When Tenzin tries to be peaceful and patient like his dad, but clearly inherited his temper from his mother 😂😂😂
The thing about Naga is:
When the creators were first doing Avatar TLA, Aang's companion wasn't always going to be Appa. The original idea WAS a polar bear dog like Naga! When it was decided that a flying bison would be the companion instead, they reused the polar bear dog concept for Korra. Which I'm glad they did, something that flies is a better fit for an airbender, and something related to the cold environment of the Water Tribe is a better fit for Korra
Also Naga is very good in the water.
@@dcaslick And she is scary and terrifying but also cute when she wants to be
The fact that Naga means Dragon in my language lol
Korra uses bending to cause extensive property damage in pursuit of justice.
Avatar Kyoshi approves.
Not only did Aang and Katara name one of their children after Bumi, but they also named their daughter Kya after Katara's mom
Thank You. Folks always forget about Kya.
Actually, this is true, however Katara's name was originally Kya, but they scrapped it because Katara sounded better, later on using it for Kya in TLoK :)
@@noahb336 You mean deciding to use it as Katara's mother's name, right?
@@BlackGirlMarvel yea, I was under the impression they only used the name Kya for Aang's daughter, I hadn't realized they used the name for Katara's mother! That's awesome
And Tenzin gets his name from Aang’s monk friend Gyatso, as that character is based on 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso
The idea is that the 100 year war elevated technology and this industrial revolution, parallel to the way WW1 and WW2 advanced technology. The Fire Nation due to their element have always been ahead in terms of steel and metal works and manufacturing. Also remember the tech advancements made by the Engineer with help from Sokka. One assumes they continued their ideas. LoK therefore is set in the Avatar world’s industrial revolution and plays with how that changes society, and cultures with elemental bending; all in a steampunk aesthetic.
Don't forget now that there's world Peace the nations are actually sharing their technological capabilities with each other. Especially the Earth Kingdom which is always been rich and resources and the fire Nation which was already more technologically advanced. Now that they're able to work together, as it dives into a little bit in the comics, industry is much more capable of taking off
*and having ditched the asian culture
@@onetom2222 do you see cars with asian tops as like asian roof tops in our world cruising around? There’s much asian culture in everything here if you would just look at it🤣
@@onetom2222 no they didn’t, at least not aesthetically. But modernity and capitalism changed every culture including Asian countries. I did read a scathing article once of the show writers making the Avatar world more Western and noting a more American-centric view in the Legend of Korra. A fair critique. Taiwan, Hong Kong, modern Japan, South Korea etc… all modernized and industrialized in ways similar to the Western nations. Season 2 while the lamest one story wise, does dive into the consequences of cultural shifts due to modernity and lost of traditions. But I never thought it impossible to modernize and not lose your culture, or if anything cultures change with the times. Japan is perhaps a successful story of modernizing without imperialist Western influence or control. They did it isolated for many generations.
Being able to organically create electricity etc - I'm curious how that effects climate change vs irl
"Ever since you were a little girl you've excelled at the physical side of bending but completely IGNORED the spiritual side." That White Lotus dude basically gives you the premise of the show.
Season 3 Korra is probably her at her best in terms of being aligned spiritually and physically.
Lotta people hated on this when it dropped, but damn Tenzin with his fam and Korra along with her fam and friends was everything i wanted along with wicked good animation quality and choreo.
yee, to be honest season 2 is the only purely bad season to me, all the rest are great
It will always live in the shadow of ATLA. Korra's writing is atrocious many a timed
Not really people liked season 1 it's season 2 and 3 were bad.
They should've made Amon the big bad guy or at least the main anti hero. He has a point , he could've stayed a little longer him and his group could've had more.
Especially what happened in season 3 and 4. They could've made people more sympathetic to his cause. Non benders always gets in the Cross fire. Amon should've been this presence that always feared Korra and basically the consequences of her and season villains actions. That made non benders take the side of Amon.

So glad you're jumping into Korra. Can't wait to see you react to the series.
First reactors I’ve seen start referencing the terrifyingly awkward era of mid-90s swing revival bands.
Which makes me almost masochistically wish there was an Avatar series set in a mid-90s-esq era with a soundtrack of swing revival, ska-punk, post-grunge, adult-alternative, and nu-metal. Just to see the madness of it all.
Grinned like an idiot at the mention of Squirrel Nut Zippers. I will lose it if I hear mention of Mephiskapheles.

