Casey Neistat's SECRET to Filmmaking

  • Опубликовано: 6 июн 2024
  • Recently I got to sit down with Casey Neistat, and I knew exactly what I wanted to ask him about: he posted a vlog a few weeks ago that was written by ChatGPT, and it was by far the worst thing he’s ever made. So I wanted to see if we could get to the bottom of what exactly it is about @casey's storytelling that’s SO MUCH BETTER than AI. What makes Casey so freaking good at crafting a narrative? I don’t think we answered the question entirely. That might be impossible. But I think we got a good start. Hope you enjoy!

For this reason this was a very hard watch. You cant teach his creativity nor can he explain it. Its natural to him and thats why no one has managed to come even close to his vlogs. He is a 1 of 1. Some things he can say like known things about positioning the camera, framing etc. but the rest is his uniqe experience and milions of hours spent filming and editing that cant and will not ever be replicated.

Casey's process is like doing improv with himself. To record, or edit, one moment, and just move straight to the next moment, trusting the process to take you to the realization of the idea you have in your head. It inspires me to ignore the inner critic, to not let overthinking get in the way of doing.

I agree, I feel that to an extent Casey is letting the inner critic be, but not giving into it. There needs to be some sort of critical "this is the way to do this," but the way to do it is to just let things flow naturally. In my eyes, it's the inner and outer struggles that bring life to his video. They create a story arc, which he packages so playfully into well executed, intriguing videos.

    • @Yodd
      @Yodd Год назад +6

It does slow your process down and more importantly it has a lot of potential for unnecessary work. Sometimes it is better for the overal endproduct to leave some things out. If you edit those things and do color and text only to realize that it doesnt work for the story, you waste time.
Also it is always faster to batch things together. If you do text you can open a workspace that allows you to text efficiently, for color the same thing. The more you switch the more time you lose.
With that being said, you should do whatever gives you the best end result and most enjoyable experience while editing.

I think Casey nailed it when he said 'it's pure intuition'. So often we want people to tell us the how and the why but sometimes there isn't a rule or a plan or to it, it just feels right. This is where creative talent comes in and the blurred lines between understanding what works and why to a degree but not being formulaic, sometimes you just need to feel your way through a creative process.

This video is incredible. It shows that Casey wasn't eager on the interview and was trying to skim off things at the start but your digging deeper into his psyche helped reveal a lot of what goes behind the scenes. It's highly relatable because as people who made a conscious decision to make films and learn about the process are mostly insecure about whether they have what it takes. Hence, the pursuit to find what drives creative people to do what they do starts. This is an exceptional class in intuitive film making and as he says, it comes with years and years of experience - there's no secret sauce, only pure intuition refined over time

Fantastic interview! There is a way of telling "how" you do something, and a way of "showing" the viewer how's it done, and you've accomplished that. Agree with Casey on so many things. For instance, locking down a shot may be boring for viewers with a short attention span, but it's critical. I remember the Bourne series switching from Liman to Greengrass. Both are great storytellers, but Paul can't lock down a shot for the love of God. It's difficult to watch in a theater. Something I learned while constantly talking to writers about story when I worked for the Writer's Guild, was that yes, story is #1, but #2 is overlooked quite often as an afterthought. Number 2 is music/score. It's so important and most don't know how to use it to tell the story. Casey constantly nails it. Thanks again for this interview.

I have seen countless people trying to capture Casey's "secret sauce" and they always boiled it down to black and white rigid steps (probably how AI functions). But by doing that you really miss the "secret" of the sauce.
But YOUR video is amazing, because it shows how much of what Casey does, capturing and telling a great story, has become intuitive to his thinking. And the fact that he does not calculate everything, proof of how doing the work and practicing the craft, allows it to come out of him in such a natural and entertaining way.
Great video and a masterclass on the difference between learning a craft and just trying to imitate one.

This was extremely well put together. Really gives an insight into the filmatic "rules" and how much Casey knows about them, thinks about them and doesn't care about them while still caring. Great interview really made 40 minutes fly past!

This is gold. It takes a true creative to ask a creative what their process is like. Literally the best Neistat breakdown I've seen.

after working with casey the last 6 months... heres a few things, film in order, edit in order and do one thing only at a time ALWAYS. when filming a scene, only film 1 scene until good, next scene, and so on. edit, one video at a time. focus on thing at a time. btw glad you enjoyed the chatGPT video... the motion work took a while

I love this content! At times, Casey looks like, "How long are we going to do this?" Superstars are hard to pin down. Their talent is so ingrained. It's like asking Tiger how to play golf. He's done it since he was a kid. "You walk up and hit the ball, find it, hit it again." That's how you get good at something. Great interview. I took Casey's course and I thinki like this better.

25:00 reminds me of the training I had in martial arts. The saying goes something like this: "I am not afraid of 1000 punches, I am afraid of that one punch that was practiced 1000 times." 100,000 hours of editing? Jack you did such a great job interviewing Casey, I learnt so much from this video, this is invaluable. Thanks Casey, Thanks Jack!

Wow. What a great video. It really makes me appreciate the gift that Casey has, this intuition to make great video. I don't know if you can train it or copy it thinking your way through it (sorry Jack...), but it just really elevates Casey's work so much more, being able to deliver good films on a regular basis...
