I know a lot of people don’t think this drama gave justice to the leads but its a realistic ending depicting how innocent lives and loved ones were taken for the sake of “governance.” The gwangju uprisings were and still is a painful and embarrassing history of korean society with still lots to learn from it.

Students at Jeonnam University in Gwangju (which still exists today) were protesting against the authoritarian Chun Doo Wan administration that came to power after a military coup de tat. In efforts to suppress those that were criticizing his seizure of power, he used the government to claim that anyone who spoke out against him were north korean spies. And so a series of martial law, curfew, and military violence started in Gwangju in 1980. Gwangju was literally cut off from the rest of the country and all students at that time were basically considered conspirators and tortured or killed by soldiers. Anyone who was out during curfew was killed, anyone who was family with a student who protested for democracy was considered a spy, and just random people that the government or military didn’t “like” were tortured and killed. The authoritarian rule and the protest for democratization did not end until 1992 when the first democratic election was held and maintained. Thousands of korean students risked and fought for their lives and the democratization of Korea for 12 years. And thousands more died. What’s brutal is that many of those in the military were the same age or friends with students who were fighting for democracy. It was really just a difficult time for any student in Korea at that time. But, I do think it worth mentioning that if it were not for these 12 years of suffering and sacrifice, the democratic South Korea we have right now would not be possible. It was a necessary step for the development of today’s Korea. I’d also like to mention that this same democratic movement is happening in many other Asian countries such as Thailand, Hong Kong, and most recently Myanmar. As much as its heartbreaking to see the same military violence occurring in these countries, we must remember that their fight is a necessary step towards democracy and advancement. AND, we must remember to support their movements! For anyone who might be curious, I was born in Gwangju, but grew up in the states. My mom is from Gwangju and was in middle school (at Gwangju) when the Gwangju protests happened. And, my mom and dad were student protestors in the 1987-1988 protest that happened in Seoul. So, the history hits home.
I highly doubt that the young Heetae visit her grave. He waited for years until they found her corpse which means she doesn't have any grave. The HeeTae seen in this part is technically a presentation that, He was still the same Heetae who loves her in their youth. It shows that he has still the same amount of love he has towards her.
Some people might feel it's too cruel, but i think it's realistic. In the real life, maybe there are several couples who end up like MyungHeetae. Losing their soulmate, but they must continue their life, even without their soulmate or their loved ones Pd-nim, all the actors, Lee Kang-ssi, KBS, all the staff i want to say thank you for this drama🙏
It breaks my heart so much.....I'm not just telling bcs it's a sad ending but my heart just feels heavy bcs of they not ending happily together and she had to die in a very horrid manner leaving Hwang Hee Tae with a broken heart and just pain Like this can't be it..... no matter how much I'm trying to understand the plot... ending like this just gave pain to Hwang Hee Tae and all the the people who saw the drama LEE DO HYUN & GO MIN SI really Deserve a Happy Ending in a Good Romance drama their chemistry is just so beautiful
I hope Lee Dohyun and Go Minsi can have another drama being the main lead cause I love how their body actions and the script gives emotion but as well as their eyes cause eyes can always tell it is a amazing technique they have.
i cried a river for them 😭 go minsi and lee dohyun portrayed their characters so well, from sweet home to youth of may somehow both have that tension although here they have a loveline & portrayed an actual event, lee dohyun's character in sweet home also faced this kind of ending although its subtle and now go minsi's character faced a tragic farewell, they really do make me want to cry huh, mellow couple indeee 😭 i hope lee dohyun and go minsi will meet again in a light romance in a film project since it might take a lot of time to see them again in a drama together😭
“The tide always pushes me back, to the May inside my heart.” Too good of a love story: unique, lustful, pure and so lovely. His love endured until the end for her. I was really satisfied with the ending, he got closure from finding her body & now she is by his side. Only true people can appreciate this art. YOM best drama!✋❤️

