I’m trying to give it some time having forwent the animated original, I don’t know why I expected “Lord of Rings” Peter Jackson storytelling, but I did and this ain’t that
Like I know it can’t and in all likelihood should not be as efficient and sharp as the first few GoT seasons or “Blue Eye Samurai”; but these teleplays are way too thin… And when they find something interesting, the show all but tells the audience ‘we’re movin on’

Even without knowing the MoS line, the word "pretend" is just weird in that scene, there's no pretend. "Can I just keep being your friend?" works just as well.

I just realized that Aang is to Gyatso what Korra is to Toph and Zuko😢
For those interested, Gyatso was played by Singaporean actor, Lim Kay Siu. IMO he was definitely one of the highlights of the season and added a lot more personality to the character in the little screen time he got this episode. The show was smart to have spent more time fleshing out his relationship with Aang.

36:15 As someone who hasn't seen the original - it absolutely works.
The opening with the messenger shows me what bending is, shows me the political/tactical side of the Fire Lord, gives me Pappa Palpatine vibes off the bat.
The peaceful times in the Temple area show me Aang's connection to Gyatso and the life he loses there.
The brutality of the attack shows me the stakes and the ruthlessness of the fire nation.
Then when they see the ship and when Sakka challenges the prince, I don't need a bunch of extras going ooh ahh the fire nation is bad.... Like I feel the fear for his village that Sakka is feeling, coz I feel it in my gut too, and I don't know the story, maybe they are going to turn the cove to ash just like the sky temple.
Same with the end scene, seeing Gyatso's skeleton and Aang's face is all I needed to feel that moment with him, because they gave us all these emotional anchors at the beginning.
As another uninitiated, I wish I could be so generous: story and lore is interesting sure enough, but these shooting scripts are postcards not pages; it’s just not efficient enough and burns through conversations starved of character work and drama, especially with what’s covered on camera
Your post reaction conversations are what makes this channel so great. You made a great point about the younger actors comparing them to Harry Potter. Sure they don't start great, but they'll grow into their roles.
I’ll just say this, my dad doesn’t know the cartoon, he watched the show with me and continued watching all the way through and enjoyed it, even looking forward to season 2. So I do think this show works well for a new audience, and it will get many of them to watch the original animation too.

I loved the extra dimension that some of Sokka's behavior is because he cares. He's discouraging Katara from bending because he's scared the fire nation could come back and kill her, and he has to carry the burden of protecting the whole village.

I'm sure you guys are ahead already, but the only advice I can give is try to be open to changes! I personally think this show is getting more hate than it deserves. A lot of the changes make sense for a condensed live action. And when you think about it, doing a 1 for 1 would hurt the cartoon if everything was exactly the same. It's definitely not perfect but not trash like some people are trying to make it seem like.
oh yeah, check our intro, I'm really proud of our ability to accept this show on it's own terms and as an adaptation in both it's good and bad choices! And it has both!
I honestly question reactors who constantly question why adaptations are different. Are you new to life? This show is downright delightful. Not perfect, but like you said, not trash either.
@@NinaPB the thing that irritates me the most is when people comment getting upset about something they think is wrong but not actually remembering the show correctly, and they'll be like, "Bro they can't do that!" Or "Dude that didn't happen!" When in fact they're just forgetting details 😂 it's okay to forget details; but when your automatic reaction is to get mad at the adaptation, then it's clear you want a 1-to-1. Some things happened out of order or in a different fashion; and as long as they made sense, I didn't mind too much. There were only a couple things I wasn't a fan of with the changes, but I'm waiting to see if they get resolved in the next couple seasons (fingers crossed they happen)

Another criticism that has nothing to do with wanting an exact live action copy is the fact that they have corny monologues that over explain what’s going on as if the viewers are incompetent and unable to interpret things we watch…
they took away Sokkas character development
I mean some of these reasons for the hate are simply just the writers flaws and it wasn’t a problem in the original KIDS version
All in all I think what die hard fans like myself wanted to see is the same childhood tale we know in love but brought to life and out of the clutches of nickelodeon where it had to be childproofed. We wanted to see it in the real world with gore, real violence, real adult relationships and real world issues so we can better relate to something we hold bear and dear to our hearts
Just the thought of how far the original show could’ve gone being adultified is almost a scarily good thought😂 just imagine all the crazy cool scenes we were deprived of because of the network

