  • Star Trails effect is a new night mode feature that lets you capture the stars traveling across the dark sky without any complicated post production. In this video I explain what you need to record star trails with your GoPro Camera , show all the setting that I recommend and finally explain the difference between 3 different Star Trails Lengths.
This feature is currently only supported for GoPro Hero 11 Black and Hero 11 Black Mini and works like a regular Timelapse or nightlapse, everything happens within the camera, there is no post processing needed.

I'm going to try this in conjunction with a rocket launch, which will be an orange parabolic arc across the sky. That process lasts about ~3.5 minutes and is pretty bright.
I think it could turn out pretty well. If nothing else, it will be an interesting experiment!

Tomasz, you always make such great videos!
    The music, I love it!
The fact that you show what someone can mess up, like the “sea fog” scenario, or the later when you pressed the shutter before sunset leaving the whole image like in day time was nice to add.
I know I made a great choice when I subscribed to your channel.
    Keep posting!
    Take care!

This video came at the perfect time! I’ve been looking to perfect my own setup. I’ve found a really cool angle although it is a bit risky. I put it on my GoPro magnetic clip and I attach it to my roof from my balcony. (The clip part on a shingle, not the magnet) I can’t say it’s safe for everyone but I’ve found my setup to be particularly solid. I have to figure out a way to get a battery pack cable up there somehow next. Thanks for the video, love the content!

    Boa noite

7:30 Yeah, that's my biggest issue/complaint with the GoPro "star trails" mode: whatever light is/was present, it keeps it in the shot for the total duration.
So you have to be super mindful of streetlights, car lights, passerbys with any lights, even turning on YOUR own light (head lamp to check on the gopro), etc. Bc otherwise it gets "baked in" to the video.
I wish it acted more like a time-lapse, where if there is a light but it passes thru, it will temporarily get brighter, but then get dark again as it keeps recording.
BUT that's incredibly nitpicky 😅 considering it's all created for you at a push of a button. That's pretty amazing.

    • @Tomasz.Nowacki

I’m going to be on a dive boat overnight. I’m sure the boat will be rocking back and forth throughout the night. We will be several miles from shore with few ship lights so the night sky will be intensely dark. Is it possible to capture any star trails at all from a gently moving platform?

    • @Tomasz.Nowacki

Sorry for late reply , the star project needs camera to be perfectly still , every photo takes between 15 - 30 sec of exposure it needs to be rock solid

The moon is what you probanly want to.avoid anf vhoose a night with no moon as u will.see more stars this way, thats what i did for my project and went on a trip k owing that there will.be no moon which can destroy a nightlapse,

Raw night photo, shutter speed 15-30 s (ideally 30) , turn off LED All, iso 400 or 800 , some.people might recommend 1600 byt its very grainy , color natural or gopro, ev 0, wb 3200 or auto, sharpness low,
