Rene Pape is amazing!!! This aria just had me sitting still for 5 minutes after it was over because I couldn't believe how wonderful it was. I've now listened to the entire opera of Don Carlo, but this aria still is the clincher, the highlight of the opera.
What beautiful writing for the bass voice! I swear, Verdi was a complete genius, and Pape is a worthy exponent of his music. What a heartbreaking video! Thank you, gabba02, for posting this.
i was lucky enough to see sam ramey do this live, but i was only about 12, and didn't really fully appreciate it. 7yrs pass, and i'd hardly heard the aria again, and then there's rene at the volpe gala. my word. i think i cried for about 10 minutes afterward, his singing was so beautiful.
¡¡¡Realmente De Los Grandes Y Con Mayusculas!!! ¡¡¡Bravissimo Pape!!!
do not so harshly assume my ignorance, sir! i've heard all of the above and i believe pape competes with them grandly. the emotion of this performance is absolutely fantastic. i could feel his sorrow through my speakers clearly!
Awesome performer, if you know this aria well, you can hear that he's really in the moment and on the inside of King Phillip. He does so many things so incredibly well
I was just watching the 2001 Tristan und Isolde telecast from the Met for the first time, and I kept thinking, "I bet he'd make a great Phillip in Don Carlo." And I was right! His tone reminds me a lot of Jose van Dam's...it's just gorgeous.
It is obvious that you have not heard Pape live. Before I listen him, I had had the same idea like you. I was shocked. To undersand these type of voices like him, Stefan Kocan, James Morris from recordings is nearly impossible. That is why opera is still an acoustic art. Btw, I have heard him live this year as Filippo II at Bavarian State Opera. He has got one of the biggest and darkest voices I have ever heard. If you have an opportunity, go and listen him live.
I have seen him live in this role and yes, it is fantastic! He gave us the best singing we have ever heard, I am quite convinced that no singer has ever done this role better (yes, I have heard about Siepi, Christoff etc.). Unfortunately, his brilliant singing was something that the major part of the audience reacted somehow indifferent to. Possibly because he is not a tenor, but it makes me wonder who really show up on such occations.
I believe this clip doesn't come from the staged opera, but rather from a gala concert. I saw him singing King Philip at the Met last year. He is one of the greatest actor/singer for sure.
An outstanding performance in its own right, and also one of the few good highlights from the Volpe gala. Too bad the orchestral introduction at the beginning is almost entirely lopped off - it sets the mood for what follows. Pape doesn't have the depth of voice for this role that Siepi or Christoff or Raimondi did (to say nothing of Plishka or Ghiaurov or Hines), but he certainly has a good voice for the part - and he does this aria justice!!! Thank you VERY much for posting this!
I agree for the most part with your assertions, (save for Raimondi - who I always fournd to have an uninspiring colorless sound) Pape is a wonderful singer, but the wound comes from the studio recording age. You forgot to mention Pinza as well! Hopefully an omission...
I heard him live in Parsifal at the MET. He has a very penetrating voice; not light at all. Recordings do wonders to medium and small voices but inaccurate with bigger voices.
Crikey, what a voice! Shame he's not a better performer. Someone needs to teach him how to act, if that's possible, then he'd be incredible. Here he's literally incredible, as in I don't believe he is King Felipe for a second.
@Juliet0307 M'y entendre veux-tu dire?Tu me parlerais alors bien plus gentiment. Salut!
I'm not sure if this Verdi opera is the one I best love or most hate. The human cost is considerable. King Iron Pants, during the day, has got good reason to cry in his sleep, and 10 minutes later, at the crack of dawn (!) the Inquisition is creeping into the bedroom to stick a match to the bleed! What will Father say?
Despite a wonderful voice he doesn't sound old or weary enough for the part. An old monarch who married his son's betrothed knowing how beloved the pair were to each other.
Well, I suppose you never heard Siepi, Christoff, Ghiaurov, Plishka, et al. Pape pales by comparison & could not shine their boots. After hearing those gentlemen, you're still "totally unconvinced", that's just unfortunate for you.
Superficial attempt at emotion that leaves me rather cold, like DFD's pale attempts at Verdi roles. You are rather thin-skinned, apparently, & cannot deal with a difference of opinion, so this "discussion" is finito!
I’ll take Rene every time for this aria. The intensity and torment he puts into this rendering is unequalled. A great artist.
I wish they would not cut the whole 'cello introduction. It's so important for the atmosphere.
Pape with this aria is simply the best.
Beautiful brilliant voice. I hope to sing this aria in the near future.
Thanks Rene Pape.

