    I think this collection really shows something amazing - as much as Bones teases and ribs Spock about being Vulcan, I dont think it's ever half as mean as it comes across. Bones knows that Spock is half human and pushing away that humanity does him no good, so he calls him a "hobgoblin" or whatever else and pushes him to feel emotion not because he hates Vulcans but because he knows that Spock needs to accept his human half to be healthy (McCoy does have psychology training after all). It's clear here where emotions are being forced on him (which by everything Bones has ever said should be a dream come true for him) but instead he begs them to stop, because he knows that it needs to be Spock's decision. By the movies, Spock does accept his human half more and I think that's what Bones was pushing for along, plus he knows that it's the only approach that'll work on Spock (who enjoys arguing with Bones too)... just my 2 cents haha

      You can see how McCoy gets nervous, maybe even embarassed when Kirk asks. He knows that his behaviour towards Spock would disappoint Kirk immensely, as it should, so he tenses up and resigns himself to what Spock will say. I think he was relieved and grateful when he realised Spock wasn't telling. And it was very gracious of Spock to lie about it...

    I've personally always liked the friendship between Spock and McCoy more than these two with any other character. Spock by far has the best relationships with everyone from the original crew. However, there's something about these two that is just such a natural friendship. I think the reboot films misinterpreted their banter for arguing or animosity between them. Spock and McCoy spoke to each other this way because they were that comfortable with each other. I always got the impression they trusted one another more than any other character on the show.

  • @trwent
    @trwent 2 года назад +47

    The whole McCoy - Spock bickering was the brainchild of Gene Coon, sometimes known as Star Trek’s “forgotten Gene” to distinguish him from creator/producer Gene Roddenberry. Coon’s contributions to the show were very substantial, and he wrote somewhere in the neighborhood of 15 episodes, including “A Piece Of The Action” and “The Trouble With Tribbles”. Sadly, Coon died of cancer at the age of only 49 in the early 1970s.

      @@plls2880 Immediately prior to this scene, we see Bones inject Spock with a sleeping concoction from the 'hypo'. ... Spock, as commanding officer when Captain Kirk was not present, had decided that he himself was to go to the torture room, instead on McCoy (Bones). The aliens were allowing the three - Kirk, Spock, and McCoy - to decide among themselves who would go next... Yet Dr. McCoy circumvented this by the injection of sleeping medicine into both Kirk, and then Mr. Spock, so that he (McCoy) could choose himself as being the one to go.... I believe the aliens (and I forgot the name of the race) had formatted the situation thusly: "We need to do one more experiment. Dr. McCoy has an 87% chance of dying, and while Mr. Spock's life is not in question [if you choose him] he has a 93% of brain damage resulting in permanent insanity."

    This the Artistry destroyed by modern Star Trek...from the ridiculousness of the cost cutting that had Birds of Prey to suddenly become Battle Cruisers with 70 foot windows in STNG 'Yesterdays Enterprise' and the shortcuts of making all Klingon ships Puke green...to the indescribable Horrors of 'Disc of Rey' Trek....and now, 'Petard'....my How we have fallen. All because a hand full of Cocaine addled Soy *oys decided they knew better. RIP Star Trek...I remember You.

      Well man, cool how yall throw shit on today's generation, when all u did was the exact same we're doing rn. It's not like the movie made sense b4, especially all the season 3 thing of vulcans having souls when back in season 1 they pulled out a fight on Sarek dying. They made it for money and u fans can't look up at the truth so u just blindly follow what other ppl say. Go on talking shit abt the new movies, it's not like I care, I ain't even seen 'em. But b4 talking of cost cutting, I'd get informed at least. Jeez man, for real tho.
