I just realized taking a photo gives me a much better idea of how the items look rather than just looking at myself in my full body mirror. Also forcing myself to wear the items definitely makes the decision for me.
To be honest, once i started working at Nordstroms, i STARTED buying *suluxy* . These prices are crazy,Its rare for me to buy something full price anymore too.
We think very similar when categorizing our closets and dresser. I have all my “working“ clothes hanging, on one side and I have my off-season clothes in one section and my dressy clothes in another. The dresser is used for socks, underwear, pajamas, and things used in frequently such as paint clothes, bathing suit, or workout wear. I find this keeps me most organized and minimal. Thank you for all your tips and breaking down how you do your closet.
Ahhhh yes, the "fantasy self" items are the ones that I often find creep back into my wardrobe.😂 I declutter and unknowingly tend to buy/thrift others. 😊I am getting better at having less of them but still lol
I know! It can be really hard to stop buying these items too. I am always asking myself if I will actually wear this once I get it home. I hope you have a great weekend.
To be honest, once i started working at Nordstroms, i STARTED buying *suluxy* . These prices are crazy,Its rare for me to buy something full price anymore too.
It’s so funny to hear you say you’ve had something a really long time, like 5 years. My “really long time” clothes are 30-40 years old some handed down from my mom. 😅. Things really did used to be made of better quality. Thanks for the inspiration! ❤
To be honest, once i started working at Nordstroms, i STARTED buying *suluxy* . These prices are crazy,Its rare for me to buy something full price anymore too.
I miss the old 100% cotton Levi jeans…I also miss my “old” body that looked good in them. 😂 Thanks for the encouraging video! I’ll tackle my closet, once again, after Thanksgiving.
Great tips, as usual. I know what you mean by wanting to have a “loose” closet where things aren’t jammed together. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your wonderful family!🦃🦃🦃
Great tips, Shannon! ♥ I personally thought the light blue sweater with the zippered neck was adorable on you and didn't look sloppy, just comfy. ♥ Of course, YOU are the one who has to be comfortable wearing it. 😊 I think if I let go of 11 items from my wardrobe, that would be half my clothes gone! LOL
I really dislike the new, cheap fabrics and I’m so glad I didn’t declutter my older classic tank tops made with better fabric. We had moved to a smaller house and my tanks and other summer tops went into a tote. After three years, I’ve finally got hubby to redo the current closets in the smaller house and all my clothes can hang up now, with space. Back to my original commenting reason….I hate the cheap fabrics. Thanks for your video. Always inspiring!
It is definitely frustrating when new clothes don’t last! I see this with everything. Even jeans now compared to 5 years ago. Clothing nowadays is made to be disposable, which is sad.
Also important: the right colors. It took me years to find the right colors (seasonal color analysis was a big help, although I'm using it somewhat losely at this point) and I wasted a lot of money on the way. I used to wear black a lot but it was too dark and I always looked really pale, but otoh beige, brown and some reds made me look sickly. Now my go to basic colors are navy blue, charcoal grey and white. So even when clothes fit, are the right style and material, feel comfy etc., they sometimes can still look blah on a person. The culprit in that case could be the wrong color.
At the beginning of each season (we have 4 seasons in Utah) I like to turn my hangers backwards and anything I haven’t worn with 2 months of that season starting need to go.
I love this video! I watched the whole thing because it was all helpful. Specifically you have motivated me to give away my mother of bride dress from 6 years ago, along with two crinolines. I had thought I’d be able to sell those items, but giving them away will clear up so much room right away in an upstairs closet. I’m going to do it this week!
That’s awesome! It’s so nice to get rid of items that are just taking up space. I donated my wedding dress a few years ago, and I felt good that someone would hopefully find it and be able to repurpose it.
The idea of getting rid of stuff before I find a replacement is novel to me but I think it will help so much. I'm tired of keeping stuff that doesn't work.
I did force myself to wear a top for a day that I purchased in a boutique a while back and I tortured myself for it that made me decide to get rid of it.
