I Gave Star Wars: The Old Republic Another Chance...

  • Star Wars the Old Republic, or SWTOR for short, was a Star Wars MMO released back in 2011 to mixed reviews. While some praised the MMO for its storytelling, character development, and fully voice acted experience, others came down hard on SWTOR for its unbalanced PvP, lack of end game content, and overall lack of optimization. Players slowly began to abandon The Old Republic in droves and soon enough the game was official "dead," according to many. At least, that's what most people would say.
    In 2022 Nixxiom sought out to try Star Wars The Old Republic again, deciding to commit himself to hitting max level, giving SWTOR a fair and proper chance. After choosing to play a Sith Warrior for this journey, Nixxiom underwent an adventure unlike anything any SWTOR player had experienced before him. From organizing a guild that worships Root Beer to hosting many community events, this is his story - the story of giving Star Wars The Old Republic another chance in the year of 2022.

    The main reason you leveled up so quickly, is that the system is designed to let even the most story focused players stay on curve. If you only do the main planetary storylines, and the class story and then the main missions in each DLC you can stay on the level curve and reach max level around the end of the story, so any other bit of content is just gonna speed you towards the max level

    • @Alkamatus
      @Alkamatus 2 года назад +7

      Unless you use exp boosts the curve turns on you by nar shadda and by hoth you are 2 levels behind. They give you enough cushion to enjoy exploration quests without pushing you above the planetary curve so turn on that exploration option and enjoy some of those classic quests.

    • @Youboremenow
      @Youboremenow 2 года назад

      Technically if you only do your class mission and ignore everything else. You end up hitting a wall at quesh (and I think this is even with all exp boosts up) You need to have a minimum level (I think 37?) to get the immunisation mission and you end up being 2-3 levels under that cap.

      I couldn't agree more. I was disappointed to step back into the game and find out that those scary final bosses go down almost as quickly as the toughest golden star enemies of the vanilla days that you'd occasionally meet around planets used to. I remember how I used to search for the best possible gear for me and my T7 companion so I could beat my Jedi Knight's final boss after so many attempts, and the moment I did was really cool. Hell, I even remember there were a few of those tough enemies on Alderaan that gave me so much trouble trying to get my story missions done, and now everything feels like it dies so quickly. I don't hate it, since it makes my Jedi feel exactly how powerful throwing my LIGHTSABER at a dude wearing cardboard should, but I do miss the challenge.

    Besides just the story, the thing that really got me interested was the insane transmog and cosmetic system they have. Not only is just about every armor piece customizable in terms of stats, but you can mix and match whatever pieces you want. To top it all off, expensive pieces from years ago that you see on the GTN aren't as out-of-reach as that gold cap Swift Spectral Tiger, or Caravan Brutosaur. Farming credits is actually rather simple, the market is really popping, and you can easily afford that cool shiny piece you see within a reasonable amount of time.

    I still occasionally return to Swtor. I loved the story, and props to Bioware for doing it in such a way that you only really understand what's going on if you play through all 8 of the character storylines. My favorite character stories though are absolutely the Sith Warrior and the Bounty Hunter. Although the Imperial Agent is really good for those that want more espionage. The voice acting is also really top quality. And although it wasn't covered in this vide, the game may be an MMO, but Bioware made sure that you can enjoy all the content without a party, even the operations that are usually 10+ player encounters that tie into the core story can be done solo through a "Story Mode" difficulty selection.

    • @michaelmurphy2112
      @michaelmurphy2112 2 года назад +2

      Probably the best thing about the Imperial Agent is that story has several potential endings before you get to the expansions, but you have to make certain decisions at key points, and the decisions impact the narrative moving forward, that adds some strange replay value just to that class. Most of the other classes it's basically, you're good or your evil, some of the dialogue changes, but the outcome is pretty much the same regardless.

      I was thinking about playing this game, especially now after seeing this video. So I would be completely new to this game. So I just want to make sure I understand this correctly. When I make my first character, you recommend NOT to start with a Sith/Jedi class, since it makes the expansions more immersive? Darn, that was the one class I was excited to play as right off the bat. I'm a Sith Lord fan hahaha. But I guess I'm not understand how this exactly works. In other games like ESO, or LoTRO, I can have multiple character/multiple classes and races no problem. And I can switch of characters whenever I like if I begin to get a little bored of one class. Do things work slightly different here?

The two I suggested just flow better with the kotet expansions as they each have a closer connection storybwise to the expansions. Personally I found the sage, trooper and agent storylines as kind of boring but tons of people rave about the agent so it’s all down to preference .

