I know Sharon Van Etten is not trying to forge a career by making 51-year-old fathers of three adult children cry at their computer, and I'm not saying I'm that guy...ok, I am. I am that guy. Beethoven once said, "To play a wrong note is insignificant; to play without passion is inexcusable." As a kid, I admired technical proficiency, and that's important. But that ain't what music is about. Her passion...that came from her soul...that moved me. She moves me. The world needs more of this.
Same. Then she leaned into the crowd to scream the song's climax right where I was standing 2nd row. I could hear her almost as well as I could the amplified version of herself. The moment absolutely froze me and now that part never fails to make my hair stand on end. I love the power of great music.
It's primal and very stirring. I'm afraid she's shredding her vocal chords with that technique though. I hope she doesn't sing that way very often or that she gets a coach to help her not hurt herself to sound a certain way. She's super talented and I'm interested to see what she does in the future!
Coming back to this over a year later and it's still one of the most incredible sets I've seen on a show chock full of them. If this had happened on network tv back in the 90-early 00's- like MTV Unplugged- it would be a moment EVERYONE still talks about. It's that good. And I'm a lifetime cynic.
Yo im like a year late with this, but if you liked bon iver’s heavenly father you may also be excited to hear (if you dont already know) that bon iver and sharron van etten together played a rendition of her song love more which is unimaginably good
I love her. She could've easily gone with an acoustic song or songs, but these toned down versions of usually bombastic songs are so so lovely and moving.
this video came out when i was seventeen at a very surreal and scary time in my life, and now as a 19 year old in 2021 it still makes me cry and takes me back to that time, and 'seventeen' will never not make my heart feel the way it does now whenever i hear it. so much love to sharon and her music xx
Damn Sharon really gettin into 17, almost made me fuckin cry. Don't think I have seen her so into singing that song before. Love her to bit tho. She is the best.
I've seen a number of live versions of Seventeen and I've yet to see her even slightly phone it in on the last chorus. Her commitment after being a touring musician for so long is amazing to see.
I can’t stop listening to this performance - I really love how SVE really leans into the strength and power behind her voice here, a bit deeper, grittier and louder than other live sets I’ve seen. Not afraid to let’er rip, so to speak - especially on Seventeen, of course. Love her always!
I’m here because of the movie that the title I can’t remember but I remembered the words of this beautiful therapeutic song that was played in the background of that movie.. seventeen..hauntingly beautiful! ‘I used to be free I used to be seventeen..’ I’m double that age now but still feeling seventeen..
Patti Smith is one of my heroes, but I have to say SVE’s pipes are a lot stronger than Patti’s. I think the biggest commonality between the two of them, besides the passion, is the Jersey accent apparent in their vocals.
this might be my favorite tiny desk concert, its an artists i didnt know of until this and i loved EVERY song in the set and seventeen has become a fvorite of mine, but i love her live performances far more than the album version. this so awesome.
Seventeen was released when I was 16, I discovered it when I was 17 that day I cry, today I'm turning 20 years old, it still feels like the first time listening to Sharon sing this
I was a very early fan of SVE and recalling how blown away I was by her voice back then, it is amazing that her voice had so much growing yet to do. She never ceases to amaze me.
Me too. I remember being so excited for her second record to come out. I played the first one for all my friends (and I also randomly played it for Evan Dando from The Lemonheads--long story). "Have You Seen" from her first album was my jam. I discovered her when she played on the side stage on Sunday morning at the Philadelphia Folk Festival. At the time, we both had short black hair and bangs and people kept mistaking me for her.
I remember the first time she was on tiny desk accompanied by another singer, Sharon was playing an acoustic guitar. She still brings a good performance as well as the band with all those synths and effects, I love it. That Jupiter4 song is eerie.
A brilliant modern artist .Pity she did not play my favourite "Jupiter 4" But her passion on "Just Seventeen " was worth the admission money alone . I gave her a standing ovation !
Her last February was my 2nd concert ever after Keane in 2011. Discovered her the summer before. Relate to her words at this point in my life so much. She inspires me as a songwriter ❤
I've always found Seventeen a highly emotional experience......and I'm guessing that any parent could relate to the lyrics. This version just brought me to tears.......easily, and as a 55 year old father of a 22 and 26 year old, I have no trouble admitting that.
honestly even as a 27 year old who already looks back on his 17 year old self and all their arrogant, precious idealism with some longing and regret it's already a giant headfuck. i can barely imagine what it must be like as a parent.
Sharon is stunning ( without trying to be stunning ) Saw her & her band many years ago, great show & sound. I recommend to everyone out there, if you get a chance to see her live, please do so, artist like her are few & far between.
My introduction to Sharon Van Etten was listening to an All Songs Considered Late Night Dispatches From SXSW in 2010 and hearing Robin get so emotional watching her perform in a church. I found her music and was hooked from that day. She just keeps getting better and better. This has to be on a short list of best Tiny Desk Concerts ever.
Seventeen means so much to me. After making music for a long time, being burnt here and there, through this song I find the strength to reinvent myself in music. Not to be liked by others, not to feel the pressure to perform a certain way. But to feel the reason for doing all this, to feel and be felt. No charade. No mask. No acting. Just pure feeling and emotions. With grace and self confidence. And joy. And also understanding that in order to be felt as a musician, you gotta give your soul. Otherwise there is no point. But oh how hard this can be. It hurts to put out your soul in a song. To show yourself fragile. To turn the invisible to the outside. But this is the only way. Thank you Sharon for doing exactly this 💙
Sharon is one of the best things that happend to me this year. Thank you so much npr! This Tiny Desk is everything i could ever imagine (although i wish she had sung malibu, jupiter 4 or no one's easy to love instead of you shadow haha BUT IT WAS AMAZING ANYWAYS) Now, we need to see some music from Angel Olsen, Ex:Re, Lucy Dacus & Weyes Blood
I always love seeing Sharon and Heather performing together, it always seems so grounded. 💛 Side note: "Like herding cats"... My vocabulary has expanded.
i unclicked the like button, just so i could hit it again. I've been listening and dancing to so many versions of Seventeen in the past 2 hours and can't get overfed with it. Every version is perfect in its own way, and she brings me to tears every time. Thank you, SvE, for inspiration and infectious passion. This is overwhelming.

