My wife and I saw Superman II in 1981 in a large sold-out theater on its second night at a time when you had to travel some distance to see the latest releases in a few select theaters. The audience of all ages totally loved the movie and when Superman burst through on the left side of the screen near the end carrying the flag to place it back on the white house, the theater erupted in yet another loud roar of cheering, happy that a single individual had made a difference and righted wrongs. Then the audience became silent when it realized he was going to speak. When he said to the president, "I won't let you down again." an innocent young boy in the front row, so caught up in the moment, blurted out, "We know you won't, Superman!". The audience laughed and cheered in agreement with his assessment of this symbol of heroism.
2:21 One of the best “breaking the fourth wall” moments in movie history. It’s as if Superman is looking at you, the viewer, to say “I’m always here.” I miss Christoper Reeve so much. He was a hero to so many people in real life and brought hope to millions around the world. He will always be the definitive Superman. Fly high Christopher Reeve! ❤️💙
I'd seen this film many times over the years before I realised that the end shot is different from the first film, as he brings his arm forward in this one 😮
One of the best cinematic endings ever. If Christopher Reeve was still alive, the conventions and fans would adore him. He would have been so happy to see the impact his characterization of Superman had on modern and new fans. We wouldn't have the great superhero films of today without him.
I swear, the simple act of him looking up at the flag makes me feel more patriotic than just about anything. You can see he believes in it and all that it stands for in that simple look.
In a way, Superman looking at the flag of the US reminds him of the ideal that he should strive for, but didn't. He did fail, but he rose to the occasion when he needed to do so. I wonder if we as a nation will remember the ideals we have established and strive for them, no matter how much we have failed in the past.
Yeah, I would of liked too of seen Donner on the helm of Superman III. The reason why the first one worked so well, was it was played seriously. The camp elements were left for Lex Luthor and Otis. Just my opinion.
When my family saw this the first time at the theater, the whole audience erupted when they saw the flag scene! That was the time of Reagan and he put the U.S. first. What a flick. Plus Terrence Stamp as Zod!
@49ers2000 yeah right. Reeves was a Democrat and advocated for a lot of the stuff we see today. Reagan is by far the worst president we've had next to Donald Trump. The 80s was a decade full of violence and drugs and a rise in poverty. I really don't see how so many ppl love Ronald Reagan when his presidency was marked with nothing but poverty and reluctancy to handle aids, drugs, or anything. Plus he sold American ppl out to capitalist which is why mortgage prices skyrocketed which is why you'll probably be working until your 60s......whoopy Doo?
One of the most patriotic moments in cinematic history, when he looks up at the us flag after that line....... And im from Dublin, yet I watch this about once per month . R.I.P. chris
The grin on Superman's face before flying off sells the scene. Everything is going to be ok. Hokey & predictable ending but it worked. That's what we want in our superhero movies in the end after all.
Same. I always feel that was his way of saying goodbye to us fans. Don't get me wrong I enjoy Superman 3 for what it is but, those first 2 movies really defined the superhero genre, blockbusters, and cinema as a whole. I hope he's up there inspiring others like he did to us....
The way he says 'I've been working out' and does that motion with the arms to indicate using gym equipment is so cool. I think he obviously brought enough money to cover the first lot of damage, which he caused - due to not being prepared for how vulnerable he was. He has said in the comics about being known as a boy scout and not minding that. The point is as we know, he prides himself on doing the right thing, hence he would want to cover all the damage simply because he felt responsible. As we know, part of the ethics of being a scout is a moral sense. I believe Lord Baden - Powel did make that clear.
This makes you proud to be an American? Wow, I can name quite a bit of real life things that makes me proud to be an American. A Superman movie, no matter how entertaining, is not one of them. Well I guess some folks where their culture on their sleeves.
I'm 31 and this will always be one of favorite movies because my father and I watched whenever it came on, this movie is very special to me because of that
I remember my sister took my brother and myself to see this the week it came out. Lots of cheers and applause. My brother and I loved it. More Marvel fans than DC, this was the icon Superman, and the big fight between Superman and the 3 Villians, we were blown away. This was the first time that happened on the big screen, and if it wasn't for Superman, we wouldn't have the Marvel epics we have today. Lots of cheering and laughter whenever Gene Hackman made a joke. Being in the south, these especially loved the hick sheriff. Good times.Miss my big sis. Saw Return Of the Jedi and E.T. with her too.
Three things: 1) I saw this in a packed theater as a nine year old kid, and the whole place ERUPTED when Clark Kent walked in the diner again. Everyone knew what was about to happen, and it was so satisfying to watch. It was one of the best kept secrets too. 2) A scene like this today would almost certainly be a post-credits scene, which doesn’t at all take away from how great it was. It handled, from a plot perspective, a minor detail, but, to us in the audience, it righted a wrong in the most Superman way ever. 3) I only noticed today that after Clark explains to the diner owner “oh, I’ve been working out” he turns to walk out but not before pausing for a brief second to stare straight into the camera, breaking the fourth wall, acknowledging to the audience that we’re in on his secret. Very subtle, but another way Donner was ahead of his time.
