If this was me going through the stuff ive decluttered, i would find all the creative ways to use it and one by one itll find a home 😂😂😂 This shows youve got the decluttering muscles!
I’ve had the urge to shop lately. Not Christmas shopping, “me” shopping! I don’t need a darn thing. I watch one of your videos and poof the urge is gone.
When my son was little, I would sit with him (normally in November) and he would go through his toys and books to find things to donate to the children who didn’t have toys, etc. He would put them in the bag and go with me to donate his things. That really stuck with him. To this day, he is a giver and very generous. I love your videos! The “why” is very helpful. And the “visual” of what you have decluttered in a year was amazing! ❤
One thing you really demonstrate well for all of us is not storing things, whether it’s for your youngest child or holidays. Plus, you actively declutter & it’s a great example for all of us! I personally love the kid content! 👏
This series are my favorite decluttering/minimalism videos EVER!!! More than minimal mom, clutterbug, etc, though those are great, but seeing your thought process and maintenance is fantastic. I listened while putting away laundry this morning. Usually I find more stuff that day because I notice all the stuff we’re not using & it helps me let go. Especially this time of year I feel like so much stuff is coming in, I really want to balance that out so we’re not overflowing!
FYI … school librarian writing….. Books above kids reading level are good to read aloud to the kids. It improves vocabulary and comprehension, getting kids ready for the next level of reading. Good haul for the month! ❤
Thank you! I agree about the books, but we barely have time for the reading and homework that they are meant to do daily from school. It's kinda sad that the schools give out so much homework that there isn't any extra time for reading books besides the assigned 30 minutes of reading they have to do on their own. But in the summer we have time and just use the library. =)
For one of the videos in this series, I included everything that came in that month and everything that went out. Overall there is still more going out than coming in, but with growing kids, there is a lot of turnover. =)
Oh I know you do. I just meant that some people don’t realize that just getting rid of stuff is only part of the solution. We have to also stop acquiring stuff so we don’t have as much to declutter. I have an aggressive 1 in 5 out because I still have lots to declutter even though I’ve been on the journey already 3 years.
This is great and inspired by you I think I'll start sharing too. The WHY behind our decluttering helps others. Now that I've done the massive decluttering of thousands of items...I'm in maintenance now 😊
I agree! Hearing why something is being purged kind of gives me permission and makes it easier for me to get rid of some things that I may be on the fence about. Great video as always, Shannon. Thank you! ❤
I really appreciate that you consider spending money on a fun Halloween event worthy as it is part of enriching all your lives. But then you quickly redonate. You were paying for the fun, like eating a meal out, without considering it necessary to keep the items just because they were tangible. It’s such a simple concept and yet can allude us so easily. 😂 I think keeping such things as 2nd hand costumes for another year or just in case is coming from a poverty mentality.
I love the idea of “paying for fun”. I did that this year with holiday themed baking molds. They didn’t turn out quite like I thought but I didn’t pay a lot for them and donated them when I was done. I didn’t feel bad but now I will embrace “paying for fun” with other themed baking items and not feel bad, thanks for that!
Inspired by this, I'm going to go through my 2 (!) kitchen drawers and declutter unused utensils. I don't think I've EVER made a melon ball, yet I have a couple melon ballers. 😁 I'm sure there are more perfectly useless things in there. 🌻🍄
I love the way you think about op shops as a low cost library for things! I’ve always thought like this, but never heard it articulated so well by someone else before.
I have been very inspired by you and especially by your mother. She has let go of a lot of memories. I tell your story about the doll and how the memories were held by you mom but not by you to many people I share your page with. It has helped a lot of us recognize that many of the things we have our our memories, not that of our children. I do like to hear why you both get rid of things whether through donation or otherwise. It helps me get the courage and push to get rid of mine. Thank you. Have a great holiday season.
🎄Every December, I declutter Christmas lights and ornaments, giving the old to good will. It's also a great time to declutter old toys, stuffed animals, and old sweaters. 🙂👍I love your videos. They encourage me to keep my life clutter free. My biggest clutter problem: 🧶 Ten year old yarn!
Shannon, I always LOVE you sharing the what and why you are getting rid of things!! Thank you so much for sharing. I truly appreciate the time and efforts you put into your videos. ❤
Rarely anymore do I not find something in a closet, drawer or cabinet I get into for one thing and find something in there that can go. Maybe 3 or 4 items a month now because I've already gotten rid of so much but there is always something hiding in there. I just had to pack up a lot of stuff for a construction project and can believe how much stuff I am NOT putting back. The donation pile is getting pretty big.
I hear you on that! Every time I go on social media for the last month I am bombarded with people telling me what they are getting for Christmas and what the latest and greatest deal is. But I don't even know what to get my kids because they don't need anything LOL. I am going to have to get creative for their gifts this year.
Way to go, Shannon!! I D e c l u t t e r e d a pumpkin almost identical to that earlier this year. I felt bad bc it was a gift, but it really just wasn't my style.❤ I also prefer to decorate in the fall more simply. I also threw out my list of written one item a day items tallied since Jan 1st bc I had surpassed Dec 31st a couple months ago. I thought, "oh no what if without that list I don't keep going .. ?" But I have. It truly is a mindset. I just got back from doing a target pick up and on the way home, I dropped off a pair of denim jeggings that were not comfortable and a layering cami with the same problem. When I pick up needed groceries or other items, I use that same target sack to fill with any donated items waiting on my carseat, and then I drop them off on the way home! It's a win-win. I also keep a sack hanging on the doorknob inside of the coat closet door to toss things into on a daily basis so they'll be ready to grab at a moment's notice when I leave.😊 Have a beautiful Wednesday! The sun is shining here and I'm glad bc Springfield MO has been 🥶 cold heading into December. ❤
Yay! You don't need the list to keep going, I love that! It really is a mindset and I am sure you are in a great habit of decluttering now. Stay warm, it's getting cold here, but nothing like the weather you have. I hope you have a great day.
