I’m at the end point too and just maintaining. We are older and have no kids so it makes it easier. I have been decluttering for the past two years and instead of taking a full load to the donation center and filling our big garbage cart I pitch a thing here and there and take a small occasional box to donate. I really think hard before I buy anything. It’s nice.
I am basically where you are. It’s worth it! At the end of my life I don’t want to be clutching things others could have enjoyed, because things deteriorate over time.
Yes! I completely agree. Thinking about what is coming in is very important as you mentioned. =) Sometimes I take months to decide if I will buy something. lol
In regards to decluttering or giving up. I thought it could relate to the health saying of "Choose Your Hard". It's hard to declutter, but much harder to live in chaos!
I’m amazed at how our lives evolve. When kids grew up and moved away I got rid of all kid related stuff… then grand kids started and I bought some baby things related to that. As the baby phase of grandkids is winding down I’m again slowing reducing the kid things. I’m actually looking forward to not having toys and etc in my house anymore. It was fun but I’m ready to move past it.
My retired sister has been battling clutter all her life until I shared the idea of just removing 10 items a day (a pencil or a chair both count). She's been doing this for the past few months and is still excited to keep going. She says it spurs her on to go a little further some days! As you always say, Shannon, find the method that speaks to you; it's not the same for everyone. Thanks for your great ideas, encouragement, and example!
This is really important! Everyone declutters differently, but it's about the progress not about how fast it's happening. There is no right or wrong way =)
Every time I think I have scraped the bottom of the decluttering barrel I find something else I don't need. I am not a minimalist, by any stretch of the imagination, nor do I want to be, but I have reached a point where I don't want non useful stuff in my home any more. I also operate a 'one in, one out' policy.
We are pretty much at that minimal point. But because I love to declutter sometimes I just roam my house looking for something to get rid of. My family thinks I am not going to have anything left. I am pretty sure I am addicted to getting rid of things. LOL
Happy Sunday Shannon! ❤ I just got rid of 100 items in the last 10 days and feeling so much lighter. I've been decluttering so long I can't believe there's anything left to declutter! 😂
I've been decluttering for over 20 years - not always at the same intensity. For about 5 of those years have been more like what you are doing now - things here and there as I do my regular cleaning. The last 2 years I have seen that I've been going through sentimental family items and trying to find a family member who wants items. This past weekend, we gave my brother-in-law my husband's grandparents' dining set. It was a wonderful thing knowing that his brother wanted it & it fits in their dining room! We used it regularly prior to COVID, but not so much since then, so it's a relief to no longer be responsible for it.
I got rid of my toy box, my grandchildren would come over and dump everything on the floor but they we’re not playing with them. I don’t need toy box taking up space.
I just noticed last month I no longer have much to declutter! Just a bit of maintenance now and then. Im bringing much less into the house now. Feels great .
Just when I thought I was done decluttering, I remembered a storage bench by my front door. Things tend to hide out in overlooked places. There were a ton of hats & mittens my grandson outgrew a couple of years ago.
I don´t have much to declutter any longer either, but there are always some things that I feel I no longer need or one-in-one-out stuff. The last thing I´ve done was down sizing among my vast dvd collection (yes I´m old school and love to have my favorite movies and series on dvd!). I bought a dvd binder that holds a lot of discs and can now through away all the old covers (something I NEVER thought I would ever do!!), if filled more than half a garbage bag. Feels really good. But it´s amazing how decluttering changes you and how you see and feel.
Why do we grandmas think we have to have toys at our house for grandkids? My grandmas never kept toys for me and I loved going to their houses because I was treated so special and grandma always had more time for me than mom did. Then when I had kids my mom had a special drawer in an end table where she would put little things as she came across them that she thought would interest them at each age. Nothing was purchased. When we walked into her house after the hugs and cuddles they always went immediately to that drawer, excited to see what was new. Simple things like a pretty card she had received, a little notebook, a few clothespins, an old package of seeds to plant, a pretty leaf or artificial flower, an old piece of jewelry, an old pair of sunglasses. As they got older it could be an article from a magazine or newspaper, a book she had read that she thought they might enjoy, a small tool or cosmetics she no longer used, a brownie or cookie she had baked, soap from a hotel, a deck of cards, a family photo. Usually there was only one “new” item each time among the familiar things and an old item was gone. Simpler days gone by. Donna
My boys love going to my parents house and digging into all their "treasures" way more than toys. My one year old is happy to play with the plastic containers and a spoon LOL. Toys are really not needed.
