I prefer hatches and although it looks cheezy, I can automate them with switches in later game to adjust my horde night experience.
This is why your skyscaper base in Megacity worked so well because they dropped more then 11 blocks away. If you build a hatch hallway up where they have a 12+ block fall they will not go into destroy everything I usually do 15 for my melee bases. I do that because at 12 they are sometimes close enough to go into destroy everything
The gate - centered is also a good substitute for poles. They still run across the top of the gate and its slightly thinner than the pole :D Also the way I found to make them to stop going into destroy all mod is making your runway shorter. The top of my steps is two blocks long and the runway thing is two blocks long as well. I also forgot centered bars work too.

At about the 11:00 in his video he shows adding a roof on the corridor with a ramp overhanging on the front to prevent them from climbing on top of one another and getting on top of the corridor. It is no longer possible to replicate his exact design on this: it will collapse. Probably they changed the parameters on blocks at some point (mass and/or structural stability) and now a cobble stone structure like he shows cannot hold itself up. I just added one additional set of columns on the side with the overhang and changed quite a bit of the roof of the "corridor" to wood (not the ramps that face the zombies) and it works. It is possible there is a bit more randomnicity in whether or not zombies prefer to come at you via the short land route (and beat on your tower) or go to the stairs. But for a low level horde they did very little damage and I could shoot them easily. Wouldn't want to use a base like this past about Day 35 or maybe even 21, but for the first couple or three hordes it seems fine. I like to add raining blocks on all the sides of my pillars, you can (A20 at least) reach through to upgrade or repair through the railing but the zombies can't attack past them, giving you another block for them to have to beat through, prolonging the life of the base into mid and early-late game, and if your doing the melee base build, consider building 4 of them with the backs all facing a center point. Then when one fails, either from the zombies going through the hatches, or too many exploding zombies, you just jump down and go up the next one. It takes a few for the zombies to realize you moved. And with 4 of them, each one only needs to last 2 hrs each 10p-12a, 12a-2a, 2a-4a, and 4a+ for the clean up
FunPimps: We spent thousands of hours on the new Alpha; it's been out for 15 minutes and everything seems to be going as expected. JaWoodle (1 minute later): Yah, nah, yah, nay yah, I broke the game, again.
Did this build too, and I don't know if it's random, but I did have a bunch of Arlene's bashing the support you're standing on. Eventually they start running around again, but yeah always had a few attacking the supports etc.
As someone making their first horde base and not experienced at building, you skipping through building steps was really frustrating to follow along (like the wedges to make them fall down, not saying how many we were placing, the space between pillars, stuff like that was difficult for me as a new player to follow along
Great to know that the old faithfuls still work. Personally, when I put ladders up to get to my base I also add 2 plates beneath them to negate getting stuck under the ladders when jumping up. Also, the really narrow round pole (I think it's 0.35 pole centered) also gives a viable path for the zomberinos, and is a lot narrower. It's the one that I use. Thanks for testing this out though, and good vibes to you for shouting out Cautious Pancake 👍😁
Tested this first one yesterday, and it indeed works, some of them were beating on foundation where I stood, but it was not even a minor problem, I just afked whole bloodmoon night (day 7).
Me and my friends have been holding out in that one POI house with the massive underground bunker connected by a tunnel. We had more issues in the first couple weeks (like zombies literally digging through the ceiling to get to us) until we got a crucible, and it's been a cake walk ever since
One thing to watch out for with the hatch corridor is coyotes. They can jump over the hatches even with the plate at the top. Luckily they seem to be rare on horde night and easy to kill but a pack of them caught me off guard recently in one of my bases with a hatch and plate entrance.
@@JaWoodle The Stun Baton can be pretty effective when combined with Junk Turrets, Nerd Tats and advanced healing perks (all features of the Intellect Build A20); not sure how to optimize with the new skill tree in A21 though.
Just wanted to come back here and thank you for this horde base build. Day 400 and it’s still OP! 😂 I’ve maxed out my level on the server, so I’m into building my house now. Thanks again JaWoodle! ❤
@@joethefarmer8033 The exact build works until about day 500 ish. Day 700, I changed the stairs to a regular climb up stairs, so the zombs don’t pile up. I also build a cover for myself from the birds and use turrets. It still works later in the game, but I’ve made it shorter and added some pilar blocks under the walkway because once you get so many of those destroyers that explodes and cops, they need other ways to get to you. This build is solid though, especially once upgraded to steel. It’s also different on each server and what mods you use. At level 300, this still works really good. On a base game, I say this base can withstand any horde day once upgraded to steel. You can also make it higher to do more fall damage for the zombs 😂
Is anyone else finding that the first design just isn't working for some reason? I built it exactly as he did but often times I'll see zombies trying to beat down the pillars supporting the platform I'm standing on.