It's wild to me when people are freaked out about the kids at the air temple like... they know Roku died twelve years ago. They are here for the kids. The adults are just in the way.
I did like the brief convo between Iroh & Aang. When he asks the question to Iroh of the cause of the war, notice Iroh gives the Fire Nation Military/Nationalistic answer - but its only when asked is that what HE believes, Iroh gets this look and wraps the conversation short.
You know he does think differently but does not want to discuss such things at that moment (the War, The Siege of Ba Sing Se, Lu Ten, etc) but says he looks forward to future conversations.
I thought it was a nice & very telling scene.
Idk if many ppl notice but one of the little airbender kids is actually the actor for little Shang Chi

I absolutely love what they are doing so far!!! There are few tiny bit picks I have like with Katara’s acting at times or wishing we got to see more creatures from the world and more cute or comedic wholesome moment…But overall I’m loving it!
And I even love some of the creative liberties they have taken…That entire Kyoshi fight WAS SO EPIC!!! I now want a Kyoshi spin off! lol 😂

I loved it all, I cried a lot through this first season. It looks great, the actors are really good. It is a good for me. I never have expectations going into anything and I love it so much more because of that.
I love the live action version of the invasion because shows the brutal nature of the firebenders attack on the air nomads, these mfs killed the kids too.
In the cartoon, the temple ruins and Gyatso's skeleton were enough to establish the Air Nomads' extinction, but Jesus, the new content of them being actually killed was too confronting to watch again.
I miss when netflix originals were 10 to 13 episodes

Gordon Cormier was the surprising part in this first episode, his acting got better and improved in the later episodes
honestly i loved the live action series. it’s great for people who have never watched the cartoon version. although yes i can understand why people hate on it but i think it was amazing
Regarding the fight scene between Aang and Zuko in Zuko's room, I actually think it was a good idea that it got axed - at least, the way it had been done in the original cartoon. The memorable part of that scene was Aang smacking Zuko around using his mattress. Which would completely demolish the sense of dread and scariness of the Fire Nation that the live-action built up during its opening sequence.
And they got the that vibe from the fight in Ep 3 in Omashu
I thought the first episode was good, but i wasnt totally sold. By the end of the second episode, i was hooked.

Aang was really told he was the avatar and this whole life changed then he took a nap and woke up 100 years later and his life changed again that all happened in like a day to aang like that’s a lot

I have seen a few reactions already but have been waiting for your reaction.
From what I can see, the main criticism I have for this adaptation was the writing and acting of certain lines. They are honestly cringe and weird sometimes because they annunciate and narrate everything. I don't know if it's a design choice or just their attempt at shoving stuff in without having to show it.
I always laugh at people complaining about a bad adaptation. No matter how you feel about it (I liked it, but had some criticism), it is also a massive advertisement for the original.The adaption will be top of the charts for a week or 2 then the original will top the charts for 3 weeks. Also, telling new fans how they should feel about the adaptation turns new fans into nonfans.

I dont want to spoil if you haven't watched the cartoon but essentially you are right. In the cartoon, with the timing of the death of the previous Avatar, the next Avatar will always be born immediately after.
Based on that start point till the year the comet came, Sozin would have done his calculations.

I loved this first episode. It was great visually. The fighting was good. The kid actors inexperience shows a bit but it’s not bad so that it takes me out of it. They do better as it goes imo.

You guys are absolutely right when you said first time watchers would be put off if Aang just starting riding penguins instead of going on his mission. That's actually what stopped me from watching the original series several times. The opening hyped me up for an elemental war but the main characters were fucking around like it was a Saturday afternoon. I enjoy this version a lot more because they kept the innocence but kept the "we're at war" tone.

Amazing cinematography, amazing special effects, those animals, spirit animals just amazing, and their powers, the visuals look great and the backgrounds look fantastic! They're all amazing! Gordon is a brilliant, fantastic actor for his young age, and he is so cute; he has a million-dollar smile too. Dallas is a versatile actor, he's amazing actor. Kiawentiio and Ian are amazing too. Paul, and Daniel are very good too. All the cast members are really doing a great job. Congratulations! This is the best live-action adaptation of Avatar the Last Airbender so far!♥️

8 episodes at 1 hour each can cover 16 episodes shot for shot. They could have omitted the waterbinding scroll episode (the pirate parts), the Canyon, the Northern Air Temple and combine the episodes with the bounty huntress and the foreteller lady (or just omit the latter). The episode with the storm is also unnecessary if you sprinkle the flashbacks into other episodes. I wouldn't want it be a shot for shot remake, but they could. Point being, there shouldn't be any issue adapting S1. It's not like One Piece where you have 44 episodes in the East Blue arc.