Another great video🎉 I just went through my tank tops that I wear under long sleeve t-shirts (so I can peel off the long sleeve during a hot flash...personal summer). I realized a lot of the tank tops are losing their stretch and are thinner in places. I kept a few to get me through, but most went!
I wear tanks tops under flannel shirts in the winter as like you it allows a little more airflow around my body but also like you some are losing their shape. But I have a couple favorites of a specific color (aqua) and though I keep searching the thrift stores for replacements have not been successful. 😢 love your “personal summer” comment. 😉😁
If you're trying on stuff to decide, maybe it also helps to do it when you are wearing something that you love and that really suits you. That green top you were wearing is stunning, and the cut and colour look great on you - it made the contrast with the two jumpers you decluttered all the more striking because they were so unflattering compared to the green top.
Hi Shannon! I just decluttered my closet and drawers yesterday! I am very pleased with how they turned out! I even got rid of a couple of gift items including a beach coverup I just never wear but felt guilty getting rid of because it was a gift.🙄Everything in there now I will wear, I feel good in, and have just the right amount for any occasion. You might try Lands End. Their vneck supima cottons are my favorite and they also make a very nice tank top. Great quality and last a long time. I even found a brand new shirt/LLBEAN, I had bought and never worn. Still with tags! Wore it yesterday and love it! Thanks always for the info! And congrats on the weight loss. You look great! Hi from SC! Boy mom x 3💙💙💙
Hello, That is awesome you were able to go through everything and only keep what you love! Thank you for the recommendations, I will check out those brands. Lately, I have struggled to find things I like with the current style being sold. I hope you have a nice weekend and a happy Thanksgiving week.
Thanks for the inspiration Shannon I do you switch my clothes around for seasons using tubs. However, in my new house, I’m trying to put things in my closet in certain order. But I have been changing my mind when I try it on, but I did take on the basket idea like you have and then pass things along ❤
One useful tip, at the beginning of the year, or Fall, turn the hangers to face the opposite direction, and when you use the item and put it back in the closet, you put the hanger back in the correct direction. At the end of the year, you can easily see which items you have never used.
You look great in this green shirt, and also the style is very nice. ❤ Thanks for your suggestions. I found 5 items in my closet that were either not the right size or worn out. I had the same doubts on items that I would like to donate, but then I would need to buy immediately at the start of the next spring season. That's hard, but I think it's just a deferred decision.

I thought you were wearing a dress until around halfway through the video! Anyway, your new green top looks very nice on you! Congratulations on working off the weight too... that's not easy after baby #3.
You did great! I really need to buy a full-length mirror. If I saw myself, I would probably be able to part with more clothes. I carry a lot of weight and shape in my stomach/ab area, so I like longer shirts. I know I can part ways with more.
I finally got a full-length mirror, and it really does help. I have always liked longer shirts, too and the style right now seems to be short crop tops!
I get pregnant right around the time I finally lose the baby weight 😆 I just had baby number 5 and Ive has them every two years. It does take about two years.
Living in the great northeast I need so much more seasonal clothing than you. I'm going to give your process a try for the clothing that I will need for the winter ahead of me. Baby steps.
Hi Shannon, before I forget to ask you were you got the top you have on. This was a very motivational video. I cleaned out my closet about 6 months ago and I need to go through and get rid of stuff for the summer season I didn’t wear!
I bought that green top from Amazon. I was very surprised by how much I ended up liking it. Here is a link to my Amazon clothing section: www.amazon.com/shop/shannontorrens/list/19EDLCLVW9H6Z?ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_list_d
You look great!! Can really see the lost pounds. Always love your tips. I still do pretty well. A bit more clothing is needed now that we live where there are 4 seasons; including snow.
I see you hang your jeans on a hanger through the middle of the jeans rather than by a slacks hanger? Do you not end up with a crease half way down? Thanks for sharing that Decluttering is not a “one and done” decision. That it’s ok to set aside and think on some items to save and review at a later date especially if it is slowing down decision making or causing decision fatigue. Great post. ❤
Hello, I don't get creases halfway through the pants, but I think that's because I wear them so regularly. The only time I have ever had a crease is if they sat in my closet, not worn for a really long time. =) I hope you are having a nice day.
