    I love this film, absolutely and without shame. It's not high art by any means, but it has great visual FX, an amazing score, and in my opinion, the best flying wirework/effects in movies. Helen Slater is as perfect casting for Supergirl as Chris Reeve was for Superman, and the film is entertaining - something many modern superhero films can't do as they are bogged down in gritty bleakness and bloated structures. Supergirl is just a lovely, simple little film, with a great lead and some fun situations, and that's where its charm lies. For all its faults, I rank it better than any of the DCEU films.

    "Magic" is a big part of the DC universe, so having Supergirl face off against demons is a good fit. Surprised no-ones ever tried to do it with Superman in movies since it's one of his actual vulnerabilities.

    • @00TheRealTC
      @00TheRealTC 5 лет назад +1

      GamerWho Agreed. It’s too bad we were left to fill in the blanks, really, with this movie. It employed canon elements of the “Superman/Supergirl” mythology, but totally ignored other crucial canon elements from Kara’s origin story that would have made this a better film.
      Magic was one thing. Kryptonians are vulnerable to it, so Selena actually makes a fairly good nemesis. Average, non-comics-reading movie-goers would have been oblivious to this, though.
      A second point literally no one seems to mention is why Kara has such great difficulty locating the Omegahedron. A throwaway line from Bianca tells us all we need to know: the Coffer of Shadows is made out of lead, which Kara’s X-ray vision would not be able to penetrate.
      Again, viewers not familiar with this would just assume it was poor writing or a plot hole.

      Not only face off demons, but face a witch that could do harm to SG with her magical abilities. I mean a great villain to face and the fight would of been epic.

    This movie is one of my guilty pleasures. They showed it on TV here in Norway back in 1992 and me, being 9 or 10 at the time, was completely sold on it. My parents taped it for me when it was aired on TV here and I watched that video tape so much I wore it out lol! I ordered the international version on DVD online when it became available and later I found an import double DVD here in Norway that included both the international version and the longer editor's cut version. I agree that neither version makes for an Oscar masterpiece but it's camp and fun, gives me nostalgia watching it and as you say "it's so bad it's good". Lackuster script aside, the special effects are quite amazing and the flying scenes are especially my favorite SFX scenes from the whole movie.

    I could've sworn i saw two or 3 scenes from the Director's cut in the International version that played in Europe when the film was out in 1984?
    - Selena extended scene with Nigel
    - Zoltar carrying Supergirl down the stairs in his place within the Phantom Zone (6:14)
    - Everything towards the end of the film which is missing from the US version and slightly longer shots from the International cut!
    I swear, thats how i always saw it. Later VHS versions of course were like the US version though.

    • @DavidAllgaier_
      @DavidAllgaier_ 5 лет назад

      HindsightPOV I read one of the early drafts of the script online. It was dated back to January or February of 1983. There’s a part in it that describes a shot of a handbag she carries into the bubble that transports her to earth. And there’s a shot of the supergirl costume with the S logo on it.

    • @DavidAllgaier_
      @DavidAllgaier_ 5 лет назад

      I was trying to find a version of the script that had Superman in it, but the version I read unfortunately didn’t have him. Like the movie it explains that he’s away doing work in some other galaxy.

    • @00TheRealTC
      @00TheRealTC 5 лет назад +1

      HindsightPOV it was mentioned in the commentary on the Anchor Bay release that Kara wearing the costume upon arriving on Earth was meant to “symbolize” her transformation. Thank God they didn’t go with with even stupider things that were discussed at the time like Argo existing within a dew-drop on a leaf.

      Yeah I'm like, where did Kara get her SG uniform when in the capsule she was wearing her white dress robes. Maybe after seeing the picture of Superman and trying to find the Argo City device, she could of made the SG outfit.

    Placing Superman in this film could have taken the "spot light" from Supergirl. And, Christopher Reeves, who by this time an established actor, may have overshadowed the 19-yr-old Helen Slater. I saw this in theaters and found it quite good. But, it was not played as "epic" as the Superman films. But, more of a small town local problem than country/world-wide threat or situation. Perhaps the "epic' film would have been its sequel which never happened. Great video, and thanks on the info of the Bluray!

