I play Mizuno Hot Metal Pro irons. They’re close enough to a blade look for me. I’m convinced that one of the problems with traditional blades in the past was the lack of choice in shafts. You’d always have Dynamic Gold R300, S300 and nothing else. Twenty years ago they were way too heavy for me. Now with all the emphasis on fitting it’s a different story. If I was knee deep in money I’d get a set of the current Mizuno blades with a Nippon Zelos 7 shaft, a shaft you might see on the ladies tour being used by a 140 lb girl. Being 70 they suit me perfectly...light like graphite but with loads of feel.
Rick, you are one of those guy who could break 75 using hockey sticks. Thanks for a fun video with good group of guys pitching in.

I love the small head but I play Mizuno forged cavity backs. Nothing gives me more confidence behind the ball than blades but the tiny added forgiveness in a CB helps. Gives me the small head design that I can work but just a little extra help. Blades are definitely not dead. Not even close.

This was a great segment, well done! I started playing golf in 1964 when I took my first lessons at the age of 6 and played throughout my life, although I took a 20 year hiatus and am just getting back into the game since taking retirement.
I have seen all types of irons come and go in that span of time. Blades, Low Profile (Browning 440's), Ping Eye's, Cavity Backs, Perimeter Weighted, Hybrids, so on and so on. In the end blade irons are a thing of beauty, no matter the manufacturer they all had this sense of style and elegance. With today's clubs most of them are quite ugly and they do tend to be inconsistent in their play. I'm hitting Taylor Made irons today (SIM 2 max). I like them a lot but I wish I could still use my old Titleist 821 Tour Model irons but at 64 that isn't going to happen since they have extra stiff shafts and built up grips. I could have them re-shafted and gripped, but I kind of want to leave them in their glorious original state. You want to see something really scary? Pick up the 1 - iron from this set and and address the ball, lol!

I don’t game their clubs, but my go to ball is the Wilson Duo. It feels like butter off the club face, flies a mile, and allows for plenty of control around the greens. I am honestly surprised I don’t find more of them around the course...but then again, they fly so straight, you just don’t lose them :-)

I know this video is over a year old but I just wanted to weigh in. I had a set of blades years back and loved them. I switched to the RocketBladeZ Tour irons for a while and although I hit them well and far, I never liked the feel as much. This season, I have picked up a set of Taylormade MB Tour Preferred irons (2011-12) model and I am very excited to see what I can do with them. For me, I love the look when I set up to a blade. I feel like I am the opposite from most who would see the smaller head and thin profile and not like it. I actually prefer that look and it makes me feel like I will strike it better.
Cheers to everyone and a great season!

Playing with blades really lets you know if you are doing it right. If you just want to pickup and go on the weekends a play a round cavities are generally the way to go. If you want to work on your game and really get a feel for subtlety and finesse its blades all the way. I play with both, if I feel I am off for some reason the hollow backs come out, use the blades to work my way back and continue with them.
Either way, golf is wonderful and being able to discuss this is all part of the game..... :)

I am still playing my Wilson Staff Tour Blades 1978, reshafted and regripped. I am 56, when I started playing, all clubs were blades. They were just called golf clubs. Calling them blades is nonsense. You didn't have a choice what to use. Beginners would do well to use these and get a true feel for how they are hitting the ball. The "secret" is that you get a good response and you can understand where you are going wrong. With forgiving irons, you can't tell so much how you are hitting and therefore cannot correct your mistakes and therefore continue with where you are. I am no longer a low to middle handicapper now , because I don't play so much. When I do hit it in the middle, you don't feel it, it is like a warm knife going through butter.

I have a set of Power Bilt Citation blades bought in 1985 when I was in high school. The club pro was pushing me to get the Scotch Blades back then but I preferred the feel of the Citation. They served me well until I didn't have time to play often enough to keep a nice solid strike so I went to a cavity back and found those more forgiving but still to this day I have a difficult time using them around the greens. I still use my ancient persimmon 3 and 5 woods only because I don't play enough to justify investing into something more modern. I do agree I got more height out of my blades and could stop them quicker but a missed strike on the blades, which happens often becuase of my infrequent play, is far worse for me so I'll keep with my cavity backs. Oh, and a side note, playing a match in high school, I shanked my 2 iron so badly I got pissed off and broke the shaft of that club over my knee.

