    The pacing in this movie is criminal, some scenes and transitions felt just like video game cutscenes. But omg the theater experience of seeing this movie with kids cheering during Mario and Bowsers fight and hearing all the iconic sound effects just really hit my nostalgia bias bone just right. It was definitely a Mario movie

      It’s the trend of modern movies. To rectify systemic oppression and poor portrayals of women they’ve gone to a lot of Mary Sue tropes. In this one, it works somewhat because Peach isn’t a native of the Mushroom Kingdom, rather being an implant raised by Toads. It works since this journey requires the Mario Brothers saving themselves and seeking resolve, rather than Peach’s rescue. It just falls a bit flat since the IP of Mario has a formula.

      @@acetofresh1 It's very ironic that their supposed 'rectifying' achieves the opposite of their intention. They only make women look worse. The stereotypes/tropes they presumably fight against were arguably more flattering then what they've done to women. They make women look desperate for recognition. It's pathetic to look at. The heroes they create are never heroes at all, but rather shallow cardboard cutouts. They aren't allowed to even *be* characters because the writers can't accept that flaws and struggles are what make something engaging. Even when they put forth a feeble attempt at a hero's journey, the heroine's flaws are always something ridiculous like being 'too perfect' and her so-called struggle is dealing with people who don't understand how great she is. What a joke. Characters like these are all human shaped jokes. It was kind of funny at first but the longer this mentality of 'correcting societies wrongs' goes on their efforts just become sadder and sadder.
      In this simple story, Mario undergoes a genuine hero's journey. He is forced to cope with failure. His opponents are stronger and more experienced than he is, so his chances of victory are left in doubt. He *cannot* win on his own, but his bravery puts him in the right places at the right times. He needs a great deal of help from newfound friends and allies. His saving grace is that he never gives up, learns quickly, and has something worth fighting for. It doesn't hurt that his antagonists (DK and Bowser) are hampered by their foolish pride. Both of them could have easily beaten Mario, but sabotaged themselves in classic villain fashion.
      I do agree that Peach is misrepresented in the movie. Worse, she is a victim of the mentality I ranted about. She has been made worse than poorly written or offensive. Much worse than that. She has been rendered boring. That is the true death of a character. She's a bland shell of her in-game self. Which, if nothing else, was at least memorable. Being competent enough to participate in battles is not a personality.

    Totally agree. I had a good time in the theater, but once I left I asked myself "what was the thematic arc?" I came up blank. There's no real story there, nothing character arc/growth based--which honestly is odd for Illumination who, even with the DM/Minions movies are annoying AF, still have strongly identifiable thematic arcs. So this one lacking that is fine just... kind of odd? But I'm hopeful with the tease of Peach's backstory that a sequel would give us a full arc for her as that's the most natural "next story" from what I can tell?

    The primary thing I've never understood about the "the Martinet voice would get annoying in a 90 minute film" argument is that, prior to the announcement of the film, nobody was ever saying the voice was annoying. While Mario might not say a lot of full sentences, over the course of an average Mario game you're hearing him make his little random sounds A LOT. Mario's voice has probably been the most consistent sound associated with the franchise for decades. And in addition, the focus on his voice exclusively in the context of a film ignores the greater context that films have in comparison to games, which is to say, in a Mario film, Mario isn't necessarily the sole point-of-view character for the entire length of the story. Add on the fact that even if he's the primary focus character, that doesn't mean he needs to be the one primarily delivering dialogue, especially if he's constantly traveling with a band of other characters like Toad, Peach, and Donkey Kong.
    There are so many ways around just having Mario constantly shouting for 90 minutes, and even all of that is overlooking the fact that Charles Martinet is an accomplished voice actor with decades of experience under his belt, and he could "tone down" the voice if needed. But whenever people defend recasting Mario for the film, they act like it was an inevitable force of nature that caused it because otherwise the movie would just be 90 minutes of endless "wahoo"s.

