- It's been a long, long time - so let's rejoice at a brand new Caddy's Retrospective! Looking back, does Sly Raccoon hold any kind of candle to the days when it helped the PS2 dominate console gaming? All that, and more, shall be answered in this video. I hope.

I haven't fully played Sly Cooper for myself, but I'll let you know if 15:30 will apply to me at some point. :)
I'm still waiting for you two to make a collab together. That would be awesome!
John John! It's you! Woooo!!!!
hey you got my tweet well either mine or someone elses lol
I was a bit confused when I saw that clip. lol Didn't expect to see one of your clips in a Caddy review. (Or retrospective)
Johnny in the house
I will never forget the annoyance and pain I got when I owned my own games and you had to be the first to play it and have the first save file belong to you because "You were the oldest"... ALL I EVER WANTED IN LIFE WAS TO HAVE SAVE FILE NUMBER ONE AND YOU WOULD NEVER LET ME HAVE IT! YOU'RE LITERALLY THE WORST PERSON EVER!
Professor Juice you should have saved over the save file.
Similar, but not as rooted. It is kinda nice that I can have the top file now.
@@vpajuluomaI'm late, but he can just as easily just do the same thing back. XD
I always got the impression that Sly Cooper sooo wanted to be picked up and turned into a cartoon series. Just the whole premise. But it was probably 10 years too late to enjoy such a thing.
zan2011 I've never played sly cooper, but I will.
TAFM017 I'm alright with Being able to see through Bentley's glasses. I'm alright with whatever they did with Murray. But, for the love of God, WHY DID THEY HAVE TO CHANGE SLY'S VOICE ACTOR?!!!
Adrian Delmach yeah, 'ts a bit creepy, to be honest
***** if they are doing it now you know it will be really good last 1 season then get cancelled because it wasn't a ben 10 knock off
The quality of Sly Raccoon's developers is InFamous.
Badumtss.
Sly Cooper is one of the best game series out there, in my opinion. I replay those games, ALL OF THEM, at LEAST once every two years.
No, Caddy, you were NOT the only one who hated the driving segments. I was SO glad when I finished them...
Same here.
DITTO!!!
Since those minigames, my life has never known peace. Snakes have started manifesting in my home physically.
Yo
TheHeroOfTomorrow dude I’m still stuck on the those as are my sister...
Sly is love sly is life
sly is bae m8
Pershons Place Sly is a gr8 vidya gam character. :^]
NO MORE! I swear it. I haven't seen a fucking Shrek comment in a while. Why do you have to keep it alive?
Binkus Barnes Because I love Sly Cooper
ball is life
Nice SomecallmeJohnny reference there, Caddy. XD Can't wait to see the following retrospectives.
Wasn't expecting you to be here
Does anyone know if Caddy has played the original Ratchet & Clank trilogy? I can't be the only one who wants to hear Caddy talk about those.
Yes! I found someone who talks about that game! What year is it boy I don't even know if that game is relevant! I can't find any interesting let's plays, reviews or general online Info about the games! God save us all the era of Matthew ranger talking to someone about rachet and clank is upon us! Rejoice
Matthew Ranger
There's apparently a Ratchet and Clank re-imagining planned for the PS4, though don't quote me on that.
***** yeah I heard about that. Apparently its gonna use a tweaked rachet and clank nexus engine and have 40+ weps and a map builder. Also its gonna have 30 campaign maps aswell and cost about £60 so I think I might pre-order it. The series seems to have been majorely setback by the amount of fans lost during all 4 one and the defends on thus a budget cut so they might not be able to pull this off
Matthew Ranger I hope they keep the emotion the first 3 games had, Like how Ratchet would stretch with a long jump, his Omniwrench would stretch while hitting and how he bounces with his movement. Because the first 3 games still stand up today, I've played them on the Vita and I'm surprised they still look good for a PS2 game that came in around 2002
We absolutely need a Ratchet and Clank retrospective
Hey Caddy I absolutely LOVE that you're doing a series on Sly Cooper because no one ever really talks about it, and the Sly Cooper series, along with Ratchet & Clank, and Jak & Daxter, were literally my favorite games growing up but no one talks about any of them. Anyway, I'm looking forward to parts 2 and 3, keep up the good work! :)
Fun fact: caddy has the amount of subs as the population of iceland, even a bit more
Let's take over Iceland
YAY
Extreme Yoshi!!! PM me when you all planing on doing it :)
***** WERE DOING IT RIGHT NOW!! Stop watching the video, a revolution is beginning!
grimesylad ok... Whatever your into I guess?!
