Same. Then she leaned into the crowd to scream the song's climax right where I was standing 2nd row. I could hear her almost as well as I could the amplified version of herself. The moment absolutely froze me and now that part never fails to make my hair stand on end. I love the power of great music.
I know Sharon Van Etten is not trying to forge a career by making 51-year-old fathers of three adult children cry at their computer, and I'm not saying I'm that guy...ok, I am. I am that guy. Beethoven once said, "To play a wrong note is insignificant; to play without passion is inexcusable." As a kid, I admired technical proficiency, and that's important. But that ain't what music is about. Her passion...that came from her soul...that moved me. She moves me. The world needs more of this.
@@TheCrazyyashley yes i agree the raw passion of the release of emotion that engulf me. It was honest emotions that came out. So rare in artist nowadays. Legend 🌟🙏
Coming back to this over a year later and it's still one of the most incredible sets I've seen on a show chock full of them. If this had happened on network tv back in the 90-early 00's- like MTV Unplugged- it would be a moment EVERYONE still talks about. It's that good. And I'm a lifetime cynic.
I still come back to this most days, i was seventeen when this came out and felt it in my bones - im now almost 23, such an incredible piece of music 🤍
It's primal and very stirring. I'm afraid she's shredding her vocal chords with that technique though. I hope she doesn't sing that way very often or that she gets a coach to help her not hurt herself to sound a certain way. She's super talented and I'm interested to see what she does in the future!
I love her. She could've easily gone with an acoustic song or songs, but these toned down versions of usually bombastic songs are so so lovely and moving.
this video came out when i was seventeen at a very surreal and scary time in my life, and now as a 19 year old in 2021 it still makes me cry and takes me back to that time, and 'seventeen' will never not make my heart feel the way it does now whenever i hear it. so much love to sharon and her music xx
I've seen a number of live versions of Seventeen and I've yet to see her even slightly phone it in on the last chorus. Her commitment after being a touring musician for so long is amazing to see.
I’m here because of the movie that the title I can’t remember but I remembered the words of this beautiful therapeutic song that was played in the background of that movie.. seventeen..hauntingly beautiful! ‘I used to be free I used to be seventeen..’ I’m double that age now but still feeling seventeen..
Yo im like a year late with this, but if you liked bon iver’s heavenly father you may also be excited to hear (if you dont already know) that bon iver and sharron van etten together played a rendition of her song love more which is unimaginably good
I can’t stop listening to this performance - I really love how SVE really leans into the strength and power behind her voice here, a bit deeper, grittier and louder than other live sets I’ve seen. Not afraid to let’er rip, so to speak - especially on Seventeen, of course. Love her always!
Damn Sharon really gettin into 17, almost made me fuckin cry. Don't think I have seen her so into singing that song before. Love her to bit tho. She is the best.
this might be my favorite tiny desk concert, its an artists i didnt know of until this and i loved EVERY song in the set and seventeen has become a fvorite of mine, but i love her live performances far more than the album version. this so awesome.
Seventeen was released when I was 16, I discovered it when I was 17 that day I cry, today I'm turning 20 years old, it still feels like the first time listening to Sharon sing this
I was a very early fan of SVE and recalling how blown away I was by her voice back then, it is amazing that her voice had so much growing yet to do. She never ceases to amaze me.
Me too. I remember being so excited for her second record to come out. I played the first one for all my friends (and I also randomly played it for Evan Dando from The Lemonheads--long story). "Have You Seen" from her first album was my jam. I discovered her when she played on the side stage on Sunday morning at the Philadelphia Folk Festival. At the time, we both had short black hair and bangs and people kept mistaking me for her.
I remember the first time she was on tiny desk accompanied by another singer, Sharon was playing an acoustic guitar. She still brings a good performance as well as the band with all those synths and effects, I love it. That Jupiter4 song is eerie.
Sharon is one of the best things that happend to me this year. Thank you so much npr! This Tiny Desk is everything i could ever imagine (although i wish she had sung malibu, jupiter 4 or no one's easy to love instead of you shadow haha BUT IT WAS AMAZING ANYWAYS) Now, we need to see some music from Angel Olsen, Ex:Re, Lucy Dacus & Weyes Blood
My introduction to Sharon Van Etten was listening to an All Songs Considered Late Night Dispatches From SXSW in 2010 and hearing Robin get so emotional watching her perform in a church. I found her music and was hooked from that day. She just keeps getting better and better. This has to be on a short list of best Tiny Desk Concerts ever.
Her last February was my 2nd concert ever after Keane in 2011. Discovered her the summer before. Relate to her words at this point in my life so much. She inspires me as a songwriter ❤
Seventeen means so much to me. After making music for a long time, being burnt here and there, through this song I find the strength to reinvent myself in music. Not to be liked by others, not to feel the pressure to perform a certain way. But to feel the reason for doing all this, to feel and be felt. No charade. No mask. No acting. Just pure feeling and emotions. With grace and self confidence. And joy. And also understanding that in order to be felt as a musician, you gotta give your soul. Otherwise there is no point. But oh how hard this can be. It hurts to put out your soul in a song. To show yourself fragile. To turn the invisible to the outside. But this is the only way. Thank you Sharon for doing exactly this 💙
I always love seeing Sharon and Heather performing together, it always seems so grounded. 💛 Side note: "Like herding cats"... My vocabulary has expanded.
A brilliant modern artist .Pity she did not play my favourite "Jupiter 4" But her passion on "Just Seventeen " was worth the admission money alone . I gave her a standing ovation !
i unclicked the like button, just so i could hit it again. I've been listening and dancing to so many versions of Seventeen in the past 2 hours and can't get overfed with it. Every version is perfect in its own way, and she brings me to tears every time. Thank you, SvE, for inspiration and infectious passion. This is overwhelming.
Sharon is stunning ( without trying to be stunning ) Saw her & her band many years ago, great show & sound. I recommend to everyone out there, if you get a chance to see her live, please do so, artist like her are few & far between.
Patti Smith is one of my heroes, but I have to say SVE’s pipes are a lot stronger than Patti’s. I think the biggest commonality between the two of them, besides the passion, is the Jersey accent apparent in their vocals.
Saw them live in Norwich, England , earlier this year. Great gig, and would travel a fair way to see them again. Great backing, particularly Heather’s backing vocals, understated but added subtle depth.
I've always found Seventeen a highly emotional experience......and I'm guessing that any parent could relate to the lyrics. This version just brought me to tears.......easily, and as a 55 year old father of a 22 and 26 year old, I have no trouble admitting that.
honestly even as a 27 year old who already looks back on his 17 year old self and all their arrogant, precious idealism with some longing and regret it's already a giant headfuck. i can barely imagine what it must be like as a parent.