I love this comment so much. As a grandma I don’t think it’s my job to have toys for the grandkids. I hope they know they are loved. And honestly, I think the best part of coming to my house, for them, is playing with the cousins.
I understand this comment that grandparents shouldn’t feel obligated to keep toys and cluttering their homes for the grandkids. I bring toys and arts for my kids when we visit my parents and in-laws so they don’t get bored over there. However, if the grandparents are the ones constantly buying gifts for the grandkids especially large items that parents don’t have space for them, then it should stay at the grandparents’ house.
We are getting closer to the maintenance stage too. All of our kids are grown and out of the house and we have been decluttering for almost 10 years now. There was so much in the beginning but now when we do have things to declutter it’s usually for very specific reasons such as we are replacing an item that has worn out and getting rid of the old one, we no longer need an item for the stage of life we are in, or in rare instances, we made a mistake and purchased something that we thought was a good idea but wasn’t. I don’t think decluttering really has an end date but eventually turns into more of a maintenance phase.
It always amazes me that you find items to declutter every month, you're ruthless - ha ha ha! Hope you're going to show videos of the bedroom and office updates, love those kinds of videos. TY
This type of video is so helpful and inspiring. I love seeing the types of things you declutter and the reason why. I am still early on in my journey of decluttering and have a lot I need to get rid of. I have kept a lot of "just in case" items. One thing I tend to do is keep things if they are in good shape and I have the room for it, but then I see the items you are decluttering and it reminds me that someone else could use my "just in case" items right now and get good use out of something that I'm simply saving but not actively using. I worked on one closet this week and one kitchen drawer and I can see how this gets addicting because I love simplifying my spaces. I took a car load to the donation center today and it felt so good!
just got back from a drop off - tonnes of books and some working clothes that I won't wear now I'm not working anymore - that was the hardest thing - the working clothes. I still have that "just in case" loop playing in my head but seriously - there are shops FULL of clothes if I ever need them again!
Shannon, I really enjoyed this. I find it very helpful that you go through and explain why you're decluttering something. Just watching someone throwing something away whilst they play really awful pop songs is no help at all. I usually turn them off right away. Not your channel though. I really like your content and the thought that goes into it. Cheers
Dawn from Minimal Mom, has a ‘Time Will Tell’ bin. After a year or so, she revisits it and if the items in it haven’t been needed she declutters them! 👍🙋♀️🥰‼️
I have a tub that sits on my landing. Every orifice I go through, that stuff is taken out goes in this tub. I work a 12 hour shift; so while the kettle is boiling I’ve got that time to toss stuff out. On my rest days I go through the tub and have it emptied before my next shift starts. And even I’ve noticed the tub isn’t filling up as quickly or as full as it has been . I will confess I do , do a bit of clutter shuffling. So a bit tends to land up in the loft. But as I go round , the last lap is the loft. So I make a point of emptying some of that out. If it’s been in the loft then I feel strong enough to let it go.
I'm also nearing the end of decluttering. It took me three years of decluttering to get where I am now, which is a very comfortable place. I'm not a minimalist, but moving toward "minimal-ish" and I like it. I'm now working on another load of stuff to take to Goodwill, but it will only be one trunkload and maybe not a very full one.