"Cooper" is a curse word in England? Huh. So, I guess Alice Cooper was even more controversial in England than in the US.
As far as I'm aware, Caddy was just joking on that part because he couldn't think of a legitimate reason as to why it was renamed here. Or, at least, I've never heard it be used as a curse. And I've lived in England all my life.
Arran Kirby
Now I feel like an idiot.
Having looked it up in the dictionary, apparently "cooper" means someone who makes and repairs barrels.
You think Alice Cooper is bad; by that logic "The Big Bang Theory" would have stirred up European controversy as well.
JamesDavy2009
There's the answer to why the name was changed then! The localizing team mustn't of wanted people to think the game was about a Sly Barrel Maker!
Hey said on his Twitter that he made up "Cooper" being a curse.
15:29 Holy crap, Caddy watches SomecallmeJohnny.
Remember when Johnny corrected himself on the checkpoint crates in Crash 1? He mentions Caddy was the one to tell him. =D
UltimaKeyMaster Oh wow, I did not realise that.
Riddy Prower It should be at the beginning of the Crash 2 video.
UltimaKeyMaster OK, I'll look it up.
Conner Martin So I am correct.
One of my favourite RUclipsrs covering one of my favourite videogame series of all time. I'm so freaking happy!
Whoo! Another retrospective!
It's been too long, and while I was kinda expecting something like Ape Escape or Jak and Daxter, this is even more awesome.
Also. You made a SomecallmeJohnny reference. YOU BRILLIANT MAN YOU.
What? When? i watch jhonny as well and i didnt notice D:
The Somecallmejohnny reference was at 15:29, for those of you who want to know...
Tadaboody the clip where he says that the driving minigames can, and I quote: FUCK RIGHT OFF!!!
Jak and Daxter would've been better...
Abbas Zaffar khan Segaman55 Thanks :D
God I still remember the day this video came out. I was in summer vacation at the time and was about to go on a trip with my dad to Argentina so I watched this video before we hit the road. I remember being so excited to watch the rest of this series; those were the good times
Love the game, but agreed, I HATE THE DRIVING PARTS.
You had me at the music for this video!
I don't care what everyone else says, this here is my all time favorite platformer game of ALL TIME! and caddy here explained every reason why.
Sly Cooper is a racoon. Bradley Cooper played rocket racoon.
Bradley Cooper is Sly Cooper. Illuminati confirmed.
YES, I absolutely agree Caddy. The driving segments were always the bane of my existence when ever I played this game.
The driving parts actually made me cry in my youth. They were fucking impossible.
Yeah man, I remember my buddy's dad actually came in to beat that part for us.
Jason Roof I was probably the only one who thought the racing levels were fun and easy. ;_;
Easily the hardest sections of Sly 1
The button prompt swamp mini game and the driving sections are the bane of my existence
What an underrated series...
Underrated? How was Sly underrated? :D
KingOfBlades27 In regards to the original trilogy, everyone usually just sees the games as a good games, but not many people realize how well done the art style is and the attention to detail throughout the games. The games have such a clear artistic vision and great talent behind the them that if it had come out today, it would blow most modern games out of the water.
SigmaShawn Yeah I agree with you :)
One of my favorite game series of all time.
I never knew Cooper was a swear word in the UK
But I love how Caddy is covering these games. I look forward to seeing the other 2 videos
Iv never heard it used in that way here in the UK to be honest, I suspect that it may be other European countries but I'm not sure
He said in Europe. Not the UK. You do realise that the UK isn't all of Europe don't you?
Never played any of these games, but just watching the footage is extremely satisfying in regards to "game-feel" -- it looks like it controls like butter, which is pretty rare for old platformers.