@@SeanTanktop They could be an hour. The shortest episode is 47 minutes. 6 of 8 episodes are 52+ minutes. The cartoon was 22 minutes an episode, not including the intro and recaps. So they'd even have time to spare for new stuff. The live action episodes average 54 minutes. I'd rather them do things differently mind you, but they could still fit in all the good stuff in their retelling.

The OG is my fav version ever & can't be topped but, sometimes, Gloria Jones' Tainted Love ends up with superb & (both) totally different covers by Soft Cell & Marilyn Manson.
I guess in this case the movie was a cover of Tainted Love done by a school band that only had kazoos & a whoopie cushion. 😬

Its totally okay to enjoy the show , but its getting annoying how people are defending it before realsing aang never waterbends once and it feels like it was made by zack synder , This entire show is judt people yelling at a 12 year old boy who blamed himswlf in the cartoon and had actual reason to unlike this aang who basicaly just went for a walk to clear his head , now instead of learning any actual lessons , he learns friendship is good , and he must use his divine power to crush his enemies to fullfil his destiny , cause apparently free will doesnt exist , and the only way u can show a warrior is to have her tell aang hes a faluire and should feel guilt , instead of him telling himself not to mention how katara and sokka are generic cw versions who barely have a personality , and theres still people who dont know sokkas actor is a liar who pretened to be a native american band member , and has had over a year but no evidence they are actually native . And katara has no personality like a generic disney princess

I watched it twice the same day it released 😶🌫️😶 I loved it, as one who grew up with the original series as well, and with Korra. And there are nice ea steel eggs and homage to the cartoon.
The landscapes are awesome, our heroes have cute faces, but everything else feels (Be Kind Rewind) « sweded » to me 👨🏻🔬

Hot take: the visuals could have benefited from some Zach Snydering; a lot of these have that very laborious but unfocused CG such that stuff isn’t framed very complimentary … the Morbius school of ‘*more* artifacts and elements is *more*‘
Oh Iroh will grow on you. Watched this whole thing in basically one sitting. There is one character that i felt was really missing and episode 5 made a few odd choices for me but overall i liked this adaptation a ton!
The actor is wonderful, but he’s not getting pages - pretty much none of these actors are

Justice for the Cabbage Man
First episode, super, super hot out of the gate. Great stuff. Unfortunately as of episode 4, it's been a downhill slide, with characters very much looking the part (for the most part), but the speedrun feeling is so real, and they keep putting shit that wasn't there before, not in addition, but instead of what was there. I'm not digging the remixes and collapsing of stories, not one bit.
So there's a musical cue that a lot of reactors miss, in a future episode, and I'm hoping you guys catch the one I'm looking for.
Let's remember that the original creators were on board with the Last Air Bender movie, were on set with the director and how did that turned out?
We need to appreciate and plauds for the hard working in making it. It has feelings the sadness sorrows , just need more episodes like 12 it's true 8 is less

I liked it. The shackles of being a Nickelodeon show are off. They have heightened the stakes . Fire Nation is not only terrifying in name only. A lot of the choices make sense even if the execution is not always perfect. They thought seriously about it. Katara has a different role and arc. Hard to get used to. We are getting a sense that Iroh is figuring out what he thinks. He's there for Zuko. Now there is an avatar that he didn't think would be there.
You seriously thought episode 5 made sense be for real.
Never thought about it until now, but Uncle Iroh's favorite dish being roast duck, but there is no such thing.because every animal has banged some other species. Is Iroh against animal crossbreeding?
To be honest I dont get this 8 episodes trend, it was always 10 at least to be called season

I’ve never watched the animated series. I know of it and some of the characters, but I don’t know much at all about the story. It’s on a long list of shows both animated and live action that I really need to make time for. That being said, this show hits for me. I watched the first episode, but I stopped so that my wife and I (who has watched the show) can watch it together.

I watched the first episode with my sister. I've seen all of ATLA, she hasn't (only maybe a few clips), and she said she was interested in watching the rest. So I think it could hook some non-fans, for sure.
