Jack is very serious about Jack's films.
My daughter is a HUGE yoshi fan (she wore her yoshi outfit to the theater) and was sad that yoshis only showed up briefly in the background. So the post-credit egg hatching scene really got her excited. We absolutely loved the rest of the movie as well though. We were all cheering and nudging each other the whole time when a little musical cue happened or we saw a sight gag. Our family had a blast.
Hopefully, Mario will need him in the sequel.
Aw Yoshi is my childhood favourite too! I've only ever played as him in Mario kart 😂 I was sad he wasn't in the film
I just watched it but i think we completely missed the egg thing, we only got bowser singing the song again inside a cage
Imagine first scene in mario gets yoshi and hops off him to get the finish line sending yoshi to an eternal pitfall
The "looks like he ate the wrong mushroom" was definitely made just to explain that to little kids who mightve been confused 🤣🤣
I thought it was joke referencing shrooms
That or parents. As much as I appreciate the film not slowing down to explain every reference, it is definitely not a film for folks who don't know much about Mario.
Probably adults too tbh. A non mario fan might be confused why a mushroom just made mario shrink when earlier they made him grow

Genuine spoilers for the movie’s ending:
One part I REALLY like is how they avoided the trope of “character goes to a fantastic world and has to either leave it forever, or stay forever and never see their family again”. I know sometimes it makes sense, but I don’t really like it and it makes me SAD. The fact that they can just go between the two worlds at will just really made me happy.
Yeah, that was cool that they pretty much can go 2 either world at will and they’re all connected.
I REALLY like how the movie didn't try to explain everything in the games, or try to make everything make sense. Instead, it lets them be their own thing while this simply tells a story in a video game world.
It's still an ultimately sad trope and I am glad it wasn't used in this movie.
Amphibia... ;-;
ikr
My favorite thing about it is that there’s no obligatory falling out and the conflict in the third act is actually original. I’m sick of movies always having an argument, sad music, then the characters making up. Not even Dreamworks’ last two movies, which were better than this, avoided that.
Wait they do that? Oh man I really wanna see this, that is incredibly refreshing. Takes me out of love with so many otherwise great movies.
Having seen the movie, that final battle brought back fond memories of the final battle from _Sonic the Hedgehog 2!_
Well you can't exactly redeem Bowser when he tried to kill half of the people in that universe.

Because this movie has no third act it just sorta goes from 2nd act to climax instantly

The Yoshi's you mentioned sound like background characters. It's possible they want to do a sequel where a Yoshi plays an important role and that's why they let us see its egg.
Perhaps they'll incorporate the Yoshi's Island lore where the Yoshis helped deliver Mario and Luigi to their parents.
Also, they purposely didn’t include a single GREEN yoshi in the scene, making the GREEN yoshi egg not any random yoshi, but the yoshi.
I think you're on to something
Can’t believe I hadn’t thought of it before, but Jack, have you ever given thought to just-reviewing movies like this? Despite how often we use you as the butt of a joke, you do know what you’re talking about when it comes to cinema, at least more than most I would assume.

I'm not a big Mario fan, but I adored this movie.
It doesn't have a deep story cause the whole point of Mario is so simple:
Beat the turtle, save the princess. It's not gonna rival Shakespeare.
But this movie was heartwarming and sweet and gave personalities to characters who have said all of 20 words in the last decade!
I love this movie and I hope they expand on it in the future.
This was a super wholesome review. I saw it last night and pretty much feel the same way about it. Cranky Kong is one of my favorites, and I was a little bummed with his dialog. I also thought Mario and Luigi's family seen however was really interesting and a cool "behind the scenes" view of what their life is like! Plus having OG Mario voice actor Charles Martinet as both Jump Man and Mario and Luigi's dad made me really happy :)
I almost teared up at many parts of the movie but I only cried once: when the DK rap played it was very emotional and i genuinly cried. YES I CRIED.

The moment when Mario gets imprisoned for racketeering charges was a welcome injection of realism into the otherwise fantastical world.
close enough to a sunshine reference because illumination had no idea how to incorporate that game
Honestly when I watched this movie with my friends, I went into it like “haha we’re seeing the mario movie with Chris Pratt”, like it was a joke. But Chris Pratt wasn’t horrible. I expected dry, bland humour that catered to young kids, which it did have a bit of. An irk that I had was mario said mamma Mia one two many times. By far, Lumalee is my favourite character
Personally as a Mario fan this was something I looked forward to since the original image. It was a fun movie filled with so much refrences and also a simple yet fun story. Also the many music refrences were fun (The Bowsers Fury music being a personal favorite of mine because with how recent Bowsers Fury was I wasnt expecting it to show up but it did and I loved it)
I am in awe that Jack gave like a really fair review and not like a joke review because he could've easily done that. But no, in his own style of review he really gives his opinion on both pros and cons and doesn't mince words doing it, makes people come with genuine interest not feel dejected
Wasn't expecting Sonic to come and reenact the legendary fanart, but it was a wholesome moment in the movie
Truly a legendary cinematic moment.
The fact that both this AND DnD turned out to actually be good movies actually makes me irrationally happy. For this brief period in time, movies made to hook us in with nostalgia didn't either disappoint me or make me depressed because I was right that the movies I thought were going to suck from the trailers sucked. I got to be pleasantly surprised, and I think I was beginning to forget how that felt.
This movie was definitely a lot better than the trailers. Illumination and Nintendo absolutely killed it with this movie.
I just saw it (partly due to watching the first 30 seconds of this video, then deciding to pick it back up after), and I absolutely agree. The score *very* much stood out to me in how it pulled from what are genuinely some of the best video game scores in history and incorporated them into a cinematic soundtrack, using the motifs that fans already know to communicate on a meta level with the audience.
I was expecting this to be a joke video, but it's actually a pretty good and pretty accurate movie review. Well done.
I think the reason they made the post-credit scene was just a Yoshi, was because it was the only green Yoshi in the entire movie.
Yeah, I don’t remember seeing a green Yoshi in that horde at all.
I watched it last saturday and I want to see it again. They knew exactly what they were about and you can really tell Nintendo wanted to be as respectful to the audience as possible
The end credit scene should have been in the brooklyn sewers, and instead of yoshi, it’s wario and waluigi’s shadows walking towards the pipe, doing their iconic laughs. And the reason being they work for foreman spike as well, and they were told to find mario and luigi to embarrass them

“Its a 90-minute kids film, what did you expect?” You know what else is a 90-minute kids film? Toy Story, The Lion King, Wall-E and so on. Not saying that i expected the mario movie to be on that level, just saying that that factor alone is not enough to not have good expectations.

If there is a sequel, it will probably be called the super mario world movie
Hope they don’t Call it that lol, I don’t want the third one to be named „The Super Mario Land 2 Movie“, just because I want Wario to appear, that game-accurate naming scheme would become confusing quick
Also they clearly packed in a lot from other games in this movies other than just SMB1, there was stuff from Donkey Kong arcade, DKC, Mario 3, 3DWorld, Odyssey, New Soup Wii etc (and yes, even Mario World with the Banzai Bill), the next movie will probably be similarly also a mash-up
@@geschnitztekiste4111 I have a feeling that the sequel will be Mario galaxy
Man the end credits scene was so lit fam.
I didnt expect SOnic to show up, AND I DEFINATELY didnt expect to see sonic tounge Mario so damn hard.
