I was in the Berlin Premiere of " Die Walküre" on sunday and René Pape was awesome. Voice and emotion were stunning. Couldn't think of a better Wotan. BRAVO René!!!!!!
Although written for a "High Bass",this should be sung by a bass-baritone. Some high notes are a little strained, but somehow this seems to be the "wagnerian"-sound of the present. Pape is a wonderful singer, wagner a wonderful composer.A dangerous mixture. Hope René takes good care for his voice.

I heard Pape live in Parsifal and in the Magic Flute. He absolutely has the power for Wotan. He is singing F2s in the Magic Flute. But Wotan has to sing many D4, E4, and an occasional F4!
Yes, I Love George London also, there is and has been nobody like him,, truley, as you know!! But he left us 25 years ago. I think over all Rene will be, I hope our next Wotan! Long Live George, one of my great Heros!!
I think he sings very good. Unlike other singers, one can understand every word he sings! Despite this fact I love his voice and I think, that he is a very good Wotan.
Rene Pape is on my short list (very very short list) of singers who can do no wrong. Vocally and dramatically superb. (However for a heartbreakingly tender approach to this, no one compares with James Morris. Different voice, different interpretation, equally impressive.)
Not meaning to be ghoulish or unduly morbid, but being very old and contemplating death, I play a game called "the last sounds I would like to hear while dying peacefully in bed"--this just went on my list. (Along with the second movement of the Schubert string quintet). Pape is one of my favorite singers and hearing his Wotan for the first time is a memorable experience.
From 8:41 which wunderful Pianíssimo i in the way of a singing a Schubert Lied when he kisses the Godnesse of his daughter Brünnhilde: waht a great artist!!!!
@cajape I wish you best of health and hope you will have plenty of time to ponder your choice. Not wishing to be ghoulish either, but when I play that game my preferences are the 2nd mvt of Schubert's Death and the Maiden or Beethoven C sharp minor quartet.
René Pape, einer der besten unserer Zeit! Ihn zu hören ist jedes mal Gänsehaut pur! Fantastisch!

Fantastic! Superb diction and great 'godly' declamatory style but always musical. A real bass, too.
Fantastic - the Wotan of our age?

Very powerful and authoritative Wotan with a beautiful depth. Yet sensitive execution.

so amazing. I hope he does this at the Met

Great singing of a great singer!
Bravo Pape and Gilbert
superb!!!!!!
Godlike voice.
Pape ist Wotan.
Prostě úžasné!
Tolle Interpretation...geile Stimme...
doch Theo Adam ist für mich weiterhin der beste Ansprechpartner für ALLE Bariton-partien Wagners!

@Oberon90 I sure hope too..... wow....
great!
But, have you heard George London's rendition?
I don't like Wagner very much but this is awesome! BRAVO!!! And the singer: WOW!
One of the best music ever written. not totally sure about the orchestra and the singer thus.
Insuffisamment large.
Did New York ever appreciate what they had in Alan Gilbert? Or even care?
too slow, it looses power..... but great voice mmmmm