    This movie ended up being pretty much what I expected it to be from the moment it was announced that Miyamoto would be supervising the production: basically just Mario doing cool shit with a couple of Hollywood stuff sprinkled around a bit like licensed songs and celebrities as voice actors.
    The issue with Miyamoto is that he has a very weird view of what Mario is, and while I don't blame him as he is one of if not the most important creative responsible for the creation of Mario stuff, at this point his vision for the series and what it actually is are just way too different now. The fact that he's also part of the corporate side of Nintendo doesn't help, it feels like now Miyamoto only cares about the money and not Mario as an artistic creation, as weird as that might sound.
    What really frustrates me is that it's evident that the people who made this movie love Mario, and it really feels like they could have made it into a masterpiece had they been allowed to take more risks. Everything that could have made this movie better is already there but it feels unpolished. I actually really liked the movie because it just has a lot going for it. They absolutely nailed Bowser's personality, the rivalry between Mario and DK is really fun to see, Peach surprisingly feels very in character despite having a very different personality compared to the games, and the fact that they finally let Mario have an actual character arc fills me with so much joy. But it sucks that even though they didn't go with the actual plot from the games, (which itself is just a very simplified version of the tale of St. George and the dragon, like with other games like Ghosts 'n Goblins), the plot is still very generic and the pacing is so fast that it doesn't even feel like the characters have any real agency, which sucks since that's always the thing that stands out in plot heavy Mario games like the RPGs or Mario Odyssey.
    But oh well, if anything, I'm happy the movie turned out okay. I was terrified that this movie was gonna be shit but it wasn't. But I will still dream of a Mario movie as ambitious as the 1993 one, made with as much care as this one, and with that pizzazz that the games and the 1986 movie have.

Mario saving the mushroom kingdom because of his brother, rather than bc of Peach whom he hardly knows actually gives Mario more of an emotional stake in the story rather than Just being the necessary protagonist needed to drive the already played out story. The main pacing issue with the movie is mainly because it’s second act feels far more like half of a second act than a complete one. It could have been very fun to see more of the worlds peach and Mario traveled through in their brief montage in a way that utilized the many worlds that have been created in the Mario games, which also would’ve solidified their friendship a little bit more. At the same time I could easily see that being really hard to purposely weave into the story without it feeling like filler. Despite the missed potential to both celebrate Mario’s history while also adding some thing new it at the very least hit that Nintendo trademark of making something super enjoyable, but recycled.
    This movie can be perfectly encapsulated by Chris Pratt’s performance as Mario- he seemed to reluctant or scared to commit fully to any interpretation of Mario’s voice, just like the movie was too reluctant to commit to any huge changes of the typical Mario formula while still having a decent enough freshness to keep it going.

You gotta think that illumination coulda made any movie, and they chose to make this one, something that outside of being fun for 90 minutes left no real emotional impact. You gotta think that there are stories that change peoples lives, Johnny got his gun convinced so many people to not sign up for the draft that it was temporarily removed from shelves by the publisher during ww2, and instead we get something that’s just fun. I don’t take issue with fun I like candy as much as the next guy but don’t get all pissy when film critics point out “this could’ve been so much more” the rotten tomatoe scores are totally earned because when looking at the vast array of what cinema and art in general can be, even if this concept was perfectly executed it would be about a 6/10

    I really couldn't get passed the pacing of this film. So many big plot points get rushed passed to an extent that my suspension of disbelief just got shattered. Like when Mario gets to the Mushroom Kingdom and meets Toad for the first time. He's just gone from the Brooklyn sewer system, through a trans dimensional pipe, loosing his brother in the process and is now in a weird fantasy world full of giant mushrooms, with a smaller mushroom talking to him. Mario is freaked out by it for a few seconds at most, before just accepting that this is the situation. I get that this is a fantasy film with weird concepts, you need to be able to accept that, but if the characters aren't at least reacting to it organically, then I just can't get invested in the story, because the characters and the world don't feel real.
    I have a lot of problems with this films, the generic plot, the lack of real character development, the licenced music choices, but the rushing past major plot beats, with characters going through drastic changes in a matter of seconds is easily my biggest issue.
    I'm glad the kids are liking it, but this film really is just the cinematic equivalent of dangling keys.