Understandable
I can’t believe Toph “Let’s Break Some Rules!” Beifong became a cop
Water tribe is based off of Inuit culture and Indigenous natives of Siberia so there’s a strong sense of tradition. Republic city came about in the comics dealing with fire nation colonizers/civilians living in Earth Kingdom territory… You guys would probably really like that comic too :)
Hope you all have a great time with Korra. It's a show that means the world to me, I think it's wonderful.
Only piece of advice I'll give is this- Don't have the headspace that this is Airbender Book 4. You'll do both Korra and yourself a disservice.
They are very different shows, with different storytelling structures and play with very different ideas.
Keep that in mind, and you'll likely have a solid time and be able to see the show's merits for what they are, rather than in the shadow of something else.
Legend of Korra has a very special place in my heart, i'm sure you guys will love it.

So at four years old, Korra only knows three of the elements. She doesn't know Air, which is why she wants to complete training with Tenzin.
And if you're wondering about how they got skybison: Following the war, Aang found a surviving herd of skybison and winged lemurs (subspecies different from the Southern Air Temple varieties of Momo and Appa that he had) and domesticated them/breed . A remote Fire Nation tribe also raised skybison since the war as well
Idk if this is a spoiler or not,

"Do they have polio? what's goin on?" BAHAHAHAHA Morgan is the best lol.
I love you and your conversations and jokes guys, but you seem to miss certain details while talking to each other. It was stated that Aang tasked the White Lotus with keeping Korra safe and protected. There are larger cities in the South, it was mostly restored after the war, but Korra lived most of her life in a very small and secure compound with a few buildings and the training area. She's never been to a large city, doesn't know how traffic works, doesn't have any money because basic things were provided for her by the White Lotus. She also knows Tenzin pretty well and his kids love her, which is shown in the episode.
Also the dog - Naga - is a girl.

22:00 Even in the United States it took a while for many rural areas to have electricity. 1936 was the first time there was a concerted effort to completely electrify the countryside. The culture shock makes complete sense.
Never ceases to amaze me just how much you guys accurately predict so far ahead of time. Loving that tank top! I need it lol.
The Industrial Revolution happened during the 100 Years War with the Fire Nation. So all they have to do spread the knowledge
The music in this show is stunningggg
It's the best part 😂😂
The technology aspect shows the two most separated societies in the avatar world. The southern water tribe is the most cut off and least technological areas, even compared to their sister northern tribe. Republic city is one of the most technological, if not the most, technological area in the world. It's the center boiling pot and crossroads to every nation. That's why you guys spotted such a huge difference in technology
I love how you guys balance comedy with genuine enjoyment!
Thank you so much
Not the Kandy Muse reference😭😂 Oh my god seeing you react to Drag Race would be wiiiiild😂😂
in The Last Airbender there are ironclad ships, ballons, and a lot of technology from the second half of the 18xx. Since Korra is set some 70 years later, it's natural that we see technology from the early 19xx.

I have a lot of . . . creative differences with Korra but I'm here for you guys
One thing I really liked about this sequel is how they really expanded and diversified the cast into pretty much all age groups instead of just focusing on a single age group like the original where all main characters and most of their recurring supporting cast except Iroh and Katara/Sokka's dad were pre-teens or teens. Here you have children (Tenzin's kids), teenagers (Korra and her friends), adults (the grown-up children of the original main cast and their peers) and older people (like Katara and her peers), and eventually they even introduce some characters that fall between those age groups being, for example, older than Tenzin's kids but younger than Korra or older than Korra but younger than Tenzin and Chief Beifong. It allows for the possibility of a lot of different p.o.v.'s and tones. And Season 3 has the best villains in the whole franchise, so yeah. This show is nowhere near as bad as some people claim. I guess some people just couldn't deal with the fact that it wasn't exactly what they wanted or expected, and that it wasn't as good as the original. Then again, what is? I watched both of them long after they had aired and I was already pretty far away from my younger years, so I had zero nostalgia about them, and I can honestly say that I loved both equally, though I admit that the original series is a bit better, though most of that is for reasons that have to do with what was happening behind the scenes when they were making it.
the show is less about korra learning the elements (obviously) and more about her learning to become a better person i guess
also they didnt think theyd get more than one season so thats why she already knew most of the elements so that the season could be her learning the last one
Aang was his own person learning to be an avatar.
Korra is an avatar learning to be her own person.
Probably didn't help that she got told as a kid she was the avatar and told about all the great things avatars do.
@@Realmfaker ye exactly - a lot of people hate korra but i loved her from the beginning and i loved how much she changed by the end
Show, can you tell us the story what happened with Zuko’s mom?
Sure thing, viewers! It’s called go read the fucking comic.
Tenzin and Pema are rebuilding the air nation all by themselves
Can't wait for them to reach Season 3!
It can be a bit jarring of a jump when going straight in from Last Avatar, but when you dive in with an open mind it's such a refreshing new take. Hope youse enjoy it!

