    We need to stop thinking of 3D animation as the successor to 2D. They are different mediums, and they have their time and place. This studio is so cherished because we appreciate their dedication to detail in each frame. And 2D animation, in my opinion, gives the artists so much more freedom.

      for sure but we also shouldn't write off 3D because of a poor implementation of it. the new ghibli is just bad animation and models of course its off putting. but something like Into the Spiderverse represents 2D in 3D so well every frame is like a comic strip. People here on RUclips make great 3D ghibli stuff. ruclips.net/video/AjVdhaHzO9c/видео.html&ab_channel=Kevandram

      3d gives freedom as well, just differently. Honestly, there is nothing wrong with Ghilbi trying new mediums. They fail in some aspects, they learn what's working and how to adapt their style and make it distinctive. People were saying that Disney shouldn't do 3d, but they managed to polish their style, Coco, Soul, Tangled were beautiful and didn't lack expressions.
      It doesn't necessarily mean Ghilbi will stop doing 2d. Just because we love them because of 2d, It doesn't mean their attempts at trying something new should be frown upon.

    My biggest disappointment with this movie is how, despite it being a cgi movie, they don’t take full advantage of the medium. A film like Ratatouille can make the culinary dishes look so tasty and vibrant, so don’t understand why they would go for a more realistic and bland looking food for this clearly cartoony setting. CGI is also great at applying cloth and hair physics, like in any Pixar movie or the recent Lupin the 3rd cgi movie. This just feels like a 2d movie that was simply remade with a CGI coat of paint. So disappointing.
    Also, the story sucks.

    2D animator here!! I think the reason why the 3D style just doesn't work for Ghibli is because in this point in time, it seems like the studio is trying to find that sweet spot between maintaining their signature style while also pushing the limits of the medium they're working in. 3D animation has always been a difficult thing for me to work with because you're constantly fighting between cartoony and realism. The entire movie feels like a struggle between the two styles, whereas with Ghibli's 2D style, they know what works for them and so do we, as viewers. I do feel like some people tend to discredit 2D animation because it's been largely used for a younger audience (especially in Western media), but there are some things that translate so much better in 2D then it does in 3D or CGI, because our brains are constantly trying to translate 3D to realism that fits within our real, physical world. Pixar displays insanely realistic renders and props that could easily be shoved into reality and fit perfectly, but then you have their characters with obviously disproportionate features that would look so out of place because we know that's not how people look in real life. You look at hand-drawn fire and it moves and looks like fire, but you know that's not what /real/ fire looks like. Idk, some food for thought, but personally that's why I like 2D because it's kind of on its own level of perception that just...works?

    My best guess about why Earwig feels off (especially compared to the 2D Ghibli films) would be stiffness. With the characters, each expression seems to toggle on or off, without smooth changes or variations of the expression. With the clothes, the cloth just hangs straight down, unaffected by a passing breeze. With the food, each item acts more like a shaped brick than something that can be squeezed and torn. With the worm scene, each worm searches for the hole like a robot and goes in like it's getting sucked in by a vacuum, and her hands just switch from holding it to releasing it, without moments of stroking it or moving to catch it if it starts to fall.

    That shot of Earwig laughing is really interesting because it’s one of the few shots from the movie in this video where the character models have any sort of flexibility. And I feel like that’s the real Ghibli touch: the elasticity of motion. Characters and landscapes and objects are all alive in Ghibli films, almost to the point where everything in the frame seems like it’s secretly breathing. In this movie, they all look static and dead. A 3D movie in the Ghibli style and tone could be breathtaking. Goro just doesn’t have the chops yet to make that work. Or he and his team aren’t willing to put in the effort to do so. Hopefully he improves in the future. Most animators do.