I played blades from when I was 10-37 years old.
The lofts Rick has are almost one full club stronger than what I played.
His 5 iron loft will start to get some mis hits for an average skilled golfer.
Some hosel offset helps square the club face. Substituting hybrids for Rick's 3-5 iron would help. Ricks 6-PW blades should play okay for an average golfer.
A thin top line, once you get used to looking at it, might help you play better.

(Donald, not Donna.) For going on 50 years, I played blades. In the 60s and 70s, there were no cavity back irons. In the 80s and 90s they appeared. I especially remember trying a Ping cavity back. I hated it. Too much offset and ugly to boot. I played with a set of Wilson Staff blades until 2005. As I aged, my distance started to go down. My blades were worn out. thereafter, I didn't play golf for a period of 15 years. Which brings me to 2020. I picked up the game again and bought a set of Cobra Speedzone irons. I didn't particularly like the way they looked. But they were very forgiving, and my distance increased tremendously. I decided to use blades for my short irons. It has worked out well. The company from whom I purchased the blades is called Gigagolf. They are now making a forged cavity-back iron. I'm very interested in a cavity back that feels like a regular blade. .

I've been playing for 20 years. The very first set of clubs I got wear a set of Wilson Staff Red Dot from 1972 they're the only set of clubs I have played with consistently with. I play two a 3 handicap. But when I initially got the blades I was a 22 handicap. Everybody tried to talk me out of them. But I stayed the course cuz I knew that no other club would give me the workability at these clubs did. In my bag I have a 2-iron to a sand wedge. I use them all. I love my clubs and wouldn't hit anything else. One cool thing though everybody always looks at your bag and when they see blades immediately they have an aww factor to them.

    2012 Cleveland 588 MB Blades. 3-62*
Love them. Only down side if you’d consider it. My PW is 37* vs traditional PW now a days being 34-35*. They feel great. Look great. I don’t enjoy looking at a thick beefy iron head. And btw. 3 iron (21*) of the deck is always my safe shot out the tee box.

I grew up hitting blades lol. Johnny Miller something or another I got as a hand me down set from my uncle. This was in the mid 1980's. What I played HS golf with and wooden woods lol. 38 years ago and I am grabbing some srixon z forged today. Played everything from super game improvement clubs down to those Johnny Miller irons and all I can say is practice small play small! Let's face it. 99.9% of golfers play for the fun of it. Sure, we all want to shoot par or better but that's usually not the case. I prefer hitting the blades just because it forces you not to get lazy with your strikes. You're really playing yourself on a course so challenge yourself to be better. Have fun and enjoy the outdoors!

I m a beginner just started playing golf a month ago , i tried game improvement irons , cavity backs those never really worked , but when i got my hands on titliest blades those are old i think alteast 7 years old but the first swing i took with 5 iron it was day and night difference, normally i hit 140 to 165 yards with game improvement irons but with blades it was consistently between 170 to 180 i usually hit straight square to a little closed head i was really surprised, because consistency was throughout i played about 35 shots with blades and 35 with game improvement irons i played extremely good with blades my coach was really surprised too because it was his first time seeing someone total novoice that good with blades he just told me never ever buy a package set of golf save money have a good wilson blades those are in budget and quality also extremely good . Distance i mentioned was what i got from simulator and in field test too i don't really know if that distance is good or bad

