Everyday I find myself getting closer and closer to all things archaic and old fashioned. Last year it was what I wore, then fountain pens, and now my desk. Soon my entire lifestyle will parallel that of a 1920's banker.

@@romanov7723 I'd probably recommend any local furniture store, locally owned, they might have some wooden desks that have an antique feel. Most of those types of desks probably have a front panel

I got most of this stuff either starting or graduating high school (c/o 2000), because I was raised by a sorta traditional family. But I never used any of it, I didn't understand most of it, and I gradually got rid of all of it, including the desk itself. Lately, I sort of want it back.

Classic story man, problem is most of this cool old stuff isn't properly appreciated or explained to people, its left in the hands of either very fringe hobbyists or very obdurate family members so it ends up associated with said annoying people and their overly strict and at times bigoted views

Adding to the thoughts on keeping a tidy desk...
You need a "blank working spot" on your desk. This space is to always remain clear, unless you are working. For example, your keyboard and mouse uses this space when you are working at the computer. If you need to write something in a notebook, move the keyboard and mouse back to its home, then work on your notebook.
When you are done with the notebook, put it back in its home.
Have a designated "work space" on your desk that you keep empty.

As a German with very poor English, it is often difficult for me to listen to your language for long periods of time, but I have to openly admit that your voice is absolutely brilliant to listen to, the gentle intonation and speed when speaking is pleasant and gives a feeling of familiarity. The classic desk is my general way to go. I prefer antique bronze clocks amd lamps, leather trays and desk mats, and wooden items that work well together. There something’s I can’t do much about being a software engineer but with a little bit of planning you can keep that mostly hidden away such as your laptop and dock and made it so even my monitor can disappear when not in use.

and if you cannot find a sutible used desk at a thrift /antique store/ searching facebook marketplace/craigslist (and if you have the money to do so) you should comission one from a local woodworker over purchasing a mass manufactured desk. the quality will likely be much higher (or about equivalent), and can often have features that would be difficult to get on a regular desk, or only really found on compleatly custom/specialty company desk.

Love this! I like a blend of modern and traditional. My desk is a motorized sit-stand desk (modern) but its surface has an aged wood look (classic). I have a monitor and laptop (modern) but right next to it a banker’s lamp (brass with green shade) and Bulova clock that my company gave me for ten years of service. I need a letter tray, probably will go classic with that. Might get a pen holder too. Regarding pens, I do have a fountain pen and love it but to write notes in my notebook throughout the day I honestly find it to be a bit of a hassle so I just use my ballpoint pens.
My next improvements to my desk are to get letter trays and clean up the papers and letters that are currently an eyesore and then tidy up all my wires. I’m going to get simple Velcro wire management/sleeves to make my desk less cluttered.
So for me it’s modern in function but with classy touches…kind of like me myself.
    Thanks Gentleman’s Gazette!

I have quite an unusual mix of styles, where the desk itself is modern frosted glass, but I accent it with vintage pieces like an old British GPO Type 332 phone, some leather accessories, and some vintage fountain pens.
The vintage phone was restored and repainted in a lovely Cadbury purple, as well as rewired to work with a modern British phone socket, but in a couple of years I'll have to figure out how to connect it to a VoIP system to keep using it once BT switch over to the new systems and drop support for the legacy phone lines.

You can also look for retro designs. For example, if you like the aesthetic of type writers, they make retro themed keyboards with the same form factor as a typewriter. They have all of the functionality as a modern keyboard {usb-c, Bluetooth, lithium-ion batteries} but have the same look as a typewriter.

I prefer a more modern desktop today to keep things updated. Truly curious by the way and I know it's a bit random but it would be pretty interesting if you did a future video on what you all would wear to a theme park. I've always worn t shirts and shorts while attending one during my trips to Orlando to visit my grandparents but next time I'm out there I will think about upgrading to my moisture wicking polos and a pair of drawstring Seersucker pants that actually resemble Linen. While Cotton is amazing it takes quite awhile to dry after water rides which is pretty much the only negative. Performance Fabrics such as long sleeve t shirts are also helpful to a certain point but then again they wont protect your neck from the sun. Throwing on sunscreen can be a bit of a hassle at times but anyways Appreciate all the content you put out so thanks again to the entire GG team.

I would be interested to see a garment care video specifically on disinfecting/sanitising clothing. That is, removing germs from clothing. The problem is that detergent doesn't remove germs by itself. I've looked into multiple perspectives on this, such as using bleach, alcohol, vinegar, etcetera. Each of these methods always seems to have some downside and shouldn't be used all the time, however. I've recently looked into separate disinfectant sprays which can be used on clothing, alongside cleansers which can be used in the wash cycle. There's also things like handwashing with soap, sundrying and ironing, which can also play a part in sanitation. Would this be a concept the channel would be interested in covering?

@@rickybobby6760 Sorry to break it to you, but if you wash a poopy T-shirt only with detergent, the poop stain comes out, but the poop germs do not.

@@TheSultan1470 That's repulsive. I could've used any other example of germs. Sweating on clothing long enough will lead to germs building up in the fabric.

I just want to stress how long I’ve been waiting for someone to go into detail about desks. It’s such an obvious thing but I’m kinda sick of saying “yeah that’s just the desk that I felt like getting” and dealing with a lame desk that doesn’t suit me. I may also be a little bit insane in that regard.

Home desk = Whalen 72" Metal and Wood industrial workbench. I prefer standing. For sit times/visitors = 28" x 28" x 26.5" wood carved table with two chairs, same dark wood stain as the Whalen. I'm looking for that perfect video light that doesn't reflect in the eyeballs, or other. Not a fan of the Ring lights. Side note: Yay for no-product hair; looks way better. Thift shops find me lots of old style desk accessories in marble or wood or brass. my desk clock is the outlier - crystal.