During quiet moments the characters move in realistic and relaxed ways, but during action/slapstick scenes there is a lot of flexibility and somewhat of a 3D squash and stretch, but without being over-exaggerated like Hotel Transylvania or Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. • @leinadlink
    @leinadlink 3 года назад +62

    I can tell you what is wrong with this movie: lack of experience. Ghibli has 0 experience animating in 3D and you can clearly tell, because they forget two key elements of CGI animation, the importance of good ilumination and ambient occlussion. Their shots feel flat because they don't add any depth of field to the shot, their characters look plastic because they don't apply a different light source to them to add more detail or accentuate their features.
    They are applying 2D techniques and knowledge to a new medium, and they just don't mesh well. Not having depth of field could be excusable in a traditional scenario, because you can simulate it by the level of detail of your drawings. You can dictate all the lighting in the scene when drawing it by hand, but when working on 3D you need to apply a subtle yet different lighting to the models or else they'll feel like plastic. Them feeling plastic may also be a problem of the shaders they used for the material.
    I believe we shouldn't judge them that hard for their first attempt at 3D animation, since they must feel like a fish out of the water. But it's clear their talent is in 2D. It would be cool if they learned to make 3D as well, they could produce amazing movies with CG, since the particle effects they have were very good anyway. Or even better, they could apply what they learned and apply it to 2D, you could save up so much time and do so much more detailed effects thanks to implementing 3D software into 2D animation. Just look at Claus.

      @AtelierMcMuttonArt 2 года назад +1

      @@khantnyarhtun2387 Not necessarily that, either. With 3d, you model something and rig it a single time, and then you can use it whenever, wherever, and however you need to. Making 100 frames of animation with a 3d character takes barely a fraction of the time it would for a 2d character.
      Similarly, you only need to light a scene and create a shader that determines how the models receive and display that lighting a single time, as well, so instead of having to render each frame individually, you can just make sure it works in general and you don't have to mess with it again until you need to light another scene- but at that point you don't have to re-write a shader, because you already have one.
      You don't have to resort to slow simulations for fur or hair or cloth- you can just hand animate it, too. But these days, those simulations don't take very long at all- many programs allow you to pre-bake the result of the simulation, after which you don't need the simulation anymore.
      3d is basically almost entirely one-and-done for the majority of a project's resources.

    Really well put! I've done graphic design for about 16 years, including some 3D work, though I would never claim I'm an EXPERT. The two things that stand out as wrong to me in this film are lighting and tweening. Nearly every shot has a very dim, colorless, cold lighting style, as if the room is lit by the cold morning light. Ghibli films always had bright, colorful and deliberate lighting, emphasizing the most important parts in a shot.
    The second problem I see is the tweening, that's when you take two poses and use the computer to transition between those two poses. It results in very sterile, robotic movements that don't feel natural or lifelike - compared to the hand-drawing of every frame you see in traditional animation.

    • @Benjamin_Kraft
      @Benjamin_Kraft 3 года назад +65

      The lighting really is the biggest issue. As for tweening, I think you're partially right. Thing is, almost all cg animations use tweening, it's the default after all. Still, pixar movies look great, why? Since the animators know how to set keyframes optimally and also adjust the animation curves for natural and pretty interpolation in-between keyframes. I think this is a symptom of unskilled computer animators, much as the lighting must be due to unskilled lighting and lookdev artists, and the supervisors can't have been very experienced either. I just wanna point out that the reason why this movie doesn't look great isn't really because of the medium, but the unskilled use of it (and I'm sure you didn't mean to trash 3d or anything, I'm just commenting here for anyone part of the "3d sucks"-crowd to see and gain some additional understanding).
      Also, can't wait for the 3rd part of the cyberpunk docu! Really impressed and entertained by the previous two, fantastic work!

    Here's the thing. I absolutely understand why it seems as though CG could never work for Ghibli. I partially agree, and I'm a 3D Artist. When it comes to Ghibli, they've gotten an incredibly unique and instantly recognizable style in 2D, and it feels like that charm is lost when they switch to 3D like this. However, I absolutely think it could work, as long as they do it right, if they use one special thing:
    NPR.
    For those unfamiliar, NPR stands for Non-Photorealistic Rendering. Essentially, 3D that emulates a 2D Style. Some great examples of this are movies like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, games like BOTW, Wind Waker, Jet Set Radio, and shows like Hi-Score Girl, Revisions, and The Dragon Prince. Under the right circumstances, this style can get all the charm that comes with 2D, in a 3D space. But it's a dangerous path to walk, as it can also fail miserably, as shown by shows like Berzerk 2017 and Ex-Arm. When it works, however, it REALLY works.