So wait… What about real people with the name "Cooper"?
Philo Wintercoat
Poor Bradley...
I absolutely love this game and all I have to say is THANK YOU for not criticizing this game for not being stealthy enough. As you said, that's clearly not the focus and I don't think a lot of people see that.
I thought it was going to the Spyro retrospective.
1 million sub special. Only you guys can make it happen!
But I can't subscribe to you more than once...
***** more than one account
Kill la Kill
What about Jak and Daxter and Ratchet and clank. oh yeah if you want him to do spyro sooner than later just make like 7000 gmail accounts.
this was the first video game that I ever played. Thank you for being a good RUclipsr that chose to talk about it. I appreciate that.
Caddy is one of the best youtubers ever. Dont like if you agree. Im not annoying twat begging for likes. But yeah hes amazing.
...(likes anyway)
I agree with you so I liked anyway
I remember Sly Cooper, playing it in my younger days, i loved that game as a kid, and i feel that the game still holds up to this day. Such a great series.
I'd quite like a Destroy All Humans retrospective, covering the interesting concept of 1, the perfection of the idea that came in 2, and it's horrific fall in 3.
But then 4 came out, and resurrected the gameplay of 2's again. But nevertheless, DAH is an amazing franchise, apart from the stumbling of the third game. I'd love to hear if Caddy's played them :)
Really? I thought 3th game was amazing. Hard to say which one do I like more, 2 or 3 but those are my absolutely favorites. 4 is just...as a gameplay it's great as well, but as story and character development it shits all over the place.
Jenni Välimäki Personally, my list for my perceived quality is 2 being the best, then 4, then 1, then 3.
3 brought in a lot of awesome concepts; I thought stuff like the secret zombie weapon was amazing. However, Big Willy felt mindless to control in comparison to the UFO, the environments felt smaller, and it marked the point where the game lost it's B-movie atmosphere, for better or worse.
The main reason I love 4, however, was that it revived many features from 2. For example, the Discolator (One of my favorite weapons from any videogame, period), the insane boss battles and general premise (For example, 2 had you fight James Bond and Godzilla. 4 has you fight a giant cyborg chinese dragon for no logical reason, or an alien Kraken), and the solid gameplay.
3 just wasn't as awesome as the others in the gameplay department. I still give it props for numerous features and certain story details, though, but compared to the others, I found it lacking. However, 4's main issue is that it failed to deliver on open-world local multiplayer, which is why I place it below 2. I miss the days of running around on max alert levels with a pal, using only the Discolator to ward off tanks :)
DarthVaderReviews If only Path of the Furon wasn't so buggy and crashed alot, I'd be more inclined to play it more often. And the difficulty factor took a nose dive.
Hotsex spy Yeah, the difficulty had a lotta exploits. I literally beat the final boss in around 7 seconds via instant time freeze and firing all my ion grenades at once :)
what he said about the driving segments is spot on. they were the bane of my plat run on this game
5:00 - Oh my fucking God did I see footage of a real raccoon swiping a carpet? That little piece of dog shit!
Yeah, he was a sly motherfucker, huh?
I'm so happy Caddy did a retrospective of this series. It doesn't get enough attention that it deserves. I don't hear anyone talk about this series at all! Thanks, Caddy! :D
Caddicarus Caddi, Please review Ape escape 1 AKA the best platformer ever made!
not best platformer, the best GAME ever made
Oh hey, aren't you that guy that hates anything western?
Clinton M "Hate" is a strong word, More like "uninterested".. After all, I'm here on western channels interacting with my western friends, Right?
GMBalHajri1990 Good point
>Still waiting for Ape Escape 4 for the PS4 *cries* or perhaps it may never happen ever *cries harder*
At this point, they may as well give the franchise to Nintendo. I feel like Playstation is already far from being a platform that gives out 'kiddies' games anymore. I mean, yeah, they are still trying, with Sly Cooper 4 or Tearaway. But judging from the exclusives that they gave out for the PS4, it's all typical games with fancy/realistic and less stylized graphics. I feel like classic platformer games with more memorable/stylized visuals have little place for comfort now.
sly 1 was my first ps2 game and i have loads of great memories with the series. I definitely need to go back through and replay them.