Man "Seventeen" always gets me . One of the best songs I've heard in recent years
...every single time, in every single version

Still the best song of 2019 in my opinion
I agree, that was frickin awesome!!!

Beethoven's words are why punk bands are more relevant than ever. They play all the wrong notes, but boy is there some passion in it.
Jason M, what a reply 🙌🏼

'But that ain't what music is about.'....100%. People who dont get this just don't get it.
cosign that. reading her wiki during seventeen is a real emotional roller coaster.
As a 23 year old woman on her period listening to this rendition of Seventeen has been a WHIRLWIND
So painfully accurate 😅
Looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool
I'm exactly 23, on my period and crying here 😂😂❤️ I feel you girl
I’m a 17 year old male (not on his period) and it’s still a whirlwind
Hollie, you don't need to "overshare" on RUclips.... :-)
The yelling on seventeen gives me tears and goosebumps every time I watch this.
she cried too

Her first tiny desk was so fantastic. This one is good as well.
Funny....I wish it was 7 all night...

The way she thanked her band with true gratitude and appreciation.

It's primal and very stirring. I'm afraid she's shredding her vocal chords with that technique though. I hope she doesn't sing that way very often or that she gets a coach to help her not hurt herself to sound a certain way.
She's super talented and I'm interested to see what she does in the future!

All these songs are still the most honest performances I’ve seen on tiny desk. Gives me chills (In a good way) to watch.
I come back here every year and still got goosebumps. Sharon is pure emotion.
She gets more beautiful with every birthday. It's hard to stop watching her.
I love her. She could've easily gone with an acoustic song or songs, but these toned down versions of usually bombastic songs are so so lovely and moving.

Her scream in seventeen has the same energy as bon iver in Heavenly Father
Justin's Wooh! is the only true religion
Yay I'm excited to go check that out now if that's true, cuz that energy is everything.