Miazako talked about how they really wanted to make it feel different than what CGI could convey at the time. Ponyo was one of the films that leaned into it looking like how a child would look at the world with all of the rounded shapes and divergence from the intense detail of the movies before Ponyo. The background artist even used crayon to add soft details. There is something to be said about the personal touch that comes with imperfection. Not to say that CGI cannot convey it at all. But I don't think Studio Ghibli wants to venture into the CGI world, I think it was just an experience, a cheaper and less expressive direct to TV movie. In fact, Studio Ghibli is practically closed, and at one point or another they release something, but the golden years of productivity are gone and I don't think they will return. Master Miyazaki is very old and retiring, trying to finish his last film , a pledge for his grandson, but we don't know if he will make it (I believe that this film will be finished after his death by other co-workers). Plus Isao Takahataa has left us. Anyway, they are the last gasps of the biggest Japanese animation studio. In addition, Earwig is the first Ghibli experience in the CGI world, they are learning to create in this technology, for the first film they did well, it would be unfair to compare the lack of details and expressiveness with Pixar that is already in their twentieth third film. Besides, I think this is more a Goro solo movie than Studio Ghibli film, the old guard wasn’t there to help. Anyway, Earwig and the Witch is just an unpretentious film that doesn’t stain or add to Ghibli filmography.

    I think if they played around with lighting, it would help as well. Many of the shots often only have one light source and temperature. There's no play with ambient light, bouncing light, temperature change as light bounces from different coloured surfaces or finishes. If you look at games and other 3d movies, they exaggerate lighting to fit mood and atmosphere. It could help bring back some of the dreaminess we love from studio ghibli's 2d work.

    From the first images I saw, I told one of my friends I thought it looked like an episode of Code Lyoko. After watching the movie, I completely stood by the statement. The lighting felt off in a lot of scenes, the character animations (especially the mouth movements) were incredibly stiff, the English dub lip syncing was WAY off, and some of the textures legit looked like when a game or google maps hasn't finished loading in the textures for a scene yet so it just all looks blurry. The animation looked like it was done on a tv budget, not a movie budget. Which is a real shame because most of the particle effects looked great.
    Oh and about the food, I made a joke to my brother while we were watching the movie that it looked like smash bros food. Like they legit just took a 2d picture of the food and put it into a 3d animated setting.
    My friend and I agree though that this movie felt more like an experiment and I'm sure if they tried 3d animation again they could definitely capture the feel of Ghibli. I mean there's literally a 3d jrpg that already was designed/animated (2d cutscenes at least) by Ghibli and the entire game feels like a Ghibli film in 3d. Also I'm sorry but Goro isn't great at making movies

      Nah, all the good Disney movies are CGI. There's a few good 2D ones like Princess and the frog but I always turn to movies like UP and Brave. Ghibli is different, though. Anime is THEIR style. Disney movies can have more than one style to them depending on what mood of the movie they are going for and who the audience is. Ghibli's "The cat returns" had a more goofy, lighthearted feel compared to the more serious movies like Whisper of the heart and Secret world of arriety, which are still family movies but have a more emotional and serious feel. Obviously they're not going to go for the cartoony-ish ness of The cat returns.

    Idk man, this sounds more like “why *this* CG animation doesn’t work for Ghibli” rather than “why CG animation doesn’t work for Ghibli.” This is pretty subpar animation by today’s standards so it doesn’t seem like the best example to go off of for the point you’re making. It’s like saying Star Wars shouldn’t be animated and then using “The Clone Wars” movie to prove your point instead of the later seasons of the show or “Twilight of the Apprentice” or something. Disney Animation’s first 3DCG outing looked pretty bad but now we have Frozen and Zootopia and Raya.
    Personally I think that if Ghibli keeps experimenting they could eventually develop a 3D style that works for them. I’d much rather experience a few subpar Ghibli films if that means the studio is gonna take risks and try to do something new rather than watch them just do the exact same things they’ve always done. That said, I hope hand drawn animation never stops. I just wouldn’t mind seeing more visually diverse films from them, y’know?

There is almost no contrast in anything which added with the quite boring cinematography and a lot of static camera angles just makes it all feel pointless. As someone who’s studied animation for a while now, I think the biggest issue with this is that the studio didn’t utilize the medium (3D) at all. The choice of medium (3D) has to be intentional, and it has to be embraced. You can’t just apply the principles of 2D to 3D and expect it to look good, which is exactly what the studio did with Earwig. That’s why it looks so forced and awkward. I appreciate that they branched out in this way, and I think it could have been much better if they fully embraced the medium and experimented more with it. A good example of 2D to 3D actually working out is Lupin the III. Highly recommend.