I know some of the viewers may not like the ending cause it’s sad but in reality it happends in real life and it shows how some survive and some can’t but over all Youth of May did a great job it’s beautiful yet painful. It is still a happy ending somehow. 41 years of looking for and finding someone you love with all of your heart is like living like the dead. The discovery of Myung Hee's skeleton is Hee Tae's healing, also his closure. He had himself an Angel looking over him. Just like the airplane, he'll live afloat now 🙏🏼❤️
I think this is my first time crying non stop over a drama until its very last second, even I couldn't stop crying for a few minutes afterward. Looking at the whole story and meaning behind it, no matter how I think about it, sad ending is actually the best thing for this drama. Though after actually watched it, the pain is extremely real. And with this, I bet it'll definitely remain in many people's hearts for a long time. Thank you so much for such an amazing and touching drama... This definitely gonna be one of my lifetime dramas.. Don't know if it's possible, but I really hope to see Dohyun and Minsi work together again with a happy ending for one last time :")

What people who are whining about the ending don't realize is this isn't just realistic, but historical. I don't believe that dramas should always be realistic, but since they based it on real events, they have to give due respect. How insulting would it be for the 600 people that died if this drama had an out-of-place fluffy ending? Think outside your kpop and kdrama box a little and realize that South Korea isn't just the source of your entertainment, but a country with its own history and people.

This drama really broke my heart like no other. 💔 After all the pain Myungheetae went through, this is their end. Truly hurts alot. And the fact that there could be a Hwang heetae and Myunghee out there surviving without their loved ones really cuts deep 💔 making it so unforgettable. 😭 Month of May and June 8th can never be the same for me. It will always be a special yet saddening memory in my heart that will remain forever. Not just the drama, but also the Gwangju event. May the departed be at peace. 🕊️😢❤️
Loved this realistic drama. One of the best this year.The lead actors chemistry was so good.All the supporting actors did a great job. The ending was just perfect as everyone knew the story is going to be sad because of the history it is based on Lee Do Hyun is going to be one of best upcoming actors.

I have to say this drama was really well made, well directed, well acted. Their love was so deep and have like this different aura from other dramas that i have watched. Goodbye to one of my favorite dramas ever. I will really miss it. I know that the ending is sad. It was predictable since the first episode. But it is very realistic. This is to show many people around the world about the innocent lives which were taken back then. I want to thank each member of the staff including the leads of course for delivering such a warm drama despite the amount of sadness in it. Good choice of each actor and actress. I really wanted it to be longer though. The ending is added to Moon lovers ending. The sad endings that will stay in our hearts forever!
Two days has past yet I'm still here. It is such a melancholy story. And the idea that someone out there long time ago experience the same amount of pain is heart breaking. The years of waiting, the "what if" he has and the time he hopes she is still alive. Kudos to everyone who made this amazing film. It is beautiful and timely. I know I'm weird but I love the ending and their sad story. It's realistic and beautifully told. Despite the years and the distance their strong and pure love stayed. They both wait for each other and look after each other : Myunghee from the sky and him by regularly going on her grave. I find this ending much more powerful than a simple wedding and a lot of children because no matter what their love keep going and they will be with each other once they met again in the afterlife.
You're not weird trust me. This has to be the most beautifully tragic but realistic ending there ever is. The drama really portrayed how many people lost their loved ones during the Uprising which is definitely so tragic. This drama is amazing. It better win many awards OR ELSE
41 years later Heetae is still the same😔 He still seems very easygoing and a happy go lucky guy but deep inside he’s suffering from so much pain and is a very lonely man 😔😔 I feel so sad for him

My heart aches so much for them but I love the approach to tragedy they took. It just reminds you to remember the good times when trying to process tragedy because whilst the feeling of pain can be sharp, it is the happy memories that linger and help you move forward.

i don't know why people are complaining? do some of you not know it's a TRUE STORY, it was never a happy fantasy romance drama to begin with, it showed all those victims who suffered, died, lost their loved ones in the uprising that happened in 18th May 1980 ! it continued, people fought, protested for democracy, human rights and died, tortured, severely injured ! even the innocent people apart from the rebels suffered and went through the same ! there also may be couple like myunghee & heetae who had ending like that in REAL LIFE, people are still living in pain till this day, honestly i think not giving it a happy ending is how they really DID justice to it, it's to show the viewers the reality, people lost their loved ones, but their love remained strong forever in their hearts ♡

What people who are whining about the ending don't realize is this isn't just realistic, but historical. I don't believe that dramas should always be realistic, but since they based it on real events, they have to give due respect. How insulting would it be for the 600 people that died if this drama had an out-of-place fluffy ending? Think outside your kpop and kdrama box a little and realize that South Korea isn't just the source of your entertainment, but a country with its own history and people.

