I love my Aviron rower, and have for years now. It's got me exercising like never before, and it's FUN. It can be totally be a hard core, sweaty workout, or a big cardio, steaming my shows kind of workout. Regardless....I'm never bored with my Aviron and look forward to working out, which in my opinion, is the best case scenario there is!
RowAlong Treasure Hunt I have a C2 and I get my engagement from a humorous rower from Scotland who keeps my workouts interesting and time flies! Thank your for all your videos!
Great video. You are absolutely correct. The Aviron keeps you engaged and the Concept 2 is for data. I used the concept 2 in the gym could only stay on for 10-15 minutes without pure boredom. I purchased the Aviron and i look forward to the workouts. It’s also a smoother rowing experience. The Concept 2 is good as well. However, i prefer the Aviron for the variety of workouts and the quiet and smooth movements of the machine. Great backgrounds on your video!
All good points! I purchased a Peloton row (never seen Alex so far forward to hit the machine except when demonstrating over reaching even during HIIT rowes- and neither have I) as I was already in the Pelosphere. I realized that the community and classes are what makes the Peloton a great causal rowing machine. After watching your youtube i realized that there was a lacking of programs that are for more dedicated rowers (ie wanting improvements and competing on a larger stage) so I added a C2. In a year and a half ive put 4 million meters om my Peloton and another 1.3 million on my C2 (I've had it @6 months) and really enjoy both machines for what they are designed for. Great review! Different strokes for different folks.
This was a very well done review. I have never seen a reviewer of one of these "smart" rowers spend so much time on the stuff that is actually most important: foot position, ability to use good form, what the stroke feels like, etc. One quibble: its not just the hardcore rowers that only have eyes for the C2. Those who row as part of lifting workouts or who do HIIT on the off days between lifting workouts are C2 fans as well. I know I have no use for any of these bells and whistles. The C2 is perfect for the guy who is trying for general fitness. Its got everything you need, and nothing you don't.
The thing about the Concept 2 is they sell every single spare part for their machines and it is very easy to work on. They have videos on YT showing how to replace the parts and perform maintenance. They last several lifetimes as all moving parts can be replaced. There are people out there still using model A and B machines that were built in the eighties. This Aviron machine doesn’t look as easy to work on. There is a healthy user base in FB where any issues with the rowers can be discussed. Concept 2’s customer service has a reputation for being very customer focused. I am sure this is a great rower but for home use the number 1 consideration should be how reliable is it and how easily can you fix it when it has a problem.
And that's something that sets C2 apart from pretty much every other machine out there. You do get a lifetime warranty for parts with the Aviron rowers, and to be honest, they've not been around enough to really test lastability. But I would say they're a solid machine, there's no plastic/wobbly element to it!!
@@rowalong The gym in my office building has a Model B. The monitor does not work, but the rest of the machine does. (Though its always set on "10" given that there is no shroud over the fan blades).
I guess I'm one of those Concept 2 users the Aviron isn't for. I don't like having a large monitor in my face. As you can see, the distance from your eyes to the monitor varies by a factor of 2 or so. I'd sooner watch a TV a bit farther away. I guess the GO version (with remote monitor) could handle that. I'm also wary of the pull strap which is considered a "wear item" ... not sure how readily replaceable it is. My son wore out his Nordic Track and did a DIY replacement, but it was a challenge and required special tools and creative use of generic web strap. More generally, is it still going to be serviceable in 20 years like my Model D? I guess magnetic resistance is a matter of taste. I can tolerate the hybrid of Techno Gym, but it is not an improvement in my book. Finally, I really want a calibrated erg. Concept 2 is the gold standard, and it is unclear how closely other brands hue to that. The community (both casual and competitive) is unparalleled.
I think that's the thing. C2 set such a high standard in terms of service, reliability, consistency and community, that I don't think any machine will ever come up to match it - ever! But at the same time, I don't think a machine like this really needs to. A C2 will sit in a gym and could possibly run 10s of millions of metres in its time there. Aviron / Peloton / HYDROW etc - although some of them will break 1Mm - I'd bet the vast majority will take a LONG time to get there. These are designed for the home user after all, not the erg warrior (at the gym, or at home). So although I agree entirely with what you're saying for the service/wear on the machine, I think the relevance for the user base isn't as important as it is to C2 users. As to the monitor - it's weird how the brain adapts. I have a massive TV in front of my treadmill, about 3 feet away. The first time I used it, I was sea sick from the up and down movement of my eyes. The next session - it was totally normal. And it's the same with this. It feels weird for a few strokes, but then the brain adapts.
My wife is very much in the android ecosystem and is very curious to know if android support is coming soon. Any updates from your meeting ? Btw, loved the video and really sold now on picking the Aviron rower. Keep up the good work !
I have a Waterrower with the Ergatta attachment. It provides games and races similar to the Aviron system. I've had it a couple of years snd was sbout s $600 upgrade with a subscription. I understand Ergatta is now available on the Concept 2.
As someone who got their rower for $100 off Facebook marketplace and who balances my phone on a cardboard box while i row all of these (the aviron and the c2) just look so amazing 😅. RowAlong Treasure Hunt.
I wanted to downgrade to the go version because I have a C2 bike erg and C2 ski erg (set as a rowing erg) that I use for the aviron games and wanted to use the same tablet across all screens. Also I use android but have to cast screen from my phone. I really like the bike erg option for the games.
Anything to make the bike more interesting is a good thing!!! I love cycling, but even on my turbo trainer and Zwift, it's hard to get me on it regularly!
I love the fact that the Aviron has adjustable width on the foot plates. I love my Brooks shoes but they are wide on the heel and very tight on the C2. You are so correct in your statement about C2 people liking data. That be me! I would love to have both machines and someday I will get permission from my wife to purchase one. Wish me luck. 👍
Just to be clear, I still use and love my Concept2. But there's room and reason for more than one machine in my world.

That last line is the nail right on the head.

Definitely a strength element on my c2 model b. Lowest drag factor I can get is 181. Usually I row at about 220. A hard machine to learn to row on 😂😂
Wow! Why's that? Is the side missing or something?

Yeah, I’m eager to try out Ergatta at one point.

Haha, Yeah, it's a bit of a spaceship - but it's lots of fun to row on.

Did you get paid my Aviron?
For making this review video? No.

Great stuff! Remember to watch the whole videos to hunt for the buried treasure!
No love for Android tablet owners?
Not yet. They’re developing on one system first; iron out any issues, then migrate to Android. (Or at least, that’s what I think).
@@rowalong would be nice to get official confirmation from Aviron, so us android tablet users know if we can include this rower in our list
@@slamtaztic I've got a meeting with them this week, I'll ask.
What did they say? @@rowalong
