I was at Pape's recital at the Met. in September, 2014. It was wonderful and at the end the crowd didn't want it to be over. When he ended his encores with this beautiful song from Camelot, we were very vocal in our approval! He is my favorite bass and a great singing actor.

I like this, Labienus and Sharky123. I love the arrangement, and the singing is appealing although I feel as if Rene is not always in the rhythm of the English words. I seem recall Robert Goulet singing this? Anyway, it reminds me of Ezio Pinza singing South Pacific.

Magnificient recital, but I could have done without this. It's rare that opera singers sound idiomatic in this music-and this in particular begs for a "show voice" Would have preferred you putting on the Mussorgsky-wouldn't mine hearing that again!

I disagree. The point is not to sound idiomatic in this music, it's to have a bit of fun with the audience (most clearly loving it) after a long, well thought out recital of difficult music.

sharky123 That is how you feel-that's fine-I have the opposite reaction-not my idea of fun-another maybe lighter Lieder would have been my choice..And if the point is not to sound idomatic in the music you're singing-what is the point? The fact that the audience-the same audience that interrupted the first Quilter song,( and it sounded like more than one) loved it doesn't change my mind-maybe they were really applauding for what had preceded it.
Any chance of some Mussorsky? I was driving, had no text?
Did look for some reaction on one of those idiot opera boards-could you believe only one person seemed to have listened to it!

That person may have been me (though I think one other person may have eventually written about it as well). Many of those boards like talking about the old days more than discussing anything happening today.

sharky123 Oh really!-well then good for you. I see today there was someone who was actually there. I mean it was a rare and exciting event (especially a bass recital) that I thought that board would have had many reactions.
No offense intended-there are some interesting contributors, too. Well,it depends how you talk about the old days.
