    A nuclear flask train is the only train you would ever see on the line from Appledore down to Dungeness. The formation used to be 2 locos, 2 flasks and a guard's van. A couple of Class 68's in DRS livery would make a convincing representation of this train. The derelict Lydd station recently burnt down. So there's an idea for a layout there - a burn down shell of a station and a nuclear waste train! Thanks for uploading.

    • @ianjeffery6744
      @ianjeffery6744 Год назад +1

      I think it was Lydd Station that burnt down - New Romney (BR) went a long time ago...your point still stands, of course.

    • @RHTeebs

      For a second, I thought you were saying that there were nuclear flasks on the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch. 😂

    • @AllensTrains
      @AllensTrains Год назад

      @@RHTeebs There was originally a British Rail station at New Romney. The RH&D ran along side it. The line that the nuclear flasks can now be seen on is historically referred to as the New Romney line, although it now only goes as far as Dungeness.

    I could be wrong but if they included batteries with these, it may well have caused complications and restrictions with shipping these models in bulk.

    • @Damien.D

      Indeed. It's more complicated to ship stuff with batteries to certain countries or in certain ways.

    • @PeterSlack83

      That's likely, as you've added something new to the supply chain, installation and likely needing different licenses

      Usually those restrictions only apply to lithium batteries. I've never heard of any restrictions on button cells. Very strange to not include those, or the magnetic wand for that matter.

    Sam I received my two packs (4 wagons) last week and I am really pleased with them. Fantastic detail, run perfectly, rotating axle boxes that work and the icing on the cake? the flashing tail light. I did exactly the same as you snapped one hook that holds the hood when installing the battery. I was forewarned about the NEM couplings so ordered some of Accurascale magnetic couplings, which fitted with no problem but unfortunately they made the wagons too close and caused buffer lock. I fitted Hunt Elite close couplings and these fitted very easily and negotiate my 3rd radius curves perfectly. As regards the running of wagons, where I agree they are not very free running however my 4 wagons run around my layout with gradients with no problem. Great review with everything needed to inform would be buyers, Bill.

    The batteries aren't included because it really changes the shipping regulations. I'm pleased that the wand isn't included as I would end up with loads of them as the wands are the same for all the HYA hoppers which I also have several of.
    I ordered two boxes of these direct from Accurascale and they threw the wand in the shipping box for free so really can't complain at all. I got the batteries from my local discount store for less than £2. All good from me!

    Great video Sam, and I think the score was spot on. Yes expensive but they are worth it. Details are great and minor issues apart, a rake of two is all that is required. 2 locomotives to go with them. The perfect consist. The batteries with the models is a shipping issue that every manufacturer has. I am not against expensive models, and in this case, it is a good price for the two. What a good video. Thanks. 🎉

    The guys at the Darby Test centre. Smashed a class 45 or 46 into one of the older types of flasks and wagon. They look great. I've seen loads of these, having often gone out to see the 68s and 88s on the Hartlepool to Sellafield runs, always double headed (once even tagging a TPE 68 onto the front of the standard DRS pair). Sometimes they ran without a wagon, but the most I've seen on a working run was 4, and they usually run as a class 6, so top speed of 60mph. (I've seen a photo of a single 37 delivering 8, but that was a one-off.)
    I want a pair, but can't justify them atm with my financial situation.

  • @42cerberus
    @42cerberus Год назад

    Watched a full length train through Dunbar earlier this year. 2 68s double heading 3 wagons to Torness (empty), ran back top and tailed.
    Axle resistance in the model won't be a problem as the rake will be only 3 or 4 long. Sometimes you'll even see a single wagon being hauled by a pair of locos.

    My primary school was, and still is, bordered on one side by a railway line. Occasionally, trains would roll slowly past, carrying an older, but still rather sinister flask. These were carrying material from the then new Sizewell Atomic Power Station, a few miles up the coast. The flasks were loaded on to trains at a special yard, just outside the small town of Leiston.
    The trains were made up in a particular order, which sadly, I cannot remember nowadays, but it was a complete train for one wagon.
    A couple of years ago, I was coming home from work, and at one point, I had to go under the railway via a small bridge. That morning, there was a Flask wagon and engine crawling across that bridge. I hadn't even thought about these things for ages, and here was one. The only reason I can think it was there, was at the time Sizewell 'A' station was being decommissioned, and the flask possibly had contaminated materials inside.
    These are lovely looking models, indeed.(I love the miniscule padlocks on the Hazchem diamonds),Just the sort of thing I like to see. Nice one. 👍👍👍

    I’m pretty sure those journal bearing end caps come off. You could remove them, then use very fine-grit sandpaper to reduce their diameter ever so slightly, then fit them back on; there’s possibly a slight amount of flashing on these parts that wasn’t entirely removed during assembly.

    Wow, first impressions are fantastic. What a beautiful models Sam. We were immediately worried about the plastic of the flasks though tbh. As my other side does recognise plastics immediately (chief chemist), the first thought was... 'that's a lowest cost brittle ABS material flimsy made'..., and there we were..., immediately snapped indeed... Applying power pick-ups isn't exactly rocket science either. 2.5 Stars for quality from us. However, the models are absolutely beautiful. Pity about the quality issues and omitting pick-ups. But again, fantastic gorgeous models. Cheerio.

    • @SamsTrains

      Ahh very interesting - if that's true, pity they used cheap plastic like that... that said, the piece was so thin that I can see it breaking quite easily regardless of the material!

    • @lindaoffenbach
      @lindaoffenbach Год назад +2

      @@SamsTrains Well it depends on the material for a great deal though. E.g., PVC is a softer material which can handle very fine latches quite easily. It wouldn't break. In the worst case a very thin film would have been scraped but PVC is a tad more costly.