Good morning, Shannon and Hello to your Mom! I’m at the beginning my decluttering journey. Trying to pare down 49 years of things. It’s a very slow process, as I have to look at everything. I’m working on breaking the attachment. Thank you for sharing your time! ❤
Hey Shannon, always love hearing why people declutter things! I can really relate to struggling to declutter items that came in a set even though I don't use parts of the set. I have decided that it doesn't make sense to keep things I don't use though! I feel like I am still decluttering a lot of stuff, however I think that is because even though I started my decluttering journey 8+ years ago, I am having to declutter stuff from 27 years of marriage and having three children! Also, I feel like I have been slowly changing my mind set on certain things and it is just taking me time to get to the place where I am ready to let go! Thanks for sharing today!💗
Your presentation on your video is done with ease and genuine interest in the task at hand, inspiring to see the process in your home. Thanks for sharing.
Yah. I think as you go, there is something about decluttering that helps you be more aware of yourself and that just causes you to know better what to buy and what not to buy. Prob also makes you more aware of how much space you have and what will fit in it and what won’t. Or you just realize like nah I’m not enjoying that or this other thing is a hassle etc. So in some ways it just kind of irons itself out along the way. I’m ripping through my clothes a bit lately. I find that I like doing that a bit more when the seasons change. And speaking of, I guess maybe it was a year ago or so after a couple of major rounds of decluttering clothing, I did a count. So I’m counting again now (lol) and I guess it’s prob only gone down overall by maybe half a dozen items. (One in/one out ish lol). So I reckon I’m still sort of maintaining near my sweet spot with it.
The decluttering DOES end or at least taper off to almost nothing. From taking out multiple boxes a week, I now have one donate box that gets filled maybe four times a year. Decluttering totally changed my spending habits and I don’t feel the urge to buy anything I don’t absolutely need. I just replace what gets worn out and buy better quality. It took me about 5 years at a slow and steady pace but know that there is spots where everything left is used daily and loved. Also so much easier to clean and tidy up once you fully declutter every space.
Love your videos huni, you keep me motivated 2,500 items now got rid of in 4 years. I think in your case now maybe, your very mindful of what is coming into your home now. Im too very mindful of what is coming into my home. Christmas is looming and ive hinted to everyone not to buy me anything...lol... unless i can drink it. If i buy something now that i really want and need i make myself get rid of 2 items. I dont want my life summarised into what i have stored in plastic containers unless its christmas decorations. Much love xxxx
I am currently in 'whittling down' mode! Today I went through 2 toolboxes and a case which contains screws, nails, fixings etc. I can't believe how much stuff I winkled out. I had 2 hacksaws plus spare blades which I might use once in a decade! Helped Mum do the same this afternoon and she also had 2 hacksaws with spare blades!!!!! Also all my cleaning cloths, now I have just what I need and can get new when necessary rather than keeping things for years until I need them.
I got a few new fall clothing items this week and I'm really glad they are returnable. I try to practice one in one out and there are two new things that don't really seem to "win" over what I already have. It's a really good way to have closet control! Have a great week Shannon!
I started on January 1st to write one thing down on each day of the year to declutter. Right now, i'm up to November 30th. 😅 I think that just seeing the items helps to remind me of the "one in/one out" rule. A lot of the items are probably ones that have been replaced, but even more are just simple things that I've let go of. When the year started I thought, "What else do I even have left to let go of?" But it's pretty neat to look at the list and see the items. There are a lot of things that simply weren't being used. A postal scale, a stapler, throw pillow covers.. books, clothing, random dishware, an ironing board, cans of paint, you name it! That's 334 things and many of them are in plurality. Ohhh the freedom in living with only the items you find useful & love...❤😊 Minute 1:23..classic😅!! I know what you mean. I've had that same response when someone has said something to me in that respect. And I answer in: "EXACTLY, but I don't want that to happen anymore." So with it gone, it won't LOL It feels good to have that sense of control over what you like or don't like or want or don't want to happen in the simple realm of things.
Hi Julia, I think that is such a great idea and such wonderful motivation to have your list of things decluttered! Sometimes we can feel like we aren't making any progress, but if you have a list or some before photos you know the decluttering is working. =) Keep up the good work
Good morning, Shannon. I don't have a lot to declutter much anymore either. I do keep a box in a spare bedroom to place things in that I find and drop it off when it's full. Thank you for sharing again and more important...sharing the whys. Have a wonderful day!