I can see The FunPimps hiring an intern just to watch Woodle's videos and make sure he hasn't found a new game breaking mechanic to abuse and afk horde nights
my thoughts exactly. "You wanna make an easy 15 an hour? Sure what do I need to do? Watch jawoodle especially but also all of the top youtubers for what they are figuring out. Sure."
For the hatch base in A20, I use a very similar option with the center pole as well. I do create a bit of a maze that zombies have to path, and periodically I make them jump up and then down on the pole frame. In most cases they stagger and fall off. This helps slow the horde down. I start my stairs to the height of three and then transition to the height of five, which reduces the rage issue slightly. Finally if you get lucky to get a sledge turret just before they get to your hatches helps with crowd control. It is a hybrid range and then melee base. Not too cheesy, but effective. You gave me the idea from your barn base. Thanks!!!
Nice vid. Don't know what I did wrong, but I copied the first one exactly step by step and the zombies still will hit on the first block at level 2 just after coming up the stairs. They keep working on that level and then level 1 until they can get back further by me.
Update... the ranged base works great! They do occasionally try to attack the second block up into the tunnel, but you can just tap them once with a round or kill them and they stop. Nice work on this!
Every single time a new alpha drops I do the same thing I watch all the videos I can on it just to see the different things and how awesome it is, get myself worked up into a tissy and stop watching all of it, fire up the ol ps4 and play it on that, I start a new game every new alpha, I think you should turn the camera that's recoding you upside down because if you was really in "Australia " everyone knows everything is upside down in that non existence place. I froth every video man keep up the great work
Seems like great combination would be hatch hallway with a fighting position at the front, then do skinny block out front, and make it all 11-12 blocks up so after they fall they dont do destory area.
For the melee base I do something similar but use pillar 0.5 and leave my blocks one below so they have to hop on it. It keeps the numbers manageable but not falling off every swing. Instead of a hatch at the beginning, I put doubled iron bars so a 5k total HP to get through, though it does need forged iron to repair. But not been a problem before and wasn't an issue on this A21 for day 7. Edit: I also put a hat brim over the opening on the melee similar to what he did on the first one to keep them from stacking and getting on the roof.
This is good info. I’m not sure why they just run up and attack my elevated horde base sometimes though. I typically make a bridge design that’s 6 blocks high with a bridge that’s not super super long
nice design, used the end result one with pillars, put 2 pillars on the either side of the top step block and put 2 robotic sludges on those, basic wood spikes surrounding bottom and afk on day 14 horde...day 21 horde ill have working blade traps then and will likely afk it as well
Re: the hatch base If you remove the middle plate in the roof, replace it with bars, and then remove the block above it you can kill birds as well without going outside. You can also just run a ladder up the front to save resources early on
You can eliminate the trim at the start of your ramp and replace it with ladders. I've seen the Zs still get stuck on the stairs but so far I'm having great luck with ladders.
Thank you for the video. Been watching a few different series and playing a few starts - last start was wasteland biome and end up getting demolishers on day 14 - was doing a elevated hatch base, but without steel it was not good. Probably need to go to the killing corridor.
This base has always stood me well, fell apart at 1am on my first horde though even with steel foundations and concrete everything else 😂 Luckily I chucked a ladder on a nearby roof just as a backup plan, didn't last that long though before they bashed their way up and I spent the last 2 hours running and gunning. Guess I better get planning for the next horde
I've been holding off on 7D and skipped all of A20, looks like it might be a cool time to jump back in and PANIC WHEN I FAIL AT BUILDING THESE BASES AGAIN JOSHWOODLE
Love the new spears in the hatch hallway! Wow that ACTUALLY makes spears worth a damn again! The 11 block limit for destroy everything is SO good. Thanks for sharing.
I love ur bases, and I build almost the same. I play on a server with others, so I build your melee base, but I make it much wider and the pole further away. Then those in my party who uses range weapons can shoot away. Any zombie that does make it across allows those who also use melee or fist weapon can smack them.😊. Also with the longer pole for them to run on it let's you work on ur penetrator skills. It's fun to see how many u can kill with one bullet. They line up so perfectly for you 😉
Funny thing I found out; if I camp out at the level 3 farm with the 2x4 concrete silos with the long room on top, I don't get spammed by acid spit, because I have all the doors open and they just path up to me where I have my kill corridor set up.