    I freakin' LOVE this silly film.
    The score, especially...but the FX and Slater's amazing 'Reeve like' performance are top notch, and it IS campy ass fun.
    I recall dragging my friends to see this in high school, under the pretense that it was admittedly cheesy and 'bad', and they all thanked me for it afterwards, saying that not only was it great fun and a hoot to watch, but that Ms Slater was GORGEOUS eye candy to boot...;)
    It should be noted that the inclusion of magic and monsters was common fare in the Supergirl comics, so it was actually well played and a proper homage that this film included such a plotline...
    GREAT review as always, keep 'em coming...

      Supergirl was a very special film at the time of its release but was not regarded as such because it was not promoted in the way it should have been promoted.
      The flying techniques in this film are some of the best flying techniques EVER committed to film, including the Superman Films with Christopher Reeve. With Supergirl, the special effects team had really perfected the art of flying on the screen and more importantly: the special effects teams had perfected the flying techniques to come from a wholely female perspective. As a female and someone who was younger than Christopher Reeve, it was important that Helen Slater character moved a lot differently in flying in the air from her male counterpart.
      Some of the flying scenes with Helen Slater flying in the air are just some of the most mesmerizing images that I have EVER seen in the history of visual Cinema Film.
      I think Jerry Goldsmith score to 'Supergirl' is just as 'Magnificent' as John Williams 'Superman The Movie' film score.

    Mr Harper? Doesn't Supergirl have a deleted scene which was cut and have never been scene by anybody, but was shown in the comic book adaptation? Of Selena killing one of the protesters by turning her into an ice statue! When after she banished Supergirl. Was later driving herself and Bianca in her Rolls Royce down the driveway with her black suited guards as escort from her Castle fortress!
    The trading cards apparently had a shot where the scene was suppose to be you might say? According to rumor and speculations. The film itself has a strange puddle (where there wasn't one beforehand?) as Selena's car drives off after she has Jimmy Olsen and Lucy Lane are arrested. Hmm, food for thought perhaps!

    • @marklola12
      @marklola12 6 лет назад +3

      MGSBigBoss77 yeh its actually well known this scene was filmed and fully shot and decided not to used it as it was not wanted to show someone being killed in the movie as it made the tone too dark, that is why when the female protestor runs in front of the car and is showing waving her board it skips to Lucy shouting at selina and we don't see that female protestor again, selina says take them away and the people run and the guards take Lucy and a few others into the a truck, then from inside the truck we see Selina's car outside and that female protestors board on the floor in a big puddle of water in front of the car where she had turned to ice and had been shattered, they had used real ice for the scene where she shattered into pieces. in the part where the camera goes to Lucy shouting at selina there's a guy behind her and he is kinda looking at front of slinas car and in the downward direction which I presume was at the ice/shattered protestor which was shot before.
      also the heat vision hair cut scene was left out not sure why maybe it look bad. but in the movie the scene after was left in though where kara enters the dorm and shows off her new hair to Lucy and asks how it looks and Lucy is not impressed and says it kinda looks the same lol
      also there was a TV cut of the movie shown in america on ABC that had tons of footage never seen in any other cut of the movie

Ya never know as in the Superman II trading cards it showed the powerless Clark Kent int fortress communicating with his father scene. which we all know didn't make Lester's cut of the film for decades!

      MGSBigBoss77 yeh she is in the movie still, not sure if you know, can not tell as it sounds like you not sure if she's cut out fully?
      she still runs in front of the car with that sign there and shouts selina must go but then the camera is back on Lucy and we don't see her again because the scene with her being frozen is cut. well I've seen the full set of cards for sale before on eBay all complete each picture laid out and there was not one in the set so not sure it was ever there :/

      Its like the Superman IV scene of the first Nuclear Man's death. i swear the Starlog magazine back in the day, had an alternate shot of Superman and Nuclear-Man facing off from a much lower worms eye view? The film's poster magazine and other specials at the time had a close up shot of Nuclear-Man 1's death a facial shot of him screaming i do recall. Joking i wondered if i got it confused with a picture from Police Academy 4 though (lol) but i swear it had Clive Mantel's face however.