I think one point of clarity is needed, which you hinted at initially, but could have been more forcefully put throughout the video. At certain points, you suggest that the only "downside" of the blades is that they come up "shorter" than your other irons. Additionally, toward the end, you suggested that one benefit of the clubs is that they flew higher. But at the beginning, you mention that they are more "weakly lofted" than most modern sets. Which leads to an important point - and in my opinion - a sneaky marketing ploy on the part of modern equipment manufacturers, and that is: over the past several decades, the lofts of clubs have gradually become stronger. Today's 4-iron is essentially yesterday's 2-iron in terms of loft. Both are frequently in the range of 20 degrees. This has allowed manufacturers to claim that you're getting "more distance" from a set of irons vis-a-vis older clubs, but the reality is, they've simply de-lofted the club gradually. This is also why, with modern sets, you never see anything lower than a 4-iron. I had pondered this for awhile ("why are they no longer selling 3-irons?") before seeing the "loft lineup" of a set of modern irons.
So the better question to ask is: How far, and how high, is your 20 or 24 or 28 or 32 degree "modern" iron going? And how far and high is the corresponding 20, 24, 28, and 32 degree blade irons going? My guess is that they're going the same distance, and flying the same height, if you're hitting anywhere near the sweet spot. It does no good to compare a "4-iron" against a "4-iron" if they have differing lofts... and how far I hit a 4-iron today compared to how far I hit a 4-iron 20 years ago really needs to take into account the fact that my 4-iron is really now a 2-iron

I am going to get new clubs next year and will take a hard look at blades. I have the thick soles on game improvement clubs and want something thinner. I may need to look at setting the lofts a bit stronger as I already hit the ball pretty high and really don't want something that goes even higher.

It’s really fun to see people’s feeling around the blades. For me i feel so much more confortable with a blade, it ensures me i will get a good contact if i aim at the ball, the turf won’t interact much even if my swing isn’t perfect.
And when i played more forgiving irons (titleist ap 2), i could see the upside of a ball never moving from the line you aimed at (security), but i disliked the lack of manoeuvrability.
Oh, about misshits, may it be a « forgiving » iron or a blade, it will still be a misshit. Can’t say i saw any difference between my ap2 and mizunos.
Give it a try, you may like it, or won’t, but you’ll know :)

  • @zooker7507

what people should consider when they are told they can't play blades is the benefit of the feedback from a pure hit that only blades can give you. That feeling is what helps you develop the purest swing, because of the penalty for a miss hit is a really bad feeling. If your clubs are so forgiving then you will never have the feedback to help your mind zero in on a flush hit. You will just develop a swing that only feels contact and never feels the sweet spot. Once you body/mind feels the sweet spot it, with enough practice, it will naturally force you to deliver the club face's sweet spot to the ball. Simple as that. If you live by fear then you reap what you sow. If you are afraid of learning then you will never grow. Don't be afraid get a set of blades and be determined to let the clubs teach you something. Oh, and learn to love to walk when you play. Don't rob yourself of the essence of this beautiful game!

Blades are definitely not dead. I grew up playing a set and have always come back to them. I currently play a set of forged blades from KZG. They are made from super soft carbon steel and feel like butter when struck well. Not the most forgiving, but the playability of blades is very hard to match with a cavity back. Blades rule!!!

I've played blades for ten years. I now play off scratch but I was better 3-10 years ago. I like the look yes, but I find my distance control is better with a blade than even a smaller CB. I love having so much range in my irons. I can comfortably hit a 140-170 yard 7 iron for example. That's what draws me in.

I learned to play on old 1970s blades. Now I have a set of Hogan BH-5 cavity backs mostly because I could not afford new blades. Never understood the obsession with how far you hit an iron. They are gapped for a reason. Only club that longer distance should matter is with the driver. Learn to hit it constantly and take the proper club for the distance.

The secret to playing blades is to NOT overswing! You still need a lot of practice, but they are more accurate when flushed and feels so guud! Also, you need to be long with your drivers/3w so approach shots are less than 170yds...

Great video Rick. I think the problem is, that golfers believes that cavity back or game improvement clubs can cure miss hits... but they cant... the only thing that can cure miss hits is regular training... and when you get to certain level you just want consistency... so blades will never be out of date... in my opinion.
