Gong Farmer would make a hilarious RPG class. As perks, a gong farmer would have bonuses to disease resistance, endurance, climbing, digging and two handed weapons (Shovels and pitchforks). However, they suffer a penalty to any charisma, appearance or speech checks due to the nature and perception of their profession. Gong farmers would also have class powers, such as inflicting disease on a successful hit and creating clouds of stench that incapacitate foes with eye-watering sewer aroma.
Bon appetit for everone who was eating while watching. Edit. WTF guys >1k likes. Edit. 2 The animation itself isn't disgusting but if you imagine how it would look IRL then it is a diffrent story.
In an RPG system called Dungeon Crawl Classics, this is one occupation a character could receive. I always wondered what that bag of "night soil" they get is.
Big Boss Cycladic cultures had sewer like constructs in 2000 b.c. The problem is that in larger cities you need a public administration to take care about it.
When the Roman Empire collapses there was really no equivalent administration like them for another 1500 years. Kings didn’t have the know how to develop sewers. The dark ages for Europe we’re truly brown.
Just image, when some ancient civilisations had somewhat "modern" sewer systems, like the romans - People in the middle ages where like "Nah, screw that, keep crapping into a hole and let someone dig that out". Almost 2000 years to invent a modern plumbing system .... The human capacity to endure misery and hardship seems to be limitless at times.
The closest we have for this nowadays are the ones who go down clogged sewers or waste reservoirs for barn cows. But at least they wear some proper equipment this time around lololololol
I've always taken care of my own plumbing/blocked toilet (Yuck! But it's my own filth)... Respect to all sanitation workers! Not all heroes wear capes! How about dyeing (coloring) and the making of parchment? They were pretty incredible and disgusting jobs too :)
There are still people doing jobs akin to gong farmers. Here in Canada, we had an incident a few years ago where three men were working together with a truck to empty septic tanks, which are used by homes out in the country that aren't on the town water/sewage system. I believe they were vacuuming the muck out of the tanks (which are underground) and piping the muck into a tanker truck. Some kind of problem developed in the tank of the truck and one of the men went in to troubleshoot. He didn't come out promptly and the second man went in to help. Both of them were overcome by the gases of the excrement. The third man went in as well and all three perished on the spot. I have no idea why none of these guys called for help by rescue personnel. I suppose they were in a fairly rural area where they would have had to wait a long time and thought they could fix the problem themselves more quickly. Whatever the reason, it was a real tragedy. And what a miserable way to go!
This job still exists in India, Manual Scavenging. Being a life threatening process, over 100s have died from drowning, suffocation and due to the aftereffects of inhaling toxic gases from drainage. India still hasn't adapted any technology to this.
You should definitely talk about sewer rakers. Those guys who went through the sewers and sifted through the sewage for loot. I know about it, but not many stories of it. I figure there’s gotta be more to that then “yeah, that was a job” end of information.
I'm gonna make a rare realism factor call on this one, the animations lack the presumed face coverings, no one would do this without something drawn taut against their noses