If Appa got in a car crash. The car would die.
It was probably a blimp accident.
Atla had warships, airballoons, giant drills, jet skis, speedboats, tanks, trucks.
Of course lok will have cars.

Not only is the tech and the types of events and politics advanced by the amount of time that has passed, the storytelling went from young teen to older teen/young twenties. So, there are a few dimensions to get used to, but it's excellent.
@@Flome810 I don't separate them, personally. But I get that.
I can tell you from personal experience, being told about a truly big city or seeing it on TV is completely different from experiencing it for the first time. I grew up in rural Canada and the first time I lived in Toronto was utter culture shock.

Book 1 is my favorite for one reason: one word, hyphenated... *PRO-BENDING* !!!!
One of the issues with Korra is how the story progress between season. And to no fault to the creators of the show.
Originally Korra was suppose to be just one season, the end of season 1 was to be the end of korra. Then got renew for another season and they design the story to end at that season as well. Then got renewed for the last two seasons. So there is a bit of disconnect of story between season. While season 3 and 4 are the best in the series because they design the story to be a continuation in between the two seasons.
Sean and Drayfus', no one really had an issue w/ Korra season 1. It was Season 2 that divides the fan group. Also, the Korra seasons are shorter than the AtLA-22 per season. But, EVERYONE loves Season 3. Season 4 is divided also. But, personally, based on your comments during your Avatar Aang watch, you guys will probably enjoy Korra.
The intro is the four latest Avatars: kyoshi, roku, aang, korra.
So Republic City is actually where the first and oldest fire nation colony was, and the circumstances surrounding it are explored more in the comics but the synergy between Earth Bending and Fire Bending lead it to being one of the most technologically advanced places in the world and this was approximately at the time of the end of the first series where the comics start. Fast forward about 60 years and it's become Republic City, so it's kind of a notable exception technology-wise, not that there's no improvement elsewhere in the world but Republic city is notably advanced.
I'm glad you three started reacting to Legend of Korra. S1 may seem to start off slow, but it's necessary for the worldbuilding for Korra's time as the Avatar.
Katara & Aang had 3 children. You'll see Tenzin's siblings in S2.
I never found S1 to be slow, but even if I find it slow, its only the first half, everything after that is a banger
You guys will see more of the Southern Water tribe in season 2. The place were Korra was training is a compound outside of the city
YESSSSSS😝 IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE🤗
I absolutely love when they take an established high fantasy setting and advance the technology level so you get wizards driving around in cars or peasants rising up with technology to equal the playing field against the mage collective.
omg, there is sooooo much from Korra i cant wait for you 3 to see, ATLA is sooo good and memorable, but imo Korra has something different to add.
I'm so glad someone knows about that documentary. It has some very interesting parallels in this show!
They actually don't really get into explaining the technology change between the city and places like the Avatar's compound at the South Pole. The creators have explained it by comparing it to the reality where people living in big cities that have incorporated and are designed around emergent technologies are almost like living in the future compared to people who live out in very rural areas. For example, there are still a lot of places in our world where running water is considered a luxury, to say much less of internet access and mobile phones etc.
the reason why republic city is so much more advanced than most other places is that it was created as a hotspot for the smartest people (and as you can already see from the triads) from all different nations, bringing together the technology and exploding it to new heights while the rest of the world only slowly benefits from the new stuff. There just isn't much fire and metal in the artic
you need to see how important metalbending is to industries, lightning bending to electricity and sokkas and other engineers genius war inventions could be used to further down their technologies
All nations had great strengths on their own but they were disconnected and now bringing them all together with this full on industrial revolution is a massive jump even more extreme than irl.
super excited for more episodes, especially season 3 and 4 once you got past some of the low points in season 2
I know this is an older video, but fun fact, when Aang and Katara showed affection towards each other in ATLA, sokka would say it gives him the oogies, so tenzin named his bison after the his parents love

The Southern Water Tribe has progressed a lot and does have electricity and modern culture, but you don’t see it until season 2. Although, in Season 1, in the very first shot of the White Lotus approaching Korra’s home, you do get to see the Southern Water Tribe capital in the background with electric power lights.
I’m finally part of the Patreon class for Korra but I look forward to these edits lmao. But Republic City is fun because it’s like an early 20th century city state most similar to Chicago or New York. But also if you think about the rest of the US in the 1910s and 1920s, it wasn’t nearly as advanced so the other nations are probably more traditional while republic city is probably where the movers and shakers relocated to.

One of the things I like most about ATLOK is the fact it's very different to ATLA. They coulda rested on their laurels and pumped out a derivative story, but the didn't.