Cheese base? That's the best base I've ever seen! Thanks for the idea. Why not put some traps below the fall area? But such a simple zombie grinder. Love it.
The only guy I trust when making a base. Your previous one from a few years ago worked great, I have faith this one will to. I’m only 20 seconds into the video😂
Woodle has given me my knew pickup line.. and I've made it work! "You are tickling muh squiz and giving me all sorts of fizz!" It gets there knackers all gigglin knickered like a nutty snickers everytime.
@@JaWoodle Are you sure it not vertical as well? If you have a few moments could you test an 11 to 14 block dropper, just to prove it and not make assumptions?
Arlene searched high and low looking for some zombie love when she fell in love with a cowboy who had no brains in his noodle then even though she'd seen his big flaming stick every day of her zombie life she gave up on cowboy and started chasing a fella called jawoodle
Good stuff. :) Most of my bases are variations of that second base, it's silly good basic design. Very cheap and simple to build for first horde nights especially if using some flat roofed brick/concrete POI and after adding electric fences and some concrete & steel upgrades they keep up even on very high game stages. :)
Hey Josh If the Zombies land in water they also don't go in destroy everything mode unless that changed. Im so pumped for your Alpha21 series loving the Update
Landing them on a platform that has no walls connected to it only a ramp/stairs back up works as well. (basically leave a pit around the platform.) use ramps that funnel them back to the center if they fall a bit too far.
If Disney land, Six Flags and Sea world offered me lifetime passes, Id still choose to pay and go to JaWoodle park instead. Well done as always. Also, your final 4+ hour stream doesnt start for me for several hours (im USA est time) and your the only youtuber where i sat and watched every minute of the 1st 2 and cant wait to sit on my 53 year old ass and watch the last one. Thank god im semi retired. (dont tell my wife) the semi retired part i mean. :) You were live when I watched but I had to back it up because I couldnt catch it from the start and didnt want to miss anything. Stoked for A21. Thanks for being you.
for those wondering here are the materials. i may have built mine a block or 2 longer or something but i did try to follow exactly to the design, 160 frames total (assuming i didn't miss-count) 6x Wedge corner inside base (i put 2 above the sideways wedge60 tips facing my platform for aesthetics) 4x Ramp 24x Cube 1/2 12x Wedge60 tip 18x Stairs and i believe the rest are just square blocks as for materials. mine fell apart when building with wood frames. i wend through approx 1190 cobblestone to reinforce everything in just the drop area including the legs. this kept it stable. this does not include any extras such as building vulture protection on your platform. thats up to builder's design choice. i hope this helps anyone in future.
another awesome base build Josh.. love to see it.. we can feel confident going into the new A21 season with a better defense than Konate and Van Dijk ⚽
Yo JaWoodle try building your melee horde base 12 blocks high to find out if they dont go into destroy everything mode when they fall... that killing corridor is just an afk base now
Now, is this viable on DF? If it did and all you had to worry about was the flying girlies then you have it made! You would still have to deal with fire/venom spit but that should only happen if they see you.

Can i place some traps in the first horde base? Like wood traps, electrical cables or the rotating blades? Maybe at the base of the pillars to prevent them to destroy or maybe on the ground where they fall from the hole, to kill some of them? Or it will obstacle the infinite loop? And about the final platform where you must stay, can i make walls and roof like a room? Or zombies will not see me and will break all?
Josh I was wondering on the hatch hallway, if you build it in such a way that you knock them down more then 11 blocks(like build 6 blocks up and make them fall into a 5 block hole with stairs up) would they skip the destroy everything mode?
@JaWoodle, when you said you needed a distance of 11 blocks to keep Zombies from going into destroy area mode... is that ONLY horizontal distance or Vertical distance work as well?
Heyo! So tried your killing corridor the way you made it in day 7 horde. Real easy stuff just to see how it works. I found a couple issues with your design, so I thought I would share them with you. 1) You mentioned the 11 square rule about zombies destroying everything for a bit. Did not know that thank you very much for that info!!!. However, you did not account for that in the height of your platform. I also made this mistake. They piled up on the base of where I was standing like crazy they were almost 3 sq high. So I think it needs to be 11-12 high. I will try in when I get to day 14 and let u know. The problem is the zombies come from all directions in the horde so the ones coming from behind where you're standing try to get you from below. 2) The narrowness of the corridor where the hole is - they come up 2 at a time and get stuck. On day 7 that's not an issue, but I can see this being a problem on later horde nights. I think the a17 strategy of making the wedge tips part of the floor, not along the sides will work better. I used to use 4x2 of the wedge tips making holes across the platform rather than along it. I will also update my design in this way too. Let's see how that works. Hope this helps.