Great share Shannon. I have been a minimalist for several years and I still find things that I kept for just in case. My opinions change and I then wonder why I kept them. When I stick to the one in one out the decluttering takes care of itself. I don't have children at home anymore so that helps too. Season of life has an impact too. Have a great week!
4:03 It definitely helps me... I literally have a jacket in my closet that makes me cooler in the winter, but I keep holding on to it for some reason 😂👍🤗
I'll be coming up 6 years on my minimalism journey come November/December. I too am at a stage where it's more about maintaining. I started yearly audits now instead of whenever. I keep a quarantine box and bag in my basement, so either when I'm done looking at it or it's full is when I donate.
Great video Shannon. I’m 2 years into decluttering. Still keep a donate box ready but its filling up only once every 2 months or so. We feel we’re at a good place. All we use & it’s SOOO much easier to clean/have people over. Love your videos w/mom. (She’s my age & I had everything she did! My kids are your age & happy we’re more minimal now, less to go thru when💀 lol)
I have an ongoing declutter box in my garage, and usually do little declutters like this too! I had a random piano stand but no piano ha. Love your red dress in one of your clips!
Hi Shannon, I missed your mum in this monthly decluttering video... you two make a great duo!!! You are so right in decluttering unused bits from an item purchased, and I always do this... because why keep it???!!! Also, I can't get enough of decluttering and minimalist videos as they continually inspire me to be on the lookout for unwanted clutter in my home. The less you bring into your home the less you need to declutter! Blessings and love from Aussie Gloria! 🌻
Hi Shannon ❤I love how you talk why you are decluttering a particular item it’s interesting & helpful. I’m like you not so much to declutter anymore as I am a lot more mindful of what comes in to my home & what I buy. Missed seeing Kathy she is always such a laugh😅 have a great day 🙏😘🌺
Once again, I loved your video. I am in the same boat with you. This is my 3rd year of decluttering and we don't have much to declutter as often. But! I look around and feel as if I need less in my house. I stopped shopping and used what I had at home that had helped inventory. I still feel there is more I can do. 😮 If that makes sense?
I did a Swedish death cleaning 6 years ago, and I have stuck to the one in one out, it really keeps you in check, whenever I am buying something I think what will you declutter to add this into my home or wardrobe.
Thank you for sharing your ideas! Each time I think I'm done culling items, I find more! This last time it was barettes, bobby pins, and little curlers I had for my dolls. Most of my larger dolls are gone now and I still have a few bisque but I don't do their hair as they have little wigs. Who know where I'll land next 😄
Hey, Shannon. 🍁That sports shirt probably has like 50% polyester in the material mix, that's why it feels weird at touch. *Declutter never ends, really*, and I'm the same when doing the usual chores around the house: I always have an eye on the stuff not used lately, etc., and I declutter them.
I've been de-cluttering for over a year now and getting to the same point. I have donated or thrown away tons of stuff. I just took a small box to donate yesterday. We don't seem to have that much anymore, but every time I come across something it goes. It is a really great feeling to live with less
Hello Shannon I would just like to say how much I enjoy your video's and with your mam also. I am retired and live with my husband and I now declutter once every six months. I have a one in and one out method and it works well for me.Keep up the good work and looking forward to your next video.
I do not have kids and everything, even the toys decluttering, applies to me. Exactly as you mention, when you present a toy I just think in an object around my house. Thank you! Love your channel.
I am about 10 years into my decluttering journey. It started when I was pregnant and clearing out the guest room to make it into a room for the baby. He is 10 now and we are clearing out a storage room in the basement to make into a bedroom for him. It doesn’t really stop but it had gotten so much easier. I loved when you talked about the toys that don’t really get played with, they just get kicked around. It’s so true. One sad thought, my nephew just got rid of all of his toys except electronics. He is 12 now and decided his childhood is over, I guess.