    It got a couple chuckles over me, but overall, I hold this movie as the golden goose for why the average Joe doesn’t understand what makes a good movie. This movie was 90 minutes long and it still felt like they were stretching it. I enjoyed pointing at stuff, I enjoyed some of the jokes. But the voice acting was bland, the plot…didn’t exist, the licensed music didn’t work, and no idea was ever committed to. The intro was pointless, the ending was too long, the Peach marriage arc was like 5 minutes long and once again…did nothing.
    This movie sucks…it’s not even good, or decent. The critics gave it a 59% or so and that was too high. This movie needed to stick to one aspect of Mario and flesh it out, not throw 7 Mario aspects in and skim over all of them. We got Luigi’s Mansion, we got isekai, we got the intro to the mushroom Kingdom, we got Donkey Kong Country, we got Mario Kart, we got Mario Odyssey, we got the opening to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It didn’t let any idea rest and because of that, the conflict doesn’t feel urgent and it never feels like there’s any imminent danger. None of the characters have time to get fleshed out. Mario’s parents tell them they’re fools…they get sucked into the Mushroom kingdom for the next 80 minutes, then you check back in with them for the last minute and for some reason they change their mind despite not having any evidence that the plumbing company would end up being successful and Mario and Luigi are the heroes at the end, despite Mario’s negligence being what led Bowser to Brooklyn and putting everyone in danger…but once again, the final battle is five minutes long, so there’s not any real danger because the have the invincibility star.
    Look, I get that it’s a kid’s movie with tons of Easter eggs for long time fans…but this movie is just insulting. They couldn’t find a way to make a 90 minute movie with a single compelling plot point, the only thing grabbing your attention is how quickly things transition from one idea to the other before you can stop to think that it’s stupid. Puss In Boots: The Last Wish is like the 6th Shrek movie or something and that movie was absolutely brilliant, but the Mario movie couldn’t be bothered to try to give anyone an arc. Bowser doesn’t learn any lessons, Peach doesn’t earn any lessons, Mario and Luigi don’t learn any lessons. They basically just go from location to location, reaching a minor inconvenience that they resolve within seconds, and moving on. This is not a movie, this is a commercial, and I’m the schmuck that wasted 10 dollars to see it

      A far more appropriate title for this Illumination bait-and-switch Trojan Horse would be something like "Illumination Presents The Super Princess Peach Movie: Feminist Cringe Edition featuring SIMP Mario and Rarely Luigi." The main "plot" isn't the same excuse plot that's standardized in the games. The subverted "plot" for this movie is; The princess isn't the main center of rescue, unlike what she's always been, but this time, she's the star of the show and the sole driving force of the narrative, and she has to find her army to protect her kingdom from the clutches of Bowser... and oh, random loser Mario just magically happens to show up from Earth, and he's the princess' lost puppy who's along for the ride, while Mario's emasculated brother, Luigi the houdini, is kidnapped by Bowser and is MIA for most of the movie's run time, and oh, princesses _practically_ beats up Bowser on her own while the Bros were just the sidekicks in their own origin story.

    I grew up playing and loving Mario and Mario games since I was a kid.
    I left the theater feeling like I just watched another trailer but where was the actual movie???
    It was a bad adventure and bad story telling and bad writing.
    Mario's entire struggle is that...he got beat by Donkey Kong temporarily for a minute? Or that his parents didn't like his TV commercial?
    That's really weak storytelling. And the pacing was so fast it ruined the movie.
    For example Peach and Mario were supposed to go on an adventure to reach the Jungle Kingdom.
    But that didn't ever happen, instead they only went on a 1-minute cutscene.
    Then Peach comes all the way back to the Toad Kingdom using a Kart in 5 seconds. So then what was the point of the "adventure"? There was none.
    This movie was disappointing, it didn't have much that wasn't in the trailers already.
    Jack Black's Bowser was a predictable cliché, you get what you expect from Hollywood insiders. I couldn't wait for his scenes to end, it was so typical like every generic Hollywood villain that I could only cringe.
    Everything was kinda inconsequential.
    The best thing you could say about this movie is that a 5 year old liked it.
    This movie could have been way better while still appealing to the same audience. It simply had bad writing and a bad script.
    All the praise you see for the movie is IN SPITE of that because the love for Mario and Nintendo is filling in the gap for an obviously bad movie.

