I disagree, I have had a cold air intake raise my top speed on a vehicle. Before I could not go over 127, after I hit 144 only single change. Even the temperature outside was with in 4-5 degrees, on the exact same road. That intake added mph so therefore it added HP. BTW, no tune was done.
@@natturnerlearner167 to be specific the car was a 2000 Civic Si, and yes with only an AEM cold air intake it could redline 5th gear, 144 MPH. It also took .3 off in the 1/4 mile.
Cold air intakes do absolutely nothing. You stock air box takes air from below the bay and now your taking hot air from the motor, even if it added 3-5hp, at 400$ that’s a fail in my books.
I really like the Black K&N CAI, but the MOPAR CAI, IMO is what I think I am leaning towards. A CAI might not give you a huge power gain, but it does make for a very nice throaty sound.

Or, run it on the dyno before adding the cold air intake then after without tuning. That would show legitimate HP gains for the add-on only. Then you could throw in the tune to get total HP Gains.
This is a short ram intake. Cold air intakes hang all the way down to your bumper. Hence the name cold air intake. This one breaths hot air from the engine bay. Despite the heat shield. It's still hot.
Big wheels and tires will rob power that’s a given I’ve had multiple ram trucks the last one I put on the Dino was a 2009 with a five speed it made 300 stock and with a tune it made 319 And for that matter some Dynos will show low or high depending on the brand The one we were using was calibrated very well
People don't buy into the marketing BS of K&N and CAI. Your factory intake is designed by ENGINEERS...leave it alone it works just fine. Noticed how they did dyno test with a tune. Why not do a dyno test without a tune to see how much HP is really gained.
Engineers also work at these companies. Honestly CAI systems vary from vehicle to vehicle. I've seen some lose HP and some gain it. I've also seen others that gain some but it's way up top. For example. I had a friend with an 02 Mustang GT Dyno after just an intake and gained a little over 6hp, I had a Ford Ranger 3.0L lose 2hp and I had a Grand Cherokee 4.7 HO that gained 13HP but it was almost at redline. They're hit or miss honestly and for 3-400 for one I'd much rather just get a programmer and leave it be. Or an exhaust and programmer to get the sound and gain a little.
Lionfish Hunter the “engineers” have different goals in mind. Engineers also design the shitty stock muffler... why? To be nice and mushy and quiet so everyone is happy. Yes, 90% of the gains were probably the tune. But an aftermarket intake will help. Up to you if it’s worth hundreds of dollars or not.
Most "Cold" air intakes pull air from inside the hot engine bay while most stock intakes pull air from the cooler area between the inner and outer fender. Restrictive yes but colder air. Better to get the Mopar kit to go with the sport hood. Functional hood scoop and less restriction.
Ram air or a true cold air intake like LMR makes for the Chargers. Most intake companies that make intakes like the one in this video claim that the weather strip and heat shield block out the heat when the hood is shut but that’s a crock. These kits typically cost over $300 and actually add weight to the vehicle too. Best bang for the buck is just a drop in K&N. Typically under $60, barely any heavier than stock and actually yields wheel hp gains because it doesn’t get heat soaked and draws cooler air from the fender through the factory air box.
I had a 77 series on my 2010. I just got a used 2013 and I’m curious how the Blackhawk compares to the series 77. I’m sure it’s not by much if any but which one has the better Gains ? I’m finding that 77 is a few dollars more than the Blackhawk. I was happy with the 77 and they really gave an awesome sound engine so I definitely want to keep that aggressive sound but would like to get the Blackhawk if it’s not much different than the 77
When K&N makes a filter that takes out particles as low as the original equipment filters. I will consider buying. Why would I want dirty air going into my valve train?
Hi guys, quick question for you,I loved the video and I am looking at installing the same cold air intake on my 2013 ram with a 5.7 hemi. I was also looking at changing my throttlebody to 187 mm and changing my thermostat to 180° thermostat. My question is do I need a tuner when I am done For it to run properly or am I good for a while without tuning it?
Experienced mechanics say adding these types of "upgrades" will throw everything out of whack in the long run. The entire vehicle functions and is designed as one. Similar with the human body when surgery replacement of an organ. The foreign organ is always rejected and the person must take all sorts of drugs so the body might, for a while at least, not die.
Hi! Great K & N demo Vid! Should we actually use some Silicone Adhesive to "hold down" the weather stripping along the heat shield, or was it going on pretty tight? Was afraid I'd be looking at a rubbery chewed up snake mess under the hood on a hot summer day just off the side of the California 405 traffic nightmare fwy if I leave it be (and the weather stripping got loose).
Do you recommend replacing the mock intakes on the sport hood, to functional ones allowing air into the hood? I’ve seen guys take them out and drill holes in the mock intake pieces to make them functional. What do you think?
Hey, CJ! I would try disconnecting the battery if you haven't done so already, and let the power in the truck drain for a couple minutes before re-attaching and restarting. Sometimes that and letting the truck have some time to adjust to the new intake is needed for things to run properly. Also make sure all sensors and lines have been reattached properly. If you're still experiencing issues, give us a call at 1-888-706-1096 and we'll be happy to take care of you! -Zach
If you ALMOST close your hood and peek inside, you’ll see the hood doesn’t NEARLY close down on the heat shield. There was about 1-1/2” gap above it; PLUS the big gap where the A/C pipes go through= useless heat shield. On my 2019, I bought a $70 K&N cone filter and just stuck it on the end of my intake pipe. Same thing, but $400 less! Come on K&N, this setup is so Mickey Mouse! 🙄🙄🙄
How does this compare to the Series 77? The high flow!! This one seems to be about $20 cheaper. I’ve had the 77 before and it had an awesome sound when accelerating and I’m curious if the Blackhawk will be equal.
Great science, let's measure it on a dynamic after we install a filter AND tune it... how about you show the truck after you tune it and put the stock filter back on?
I bought 4 K&N system's an I had to bring them back to the store. The pipe is 1/2 inch to small. It don't fit on the filter itself. I would like to know were to buy one.
Just changing the air filter is not going to give you that much more horsepower there's just no way if that was true people that drag race stock automobiles would take their air filter off before each run. . You're not going to get any more air flow than what the computer will let go in there
Maybe take the exhaust manifold completely off engine and run it like that plus maybe a 12 inch diameter intake hose that's 1 inch long from throttle body so no curves at all for airflow before entering intake. And maybe get 2-5hp gain.