    Just a quick note on fitting batteries, if you read the instructions, it tells you to separate parts 5 and six, thats the main part of the hood, and the back wall of the hood, that's the bit connected to the fine clips that everyone seems to be breaking, if you lift the main part of the hood up nice and slowly, whilst holding onto the back wall and the clips, the main part should separate easily without damaging the fine clips and brackets, parts 1, 2, 3 and 4... slowly and carefully does it, don't go mashing your sausage fingers into things !

    Seriously impressive model. The quality of the text is fantastic, the little light that works is amazing to see. All the details under are not molded! These are separately made and glued... for a place no one ever look at...
    Regarding the drag induced by the rotating axle boxes, it's no big deal at all because these wagons doesn't run in large trains, a pair is the regular consist size and if there are 4 it's an unusual sight, at least it was this way in France when nuclear material were hauled by train (but it's more or less a thing of the past thanks to environmentalists that goes "omg radiation" for no reasons and now the heavily armored rail cars equivalent of these ones have been more or less retired and everything is mostly transported on trucks if not anonymous flimsy white vans....).

    Interesting to hear your comments about the price. They come out at £37.50 each whereas you recently tested a straightforward four wheeled Bachmann brake van that had an RRP of £50 (near as dammit). By comparison, the Accurascale flask wagons are cheap as chips for what you get. In fact, Accurascale seem to be producing Rolls-Royces and selling them for the price of a Ford Focus which makes me worry that their sums add up. By the way, regarding the rolling resistance, I fit my brake vans with phosphor bronze pick up strips (even if they don't have any electrics) to make them a little draggy (as in friction, not wearing a dress) because it is very effective in stopping a train of wagons from hunting at slow speeds.

      For comparison Bachmann's FNA wagons are £50 each. They aren't bad but are all plastic and don't have the rotating axle boxes, lights or sprung buffers. By these standards, the Accurascale wagons are a bargain.

    I do love me some unsual wagons, IRL these are never ran in big rakes and always double headed for a little redundancy. I'd also say the flashy light is a nice compromise for DC and DCC users as I doubt you'd get that flash consistently from DC power

    • @SamsTrains

      I do too! Thanks for sharing this too - glad to have the extra info! Exactly, the battery light removes any complication with DCC, but the down side is that it's a separate closed system away from your main controller... once you get a handful of those on your model railway, it becomes a pain!
      Thanks for watching, Sam :)

    Sam, when you are talking about NEM sockets, could you add in correct HEIGHT please ? this could be done with a NEM plug-in Kadee coupler and a height gauge, so many NEM sockets are at the incorrect height, there IS a standard for this...

    The axles aren't pin point bearings so there's bound to be a bit of friction where the plain axle passes through the bearing with the rotating part on the end. Perhaps a little light lube needed. Just a thought 🤔

    I admit I was disappointed that Accurascale did not include the magentic wand with a model obviously designed to need a magent to turn on a feature. Especially at the price. However, once you unboxed it, the overall detail, the amazing attention to keeping it like the prototype, separate fitted parts that are all solidly made. In the end it this has impressed me, even at the price.
    Regarding the batteries, even if the light was left on 24/7 the batteries would likely last well over a year just blinking.
    Having a closer look at those catches, the are quite deleicate, but it looks like there would be a way to kind of move them, but whoever is doing it would have to be so very careful. Love the detail, but maybe they should not have been part of the retention mechanism when batteries need to be fitted

    Sam did you see when they set a retired cl46 to literally smash into a flask wagon to test vulnerability of the flask wagon, They had tha wagon across the test track and the cl46 went over the top of it at high speed for no damage well worth seeking video out.

  • @Eric_Hunt194

    The drag factor really isn't an issue- these wagons rarely if ever move around the network more than two at a time. You'd never need to have a massive rake of 10+.
    The older Bachmann FNAs will probably be cheaper on the second hand market thanks to these!

And no wand - WTF (Wand To_not_be Found). But your review got 4 and 7/8 out of Five (nobody's perfect). Thanks for all you do. Until next time (long train horn here)!

    Luckily these nuclear flasks are incredibly safe. They test them by flying planes into them, running them into a concrete wall at 60mph and derailing the train with a truck to make sure they wont leak in the case of an accident :)

    Hi Sam great honest review, i had issues with my set, they will get sorted, i will look into the axel box situation, its worrying that this issue will pop up in the revised class 66 Accurascale got off Hattons, i would rather have the pick ups from the wheels, i know the cost would have been a lot higher, not going to rate them until my issues are sorted, the Bachmann offering looks like a Railroad product. these are great wagons to be fair, the lack of batteries is very poor from Accurascale, they are sending me a wand when they arrive in stock, i will never buy another item like this from Accurascale again, the issues i had have put me off, i wonder how Revolution Trains nuclear flask wagons will fair compared to Accurascales offering, thanks for sharing.

    The batteries you fitted are 1.55 volts, not 3 volts. Two of them will give you just over 3 volts. A little drop of oil in the bearing housings may improve the rolling quality of the wagons. Despite the couple of small problems you have mentioned, I agree that the wagon pack is definitely good value for money, and they are excellent models.

    I wonder, if the bogies, need a break in period, as a locomotive needs because they do have proper bearings

  • @matthewneleigh567
    @matthewneleigh567 Год назад

    My thoughts- proper bearings are great for locomotives, but for rolling stock, needlepoint bearings in acetal plastic frames tend to produce the best results. What cars I've had with high-contact-area bearings (with and without rotating bearing caps) have never rolled as well as their needlepoint-equipped counterparts, so these results don't surprise me.
    Mind you, rotating caps are a cool-looking feature, but unsuitable for anything that might be marshalled into a long rake. Fortunately, these FNA-D wagons wouldn't be.