    I feel like my thoughts on this movie echo a lot of the same thoughts you had. As a Mario movie, it was all i could've hoped for. Spectacular visuals, lots of easter eggs and references that feel well implemented into the world the film built for itself, the worlds and locations themselves, the score done by Brian Tyler. It was all well done and faithful. As a movie that stands on its own however, i did feel like it was lacking. The simple plot is fine imo as i came to expect that but the pacing of the movie felt way too quick and moments of strong characterization were scarce. I mean Luigi for example is really entertaining when he's on but we don't get to see much of him because he's the "damsel in distress" and while him in that role makes sense story-wise, i felt there was a missed opportunity in having him be more of an active character when he's held as a prisoner. The movie could've shown him grow more confident and less nervous and eventually figure out a plan to get himself and the other prisoners out of the Darklands or something in that ilk. Hopefully with this being the first of several Nintendo based movies going forward i can hope for more characterization and tighter pacing. Even with all that said and its other flaws (the ill-fitting use of pop songs for instance), i still had a fun time with the movie and that's all that matters to me, especially considering how low my expectations for video game movies are.
    The only thing i really disagreed with was your take on Chris Pratt's voice. I was super skeptical like everyone else because i felt there was no way he could fully commit to doing this different take on Mario but surprisingly, i found myself enjoying him just fine throughout the movie. Same goes for the rest of the cast as well (barring Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong. That definitely felt miscast imo)

    Great video, and I agree with almost all of your points! The one disagreement I have though is that this movie is entertaining in the same way the games are. Mario games are famous for being SO easy to pick up and play--no tutorials, just carefully crafted level design that gives the player space to experiment and learn. When I saw the film, I was struck by how the volume of easter eggs and the pacing prevented this spirit of Mario from shining through. There's no time for the characters or the audience to learn organically what a mushroom does by experiencing running into it and then getting hit with it; Peach just has to explain to us "power-ups make you strong, but you lose them when you get hit." It looks like a Mario game but it feels like anything but.

    • @rustyshackelford4224
      @rustyshackelford4224 10 месяцев назад

      Exactly! Thank you! Your comment badly deserves to be pinned because you perfectly explained why this movie fails so terribly as a *Mario movie.* It doesn't capture the essence of Mario at all. Illumation's adaptation is already bad on its own because of its typical Illumination conventions, but it's even worse as a Mario adaptation. Add in some feminist propaganda and tada! You get The Super Princess Peach Movie: Feminist Cringe Edition.

    • @DakotaCityRag
      @DakotaCityRag 10 месяцев назад

      @@rustyshackelford4224 I wouldn’t call this movie feminist either. Peach’s role in the story are a) an exposition-dumper, and b) a pretty girl to motivate the straight male hero to prove his competence (though this motivation is tertiary to wanting to save Luigi and prove his competence to the wider word/himself). She only exists to support Mario, and feminism is built on the idea that women do not only exist to support men.