Totally love these videos they do help me go through the process and streamline grabbing things as I see to declutter! Lolol I fluctuate in breast size and I kept my nursing bras and two weeks ago they went into the declutter box I haven’t breastfed for ten years omg lolol !Thanks Shannon!👋🏻
Help…I sold a large “plant” today and now I’m sad about it. How silly is that. Why do I feel this way? I’ve decluttered and donated and sold so many items. Even keepsakes. But this plant is the thing that’s bothering me? 😢
Hi Shannon, another good video…always so inspiring! As for decluttering things that you don’t use which are part of something that you or your child is using, I like to keep them but put them away for now. When the time comes to declutter the base item, in this case a toy, I put them all together and donate it as a complete set (or as complete as you can make it) so that the person who might purchase it may use the pieces that your child is not using. What do you think?
I think this is a great idea if you have the room and are willing to store it somewhere in your home. If the item is driving you nuts then it might be better for your mental health to get rid of it sooner. I know I had done this a few times when my oldest son was a baby and when it came to getting rid of the main item I couldn't find the other things I had saved to go with it. LOL.
I have a question- what do you do with the pieces you don't need? Eg we have vacuums that come with a million attachments we don't use. Can those be donated? Or is that landfill 😢
I know what you mean about the material that supposed to keep u warm but it makes you feel cold instead! I bought an UGG throw blanket that does that. 😞 Waste of $$$.
I understand that =) But I don't feel like holding onto that extra clutter when no one is using it. So I will just keep what we like and get rid of the rest.
I disagree. A gift comes with no strings. She said the person was her friend. Her friend will remain a friend and she has the best “gift” from her wedding a happy loving marriage.
It's already gone Lol. We were't using it because of a lot of reasons so I don't want to keep it clogging up my cupboard. I only have a limited amount of linen closet space =)
It’s nice.
So smart! Being careful about what you bring in is just as important as the decluttering. Protect your progress 😊
I agree with you! 😊
I am basically where you are. It’s worth it! At the end of my life I don’t want to be clutching things others could have enjoyed, because things deteriorate over time.

I thought that was still a lot considering how decluttered you already are. I love when you talk through your reasoning. It really helps.
Okay, I'm getting rid of unused vacuum cleaner parts today that have been in a tote for 10 years. You made me realize they are a "just in case."
I always forget I have them even ina case where they might be useful. 😮
Watching this video I immediately thought of all the vacuum accessories that I never use! 😊🐦
I just noticed last month I no longer have much to declutter! Just a bit of maintenance now and then. Im bringing much less into the house now. Feels great .

Happy decluttering!
It gets easier as you go along! Keep going!
You can do it!
Ten months into decluttering! Still finding seasonal decor to let go of & trying not to have emotional attachments to my clothes😅!
I really enjoy this type of video as it's doable, not too long, and motivating.
Happy Sunday ☀️
Hey Shannon, always love hearing why people declutter things! I can really relate to struggling to declutter items that came in a set even though I don't use parts of the set. I have decided that it doesn't make sense to keep things I don't use though! I feel like I am still decluttering a lot of stuff, however I think that is because even though I started my decluttering journey 8+ years ago, I am having to declutter stuff from 27 years of marriage and having three children! Also, I feel like I have been slowly changing my mind set on certain things and it is just taking me time to get to the place where I am ready to let go! Thanks for sharing today!💗
Thank you for continue to motivate us! 💕💕💕
Thank you Shannon, this video definitely motives me to keep on decluttering….
I'm so glad!
These videos always get me very motivated to declutter, organize, & tidy. 🏡
I'm so glad!
I always seem to have little stuff that needs to go. I totally have to take pictures of what I get rid of; it helps me reset myself.
You are such an inspiration….😊❤️
The decluttering DOES end or at least taper off to almost nothing. From taking out multiple boxes a week, I now have one donate box that gets filled maybe four times a year. Decluttering totally changed my spending habits and I don’t feel the urge to buy anything I don’t absolutely need. I just replace what gets worn out and buy better quality. It took me about 5 years at a slow and steady pace but know that there is spots where everything left is used daily and loved. Also so much easier to clean and tidy up once you fully declutter every space.