You mentioned in your A21 livestream you might be getting a pet. Since you're Australian, get something exotic, like a dog. Can dogs survive in Australia? I know in Alaska you have to worry about Eagles carrying off small dogs, so do the spiders carry off the small dogs down under?
Instead of having them run on a pole, you should try using a security grate (centered). It's slightly thinner than the pole, but more importantly, it's immune to bullets and cop vomit.
I was really excited to learn that the Funpimps added "Enhanced Jiggle Physics" option to the game! (Time to go see Trader Jen, am I right?!?!) I hope that series doesn't involve the old drinking glass trick.
I did promise that... Oops
How well does it handle the ones with bombs, or the other different zombies?
@@jaihugz It holds pretty good once upgraded to steel. I don’t fix mine till after the 2nd or 3rd horde. 😅
@@merian_d Did you change the height at all on the build? 5 blocks doesnt seem great from keeping them stacking up
@@joethefarmer8033 The exact build works until about day 500 ish.
My spider zomnies i cant hit, they are like to close to the hatchet so i cant reach them. Do you expericens that?
Is anyone else finding that the first design just isn't working for some reason? I built it exactly as he did but often times I'll see zombies trying to beat down the pillars supporting the platform I'm standing on.
It’s because the zombie waves are finicky and they dont always do the same things. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn’t. 😂 learned the hard way
Yeah same I built a gap between both sets up wedge tips but they like to beat on the main tower sadly
Yeah don't recommend the first build. Haha def does not work.
I can see The FunPimps hiring an intern just to watch Woodle's videos and make sure he hasn't found a new game breaking mechanic to abuse and afk horde nights
What ya talking about , funpimps already watch woodle
my thoughts exactly. "You wanna make an easy 15 an hour? Sure what do I need to do? Watch jawoodle especially but also all of the top youtubers for what they are figuring out. Sure."
Welcome to JaWoodle University! Years of base building knowledge condensed into one video, I love it ❤
Gotta make sure it still works lol
"Girth doesn't always matter" spoken like a true woodle
I tell myself this every day in the mirror
I froth every video man keep up the great work
Australian here, can confirm we are all paid actors and Australia doesn't exist.
25:45 looked like Joshie boy was getting the cold sweats when his inner lewt fiend done seen that lure bag!!!
Seems like great combination would be hatch hallway with a fighting position at the front, then do skinny block out front, and make it all 11-12 blocks up so after they fall they dont do destory area.
I know I'm a little late to the party, but thanks to this build, I have completed the first horde of alpha 21. Thank you so much :)
It appears that this has been patched. they immediately went after the base of my platform, and tore it out from under me.
22:41 Welcome to 7 days to 🦆 A21, where Josh is still trying to throw his spear.
quack
I typically make a bridge design that’s 6 blocks high with a bridge that’s not super super long
First protocol: Test out all the new window/door/block shapes they added. I guarantee there's some with funky pathing on em.
nice design, used the end result one with pillars, put 2 pillars on the either side of the top step block and put 2 robotic sludges on those, basic wood spikes surrounding bottom and afk on day 14 horde...day 21 horde ill have working blade traps then and will likely afk it as well
Always love a JaWoodle Park episode!! Nice to see you can still break it on the first real attempt lmao
Re: the hatch base
If you remove the middle plate in the roof, replace it with bars, and then remove the block above it you can kill birds as well without going outside.
Love these. You should make sure the new forcefield still works. The FP love doing things to thwart cheese. Yours in particular
Thanks for all the amazing information, entertaining videos and pure fun over the years.. You are AWESOME!!
Woodle's giblets have gone raw with all the likes we've been giving him.
thats just awesome! between that and a house with a fire trap i can just afk hoard night lol
More or less yeah!
Woodle has given me my knew pickup line.. and I've made it work! "You are tickling muh squiz and giving me all sorts of fizz!" It gets there knackers all gigglin knickered like a nutty snickers everytime.
Does 11 block distance include vertical distance? Perhaps you can build 12 levels up.
Nah only horizontal
@@JaWoodle Are you sure it not vertical as well? If you have a few moments could you test an 11 to 14 block dropper, just to prove it and not make assumptions?
