Definitely appreciate the effort, however "Mies" is pronounced with a long "i" and the "e" is silent and "Knoll" has a strong "K". Enjoyed the insights nevertheless - great work.
Yeah, not in all cases... I did not understand the pronounciation of the Finnish designers Eero Saarinen and Eero Aarnio at all, but I knew the chairs so...
One of the best museums I've ever been to was the Poltrona Frau museum in Italy. You could see history through changing furniture design, it was so fascinating!
I'm one of those who think that modernism definitely did humanity a favor. One of the things I like most about Mid-Century Modern is that it's a reflection of the philosophy of the time: the preference for practicality and functionality without losing sight of an elegant and light aesthetic that undoubtedly adapted much better to the lifestyle of twentieth century society. It's still a very current style. I have an Arco lamp from Barcelona Designs and I'm in love with its features. Great video!
When we talk about the modern interior, we should not forget Mr Ingvar Kamprad and his company, IKEA. It made many modern interior items accessible to large masses.
Yes, but unfortunately Ikea is becoming more and more "mainstream", apparently to sell to the broader market. I've also noticed that less and less of their once incredibly made products, have been cheapened up and are now being manufactured more in Asian countries and not Sweden, like they were to begin with.
God, non sponsored content is so refreshing. Awesome video, these are absolute classics. Barcelona Chair and Eames Lounge Chair & Ottoman are my favorites.
@@toonsoffun5733 The company is producing their own content and integrrates plugs to their products. They are not sponsored by third parties that have nothing to do with content (Skillshare, Harry's Razors, box subscriptions etc).
Now you're talking! This is my jam. Love you guys! Now do a video on Mod. Fred Perry, Baracuta Harrington, Bass Weejuns, knit polos, Sta-Prest trousers, three-button suits cut just past the waist w/ narrow lapels, ticket pocket, side vents, usually in interesting colors or patterns.
I really love your videos and appreciate the time, effort and research needed to put these together. As for the humor, outtakes etc continue with it. It makes this channel unique and entertaining. Kudos to these young men.
Awesome!!! 👏🏻 I watch your channel just to see nice things, to educate myself and to relax and It always works!!! To see people talking about style, about beauty in lots of forms feeds one's soul! Even if I can't really use all your dressing information, being a woman, still makes me feel good watching you!!! Thank you!
This is the first time I stumble upon this channel, and I’m in love, literally. I need more of this in my life and i need Preston in my life, i need that man to be my man 🥰
what about: Arne Jacobsen "The EGG" (60s) and Gerrit Rietveld Red Blue and Yellow chair (10th) Charles Rennie Mackintosh the the Hillhouse Chair (10th) le Corbusier LC 4, (20s) Eilin Grey Round table (20s), all of which, are must have's in modern interior design, very eye catching, as stand alone, just like Charles Eames, and Mies van der Rohe
I have the Le Corbusier chaise lounge, Le Corbusier two-seater couch. Barcelona chair with Ottoman, Marcel Bruer Wassily chair, and an Eileen Gray end table.
As for me, Scandinavian modernist designs are the more elegant due to it's more warm, human-like appearance and shapes in contrast the cold European tube-syndrome (probably triggered some gentlemen) designs. One of my favorite designers like Alvar Aalto and Hans Wegner, especially Wegner, treat wood with enormous respect and let it show it's great qualities, what I really admire. Aalto, as a good example, has made beautiful shapes but also used always birch wood as it grows like mushrooms out of the ground in Scandinavia, which is more cost-effective but also much eco-friendlier then the expensive (and often endangered) exotic woods and steel used in works of the typical European cannon. Yes, I like wood more then metal but still have respect for the (social-minded) mid- and post war European modernist way of thinking and aesthetics. Ater all you've done a great job, as always, and mentioning the top icons is totally fine and not a mistake for sure, but still, it would be just a bit more professional to mention also the more 'unknown' (or at least overlooked by the majority) design pieces. Once more, great respect for you and your efforts and keep the gentleman subjects coming!
I have no regrets about the re-production Eames I bought a while back. The finish and construction are very good as is the quality of the materials. That said good reproductions still run a few thousand dollars.
Yes I like the Eames lounge chair... Or a similar design with easy to clean leather. But you only want 1 because a standard sofa or couch is better for reclining, and can seat 3 if needed. It would be nice if the footstool had adjustable height. I like somewhat masculine decor. Luxury Decor gives me the stressed feeling of: "Gee, I hope I don't break something."
This is my style. Although I didn't hear the words Art Deco once. In my house, I have: Le Corbusier Chaise Lounge Le Corbusier two-seater couch Marcel Bruer Wassily chair Barcelona chair with Ottoman
I am a little disappointed you did a whole video on modern design, and not even mentioning Danish design, it was huge during that era, and a lot of high-quality timeless pieces came from it.
Good video. Nice intro for those not too familiar with design (which I'm betting is most guys). One pet peeve, though. The bar cart with the lamp (13:06) has the lamp's power cord just hanging out in space, flapping in the breeze. Not a good look. (in the computer/electronics/gadget age it's unfortunately quite common.) It doesn't take much effort to run the cord down the leg of the cart and make it much less visible.
Modern now is vintage but seems suitable for the clean modern cut suit. The style that seems more fitting for GG more 30-50's style would seem to be more a 50s vintage. Well done video, a ton of history and sources. Every girl's crazy about a sharp dressed Preston.
Perfect timing. I sub'd. I'm in the beginning process of completely changing my apartment furniture..look & style. Actually, the sooner the better. I appreciate the style & decor advice.
While I'm not a fan of Modern styling generally, I am all on board for more houseplants. 😁 Pothos, aka "devil's ivy," is another great low-maintenance plant that trails attractively. I also like the "UFO plant," which has a unique leaf shape very appropriate to the mid century modern aesthetic.
You're a brilliant person, Preston, and, an influence on my own style choices. But, please, note that the English word "often" contains a silent "t". We shouldn't say Off-Ten as often/"offen" any more than we would say sof-ten as the English word soften/"soffen".
A lot of people think that they can design their own homes and have them look and feel is usually not you want a practical and beautiful home, it's way better to hire professional interior designers like the ones at will always create functional and beautiful homes.
I was very surprised that none of the plant recommendations are available in the Gentleman's Shoppe at Fort Belvedere "available here" next to the boutonnieres!