Beethoven's words are why punk bands are more relevant than ever. They play all the wrong notes, but boy is there some passion in it.
Jason M, what a reply 🙌🏼
You look younger man yisus
'But that ain't what music is about.'....100%. People who dont get this just don't get it.
cosign that. reading her wiki during seventeen is a real emotional roller coaster.
Man "Seventeen" always gets me . One of the best songs I've heard in recent years
...every single time, in every single version
Same. Then she leaned into the crowd to scream the song's climax right where I was standing 2nd row. I could hear her almost as well as I could the amplified version of herself. The moment absolutely froze me and now that part never fails to make my hair stand on end. I love the power of great music.
Same. Incredible, incredible.
Still the best song of 2019 in my opinion
I agree, that was frickin awesome!!!
As a 23 year old woman on her period listening to this rendition of Seventeen has been a WHIRLWIND
So painfully accurate 😅
I'm exactly 23, on my period and crying here 😂😂❤️ I feel you girl
I’m a 17 year old male (not on his period) and it’s still a whirlwind
Hollie, you don't need to "overshare" on RUclips.... :-)
yeah the merciless cycle of my reproductive organs that literally cradle the growth of human life should prob be more discrete
Every time the sun comes up I want to listen Sharon Van Etten.
But I shit in your bathroom? wait...
Her first tiny desk was so fantastic. This one is good as well.
Funny....I wish it was 7 all night...
DoctorWaffles PHD you know it probably all balances out in the end ?
Same. Have had her on repeat for months.

Good god, her screaming on seventeen made me feel some type of way

Seriously. I’ve been watching it over and over.
"made me fell some type of way" have you been watching UpNext?
It's primal and very stirring. I'm afraid she's shredding her vocal chords with that technique though. I hope she doesn't sing that way very often or that she gets a coach to help her not hurt herself to sound a certain way.
She's super talented and I'm interested to see what she does in the future!
Same!
The yelling on seventeen gives me tears and goosebumps every time I watch this.
she cried too
The way she thanked her band with true gratitude and appreciation.
Seventeen makes me emotional every time I hear it. Such a powerful song and the way she delivers it is so heartwrenching.
Totally agree
Her scream in seventeen has the same energy as bon iver in Heavenly Father
Justin's Wooh! is the only true religion
Yay I'm excited to go check that out now if that's true, cuz that energy is everything.
Yo im like a year late with this, but if you liked bon iver’s heavenly father you may also be excited to hear (if you dont already know) that bon iver and sharron van etten together played a rendition of her song love more which is unimaginably good
This is on repeat lately -- so good.
Radio stations will be playing Seventeen 100 years from now and it will still be completely destroying people
first time listenning. i was not prepared for what happens in "seventeen". i think i need help now, oh god...
Agreed w the third song. Top shelf.
Yep she really freaked her band out at the end there. Cool.
+
I come back here every year and still got goosebumps. Sharon is pure emotion.
11:40 MADE ME FEEL LIKE CRYING HERE. WINTER IS COMING HERE
Me pasó lo mismo
I came here to write this. I don't have kids but that hit a primal cord.
All these songs are still the most honest performances I’ve seen on tiny desk. Gives me chills (In a good way) to watch.
She gets more beautiful with every birthday. It's hard to stop watching her.

