- How to Crochet a Granny Stripe Shawl - worked from the bottom up! No turning a corner, just straight back and forth granny stripe rows which makes for a great little variation on the more traditional triangle motif shape shawl!
This shawl would look fab with some big fat tassels or pom poms on the ends (definitely something I am going to add once my personal shawl is big enough!)
WRITTEN PATTERN AND YARN DETAILS 👇
🧶 Yarn Information:
Thumbnail image and WIP shawl shown in intro uses a 4.5mm hook and Cygnet Boho Spirit in colourway "Festival" (available to buy here: bit.ly/2PixYQ2 )

🔥 Frequently Asked Questions:
Do you have a left handed version of this video? If you are left handed, you can convert ANY video on RUclips yourself! Simply go to www.mirrorthevideo.com/ and follow the instructions to mirror flip any video to convert to left handed!
How much yarn will I need? This is a very tricky question to answer as there are so many variables! How much yarn you need will depend on which yarn you choose, the thickness of that yarn, your tension and how large you want your finished project to be. I suggest making a small sample first so you can gauge how much yarn you'll need. If making a crochet square, you can weigh your finished square to work out how much yarn it used!
How many squares do I need for a blanket? That all depends on the size of the square you are making and how big you want your finished blanket to be! I always advise making one square first then measuring the size of it. From there you can work out how many squares you will need to get the blanket size you want 😀
Do you have the written pattern? Yes! I have written patterns to accompany my video tutorials on my website here: www.hookedbyrobin.com The written pattern is generally released a week or so after the video tutorial to ensure there are no errors in the video itself and to make amendments in the written version if any are found. All the written patterns are FREE to access on my website
How can I print the pattern from your website? Do you have downloadable PDF's? Not at this time no. This may change in the future but for now, I only provide the written pattern directly on my website.
Can you remake this video so it is slower? If the video speed is too fast, you can slow it down! 😀 See this video on exactly how: • How to Adjust the Spee...
Why do you use American stitch terminology? I learnt using USA stitch terms, long before I even knew there was a difference between UK & US terminology! American terms are my "first language" so to speak. If you need a conversion chart, I have one here! www.hookedbyrobin.com/crochet...

This is a very user friendly pattern. I’ve been crocheting for 58 years, but just recently I’ve begun to crochet shawls. This pattern is going to be a great help in my future shawl endeavors! Thank You!

Thx you, finally as a beginner I can
Crochet a Beautiful Shawl
Robin, once again you have given me exactly what I was looking for. Most of my crochet work is done for charities including prayer shawls. I needed a good triangle shawl pattern so they can be used for those folks who are in wheelchairs; a rectangular shawl is far too bulky. Thanks so much for a clear and concise pattern that will allow me to reach another segment of the population. 🤗🥰
That’s so nice to read, thank you so much for sharing Barbara.🥰🧶
I made this shawl for my friend. She loved it.
I have been wanting to make a shawl, but thought they were a little difficult. Not this one. It is so easy and beautiful. One thing I must tell you though. My work was kind of pulling so I thought I’ll chain in between the 3 double crochets. DONT DO IT GIRLS!!!! It started to curve out and down. I should have known Robins instructions were spot on. You are the best Robin.
Ah no Debbie! 🤗 Least you know for next time, if you make another shawl. Thank you for your kind words too.🥰🤗
@@HookedbyRobin luckily I discovered it early on and I ripped it out. I have crocheted for 50 years, but I haven’t made anything recently. I saw your channel and started watching you and you inspired me to take it up again. You really do have a gift for teaching. Thank you so much for sharing with us.
That is so lovely to read Debbie, I’m glad my videos inspired you to get back to it.😃
I love your videos working on 2 shawls bottom up. They are turning out very nice thanks to you.
Thank you Pattie, I’m glad they are going well.😃🧶
Crocheting is so much easier than I first thought it would be!
Thanks, Robin, your tutorials are so concise, but clear. Now I need to go do some serious yarn shopping...
Yarn shopping is the BEST bit about crocheting 🤣🧶 it might even be an entirely separate hobby judging by how much yarn I have LOL!
This is going to be what I make my husband's grandmother for Christmas, poor dear is always cold. And this chunky yarn is so nice and cozy.
Aww 🥰 kitty approves! Super easy and quick wold make a cute gift 💝
Thank you so much for this beautiful and easy project, I just finished my first ever shawl. 💛🧡💛
You’re so welcome Carol!😃
This is so relaxing to do. Have made several prayer shawls previously but I really do like this pattern. ❤😊
That’s lovely to read, thank you!😃

It is a lovely one to make Cheryl.😃🧶
I like this bottom up shawl,it eliminates the usual corners.I will definitely try this.Thanks.
Please don't stop showing us it helps me Letty from Tampa Florida.
Love it! I’m using all my small scraps and it turns out beautifully and grows so fast. There’ll be a ton of tails to weave in, but it will definitely be worth it.
Also I’d like to say, that I really love your tutorials. Your channel is the first I come to when I’m looking for something I’d like to crochet.
Thank you so much Sandra, I’m glad you are enjoying making it.😃🤗
Nice to see someone holding the yarn the same as I do. So many seem to have the first finger in the air, while holding the crochet between thumb and second finger, which does my poor thumb no good at all. Was a bit puzzled with the double crochet term, but realised you are using the USA terms. Will definitely be having a go at one of these shawls for the dementia unit at a local hospital. Many thanks.
I can't do the finger in the air thing either! It is so uncomfortable and aggravates my arthritis - it's amazing how many people also hold the yarn like we do, I always thought I was the only one haha!
Oh and yes, USA terms so UK Trebles 👍
Love this granny shawl pattern . To do it from bottom up is a great idea . Thanks for sharing .
Really you taught very easy , thank you so much mam.
I am glad you like it Mukta, thank you! 🤗
Love you!!!! Following you made it so simple! Great teacher
Glad to have found this pattern again. So easy and fast. Great for beginners and experienced crocheting.
Thank you so much Mike, I’m glad you like it.😃🧶
I have been looking for a shawl pattern to fit my skill set. You make this look easy enough for a novice crocheter. It looks like something I can do and seems to work up so fast. Thank you for sharing!❤️