This drama really broke my heart like no other. 💔 After all the pain Myungheetae went through, this is their end. Truly hurts alot. And the fact that there could be a Hwang heetae and Myunghee out there surviving without their loved ones really cuts deep 💔 making it so unforgettable. 😭 Month of May and June 8th can never be the same for me. It will always be a special yet saddening memory in my heart that will remain forever. Not just the drama, but also the Gwangju event. May the departed be at peace. 🕊️😢❤️

A tragic, realistic, but beautiful ending. Their love was so beautiful. Lee Do Hyun’s voice is also so nice. Listening to him in these last scenes really brought out all the feels.

I have to say this drama was really well made, well directed, well acted. Their love was so deep and have like this different aura from other dramas that i have watched. It was also so realistic but tragic but it was their love for each other and the way they portrayed it that made it a special drama for me. Their chemistry, and their love story was so beautiful and once again the love between them is so stong, one of the best if not the best.

Goodbye to one of my favorite dramas ever. I will really miss it. I know that the ending is sad. It was predictable since the first episode. But it is very realistic. This is to show many people around the world about the innocent lives which were taken back then. I want to thank each member of the staff including the leads of course for delivering such a warm drama despite the amount of sadness in it. Good choice of each actor and actress. I really wanted it to be longer though. The ending is added to Moon lovers ending. The sad endings that will stay in our hearts forever!
Two days has past yet I'm still here. It is such a melancholy story. And the idea that someone out there long time ago experience the same amount of pain is heart breaking. The years of waiting, the "what if" he has and the time he hopes she is still alive.
Kudos to everyone who made this amazing film. It is beautiful and timely. Waiting for more beautiful films in the future 💖.

Lee Do Hyun u r amazing. I laugh much when u r so adorable & cute . I've so many butterflies in my stomach when u turn on your charm & charisma. U can make me cry a river with your saddest & most alluring voice with the naunced acting. U deserve all d awards ❤❤❤
I know I'm weird but I love the ending and their sad story. It's realistic and beautifully told. Despite the years and the distance their strong and pure love stayed. They both wait for each other and look after each other : Myunghee from the sky and him by regularly going on her grave.
I find this ending much more powerful than a simple wedding and a lot of children because no matter what their love keep going and they will be with each other once they met again in the afterlife.
I'm okay with the ending too but I just can't help to feel the pain!
You're not weird trust me. This has to be the most beautifully tragic but realistic ending there ever is. The drama really portrayed how many people lost their loved ones during the Uprising which is definitely so tragic. This drama is amazing. It better win many awards OR ELSE

I can't remember the last time I cried until YOM made me do. I've been a fan of k-drama for years but not a single one made me cry. I really love this drama from the cast, storyline and more. KBS! Why make it only 12 episodes? Still congratulations YOM for the success

My heart aches so much for them but I love the approach to tragedy they took. It just reminds you to remember the good times when trying to process tragedy because whilst the feeling of pain can be sharp, it is the happy memories that linger and help you move forward.

i don't know why people are complaining? do some of you not know it's a TRUE STORY, it was never a happy fantasy romance drama to begin with, it showed all those victims who suffered, died, lost their loved ones in the uprising that happened in 18th May 1980 ! it continued, people fought, protested for democracy, human rights and died, tortured, severely injured ! even the innocent people apart from the rebels suffered and went through the same ! there also may be couple like myunghee & heetae who had ending like that in REAL LIFE, people are still living in pain till this day, honestly i think not giving it a happy ending is how they really DID justice to it, it's to show the viewers the reality, people lost their loved ones, but their love remained strong forever in their hearts ♡