Ken Thorne’s score in the flyby scene to end credits is the most properly synced score out of 4 Superman movies. Ken Thorne scored Superman II and III. Watch all the flyby scenes of all 4 Superman movies, then you’ll see. I’m just here to appreciate Ken Thorne’s work. :)
The actual last line is "Sorry I've been away for so long. I won't let you down again" and then when Bryan Singer made "Superman Returns" he attached it to this movie and what does he have Superman do? Run off into space possibly never to return.
"Good afternoon Mr. President. Sorry I've been away so long. I won't let you down again". That was the best thing that anyone could have said in my childhood ❤.
different director, different direction. have you seen the Donner cut of Superman II? I would of preferred his cut over Lesters. Donner filmed 80% of Superman II, but they had to quit filming too finish Superman I, and make it to the release date.
Yes, I've seen the Donner cut of Superman II. And, like you, I prefer it to the Lester version. But I think the ending to the Lester version makes more sense, at least to me. The whole turning back time thing shouldn't have been used again. The first time to save Lois? Sure, that's fine. But for Superman to do it again? That's excessively playing God, even for Superman.
+doc I think Bryan Singer's Superman Returns is more of a nod to Donner's Superman I I cut. Superman had sex with Lois before renouncing his powers. Causing her too be pregnant. I am not a big fan of SR. The suit was all wrong and the story was downright boring in about 70% of the movie.
+doc it is possible that Singer had conversations with Donner and what he filmed for Superman II, back in the 80s. Donner had 80% of II filmed. But they had to quit filming too make the Christmas release date of Superman I. Donner was then fired and all the scenes with Brando cut, and refilmed.
The smile at 2:21 literally turns me every time into my 7yr old self with dad flying me around the living room. Always makes me smile but always brings a tear to my eye.
I love everything about this scene. Teaching the bully a lesson. Perfect comedy timing from everyone-the subtle looks, Rocky being a prick to the owner, Chris Reeve pushing his glasses up, everything is spot on. Love it! Don't make em like this anymore I'm afraid
The American Flag flying high. I was 11 when this movie came out and every time Superman did the fly by at the end and smiled? He was smiling at ME! Best memories as a kid in the 80s.
osskeet That sound is great but the one where the foley screwed up is when Superman lays the new flag post into the White House. It should go “THUD!” but instead goes “clink.”
Dean Strickson you stole my answer! For years I have been so annoyed when he lays down that cement block...we know it's made of fiberglass but COME ON sound department!
I saw this in a crowded theater in 81. When they cut from the fortress of solitude to "Rocky" in the diner, the entire theater erupted in a "yeah!" moment bc they knew Superman was going to right yet another wrong. So satisfying. This scene can be seen also in the Donner's cut and there it's totally without sense. The guy of the cafeteria shouldn't remember Clark or what happened with the truck driver because Superman changed the past in the Donner's cut as in the first movie.
Donner filmed it so yeah it is in his cut but imo THE WORLD TURNING BACK IS SELECTIVE AND ONLY AFFECTS CERTAIN EVENTS AND PEOPLE AND IS NOT A TRADITIONAL TIMETRAVEL DEVICE BUT RATHER A EMOTIONAL DRIVEN SELECTIVE ANOMOLY EVENT DEVICE! Thus why lex remembers vaguely being in the fortress in Returns, lois remembers events of II and knows Clark is superman and that they were together, the people in the dinner recognize him except the bully for obvs reason that Clark wanted justice and to payback the bully, and Jimmy and Perry are semi remembering where they've been since events of II, and in 1 Lois is saved and Jimmy is saved but missle never hit and everyone is alright thus showing that he CHOOSES when and what events are changed! He is more human than you think!!! 😉
I can't fault Dick Donner for not wanting to use Lester's footage when the Donner cut of the movie was put together in 2005 but I would've kept this flag scene in. Especially these days
"I won't let you down again."
You didn't let us down, Supes. Studio executives and filmmakers who didn't understand you did.

Incredibly sad fate for Reeve. Makes me think of Michael Schumacher too.

Always thought that
That awkward moment when superman acts more American than captain America
To be honest they are two of the purist comic characters they just radiate heroism.
And that’s why we love them
Funny how Captain America is inherently right-wing, yet, he only fights those further to the right than him.
Yep Reeve's Superman never gave up on America unlike Endgame Cap lol. Captain America literally morphed into Joe Biden and retired lol..

We are here because we know this was a great ending!!
Wow. That felt like America. Real America. I miss it!
Love Marvel but they haven't made a movie that even comes close to this
I can't fault Dick Donner for not wanting to use Lester's footage when the Donner cut of the movie was put together in 2005 but I would've kept this flag scene in. Especially these days
the smiling is perfect
There was only 1 Superman both in the movie and outside in real life: Chris Reeve
Have you ever been fooled?
Me: Only once... I believed a man could fly... :')
"This order's to go."
I LOVE his voice and smile
Love that smile when he flies away!
Christopher Reeve is Superman. Period.
That ending from each of the films, I just love it so much! Once again, the world is safe, thanks to Superman!