      I forgot I actually have on my pc the complete topps supergirl cards someone had send me them that they had scanned for me, they had the complete full set of them just rechecked and knew there was never the ice scene in them. I have the Supergirl movie comic they brought out too and it was not in that either. I wish I could be let loose in the vaults where it all is supposed to be, I know they would have been looking for it, though I know they have hardly any budget for these releases so im unsure to if they actually did some proper looking as this movie and its contest has been passed from pillar to post over the years

    For this particular dvd/blu-ray release, color timing has very little, if anything, to do with visible wires in given sequences. For the international cut (possibly directors cut also) certain flying scenes simply had their wires removed optically, old school style (using an animation stand/garbage matting). 1978 Superman, also sparingly used this very expensive technique. I noticed this back in the original 2000 dual DVD release. For some reason, the home release distributors, chose an earlier print (probably negative), as a source for the featured/main digital transfer, that did not include any of those post production touch ups, done back in the day. The wire removal, was for reasons unknown, "treated" separately from the remaining VFX. I believe one reason they might have done this is because the source print, with the scenes involving the wire removal, were of a lower visually degraded quality. Also, old school wire removal was a big pain, that would usually result in additional "loss of generation", drastically increasing the amount of grain and contrast, in an optically manipulated shot. The very first time the wire issue is most noticeable in the 2 versions, is early on when Supergirl shoots out of the lake. On the main disk, the cable is impossible to miss, where as the international cut has it painted out. This is not a factor of color timing/image transfer. Please forgive me Oliver, I love your work - I could not help but point out the small discrepancy.

      Emmett All movies were cropped when put in widescreen. They were all shot open matte which was 4:3 then formatted in widescreen. If you'll notice in on the set footage the director was watching a 4:3 monitor with a rectangle box in the middle, they positioned the camera so it would capture the image in that box, then later crop whatever went outside the box. I hope you're still awake.

    Good review, Oliver. You have a new subscriber. I've been a fan of Supergirl since the early '80s. Having been disabled my whole life, I think it's on some level a boyhood fantasy of having a super-powerful and beautiful woman to defend me if I got into danger. ;-) The 1984 movie is still my favorite "bad" movie, to this day. I picked up the Blu-ray myself, and it looks great on my 49" Samsung 4K TV.

    I'm glad that, despite this movie not being that great, Helen Slater still got to guest star on series like Supergirl and Smallville where she showed that her acting abilities are not the cause of the movie's bad reception. I particulary love her on Supergirl, because she once said in an interview that she wish the story of a teenage girl with superpowers dealing with teenage life could've been done better and that is exactly what the TV show is doing.

    • @rogerhoward7498
      @rogerhoward7498 5 лет назад

      I believe this film gets a raw treatment from the critics, which I believe is not purely justified.
      Yes the script is very muddled and the acting weak, but the acting ties in with 1980's sentiment in film and particularly with the type of acting that you naturally expect from the DC Comics franchise.
      The actors try to do the best with a weak script.
      Actors like Faye Dunnaway and Mia Farrow are the type of actors of legend and actors of the class like Peter O Toole and Simon Ward are two of the finest British Actors of stage and screen, that the United Kingdom has EVER produced.
      It's good that Supergirl tried to get the best actors they could, like they did with Superman the Movie.
      Even though the film has its flaws, at least the story is consistent, and from one scene to the next, you can find it's natural rhythm and continuation of storyplot.

    Great review. I was a kid when this came out too and I remember watching it on cable a few hundred times during the summer of '85. Do you think the tv version of Superman II or the director's cut of Superman IV will ever be released? Superman IV needs a better version just for legacy sake. I think it made less sense than Supergirl. The international cut really improved that film, in my opinion.

    • @darthkurland
      @darthkurland 5 лет назад

      Warren Miller I believe that the TV Cut of “Superman II” might not be far away. I believe that they located a picture master of that cut during the search for the footage for the Donner Cut. In the deleted scenes section, I could tell that the audio for five of those scenes was definitely from the TV Cut.