I hope he does a Jak & Daxter Retrospective soon. Like this comment if you agree... or don't whatever.
I'm sorry.... But jak and daxter was the only good one. Jak 2 , 3 and the lost frontier are shit.
how?
+Nobody Gibs I can only speak for Jak and Daxter 2, but the driving basically ruined the game and everything blew ass, the collectables were useless and everything was too different and messed up.
Joshua Mann I love every one of them except the lost frontier, that includes Jak X.
Hey Caddy, fun little factoid. The staff weapon used by Sly is called a Crook and was actually related to thieves of olden days. Primarily a peasants defensive weapon used by farmers(most notably shepherds) it would be used to fend of wild animals but in the hands of a thief they would be used to trip victims and secretly steal items with its curved end(think picking up a purse by the handles). It was a fun little touch to the game I always found amusing, but I'm also easily amused. Can't wait to see the rest of your retrospective, I loved this series for it's art style and pitch perfect game play.
Can you do Ratchet and Clank trilogy?
YES
Hopefully he slides in Ratchet Deadlocked as well.
Yes that would be awesome
Clockwork was and still is badass. The fact that he stayed alive through centuries from anger and hatred alone is cool enough, but considering I BELIEVE he actually stayed alive because of that is PERFECT.
Did Caddy just use a clip from Somecallmejhonny? Or am i just going crazy.
Yep. Caddy had helped Johnny out with a tidbit regarding Crash 1, so sneaking him in there was probably a nice nod to him in return.
Wow, exactly 6 years. I just decided to watch this randomly today, not even realizing what day it was uploaded.
That's not a curse, that's a swear. A curse is literally a curse, like "Damn it to Hell" Cooper isn't related to a belief system, so it's a swear, not a curse.
marcusesepisode You must be fun at party's
Nuka Cola I'm fun at costume parties. No one knows who I am so people don't hate me. c:
marcusesepisode Cooper is neither, since Caddy made it up.
I'm glad I played them in order. Sly 1 is a great game and gets overlooked thanks to its sequels. The level design and art direction was ahead of its time.
you're not alone caddy, I hated the driving levels too
Maybe I'm a bit biased, But I absolutely LOVE all of the Sly games. Sly and the Thievious Raccoonus was actually the first game my dad ever let me have and I've enjoyed them ever since. I'm so glad to hear other people enjoyed them as much as I did.
God this game has much better graphics than sonic boom
That’s a very easy to do but at least that games level design was not as bad the game was......... well if you don’t use the knuckles glitch
@@Jordyn-Lee the level design is just very dull though is the thing from both an aesthetic point and a design point.
this is the best day ever! Since finding your channel and the caddy's retrospective series, i have been waiting/hoping you would cover one of my favourite game series of all time (that rarely gets discussed in games media) and there is nobody better for the job then you caddy. Now all we need is the spyro retrospective and all my dreams for your channel will have come true. Thanks so much for all the awesome and passionate content caddy and I look forward to seeing where you take the channel in the future.
I played the demo version which was in Ratchet and Clank 3 before I played assassin's creed and this game is more parcour sneak thing than assassin's creed 3 in my opinion.
*The demo was a demo of Sly cooper 2.
Sly Cooper is hands down my all time favorite game series of all time. my first videogame i've ever played was the Sly 1 demo when i was 4 years old. right now i own Sly 1, Sly 2, Sly 3, and Sly Cooper Thieves in Time on my PS2, PS3, and PS Vita and 100% completing every version. because you're making 3 episodes of Sly Cooper i'm going to subscribe (this is the first video i watched from you)
I've always liked Sly 2 more. Too much shit going on in Sly 3, I couldn't get into it.
The pirate level was a particularly odd addition, and I hope that the next Sly time-travel game has a pirate level, because it was pretty fun in 3, but the reason for it existing was stupid. A bunch of people just wanted to be pirates, so they just made a big LARP island?
nothin as cool as sly 2, dawg. Just how I see it.
