I’m a molder operator and anytime I walk into a house the first thing I look at is all the wood trimming

I love the old big crown and baseboard mouldings. Now, with the shorter ceilings, we have narrow less ornate mouldings. Some things from the past should be carried forward into the future.

In Canada today, all you see are cardboard houses to the horizon on the new developments; even the McMansions are floor to ceiling pressboard, chipboard, and actual cardboard. Yet the average home price where I live (central Southern Ontario) has gone from $250,000 to $900,000 in ten years. This is a deliberate destruction of value in the name of "productivity and efficiency' but you will never see a robot build anything that is true quality or craftmanship. Millennials are the most dumbed-down, ignorant set of spoiled brats the world has ever seen.

I recently got a quote to do custom profiles in Australia and I was surprised how inexpensive it was.

My house was built in 1919 and I need to replace trim but I can't find the right profile. I was quoted a price of over $400 just for them to make a cutter for their shaper to match my trim. Then over $200 for the two 10 foot pieces of wood that I would get. I could make do with something that is new with similar shape and some modifications but it would still not match. so I'm going to have to make a piece of it myself.

Would you cut a limited run custom moulding for a customer? I have a profile and I need 80 LF of this offset panel moulding. I have been trying to figure out how I can cut this design with router bits and a router table.

What he doesn't say is it is cost prohibitive for small runs. The setup cost, especially with new knives will be typically hundreds of dollars. If that has to be absorbed into only 20lf it is expensive per foot. The cost becomes reasonable when you have a whole house of trim to install. The challenge then is custom matching small pieces to an existing home. Often I can use a combination of router and table saw (can cut coves on a table saw) and break a larger molding down into a compound one. Some ogees etc are tricky to replicate though, as many classic shapes are not exactly available via router bits.

I have a Victorian home build ealy 1900s. I need one 8 foot piece. Noone I could find. What would this cost me? And how do I send you a piece? For a cost?