Yes! I completely agree. At some point we have what we need and use. =)
Yay! Decluttering takes time, but it's so worth it.
I got a few new fall clothing items this week and I'm really glad they are returnable. I try to practice one in one out and there are two new things that don't really seem to "win" over what I already have. It's a really good way to have closet control! Have a great week Shannon!
That is awesome! I hope you have a great week.
Ohhh the freedom in living with only the items you find useful & love...❤😊
Minute 1:23..classic😅!! I know what you mean. I've had that same response when someone has said something to me in that respect. And I answer in: "EXACTLY, but I don't want that to happen anymore."
So with it gone, it won't LOL
It feels good to have that sense of control over what you like or don't like or want or don't want to happen in the simple realm of things.
Hi Julia, I think that is such a great idea and such wonderful motivation to have your list of things decluttered! Sometimes we can feel like we aren't making any progress, but if you have a list or some before photos you know the decluttering is working. =) Keep up the good work
😊
Good morning, Shannon. I don't have a lot to declutter much anymore either. I do keep a box in a spare bedroom to place things in that I find and drop it off when it's full. Thank you for sharing again and more important...sharing the whys. Have a wonderful day!
Thanks for sharing!! I hope you have a wonderful day too =)
Great share Shannon.
That is awesome!
Great video, Shannon! Missed seeing your sweet mom in this video, but I am sure we will see her again. Your videos are such great motivation.
Thank you so much! Yes she will be back =)
Keep on keepin on❤ Love your videos.
Thank you so much!!
I'm practically done as well, mostly just decluttering bad purchases if they happen or broken/worn out things.
Yes! We are in the same boat. =)
Always an inspiration Shannon!
Yay! Thank you!
Yes it makes sense for sure!
I did a Swedish death cleaning 6 years ago, and I have stuck to the one in one out, it really keeps you in check, whenever I am buying something I think what will you declutter to add this into my home or wardrobe.
Thank you! It’s so helpful too talk through these things. ❤
Thanks for the continuing inspiration!
That is awesome!
Also, the season just changed in 1 week here!... I found gloves, hats and scaves to donate!
Yes I love you and your mom together! 😊
Hello Shannon I would just like to say how much I enjoy your video's and with your mam also. I am retired and live with my husband and I now declutter once every six months. I have a one in and one out method and it works well for me.Keep up the good work and looking forward to your next video.
Thank you for being here. My mom and I will be making some more videos together very soon. I hope you are doing well.
That is sad that eventually we all grow out of toys, but I guess it does happen.
The only area i have found to be difficult to declutter is things my children have given me. They are 27 and 28 now.
Sending ❤ you way, I appreciate you so much 🤗
Thank you! I hope you are having a wonderful weekend.
I love your channel so much. ❤
Thank you so much!
Thank you Shannon! I appreciate your videos and inspiration.
I'm so glad!
Thanks love ur videos and ur mom is a great addition
Thank you so much!
Great video!
Love your vibe. Hope mama is okay! Always an inspiration to me, thanks!
I donate everything that I think someone could use and is in good condition. But unfortunately somethings are just trash.
I know what you mean about the material that supposed to keep u warm but it makes you feel cold instead! I bought an UGG throw blanket that does that. 😞 Waste of $$$.
It's such an odd material and when I tried it on in the store I didn't know till I got outside on a cold day. Very frustrating. =)
Always love your videos love from Eugenie your friend xxx from Australia xxx🏺🍁🌻🏡🌞
You should keep the parts that come with the toy so when you get rid of it you can put it with it.
I understand that =) But I don't feel like holding onto that extra clutter when no one is using it. So I will just keep what we like and get rid of the rest.
I have a pile of stuff to donate. My donate pile is becoming less.
I don't even eant to think about clothes. Lol
👍
👍👍👍👍👍
You should keep the blanket. It was a wedding gift.
It's just a blanket, not a family heirloom. If I would keep everything that people give me, I would drown in stuff
🤗❤️
Toys - things kids walk on while they're doing something else. 😅
Exactly lol
