Very helpful, and at the same time frustrating now that I found out the Hero 12 discarded the Night-Lapse quick setting. It's not there at all. Any idea how to now access time lapse and night lapse with the hero 12? Thanks for your presentation. I do have the 11 and 10 units, so I'm not out of luck, these settings are available in those.
Don't have a 12 but, you should be able to create a profile and use the settings laid out in this video. Unless that function has been removed in the 12 as well.
You might not need the answer anymore, but just in case somebody else has the same issue (as I had it too but now solved)... To have the timelapse in 12, go to the settings menu and at the controls choose instead of easy, pro. That will bring the night timelapse into the timelapse menu
Thank you for the tutorial. I would love to have a tutorial on the Nighlapse settings for aurora borealis. I've found lots of conflicting information and I would really appreciate hearing it from an expert.
Shawn, an in depth how to video is greatly appreciated. It was kind of you to explain why this setting or that one. Gives a more informative touch to the how to video! Thanks again!
I just tried this out and your settings are great. Thanks so much! I’m new to this GoPro family! Such a shame that all I could see were clouds where I’m at!
Even with a video night-lapse, it theoretically is just recording a series of images in the background that it will automatically compile so it doesn’t require a huge card. It’s 64 GB card is more than sufficient, but I tend to use 128 all the time in my action cameras.
Cheers for this Shawn. I'm quite enjoying trying out the lightlapse with my GoPros. Haven't tried the Insta 360 in anger for that sort of thing. Not yet...
Thank you for this video. I am planning a trip out to Vegas at the very end of August to drive up to Tonopah to film the night skies and then drive off the next morning to Reno. Now i know what i need to buy. Just a couple of questions. Would this very same gopro camera be able to be used to film the drive from Vegas to Reno and exactly how many videos can it store?
Good day Sean, I have a question about hero 11. For some reason it will take the power bank power and the camera dies after battery is dead. Can you explain or is there some gopro settings for my 11? Tonight is 3rd time trying. Thank you
Yes, it was the peak design tripod. I ordered it when it was a Kickstarter several years ago. It was expensive but well worth it. Such a compact and lightweight tripod. It’s easy to take long everywhere.
Such a great tutorial Shawn! I will give this a try up on the north shore of Lake Superior at the end of August. You might want to give it a try if you're over this way. Over a dozen waterfalls in the area. Gooseberry Falls State Park is a great place to begin exploring.
A major flaw in gopro is that if you are using the timer function and have an external power source, it won't use the external power source. This is a major flaw.
Ive been using my hero8 for the last 2 nights in night lapse mode. The second night i a tually read this comment and decided to experiment. I let m camera do it in auto and i did a video night lapse. Both times my battery was at %30< and i plugged my camera in. When i plugged it in last niggt it read that it was charging but when i started my night lapse the lightning bolt symbol dissapeared (as though i took it off the charger) i let it go all night and said if it dies it dies. It did not die, it was still filming when i woke up and it said %32 now instead of %26 BUT while reviewing the video my battery dropped back down to %26. So you can film videos with it plugged in, but it wont change the battery symbol.
@@coolergappney1943 Thanks for experimenting! What I ended up doing was not use the timer function. I bought big battery banks and just record all night and then edit down in post... if needed. I still think both my GPH11 and my DJI Osmo Action 3 are funky / crappy along these lines, requiring us to monkey around with them. But hey, necessity is the mother of invention!
@@graphguy actually want to update that comment. When i night lapse conmected to power it doesnt display battery chatogn but records and shows time it recorded for. But when i was using time lapse at work today with different intervals it records but doesnt just shows 00:00 but reviewing the footage will show it DID in fact record. Has anyone noticed simialr occurences?
The night lapse on the hero 9 does not record the inter night only for a little bit. how can I fix this and thank you for the videos and the information.
How would a timelapse look if it was only for a few hours after dark? Visiting a dark sky park and also just using the regular battery, no external pack
subbed! this is awesome now i now gopro can be used for night photography, im 100% sold and will buy a gopro so i can use it for multiple purposes: - pc webcam - photo/video during travels - car dashcam - (as a beginner) for night photography/video ...more videos please on gopro used for night photography
This sounds fantastic! I've been wanting to learn how to create night-lapse and star-lapse videos with my GoPro. Your tutorial guide for beginners is exactly what I need. Excited to try out your tips and settings with my GoPro Hero 12 Black! 🌌📸
Hiiii!!! I hope you find the time to answer this… I was wondering if it would work well being on a train?! I’m doing a night train from London to Scotland 7 and a half hours… I want to sleeep but also want to get a few hours of footage for later
Thanks for the video! Btw. how is your Hero 11 Black compared to Hero 11 Mini? As I mentioned in a comment in your other video I'm returning my Hero 11 Mini because of problems with powering it up (It kept getting locked). Do you have issues with your Hero 11 Black?
@@AirPhotography Thank you for the reply. Do you mean you don't use Hero 11 Black a lot or that you don't use Hero 11 Mini? :) Would you recommend getting Hero 11 Black? I love time lapse / star lapse photography.
I just did a time laps on the gopro 12. I tried to double the speed on the quick app, but it makes the video look like it's pausing and starting. It looks laggy. What did I do wrong
Remove battery and plug the camera to a power bank that can output 2A or more, otherwise it won't work. With the battery in, it will use the battery and will not charge.
You can do time lapse overnight with the gopro 11? Darn, I have a gopro 9 and it only last 20 minutes until heat shuts it down and I lose the video. Guess I need to get the gopro 11. I guess I bought the wrong camera.
You can do the exact same thing with your hero 9. Just like the 11 you have to plug it into a Powerbank to give a power all night. It won’t overheat because it’s just taking a series of photos not recording 4K video. When it’s done that, put it all together into a 4K video at the end.
Having the battery door open would allow water or moisture to enter the battery compartment, charging port, SD card slot, and all other electronics behind the door. That is why other battery doors allow for an opening to plug in the GoPro while still sealing the other components All in all, a battery door that is open will allow water to get in and ruin the camera. Therefore, not water proof

