  • Did you know that a Leopard Catamaran can come with a secret aquatic ecosystem? That you could be unknowingly and secretly smuggling amoebas across borders? Issues in the deck penetrations were found in many places, including around the anchor well. What we didn't expect to find was another hidden water storage area inside the boat filled with SALT WATER, that was only discovered when it was ground open and the water fell on top of Nino's head! Nino has never been the same since and now has random outbreaks from his exposure to the pond water.
We show the whole process from start to finished, including problem areas being ground out, the salt water being discovered then cleaned, how it got in, and the repair process which has only just been finished by Nino from Stickells Marine.

You are so fortunate that Nino came back! Based on all of the issues found with your cat, it seems to me Leopard should not only pay all of your invoices, but they should also carefully watch your videos so that they can gain the knowledge it seems they need on how to correct the manufacturing so they eliminate these issues going forward, and they should also pay you for all of the time you have lost when you should have been sailing! It's not about manufacturers specifically. It's about generations of boats. Even high end boats like Balance, Outremer and the like have numerous issues that present in waves of manufacturing. It's all a luck of the draw. I stand by purchasing an older boat that has proven to be a well built one.

Every inch of that hull needs to receive ultrasonic testing. When composites are infused you have no way of knowing how well the inside of the infusion has turned out and that is why it is important to use non destructive testing methods.
After grinding everything out the boat should have been put on a barge and transported to one of the big boat shows for all prospective customers so see. With as extensive as defects this boat has the manufacturer should have replaced the boat.

You are seeing the results of production demands versus excellence of techniques. If an excellent product was the goal, far more staffing would be needed to coax the fiberglass layers into those sharp corners with more, slower curing resin to aid the process. Instead, time management and production numbers become the goal and build quality suffers. I had to fix countless situations like this during the 5-year build of my fiberglass homebuilt aircraft. the last six months were spent finding, fixing, and prepping hundreds of these before paint.

There's only one cause for these fibreglass issues/disasters you're finding. That is unskilled labor.
Obviously Leopard used the cheapest possible labor possible for their fibreglass lamination staff with little or no training.
I think I heard you say it was vacume bagged. If that's the case and you have found some dry areas then I'm sad to say you'll find a lot more yet.
Honestly that boat should be thrown on the scrap heep and replaced.
Your commitment to repair it is amazing but I fear this will be your life for years to come and at some point it could be truly life threatening.
To be in a storm and realizing your yacht is twisting and breaking apart due to the bulkheads having dry joints would not only be frightening but absolutely deadly.
There might be an electronic probe device like a hardness tester crossed with a thickness tester that could identify dry areas but I don't know of such a device and it would be further complicated by different materials and various thicknesses.
You can't even sell that boat, not only do people know about the ongoing problems but to sell a death trap is unthinkable.
Perhaps your efforts are better spent in creating something positive and helpful from this experience for others to benefit from and create a go fund me page in the hope of enough support to buy a boat that is worthy of your trust AND your life!
In my opinion it is insane to put yours and others life at risk by sailing this yacht any further than swimming distance from the shore!

    • @travelsketch
      @travelsketch  Месяц назад

Very astute, It was initially was a death trap, so Trent refused to sell it on. You don't even know the main reasons why because I haven't uploaded them yet. All of these issues have been fixed. we are millennials and have struggled to make the money to get to here. Even Trent, he will never make his money again to use while young. "Perhaps your efforts are better spent in creating something positive and helpful from this experience for others to benefit from and create a go fund me page in the hope of enough support to buy a boat that is worthy of your trust AND your life! " We begin work helping yet another owner with a faulty boat this coming week. We do our best every day. We have a plan and a confident we will get something at the end of this for our suffering.

This has contributed to the degradation of the product as a whole as there is little public accountability. Sisu speak positively of Robertson and Caine while not having their warranty fully covered while ours has been. Shows how they train customers to their own detriment. Clearly building junk has got them here. Maybe making the another hundred boats with windows peeling off isn't a good idea and consumers need to change approach like you say.

Further to my comment on your latest video. I'm slowly going back through your archive to get an idea of what's going on.
Taking a critical look at the situation, my assessment is that the lack of quality control, is most likely due to the use of 'low skilled labour in South Africa. From what I hear and this is pure hearsay, although it is plausible, R and C have major problems with the trade unions.

You need to assume that much hull/structural issue means over time it will continue to delaminate. You need to write it off. And cats by their nature have a shelf life due to the nature of their structure and fatigue over time.
My advice is to buy an older monohull if you want to cross oceans, or another older cat if you want to hang around shore.
This will be an issue with many boat builders all trying to make bank while the market is hot much like every hot housing market wherein the homes are made so poorly.

Designer, builder and surveyor for 50 years of all small craft in all materials. My best advice is....Strip the gear and burn the junk hull and deck. Sue for a new moulding and have your insurance pay for an independent surveyor to supervise the process from start to finish. Any professional would condemn this moulding and to entertain 'repairs' is utter madness. The stresses on a heavy built GRP cat at sea are enormous and bad moulding cannot be trusted with human life, especially yours. Good Luck folks.

If this was me, I would insure, launch and try to return to the builders. If, on the way you hit a shipping container or have a fire on board and the vessel sinks or burns....result. Make sure your liferaft and safety gear is good.

The contractor found the voids and water, not us. The boys have checked many catamarans now and remain objective. Repeat gelcoat cracks and voids full of water are unacceptable on any new catamaran and I doubt many would agree that this is OK or normal.
