form is not bad and it is working for you. What I would try would be going slower with less intensity for a longer time. Does not have to be a very long time. Just keep progressing longer and longer. You may be doing this already but listening to music, podcasts or audiobooks also makes the time go faster. Really keen to watch your progression.

Looking into picking up rowing myself. And it's always motivating to see guys in my situation doing so when I look for videos. Great work bud! Practice makes perfect 👌🏽 I’ve been rowing for 2 weeks now and still building the muscle memory as it’s a mind /body coordination. I also ended up signing up for Apple Fitness + I’m bringing this up because consistency is key and after 2 weeks of 30-40 mins per day rowing became pretty boring for me. Find a program, compete with friends, do what you must and keep on rowing!

Good on you mate. You got into a nice technique at stroke 9, 10 and 11 when you really started to reach for the catch. The more weight you lose the more efficient your technique will become and the more you'll end up loving rowing. You're very inspirational.

First off, congratulations on losing seven pounds last week and for posting your videos.
I’m sure you’re an inspiration for many. Keep it up! Your form is looking good. You’re driving well with your legs and keeping your arms straight until the hip swing. The only constructive criticism I can offer is that part way through the video it looks like your slide is moving faster than your leg drive. I can’t think of the term for that right now. You’l losing some energy that way, and it might be why you’re not feeling the drive in your legs and need to up the damper setting. Training Tall has some great videos on form. Watching those might be helpful. You got this!

I remember when I first started back after a long layoff I'd drive then have a brief pause at the back, just half a second or so, before the return phase. That way you get time to get some air in those lungs and can row for longer. I also find that not wrapping the thumb around the handle, just the four fingers, resulted in less tension in the shoulders. Keep it up my friend, great effort.

Your technique is actually really good, mate. Short pieces, short rest - build into longer pieces with the rest you need. Consistency is key. Even if you don’t fancy it one day, just get on, pull 1000m and if you want to bin the session off, tell yourself you can. You won’t, though.
Getting kit on and putting your arse on the seat is the hardest bit. Just get to the end of your warm-up, I guarantee you will keep going and feel great at the end of your session.

I’m thinking the reason why you feel more comfortable on the higher damper setting is because you’re using more slow twitch muscle fiber. You aren’t using the fast twitch which is needed to keep up with the fast moving flywheel on the lower settings. The lower setting closes the damper and there’s less air slowing down the flywheel during the recovery. The flywheel slows down at the higher damper with the air causing drag on the flywheel enough for you to feel the connection during the drive. There’s no problem with this. Use the lowest damper setting you can where you feel connection with the catch. The more power you gain, and more fast twitch muscles you are able to incorporate, the lower the setting you will be able to maintain connection. Your technique looks awesome!!!

You're looking good! Rowing is tough and you need to pace yourself and gradually go from a few minutes to 5 minutes and then add a couple of more and so on and so on. You'll eventually find yourself doing more and more! You will begin to notice an overall strength that comes with rowing that is different from weight lifting or any other form of exercise. Rowing can eventually be used in different ways such as focusing on legs or arms, overhead pulls, and underhand biceps, golf swing, etc. Versatility is what makes rowing unique! Stay focused, determined, and dedicated to that machine. Rowing, along with a healthy diet, will change your life! You can do this!

Leg movement much improved. I could see you are now building a leg drive which is where the power comes from. On the recovery relax your legs let the compression of your legs happen, I can see your heels starting lift which is good. The damper setting in not important just now. Try to make sure you sit-up straight before your legs start moving back to the catch. It looks like your torso is hanging back on the recovery, this is extra work you do not need to add. Good luck. The goal of exercise is to avoid and prevent injury!

I think you are leading with your shoulders there as your arms seem to be coming in early. Try and lead with your hips, so push legs and extend, once you get to maximum leg extension then use arms. This allows most of the heavy lifting to be done by the larger muscle groups and the arms and shoulders come in at the end. What resistance are you on? Most rowers set it to 4 as this is the closest simulation to being in a boat. Also don't worry about slowing down as it is better to sacrifice speed for technique.