Binkus Barnes maybe you should ACTUALLY PLAY THE FUCKING GAME before judging the best Sly game.
TheULTIMATE450 you're rightio. I haven't beaten 3.
***** I also loved the fact that you no longer needed to hunt for clue bottles, which became very tedious to hunt for in Sly 2.
I've been a caddy fan for a while and Sly Cooper is my favorite series so this has been a long time coming! Thanks caddy!
Wait wait... Sly Cooper is changed to Sly Raccoon because "Cooper" is a British slur, but Mini Cooper on the other hand is just fine? How does that logic work?
+Arexion5293 I'm having a hard time finding anything relating to the meaning of the word Cooper. Among British slurs, Cooper doesn't appear in a number of sources. I can't find an original article stating the name change stating that it was changed because of an offensive term, even though the name was indeed changed, nor can I find any meaning to the word cooper apart from:
a) Urban Dictionary: Someone that is highly sexy and charismatic (sounds like Sly :P). A positive label generally to men but women can have it to the same effect, or
b) Oxford Dictionary: a maker or repairer of casks and barrels.
So yeah, I'm calling BS on this, and assuming Caddy was being hyperbolic like his usual Caddy-self.
Xavier Ursua Your source?
4 friends from Europe and one in London
I mean, did they read it in a book that had that as a slang word? Did they watch a TV show and someone insulted them by saying they were a cooper? Was it in a play they saw? Is there any reference to any media apart from this show that it's actually a swear word?
If there is, I would like to hear it. I ask my friends who swear like sailors and they've never heard of the word.
Glad someone else made the Crash Bandicoot comparison with this game. The way the stages were set up in such a linear fashion really reminded me of Crash's stage design.
For someone who's never played a SC game, which would people say is the strongest of the series?
Well I think games 2 and 3 are the strongest. Maybe 3 the best. The 4 is nice too, but it kinda shits on you with fucked up character development, but as a gameplay it's strong too
For me personally, it would be 3. There are plenty of memorable moments for me in that game, I just love it.
Get 2, then 3, 1 if you liked both, 4 at the end.
Sly 2 greatly improved over the first one, and is considered the better one, great level design, vilains, missions, everything.
3 is kinda like 2, but slightly less "souled".Ya know, feels strange to play it when ya played both others.
1 is still a bit aged, so I recommend it last.
4 if you hate yourself.Seriously, fuck that shit, great production values ont mean much when they f*ed evrything about the story and characters.
Jenni Välimäki For me 2 is the best, because Sly 3 had way too many characters that had the same issues as Spyro 3, the first game was a nice experimentation, but Sly 2 is a blast from beginning to end.
Sly 4 is good too except the level design felt a bit forced mainly the Ice age level. And I never really cared for the other coopers either.
Hotsex spy I never had problem with the Sly 3 having a lot characters. It never bothered me since I liked all of them. But you're right. Sly 2 was a blast!
Sly 4 was okay in my book. I enjoyed playing it as well. But the story and character development was just...shit. Especially what they did to Penelope.
In the end I like sly 1 and 4 okay. But I LOVE sly 2 and 3. I don't think there is a bad sly game in the end.
This game series was my childhood, I will never get tired of these haha
**AIR HORNS**
Glad I wasn't the only one to remember this game, I feel no one talks about this game anymore!
If Cooper is a curse word in Europe, then why did they name the car the Mini Cooper..............oh wait
(insert lenny face here)
Caddicarus thank you so much for doing the Sly Cooper series for your never retrospective it holds a really special place in my heart and to all other gamers alike and I think I can speak for all of the viewers when I say I cannot wait for the next 2 parts :D
Cooper is a curseword in Europe...? Uhm, european here. Never heard of it as an curseword.
It was a joke
Noah Baldwin ... Didn't sound like a joke
Don't think it is a joke, but I haven't heard it either.
I think it's just trade marked by Mini
its a joke
This is one of your only series that I still watch. Love it
So... what does cooper mean?