ISO min/max should be 100. With the option of a 30sec shutter anything else is madness.

I’m doing a night train from London to Scotland 7 and a half hours… I want to sleeep but also want to get a few hours of footage for later
It won't work while moving the costs in any way. It's a long exposure, so everything will come up as a blur.

What kind of tripod are you using?
Hello, is it normal that my night laps videos are only 1sec long? I would like them to last longer, it's much too condensed...
Thanks !
Thank you so much!
You're welcome!
Do you put a battery in when using the power bank or leave it out?
I usually leave the battery in, but you can do either or
Where’d you get the cord from the camera to the power bank that long they’re always all short
A nice long one comes with that door that GoPro sell. Or you can get along cables on Amazon.
another ? i have a hero 7, I cant find a night lapse video option only photo? Am i missing it?
Would you apply same settings for metero showers?
You want to set your shutter speed as long as you’re able without over, exposing the image

What table?
Remove battery and plug the camera to a power bank that can output 2A or more, otherwise it won't work. With the battery in, it will use the battery and will not charge.
You need to show more love for the DJI Osmo 3. It's so much better imo
I agree stay tuned.
hi ! you still haven't released a video for photo editing :/?
my timelapse options on hero 12 does not have nightlapse mode why?
Reminder, you also need to provide for protection of the USB C ports on the battery pack. Hello, strips of duct tape!
Won’t the GoPro overheat recording that long ?
You need to add an external power pack
Not unless the weather is really hot. The data rate being written is very slow compared to video. Plus its night time so its always in the shade :)

My GoPro batteries (2 batteries) got swelled.. normal batteries,,, though I kept it with all precautions
That is very interesting. I’ve had GoPro batteries go bad, but I’ve never had them swell. For me, they usually just stop taking a charge.
Wait so why is it not water proof here? Because your charging it? I’m sorry I’m new to gopros. And I’m scared I’ll do something to the cámara.

I thought GoPros overheat? Is that just the haters that say that?? I keep going back and forth between DJI and GoPro for an action camera.
Yes, they do overheat but when doing a night laughs it’s just taking a series of photos. I Donely overheats when you’re recording 4K or 5K video
