Nick Bullinger It actually doesn’t, it’s sadly non-canon and it takes place like... 7 whole years? after classic Metal Gear 1 & 2 in another universe iirc. It’s still a good story either way, in fact the ending wasn’t resolved and was teasing for a sequel.
@Nick Bullinger @@LarryButz it's a non-canon alternate scenario that takes place after Metal Gear 1, but retcons the events of Metal Gear 2 (The Zanzibar Land Disturbance). In 2002, 7 years after the original Outer Heaven Uprising and the destruction of the TX-55 Metal Gear, Snake is forced out of retirement by Campbell and placed on a mission in the central African country of Gindra, to infiltrate the fortress Galuade, rebuilt from the bombed-out skeleton of Outer Heaven. Snake's objective is to destroy a US-funded prototype Metal Gear, Metal Gear GANDER, which had been stolen by a rebel group called the Gindra Liberation Front (lead by Augustine Equabon) and is being defended by former US special forces unit turned terrorist cell, Black Chamber.