I absolutely love these games. Honest to god some of my favorite games of all time.
yep,the driving minigames are awful in sly. and they only get worse in the later games
Sly 2 is one of the most solid games of all time, honestly.
plz do a ratchet and clank retrospective, I have grown up with it and its a pretty good game from 1 to 3, the rest are just shite
A few months late but dude, the ps3 ratchet and clank games are by far the best. Save for the 4 player one, that one is shit. But a crack in time and enter the nexus are pretty fuckin great. I have to agree on the rest of the ps2 games being horrible though.
Please, do all the RaC games!!! PS2, PS3, PS4
you hate the ps2 ratchet games
Can't believe I haven't seen your videos before. My childhood broken down. Love this stuff
This will, and always will be my favourite caddicarus episode
Just finished this game again for the third time right after beating sly 4. Just also realized how good the series is.
I always thought the variety in gameplay made it feel like one of those heist movies, where you jump from team member to team member, doing different parts of the job.
I've always felt that way about Sly and Crash Bandicoot. Good show.
CADDY! You fulfilled my dream that I was thinking about 1 year ago! Thank you SO much!
This fills me with gratuitous quantities of glee. Sly Cooper is everything good in this world.
the studio behind these masterpieces clearly inspiring the name of one of the greatest films of our generation.
holy shit almost forgot how much i love sly cooper
super glad to see you doing retrospectives again!! your explanation and opinions of games is always interesting to hear
I know this is well over a year old, but watching this gave me some good nostalgia vibes.
Also, for whatever reason, imagining Crash Bandicoot with a silly Scottish accent is achingly funny to me. Thanks for that, Caddy.
14:20 love the audio edit on the word charm. its just as well woven in with the rest of your voice as a basket with two holes in it
I loved the Sly Cooper series, especially 3. They were some of my PS2 gems. I never played the PS3 ones, but I heard good things. I'm excited for the rest of this retrospective. Keep up the good work!
Glad someone shares my thoughts about the driving sections! Hated everything about those frustrating messes of stages..
Holy crap this is freaky/awesome. Last night I was in the mood to watch a lotta sly cooper stuff for no reason at all and then just happened to swing by Caddy's page to find this!
OMG the Sly Cooper games!!!!! You have no idea how excited I am for your next reviews, Caddi!! Thank you!!!
Caddy thank you for introducing me to all these games in your retrospectives, I ended up buying a PS2 again and I've already bought MGS1-3, I plan on going through your retrospectives and slowly picking everything one by one.
Missed you Caddy! 2015 has been dull without ya.
Thanks Caddicarus!! I have never played Sly Cooper when I had my PS2, but I got the HD collection and love it!!! Keep up the good work! You are the best reviewer imo.
I just took myself in coming back to this video just to watch 15:28-15:30. So satisfactory!
I remember Sly 1 fondly. I also remember being terrified of the VooDoo crocodile lady's level. And her weird rhythm based boss fight.
I remember playing this game as a kid and having it be my favorite game of all time, but after I played the second, third and fourth one, find it hard to come back to this game.
Dude... love this one. Sly is one of my favorite Playstation exclusives. Best one since the Oddworld retrospective.
Sly Cooper is easily in my top 5 favorite series. I'm working on the Sly 2 platinum on Vita right now.
I can relate to this video, I had first played and seen the second game in the franchise, and wasn't until I got my hands on the HD remakes for the Vita and got Sly 3 for the PS2 that I saw them. I was surprised when I saw that the first game was a dedicated platformer, as I was used to the open world stealth games that were Sly 2 & 3!
It is so nice to see a new caddys retrospective.
Oh MY GOD YES! I've always wanted to see you tackle this series and now you're getting to it and aaaaaahhh! I'm sorry for being a fanboy about this, but I hope you enjoy your trek through my childhood favorite series.
This was one of the first games I played!!! My brother and I use to play together, when he died it was my turn, when I died it was his turn.
You have no idea how happy i got when i saw this video on my feed. I can't wait for the Sly 2 one
Caddy thank you so much for reviewing these games cause the second Sly game was one of the first games I've ever played so please keep the great work and I'll keep waiting for part 2
Nothing better than playing Sly Cooper and listening to some D.R.I.
Fantastic opening to the video. Done well in classic Caddy fashion.
