I will defend this movie until the end of time. It's fun, has great performances and an utterly incredible score.
The new show is pathetic. While the 1984 one is interesting, I'd love to see a version of Supergirl that was hilariously funny. From the original comics, you honestly could make her one of the funniest heroines of all time.
It's not incredible, the script it unbelievably bad but the actress looks great and it's a shame it's the last time she played the role. There was a lot of potential here. It was not her fault that no one could write a decent script. Not great, at least decent would've beed a huge improvement over this

me too! i'm 42 and i was 2 when it was released and growing up this was my favorite superhero movie and supergirl will always be my favorite hero!
This is one of my favourites. Kids in my neighbourhood all loved this movie when it got released all those years back.
Helen Slater is just fantastic here. And Faye Dunaway and Brenda Vacarro are brilliant and hilarious together.

I am in love with the guy saying "you cannn.....onguuurrr" lmao.. when she says "I can't" at the very beginning...And then she immediately gets the strength and makes that amazing "eeeyaaahh"! And the monster scream is definitely way up there too. Sounds like such a real monster lmao

@@sesanti Lol. Your recent means the Star Wars in the millennia. So I'll be specific here. A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Terminator and Terminator 2 Judgment Day. They are waaaaaaaaayy better than Supergirl. Hell, Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith are better than Supergirl. And to this day I still watch Supergirl. Both, the movie AND the T.V. show.
They picked a great Supergirl for sure !

Loving the power of Jerry Goldsmith. What's even funnier is that Donner wanted Goldsmith to score "Superman"(hence their amazing collaboration on "The Omen", Goldsmith's only Oscar win for an awesome film score). So this could've been the score to "Superman". Just to be clear, John Williams did an amazing job scoring "Superman".
Zaltar’s words always make me tear up. And 1:37 is simply perfect.

I myself am friends with Susan Gallagher who plays the Homeless woman on Cobra Kai on facebook and she is very sweet and a very nice southern gal

Although she was a great choice for the part I still think that she would've done a bit better if they (both her and the directors) made he a bit more masculine and made her little an insy bit ruthless at times. Own opinion but I feel it would've made the character a bit more.

Peter O'Toole was the Liam Neeson ala Qui Gon Jinn of this flick
I was a kid when I saw this movie. By today's movies, it was cringey. But that's how movies generally were back in the 80's. That's how the acting was. It wasn't a bad bad movie; it's just how movies were. It's a childhood classic for the average 40yo.
Linda's and Ethan's love story always gets me. I know this movie didn't fare well but it's still great.
@Edd Power I kind of felt bad for Ethan at the end when Supergirl was trying to say how Linda left and with Ethan saying "you don't have to say a word, I know" which was his way of saying that he knows that Supergirl herself is Linda knowing she and Linda together belong on a different planet. Plus in the next scene not shown here, it was sad to see him looking up at Supergirl flying away saying "goodbye Linda" and then he walked away like he was thinking "I guess I have to move on now" where maybe he went back to his job at the girls school since he's works as the groundskeeper at the school.
@@afriendofbean I know the scene you're talking about when he looks up. It is very sad. And you could tell too that she was just as out of her mind about him. The love theme in their scenes makes it all the more sad too.
@@eddpower5425 I agree, it's very sad probably feeling that he has to move on to look for another woman to marry since he said that he wants to marry Linda all because Selena secretly put a love poison in his drink. Also yes, I can tell that Supergirl who is also Linda was kind of in love with him too but, she knew she couldn't get attached to him since she doesn't belong on Earth but is only there to quickly find what she's looking for to save her planet especially since her planet still exists, not like Superman's planet that got destroyed. When Superman's planet got destroyed, Superman as Clark Kent knew he had to stay on Earth forever knowing he could get attached to Lois Lane and marry her if he wanted which is why he sacrificed his superpowers just for her on "Superman 2."
After recently watching all of the Superman films over a few days I remembered this existed and gave it a shot with extremely low expectations. It turned out to be a lot of fun. Easily better than Superman III, IV and Returns.

I remember the 'Supergirl' 1984 starring Actress: Helen Slater. I thought that the 'Supergirl' (1984) movie was fairly descent. Actress: Helen Slater would not do anything related to Superman until 2007 when she made guest apperances on the TV series, Smallville.(2001-2011)
In some ways, Supergirl was lucky that Selena didn't make the monster bite her and/or swallow her getting rid of her forever especially since Selena was in control of the monster with all those hand gestures Selena was doing.
This film is so cheesy lol. But as a kid I loved this movie.
Edit: Costume is way better then that what that new supergirl(and man) are wearing.

"Supergirl" is supposed to be capitalized.
It may have been a terrible movie, but it still beats the CW's Supergirl in every department. And Helen Slater was a *much* better Supergirl than Melissa Benoist could ever hope to be.

The actor who plays Ethan in Supergirl (1984), is the same guy who played the obnoxious "Ellis" in Die Hard (1988). 😆

I love this film it was1984 at the time x
Whilst the story needed a polish to put right the holes. The visuals especially the flying i think are the best of the Reeves based stuff. They really nailed it by this time round. Score was up there with John Williams stuff. Helen Slater was a great choice. Shame Reeves didnt cameo as intended. Despite the flaws i always enjoy the movie.

I think the issue with the Supergirl movie is by the time of its release ( I think 1984) people still remember Superman 3 which had not done well at the box office so this was not well received. They also cut out of a lot of stuff that would have made the story more understandable, The international edition adds those missing parts and it helps make the story more complete and not having gaps. I still enjoy the movie very much and I even got to meet Helen Slater at a convention and she singed my International edition of the Supergirl movie.

Didn’t know the original jimmy Olsen from Superman was in this movie. It must’ve been many years for me since I’ve seen this classic film.
@Mike Richardson It's a good thing that his leg was better because I remember this "Supergirl" film came after "Superman 3" and on "Superman 3", Jimmy broke his leg.
He was also in Zack Snyder's Justice League and played a cop in Metropolis

@@Hawthorne-Studios Yes, I'm sure his leg just got better which is why he traveled to see his girlfriend which is Lucy Lane. The only other time he was seen on "Superman 3" after he broke his leg was where he was taking a picture of a married couple who won a trip where his boss Perry White said "he came back with a broken leg."