My parents left me w a ton of stuff. Lol. I've gotten rid of a lot of their stuff in the last number of yrs. But still got an attic full. lol😅 I'm working on pairing down my stuff. Thanks to you day by day.... It would be fun to live next door to you and your Mom 😊
I have majorly decluttered over the past few years plus I'm super frugal and don't buy much so it surprises me that I can still fill a bag or box to donate if I challenge myself. I'm an empty nester so it's not like I'm still dealing with outgrown clothes and toys. I'm sure the decluttering will never end for you at this stage in life with young boys!
Hello Jenny, I am always surprised by how much we can still find. I know over time I am willing to get rid of more once I realize that I haven't used something for a long time. But yes with growing kids there will aways be a lot to declutter.
I always love these vids cause they are so helpful ! I seen a laundry hamper in donation pile I bought a really nice grey one as it was on sale I never used it I believe I bought just cause it was on sale 🤦🏼♀️my daughter n law said I’ll take it for toys in the living room ! I was over and wow what a fantastic idea that was just blends in with the decor doesn’t look out of place and there are no toys in sight 🤗Thanks Shannon love your moms pop up in vid 💯❤️
Since I’ve started following you I’ve been purging and cleaning and getting delivered😂 I’ve been bound by sentiment and that’s not healthy to hold onto junk, thanks for inspiring me❤❤
Every time I see this video from you I wish my husband and I didn't agree to keeping all the (useful) baby items for a potential second one and I could declutter every month just like you do 😅
Hello, I had my first 2 boys relatively close together so it made sense to keep a lot of things (although if I went back in time I wouldn't have kept as much as I did). When I got pregnant with my third boy I didn't regret that we had decluttered all the baby stuff because I would have had to store everything for 5 years and we had moved house during that time as well. Also having a more minimalist mindset I didn't buy much for my 3rd child because I knew how little he really needed. Either way, there are positives and negatives. =) Storing things or having to go out and find them again.
Hello, we probably do bring in an equal amount since we are at the point of maintenance. But this is why I think it's so important to keep decluttering because I just imagine if we still had all that stuff plus what we needed now.
That's what I thought. Minimal Mom calls it it your clutter threshold. I find that items rise to the surface mentally, and I need to deal with them. I can only comfortably keep so much.
I love these videos, and putting them all together like you did today really shows how much people really do let go of when in maintenance mode. We had had several challenging years in a row around 2020 and some of my regular maintenance hadn't been done since then. Our family of eight filled seven of the bins at Goodwill in the last year (plus trash which i just made sure to fill our bins full every week.) Now we're in maintenance mode in most of the house. It's nice to see progress still being made but on a smaller scale.
Yes! I love hearing your story because it's so inspiring. We really do have to keep up with maintaining a clutter-free environment. It doesn't just happen we have to make it happen.
@@shannontorrens1- I have a clear glass snowman, it was a promotional item from Dunkin donuts years ago, I think. You can fill up the body and the head with candies or whatever. I look at it every year and think about letting it go. I've had it since I was in my 30's, when my daughter was little; I'm now in my 70's. Since it's now vintage, ha ha. It will probably always live in the Christmas bin and my daughter can inherit it.
Not related but I can't find your affiliate link anymore. Can you send me your link for the Aura picture frame? You mentioned it in some video, now i want to get it for my husband but i want you to get the share of the price you deserve! Please and thank you!
Hello, I just saw your comment and I added the affiliate link to this description. We love this frame, the great thing is my mom can add pictures to it from anywhere so once in a while I glance up and see a new picture I have never seen before of my boys or something my parents are doing. Wow that is great to hear! =)
Wow. All those months combined really does add up!
I’m slowly decluttering. I sell some, donate some and trash a small amount. .
I really enjoy this type of video…especially when your mom joins😂. You two always make me laugh.
When my son was little, I would sit with him (normally in November) and he would go through his toys and books to find things to donate to the children who didn’t have toys, etc. He would put them in the bag and go with me to donate his things. My parents did this with me and my siblings. They made it a joyful part of fall.
I love your videos. You are such a pleasant person to watch. I enjoy the videos with your mom too. It’s so fun. Reminds me a lot of my mom and I.
One thing you really demonstrate well for all of us is not storing things, whether it’s for your youngest child or holidays. Plus, you actively declutter & it’s a great example for all of us! I personally love the kid content! 👏
Oh good! I had someone say it was too much kid content one time and now that is stuck in my head LOL. I am happy it can still help people.
I love the kid content too!!

I utilize my thrift store in the same way. I really enjoy your monthly recap of what you declutter each month. It’s very helpful!
I hope you'll continue monthly declutter videos next year. They're helpful.
Thank you! I hope you are doing well.
you could also include what you bring into the house to show how less is coming in
For one of the videos in this series, I included everything that came in that month and everything that went out. Overall there is still more going out than coming in, but with growing kids, there is a lot of turnover. =)

Speaking of things that become background and we don't notice them.....I suddenly noticed a plastic snake hanging in my kitchen. Lol