Beeba Ritter haha welcome!
I love her. She could've easily gone with an acoustic song or songs, but these toned down versions of usually bombastic songs are so so lovely and moving.

How about now, hm?
Damn Sharon really gettin into 17, almost made me fuckin cry. Don't think I have seen her so into singing that song before. Love her to bit tho. She is the best.
Check out the live version in Glastonbury as well. Really soulful
11:37 RAW emotion...wow!
voice failure
Gets me every time!
One of the best Tiny Desk performances ever.
Interrupting Seventeen with an ad was a cruel thing to do.
brutal

9 years later on NPR and she's still making me 'Love More'
How many hearts did you break without wanting to? How many minds did you open? Dear, Ms. Van Etten!
I can’t stop listening to this performance - I really love how SVE really leans into the strength and power behind her voice here, a bit deeper, grittier and louder than other live sets I’ve seen. Not afraid to let’er rip, so to speak - especially on Seventeen, of course. Love her always!
Never heard of her till I found this performance and it my favourite of them all.
Ok brilliant. But! That hair! The shine! Ugh it’s all perfection ❤️❤️❤️
Had never heard of this woman before. Now I can’t wait to go through her catalog. A RUclips recommendation that wasn’t total crap.
I keep meaning to listen to more of her music. Getting mild patti smith vibes with this..
Little bit Stevie Nicks, little bit Patti Smith. Just a brilliantly talented woman.
She's evocative of several voices, but I always hear Patti Smith shining through.
Patti Smith is one of my heroes, but I have to say SVE’s pipes are a lot stronger than Patti’s. I think the biggest commonality between the two of them, besides the passion, is the Jersey accent apparent in their vocals.
That’s what I’m saying!!!!! I love them both so much
this might be my favorite tiny desk concert, its an artists i didnt know of until this and i loved EVERY song in the set and seventeen has become a fvorite of mine, but i love her live performances far more than the album version. this so awesome.

The Seventeen scream always gives me C H I L L S
One of my favorite Tiny Desk performances and albums.
Seventeen was released when I was 16, I discovered it when I was 17 that day I cry, today I'm turning 20 years old, it still feels like the first time listening to Sharon sing this
I've played this at least 10 times already.
Me too... and then played again starting at 8:23 at least 50 times
I keep trying to turn up the already maxxed volume on my laptop because this sounds SO GOOOD I NEED IT INSIDE ME XD
Seventeen is an absolute masterpiece. Love the way every chorus is a little different.
i don't think i've seen such a beautiful expression of human pain, this girls amazing, it really resonates
Seventeen = Extreme goosebumps
The rawness and vulnerability of her emotions she puts into her music and performances is just what we need
Its been so incredible watching her grow as an artist. THAT. VOICE. So good.
I was a very early fan of SVE and recalling how blown away I was by her voice back then, it is amazing that her voice had so much growing yet to do. She never ceases to amaze me.
It's such a captivating voice.

Probably one of my absolute favorite Tiny Desk Series of all time!
So happy to see Sharon back on Tiny Desk, especially performing Seventeen. One of my favourite songs this year!
Sharon's really hit her stride with this record. Really good stuff. I've become a fan.
Imagine being the coolest human in the world
So it was you
It’s lonely. Quite cool, most of the time. And it gets old faster than a untied bag of fresh Kaiser rolls.
I remember the first time she was on tiny desk accompanied by another singer, Sharon was playing an acoustic guitar. She still brings a good performance as well as the band with all those synths and effects, I love it. That Jupiter4 song is eerie.
Seeing her in concert was one of the highlights of my LIFE!!! And to have her perform this some was EPIC ❤
I've been waiting for a second Sharon Van Etten Tiny Desk for years. This made my morning.
A brilliant modern artist .Pity she did not play my favourite "Jupiter 4"

I saw her in Mexico City way back in 2015 and I've been a huge fan ever since. She'll be at the Corona Capital festival in November. I can't wait!
Gumaro R. Villamil uffffffff 👌
Tiny desk concerts just never disappoint. And Sharon is fantastic!
amazing to watch the NPR from almost ten years ago and see how she grow older and more confident.
I had the pleasure of seeing Sharon and her great band perform in Wales last year. She was obviously enjoying herself enormously. Just great!
I've always found Seventeen a highly emotional experience......and I'm guessing that any parent could relate to the lyrics.