You look stunning Shannon❤ I also had a baby 1,5 years ago, so there are few items I hold on to, especially since I’m not back to work, I have no clue, what I would like to wear to work. My weight is back to original, but I’m still breastfeeding, so my shape is not quite the same yet. And I’ll turn 43 soon… not sure what is in trend for a 43 year-old finance manager to be honest 😂
Thank you! I am 41, and what you said really resonates with me, like what is the fashion for 40-year-olds haha. Most fashion examples I see are showing very young people, and it's hard to translate that into a work-from-home mom look lol.
@ once my son starts daycare most likely in April, I plan to meet a stylist and go for shopping together, to start building a new gardrobe. I did with her the colour analysis, so I know that I’m warm spring type, this will be a great starting point
Hello, Some of them are INC, and some of them are Style and Co. I bought most of them at least 4 to 5 years ago the slightly larger ones were bought 2 years ago. Just in case they don't sell them anymore. =)
How to decided to donate or to throw away? I ask myself, “would I buy this item of clothing at a thrift store?” If it’s worn out, fraying, faded, torn etc. the answer is probably NO. Throw away things you wouldn’t buy yourself. You are not being generous if you donate un-usable things.
I think this depends on where you donate. The place where we donate takes everything, and the stuff that they can't sell, they donate to Mexico (because we are close to the border), or they recycle it. =)
It’s hard I live near the beach so wear beach attire such as thongs tshirt shorts but when I go west or into the city that look don’t suit the destination so I need to be better appropriate dressed closed shoes or joggers 3/4 pants blouse or dress probably wear the last the least but need to keep it’s hard sometimes due to circumstances
What about things that are just out of style or that you’re sick of? I have a really cute Nike tie-dye hoodie, fits great, great quality, but I’m so over wearing tie-dye because I’ve worn tie dye for so many years. I’m sure tie-dye will come back in style. Keep or donate?
Great question! I think you answered it when you said you are "over wearing tie-dye". It is hard to know when to let go of something, especially if it will come back in style or it still fits. I think it comes down to how you feel about wearing the item. =)
If you have room in your closet, why put out of season stuff away? Having to take them out again is such a hazard. For my deep closet, I put coats in garment bags, shift them seasonal from the back to the front only. Shoes I have them all at the front door. We wear slippers inside.
@@sct4040 I prefer to only have what I will wear in my closet for the current season. I don’t like to have a crowded closet and I find it makes picking out an outfit quicker and easier 😊
That black dress is a really interesting style but the colour is too harsh on you. I doubt you'll wear it. The pale blue sweater was also not a good colour on you, and the tan sweater colour was just meh, so I can see why they're going. (I sort by colour first when decluttering but sometimes try to dye clothes in styles I love when I've made a colour mistake.)
Agree with your assessment when it comes to the colors. Wear complementary colors that don’t make you look like you are just getting over the flu. 😉 Appreciate Shannon showing how she makes her decisions and that she revisits going through her closet. There’s no one time declutter and then you are done is there. ❤

I just de cluttered 15 shirts after watching your video! They were just in case shirts! Feels good to have the space.

Great question! I think you answered it when you said you are "over wearing tie-dye". It is hard to know when to let go of something, especially if it will come back in style or it still fits. I think it comes down to how you feel about wearing the item. =)
👏🏻

@@SpeakTruthBeKind No, even if you do a good declutter there are always future mistakes, no matter how hard we try. :)
Did you say " funky"? Lol
I’ve never seen someone with curtains on their closet before
Now you have =) Go on Pinterest and search curtains as closet doors and you will see thousands of images.
Ganz unnatürlich gesprochen! Inhalt sicher okay, aber ich konnte es nicht bis zum Schluß anschauen können.