Incredibly emotionally chanted.Creeps purely!!
One of the best singers of our time.I love his voice!

Bravo basso, bella interpretazione.
wunderbar...very moving...sung with conviction and feeling

1:32 The way he floats on that E natural full voice just sends chills down my spine. Very appropriate for the scene in my opinion.

I love Pape´s voice, no matter what he sings.

6:43 - 7:33 I don't know anyone who does that part more powerfully. And there are many outstanding renditions.
was für eine traumhaft schöne stimme...
Sublime, unique. I return to this version every time. Grande, Rene!
i wasn´t really a verdi-fan until i watched don carlos live in the vienna state opera with pape as philippo :D
I was just watching the 2001 Tristan und Isolde telecast from the Met for the first time, and I kept thinking, "I bet he'd make a great Phillip in Don Carlo." And I was right! His tone reminds me a lot of Jose van Dam's...it's just gorgeous.
he so emotive.

beautiful singing...OPEN YOUR EYES.
I think it is the internal nature of this reading that makes it almost unbearably heartbreaking.

This is wonderful, I enjoy his voice
Well, despite this harsh criticism, he electrified the audience when he sang this at the Met gala.
I believe this clip doesn't come from the staged opera, but rather from a gala concert. I saw him singing King Philip at the Met last year. He is one of the greatest actor/singer for sure.
ouch I think he just pin my heart amazing...
Großartig lieber René Pape , ja das ist es...Dein Kollege Torsten Schaepan

Super perfekt!
Besonders beeindruckend und sehr textverständlich.
Heard him at covent garden ,simply fantastic!
2:53 - Big mistake in subtitles: it does not mean "I shall sleep only...", but "I shall sleep ALONE"!!!
Stefano RossiTrue: not she came here from France but he came home from France. Lots of mistakes.
First time I've heard someone not pronounce the "m" in "dormirò sol".
Pourquoi basse ? ?
Forget Siepi, Christoff, Ghiaurov etc. They are very goodm .But Pape with this aria is simply the best.
I respectfully disagree.
I agree for the most part with your assertions, (save for Raimondi - who I always fournd to have an uninspiring colorless sound) Pape is a wonderful singer, but the wound comes from the studio recording age. You forgot to mention Pinza as well! Hopefully an omission...
Perfect....just perfect
great voice....I hate the eyes being closed....but the best is old Sammie
what does down the pitch mean?
do you mean flat?
I heard him live in Parsifal at the MET. He has a very penetrating voice; not light at all. Recordings do wonders to medium and small voices but inaccurate with bigger voices.

This is definitely NOT a bass. He shows no command or dominance & is totally unconvincing!
your argument and rationality is totally unconvincing.
Well, I suppose you never heard Siepi, Christoff, Ghiaurov, Plishka, et al. Pape pales by comparison & could not shine their boots. After hearing those gentlemen, you're still "totally unconvinced", that's just unfortunate for you.
What is the big fuss over this guy? He's neither a bass, nor a baritone. Very dissapointed in just about everything I have heard with him!
@DonPaolissimo Then do you consider him a tenor?
Good voice but he need more and more excercise
Superficial attempt at emotion that leaves me rather cold, like DFD's pale attempts at Verdi roles. You are rather thin-skinned, apparently, & cannot deal with a difference of opinion, so this "discussion" is finito!