    All very good points here. The secret sauce seems to be that in this particular case the medium feels like a crutch. The positive examples I keep seeing here are of 3d studios which used each project to focus on one aspect of the medium to advance the craft. This is the same with the soul of classic ghibli, which is beyond the sheer effort their crew puts into every sequence; each sequence has a focus as if whichever animator who was in charge of each scene had made a pet project out of what otherwise would have been an unremarkably dull lull in the plot. It's time consuming work, so you want to keep yourself entertained with a challenge. There isn't the same flexing going on in these 3d scenes; rather, the animators and riggers seem to have their hands full trying to get a handle on the medium. I get the impression that they didn't have the freedom of mastery that lets someone gild the lilly.
    It feels a lot like the early Pixar tests from before the first Toy Story, which is why that studio chose toys for the first cinematic project. Once they'd master something, they'd move on to a new challenge, lile the hair in Monster's Inc, or the water for Finding Nemo, there was always a central goal for advancing the medium, which would carry into whatever project would follow. Nemo's water made the sewer and soups of Ratatouille a cakewalk. Humans were rarely present early on, and were gradually introduced as highly stylized caricatures at first to avoid the uncanny valley; human animation was the ultimate goal.
    They would plan the roster so that the more complicated projects came later since they would be able to build on all they had mastered previously. Ghibli has already mastered 2d but they bit off too much for a first forray into a new medium and dove headfirst into the uncanny valley; had they started small, it probably would have gone better.

    If I had a singular counterpoint to this entire discussion, it is that culturally Japan is pretty young to 3d in so far as the technology exists in a production capacity in the US. We've been relying on 3d to reduce film budgets for decades and Pixar as a studio has been developing and finessing its techniques since the 90's. And Japan by in large has stuck to the things that 3d has largely replaced here, for example practical effects and hand drawn animation. And I think this is more important than most people realize. If you watch the first Toy Story and (i've lost track) the most recent one, the difference would be night and day. You can actually see a similar development with the blender open film projects. As the technology improved and the talent got acclimated to it they became better and better at executing on what we might expect a 3d animated film to "look like". And to that, I often malign what people expect a film to "look like" because it makes it harder and harder for new studios on the block to try their hand at it. To that end, Ghibli isn't new, but without a doubt, their 3d team is in many capacities. Finding something that hits the same notes as the effect that the Ghibli nostalgia nexus in a completely different medium is going to be difficult, but to keep pace with the times the change is in order. I'm not saying there isn't room for critique, there obviously is in this example, but to imply that it cannot be done strikes me as wrong-headed. Because we will only believe that until it does work because artists are creative types and are notorious for vaulting these sort of issues. And personally speaking, I hope they figure it out, and to do that they'll have to try something new.

    I remember Brad Bird (director of Incredibles and Ratatouille for the maybe 2 of you who don't know) saying that "Animation is about bringing something down to its essence." I think this explains why ghibli food and clothing generally looks amazing. It's simple. There's not too much detail. The colors picked are just the right colors, and everything looks clean. The dishes compliment each other visually, just like a master chef would treat their dish. Some art styles just don't translate mediums too well. I think that in this case they tried to overcomplicate the simple nature of Ghibli films in the first place. 3d, by nature, has more shades of colors to work with, however the style didn't change enough to adapt to that change. Sometimes the middle ground isn't the way to go. They're trying to make a 3d movie but truly not embracing the details that 3d allows for, probably being held back by trying to integrate the old 2d Ghibli style, but not totally embracing that either. Soul works because they took complete advantage of all the benefits that 3d allows for and worked from the ground up. The failure of this film probably stems from the lack of experience this studio had in this medium. This doesn't mean they're bad animators, on the contrary. I'm glad that they stepped out of their comfort zone, even if it wasn't that much out of it. I think the animation team learned a lot from this project, and I'm interested to see what comes out in the future of Ghibli!

    I respect what they have done on the film and I haven’t seen it yet. That was a ton of hard work and that’s amazing but you’re right as far as I can see haha Tbh the 3D in this kinda makes me feel a little scared?

    i actually think that 3D and ghibli could mix, had it been done correctly. Maybe a mix of 2D and 3D? This movie just seemed like a trial attempt akin to monster house(2006) level of animation, which was so disappointing.

      The difference was that Monster House actually had a great story, and Earwig... not so much.