@@havic2259 Jawoodle has made many pit bases, some with deep 20-30 blocks falls
I do believe vertical works too. you have to make sure they still have a path to you that is not more then 24 blocks. atleast that worked in alpha 20
JaWoodle is incorrect. It does work vertically. I do it all the time using the "unclimbable ladder" from CautiosPancake videos
Arlene searched high and low looking for some zombie love
when she fell in love with a cowboy who had no brains in his noodle
then even though she'd seen his big flaming stick every day of her zombie life
she gave up on cowboy and started chasing a fella called jawoodle
Good stuff. :) Most of my bases are variations of that second base, it's silly good basic design. Very cheap and simple to build for first horde nights especially if using some flat roofed brick/concrete POI and after adding electric fences and some concrete & steel upgrades they keep up even on very high game stages. :)
This is life saving, literally lol. Thank you!!
The melee base, possibly be stretched out for the 'sweet' length of 11 long to stop the rage mode. Great video.
4:29 is Wedge Inside Corner Base
Thanks for being you.
for those wondering here are the materials. i may have built mine a block or 2 longer or something but i did try to follow exactly to the design,
160 frames total (assuming i didn't miss-count)
6x Wedge corner inside base (i put 2 above the sideways wedge60 tips facing my platform for aesthetics)
4x Ramp
24x Cube 1/2
12x Wedge60 tip
18x Stairs
and i believe the rest are just square blocks
as for materials. mine fell apart when building with wood frames. i wend through approx 1190 cobblestone to reinforce everything in just the drop area including the legs. this kept it stable.
this does not include any extras such as building vulture protection on your platform. thats up to builder's design choice. i hope this helps anyone in future.
Josh, if you rotate those center poles, would the zombies path through them?
can you please yell even louder in future videos?
Makes perfect sense that Arliene wants to destroy everything only when she is within 11 blocks of Woodle.
Blood moons are red, JaWoodle is blue, Mustache man ran off with Jen, and he took Deedee with him, too!
(Long time fan of your work, mate!)
another awesome base build Josh.. love to see it.. we can feel confident going into the new A21 season with a better defense than Konate and Van Dijk ⚽
Is the 11 block range to avoid destroy area only horizontal?
Or could you make the melee tower taller to avoid it?
Vertical also works
Yo JaWoodle try building your melee horde base 12 blocks high to find out if they dont go into destroy everything mode when they fall...
that killing corridor is just an afk base now
Now, is this viable on DF? If it did and all you had to worry about was the flying girlies then you have it made! You would still have to deal with fire/venom spit but that should only happen if they see you.
I don't see why it wouldn't be
Everytime we're in Jawoodle Park, I can only think about how much I enjoyed Zombie Plinko.
You could build your melee base twelve high.
That would mean that when they fall, they would not enter destroy everything mode.
Okay, Joshy!!! You didn't outline any rules to this subjective contest to make you laugh, so here goes my attempts to make you laugh...

Arlene loves trying out the woodle shaft hallway. I think she approves of his sudden growth. Perhaps enough to forget the cowboy 😆
As far as im aware it doesnt work vertically, only horizontally
Jawoodle bases never expire. They just get better with age

Great vid! Just you wait, first patch - both flame trap and 11 block rage distance are gonna get patched :(
@JaWoodle, when you said you needed a distance of 11 blocks to keep Zombies from going into destroy area mode... is that ONLY horizontal distance or Vertical distance work as well?
Only horizontal!
@@JaWoodle Okay, so only hung like a pencil not a hockey puck.
Jawoodle: Makes yet another game-breaking afk horde base design.
The Fun Pimps: "Write that down, write that down!
Good episode, thanks Jawoodle
My favorite part about A21 is the new cold water mushrooms ;)
Literally one of the best games Out there
I was really excited to learn that the Funpimps added "Enhanced Jiggle Physics" option to the game! (Time to go see Trader Jen, am I right?!?!) But was disappointed to learn that all it does is make the players feet bigger and flop around more when you run. Thanks for another ruined dream, Funpimps. And for making me look like a duck when I'm fleeing from a zombie bear.

So here i am, standing right outside the gates with no way in. But i've heard that the Fun Dukes gave you spare keys for Navezgane, could you be a dear and send me one so we can keep hanging out together again? 💜

on the second base, if you did a pit 11 blocks down for them to fall in with a path to climb out they wont ever go into wreckhead mode
When Arlene just stood there, she looked confused as a hungry baby at a nudist beach.
Love the video you made here.. Good demonstration. Might try doing this. Though it might be simple to make even without the mods and such. Of course more work. Would you recommend doing the 7 days or longer or should I do longer days?
Fantastic! Thank you!