    • @rustyshackelford4224
      @rustyshackelford4224 10 месяцев назад

      @DakotaCityRag LOL! No. Peach breaks countless character rules and goes _far past_ the female supporting role or simply just the mentor role you'd expect her to be.
      Illumination’s creative team wasn't a fan of Peach’s portrayal in the games and/or thought she had no characterization to work with, but there was obviously more political intentions to this glaring design change than what they let on. The actors and directors have stated in multiple interviews that they believe the Mario cast have no characterization in the games, _believing_ they gave them characterization for the first time, despite mountains of evidence contrary in the story driven RPGs and some other spin-offs, so it doesn't like they're as keen or passionate on the source material as they make themselves out to be.
      How was it nostalgia driven? The fundamental basis of Mario's narrative is a knight rescuing a damsel in distress or his other peers from a castle guarded by a dragon. This concept is completely absent from the movie. If you liked the movie so be it, but it had zero to do with that classic trope or the core of the main character. Princess Peach's iteration in the movie was literally the embodiment of third wave feminism. What conservatives are calling woke now, fourth wave feminism, is a continuation of third wave (women are just as capable as men and are _therefore interchangeable in roles)._ Conservatives are mad that men are now using the same line (men are just as capable and are therefore interchangeable).
      Sorry to point _this_ out to you. Peach being far more overpowering and physically capable than everyone absolutely made no sense, not even by the movie's own flimsy logic. How did she know advanced fighting techniques such as Kung Fu? Who taught her? The Toads didn't know how to fight, remember? Who was her mentor? If she is self taught, why did she feel the desire to learn all of this? She lived in a land of absolute peace with the pacifistic Toads until five minutes ago. Even when you factor in all of what's stated, it doesn't make any sense as to why Mary Sue Peach is dramatically more physically capable than _everyone else_ because this fickle excuse of "Well, she grew up in the Mushroom Kingdom and umm… duh! ROFL!" Because you act as if she was the _only_ person who grew up there when dudes like Bowser and Donkey Kong are also inhabitants, but they're still total scrubs in comparison to her. By this movies' flimsy logic, Bowser and DK _should be_ just around or even beyond Peach's skill/talent level/physical prowess because those two actually grew up in very hostile and militant environments, unlike her, and they have far bulkier builds than her demure, slim and slender stature (this completely contradicts about Peach's established limited strength in alternative Mario media, BTW. Peach is canonically physically the weakest of her peers, and she can't easily dramatically physically overwhelm opponents way larger than her size _head on._ She needs to compensate or rely on finesse or diplomacy or a weapon or something else to _hopefully_ match up with her foes and peers). *Even before* she stepped foot on the Mushroom Kingdom, she's already amazing and far more physically hyper competent than adult Mario was in this entire film *as a mere infant,* and, again, who taught her to be a master warrior when she grew up in a sheltered lifestyle surrounded by pacifistic Toads who don't know how to fight, and why does she act so pragmatic, stoic and militant when she had the easy life and never undergone trauma or humiliation unlike everyone else? Who was her mentor? There is no explanation besides what's in between her legs because she's the only prominent female character in this feminist power fantasy schlock. Everything surrounding this character adaptation was third wave feminism and had no logic or character growth.
      Nope. You nerds, Mario bandwagoners, fanboys and NPCs weren't paying attention to the events of the movie. Girlboss Peach is the only driving force of this film's plot and does all the dirty work, does all the rescuing even rescuing herself from coerced marriage and captivity (I highly question *if these people actually watched the film* because it sounds like they didn't with the misinformation they're spreading) with ease, does all the demeaning, has all the testosterone in the world while also having the most estrogen, has all of the agency, and makes all of the major decisions, even going as far as making Marios decisions and fate *for him* because Mario's _that incompetent and spineless,_ throughout the entire movie even during the movies climax when Peach could've easily beaten Bowser on her own when she swiped the superstar from him and could've used it up herself instead of behaving out-of-character giving it up to Mario and Luigi because plot contrivance. She didn't need Mario at all to complete any of her objectives, including Mario's objective to rescue his own brother from captivity. Mario didn't even undergo a true Hero's Journey because his supposed mentor was coddling him, robbing him of his own agency (and manhood) and _making all of his decisions and determining his fate for him._ Mario's overall presence didn't matter. He was just an ancillary character in his own movie, and he and his brother will always be second fiddle to Princess Girlboss.
      People who still think the critics are wrong _need to grow some critical thought._ You can take Mario and Luigi out of the movie and the rundown will probably be reduced to an hour, but it changes nothing. Quick breakdown; No Mario means Peach goes directly to the Kongs without him slowing her down; she defeats Donkey Kong with ease. They show later in the movie that she can _physically hurt Bowser without powerups._ Meaning she's more than capable of beating up DK without any power-ups in which the same cannot be said about Mario. Bowser blackmails her and she gives herself up. During the wedding instead of having to save Luigi, her primary focus now is to take the star from Bowser. She will accomplish this and she becomes Invincible, and she solos Bowser. The end! Movie over. The Mario Brothers are not needed at all. They didn't even rescue anybody.

      @DakotaCityRag Huh? What are you one about? I was trying to respond to your main argument that the princess was nothing more than a supporting character and that the movie wasn't Feminist despite mountains of evidence to the contrary. She's the main character in disguise, while the Mario's just her tag-a-long sidekick who didn't do much of anything and the very little things he "did do" could've been done way better by her, like all other modern feminist films. Seriously, we see Peach berating Mario multiple times, be the _sole driving force_ of the entire stories plot, save everything, including herself from capture twice without assistance, beat the main villain on her own, she has the most scenes out of anyone else, determines the outcomes of just about everything, including the movie's climax, etc. She totally undermines Mario's existence by accomplishing her goals and his goals for him and also dramatically being better than him at his own job (being the hero who saves people) even by the end.
      Mario was never on a hero's journey, didn't grow as a character, and was an ancillary character in his own movie. His presence didn't matter. This was the classic bait and switch summed up perfectly by,
      Mario: "You got it on your first try?"
      Peach: "No no, yeah I totally got it on my first try."