My next project sorted! I am in UK, but have learnt crochet via USA tutorials, so thanks for doing this as I find USA terms easier to understand 🧣👍🏾❤️❤️
Nice shawl
Thank you! I was having a hard time finding a pattern. I crochet when I'm anxious so this helps a lot! I wanted to support with a hopefully algorithm boosting comment 🎉
Thank you so much, that’s so kind and appreciated.🥰🤗
I'm gonna try making a head scarf with this pattern too. I usually put a button at the bottom to hold it on my head. Works great. And I do that with my shawls Midway to hold the shawl on
Love that idea!😃 Thank you for sharing.x
I live this pattern I am actually working a traditional granny shawl when I found this. If I wasnt already 3/4 done the shawl I would do it this one!
Hi Robin beautiful shawl ,amazing colour , and Steve is adorable 😻.. 😊Amanda xx💕
She has her moments! She was being too cute for once rather than just plain hollering in the background 😂
I'm doing this triangle shawl right now n I'm loving it..😍🥰 love your work very much.
Yay! Thank you so much.🥰🧶
Understanding u is wonderful as well as your teaching. It's wonderful to know there's no right or wrong size as well thanks so much. It feels so good to know a new way to do a shawl
I am glad it helps, will you be making one? 😃🧶
Just made one!! Loved it! Thanks Blue! Hi Steve! ❤️

I love a bottom up anything lol... bottom up beanies, shawls, the lot! Am doing this one in a Unicorn colour Shawl in a Ball... will see how that turns out and post on your page. Thanks for the great (and entertaining lol) tutorials ;) Greets from Oz.
I love this as I enjoy easy crochet projects.
I am glad you enjoyed it Danielle!😀
I’m going to try this. Thank you.
Terrific way to crochet a shawl! Thank You and God Bless you and your family. I will be using this technique for quite a few more shawls.
I am currently in the process of making this. Thank you for such clear and easy to follow instructions.
Hello Robin. I have finished one shawl using your pattern - I am very pleased with the results! Your instructions were clear and concise. My niece loves her shawl. I am left-handed and was able to use your video and pattern to make sure I was reversing correctly. I am just beginning my journey with crocheting, and am thoroughly enjoying experimenting with different yarns, stitches and hooks. I have been a knitter for many years, and wanted to try another way to work with yarn. Thank you for having your videos so accessible. Look forward to trying out more of your tutorials.
If you go to www.mirrorthevideo.com you can convert any crochet video to be left handed! It mirror flips it for you 😀 I hope that helps! X
Thank you so much for making this easy for a beginner. I searched and searched for a shawl that I could make for my 8 year old grand daughter.
Love it. Gonna make it for sure .

Hi Sweet Robin! I broke my foot June 10th and I'm gathering up quick & easy projects! I have 6 weeks to get way ahead on Christmas gifts☺️! But, I'm going to make myself this shawl (I'll be using Caron Jumbo yarn, as I hadn't found a pattern, Until Now!, as I LOVE how there aren't large ch 1 gaps❣️ Here in Florida, it's scorching Hot already, so I'm going to pretend it's Winter inside with the Air Conditioner blasting😂❤️ Thanks Very Much hugs, take care!

Thank you I am starting one tomorrow. Time for bed now. I will let you know how it works. Thanks again.
Love the granny shawl.
Definitely going to try it out. Thanks.
You’re welcome Sandra, I hope you enjoy it! 😃
So easy I like it better than starting from the top and you can tell how big it is going to be, I'm making three for three little girls I'm just three different colours easy to do in front of the TV
I used this video to help me come up with ideas for a poncho that I am working on. I made two beautiful motif squares and I had no idea where I wanted to go from there. This video was so helpful as I am using this in a "join as you go" method to make two triangular panels attached to either side of the squares. I cannot wait to finish it!!
I will definitely try this project to wear for the holidays.
U do a fantastic job teaching your chrochet
Thank you so much!😃
Thank you for sharing it looks very simple to make I’m going to try it thanks again😃😃😃😃
I'm defnitaly going to be making me a few of these in different sizes of yarn weight. I love granny anything and this is the first time I have seen a straight granny shawl.
So simple, but a great idea. I've never thought of doing it that way. Looks lovely, thank you xxx

Making it right now and loving the process!!
I love this, so straightforward. Somewhere in my leftovers I have some lightweight DK that should make a nice summer evening shawl. Love your kitty.
😸
I LOVE this pattern! I think I will start this project next. Thank you Robin! ❤️
Thanks for this pattern! I have some special variegated yarn that I just couldn’t make work. Tried three stitch combinations + other plain stitches and was unhappy with all of it. Tried this, and boom! Finally, something that will show off the yarn and also has the beauty of being easy to work. Yay for Robin!
Woohoo, that’s great news Fiona!😃 I do love variegated yarn, enjoy your shawl.🧶
Beautiful, like all your other works. Next on my project list.
Thank you so much Kathy!😃
