Here’s what’s hamstringing my enjoyment of this show: I spent high school watching Zhang Yimou movies, which pins my hopes for the animist/elemental mysticism outrageously high; and maybe I just expecting too much out of the dialogue, especially after “Blue Eye Samurai”
I’m sure it’s doing fine at worst, but I’ just too crusty for it to really sing to me

As was shown in a clip Kyoshi does manifest in the animated series but it was in a random town for the trial. It makes so much more sense for Kyoshi to manifest on the island that a shrine was dedicated to her and that she would want protected instead of town she wasn't deeply connected to.

Yeah, I saw a vid by a scriptwriter/fan, “The Sword and the Pen Reflections” here on YT, and she discusses script changes and why they might be good/ necessary. She points out that it was kind of a loophole the animated left open that there was no explanation for why Aang couldn’t just channel an earlier Avatar from the outset to do all the fighting; so making an explicit rule lets them do stuff like this early on without folks wondering why Aang can’t just go straight to the final boss.
Seriously, check out her videos though. I think they give great insights into things that might confuse fans relating to how they’re dealing with the material

Personally, I liked the changes the show made to Sokka and Suki's relationship dynamic. I feel the show provided clearer reasonings what drew them to one another; particularly in Suki's case. Sokka appreciated Suki's strength and determination as a warrior. Meanwhile, Suki appreciated Sokka's courage in leaving his village to take an active role in the wider world. Each saw traits in the other that they valued and viewed themselves lacking, as well as inspire them to pursue those areas.

First with Roku who obliterated his own temple after Aang first contacted him to help the Team escape Zhao. It was definitely an adaptation, but I was never one to expect a 1v1. I didn’t want that anyways. Some of the changes hit hard at first, but the more I thought about them, the more I was ok with most of it. Even all the characters grew on me. Moving forward, less exposition, more showing. Also, I see your Korra references writers, and I’m here for it.

Furthermore, it wouldn't be right for him to invoke the spirits of previous reincarnations to solve a current problem, he is the avatar now, not them, he has to learn how to solve his own problems
Kyoshi made an exception because there was no time and he couldn't solve it alone, but in the case of the fight against Ozai he DOES have time to learn how to win on his own

Sokka's sexism lasts for 3.5 episodes in the cartoon. The total screen time of actual sexist comments probably doesn't exceed 2 minutes. Then there are 50.5 episodes after that with no sexism. It doesn't define him as a character. There was no arc. No real development. He got beat by a girl and it was done, just like that. Instantly. Sexism over. People whining were just the anti-woke crowd looking for the next thing to cry about. They've moved on to X-Men '97 since Rogue doesn't have enough cake. Obviously the entire series will be crap now.🙄
I think it would have been pointless and feel silly and forced. Here it would have been 1.5 episodes. I agree they might as well just remove it unless they actually wanted to make it a season long actual character arc thru him seeing his sister's growth and he opposes the sexist traditions of the northern tribe at the end.

    Okay, everyone repeat after Sean.
Combining plot lines and making 'mash-up' type plots might not seem that great at first, but it's economic as shit, because they've gotta cram as much of it into 8 episodes as they can, and if they had completely focused on one or two threads, people would complain about it being too different, for not having this, or this, or that. But we get SO MUCH of it, and it has to be in 8 episodes.
If they had set out to write, cast, script, shoot, CG, ADR, etc. an exact 1:1 live-action remake of the original series... the bending would've looked like M Night. If they had spread this story out further, the production value of it would suffer. Live Action can not do everything that animation can. Animation can do more than live-action can.

    • @hellfish2309
      @hellfish2309 4 месяца назад +1

False Dichotomy - I don’t think this shoe us terrible, but your arguing ‘economical’ and ‘efficient’ are the same thing; even Sean thinks they burnt through these arcs way too quickly and wanted 12 episodes, and he’s not wrong
The amount of CG is fine, but the show needs more useful screentime… y’all are insisting “animation can do more than live action”, but failing to recognize all that live action and camerawork can do that animation doesn’t

@@hellfish2309 - Wait, you do realize that "economics" is about money, right? It's a matter of budgeting... maybe S2+3 will get a bigger budget, but they wouldn't be able to AFFORD to do that. Literally. You DO realize, they have to pay everybody, right?
The amount of CGI is "fine" because they had enough money to pay for eight episodes worth of CGI. ..... if they had done more, the CGI would've become a problem, financially.
Little annoyed at how quickly everybody jumped to "wrong" instead of "different" though. Then we can't judge the merits of an idea itself, it's just trash because they didn't do it exactly like the cartoon...

@@reflectionist you’re talking about thinning out the content to meet the time content but more critically the character drama to fit screen time constraints, itemizing like a rubric that had to citable in like a spreadsheet; efficient storytelling is delivering 600 words in a line of 6 words because the production has dramatic performers, cinematography, set/location character, music, props, costume, staging , and in sum total mise en scen such that the composition is much more than the sum of its parts
Just watch “Blue Eye Samurai” and consider how much more potent the dialogue lands with nearly the same screentime, likely a much more modest budget, and the around the same number of characters; granted it is animated, but then that contradicts the thesis of animated dialogue directness and shallowness, doesn’t it?
If “Blue Eye Samurai” were live-action not only would it be less expensive (because bending and battles can balloon budgets); but I guarantee it still gives actors fantastic opportunities to dramatize the dialogue… I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect more of that from a property as celebrated and storied as ATLA
It feels like Etsy writing, not professional; it didn’t have to be… and just to be clear, nowhere did I argue that the live action fails to stack up against the cartoon - I don’t have that basis of comparison

One Piece netflix adaption was great because they kept in the FUN! The ATLAB animated series was FUN. I’m now of the belief that ATLAB animated series was a masterpiece that maybe can’t be replicated or duplicated.

The original had cheesy lines too, it just doesn't translate well to live action because it feels so cartoonish. Sokka ends up being one of the best written characters because if you pay attention from now on, he rarely says why he feels something, he emotes. Maybe it's an age thing for the actors? But over time I got over it, but at first it also felt so tell not show to me haha.

I will afford them the charity of reminding you all this was written amid a brewing and imminent writers strike, LIKELY working with teleplay writers whom Paramount scouted, and Paramount ain’t great
They likely paid them peanuts, shoved them in a closet for 12 hours and took what they got and ran

@@Saphthings I honestly don’t think it has anything to do with the acting. If they had good lines and good direction, the acting wouldn’t be so rigid and terrible. It’s like watching the live action Lion King - soulless and lifeless like watching a stone emote.