      Hey, so... I was reading this and the subsequent comments... and I have some questions (I apologize if they might have nothing to do with the original thread):
      - If I buy a 30-day subscription (not the monthly one, by the way), would I be able to keep the expansions once my subscription reaches it's limit / ends?
      - Related to my last question, would I still be able to level up a character at, say level 75, all the way to 80? Or would the character be stuck on 75 until I subscribe again? (and in that case, would it be really hard to go through the expansions underleveled?)
      - How good or bad are the expansions as a smuggler? (I've seen similar comments where people recommend using a JK or SW [since both have great stories] for the expansions, because non-force users don't really fit in them [the expansions], but I'm curious about the smuggler because it was the first character I created in the game and that... I like... as odd as it may seem x'd).

    My recommendation is to play each character until you complete their storyline. Then whichever character you like the best, have that one go thru all the expansions (I really don't recommend playing thru the expansions with every character...talk about repetitive.) That character will hit 80 long before you complete all the expansions. Once you've played thru all the expansions, then you can do whatever you want. Level all characters to max (yes you can do it without playing the expansions for each.) Join a guild. Do Ops, FPs, Starfighter, the "fight tournament," try to collect all the datacrons, get different "housing" and go nutz decorating them...there is just SO much that one can do. Thanks for this video, and to anyone reading this, I hope you enjoy SWTOR! MTFBWY, A

    I have loved this game from day 1. I have spent endless hours enjoying the class quests, going light or darkside for each class. I particularly enjoyed the Bounty Hunter and Trooper classes (ranged dps wearing heavy armor? Yes please!). I also REALLY enjoyed the PvP battlegrounds - much more engaging and fun then WoW imo. Hutt ball anyone? My issue with it became the market and lack of players. I really wish people didn't just jump ship back to WoW so quickly - I honestly think this game could have been a number 2 highly populated game if people just stuck around longer OR Bioware delayed the release to make it more polished from the start.
    The fantasty is intense and it offers a similar but different experience and gameplay from WoW (did I mentioned a ranged class wearing heavy armor?). Not only that, but it offers different roles for the same kind of fantasty. For the same story/fantasy/class you can play a beast pure ranged DPS OR a rogue stealth type dps, or for another class you can choose between a Tank/dps or a Ranged dps or healer (while wearing heavy armor!).
    From day one even in your pleb starting clothes you look incredible. The class stories are engaging and relevent to your class AND you have some choice on what direction you want to go which dramatically changes how you engage with NPCs. You get companions that can fight alongside you and can act as healers, tanks, or dps. You also gain reputation/friendship with your companions and they have story lines you can help them with. (you can also have a relationship with them). You get your own spaceship that you can go on arcade type missions on and use to travel to the different plants. There are also other types of gameplay that WoW doesn't offer, like SPACESHIP PVP and your own housing (multiple housing on different planets) that you can customise and decorate - where you can also find and unlock other decorations to add to your houses (not my cup of tea but some might really like it). There are also Guild ships that can be customised.
    The SWTOR team have really put a lot of love in to this game and did everything to make it amazing. I applaud them and I am incredibly sad that it doesn't have a bigger community.

And thank god that these cash shop items are still sellable to other players, so I don't need to spend real money to buy some flashy ingame pixals and polygons, and can instead grind credits for hours to buy the items off of players. There is no sense of achievement or accomplishment if you buy an item from the cash shop. Cash shops ruin every game they touch. I know they are necessary in F2P Games (like this one) but that doesn't change the fact that it still ruins the experience.
    So anyway. If you're into Story heavy games. This game is for you. If you like Star Wars, this game is for you. If you're only interested in Gameplay, go play WoW, FFXIV or ESO. If all you care about is an MMO with cool graphics, go Play Black Desert Online or (dare I say it) New World.

      FF is a story heavy game too. is more like jrpg and takes his time with the story telling and is probably not for everyone but like everything has a story is it from crafting/gathering over job/role quests. Mainstory or raid storys like everything has story which get mentioned somewhere.

      @Eg x freze yes but the thing with the FFXIV Story and leveling experience is, that it's all in text form. The Cutscenes are mostly very basic made with ingame emotes. At least in the early game. And that is (for me at least) way harder to enjoy. I'm not a patient reader. Playing through the SWTOR Story is much more cinematic and engaging. When starting a new MMO the early game experience is what counts. Because it takes ages to get to later expansions and the Endgame. And I didn't enjoy the FFXIV early game. I did enjoy SWTOR though, even though the graphics suck major ass and the gameplay (mainly combat system) is worse than FFXIV and WoWs.

      @Eg x freze ESO is also a story heavy game. But from all MMOs I've played so far, this game (SWTOR) has the best Story. It lacks behind in many other aspects. But as longs as I haven't finished the story, I'll keep on playing.

    the game was great many years ago. its only problem was the weird wow copy pasta combat. the rest was very good really. it has the best storytelling of any mmo. nowadays everything is ruined, just like every other mmo the game was good only when it came out for few years. the new update changes nothing literally. the game is on life support

    I'll say i've played this game since launch even when alot of people abandoned it after launch when people hit max level and there wasn't much to do even when the oceanic servers shutdown i transferred to NA and dealt with the worse ping because i loved the game. its been and absolute treat to watch people come back and revisit the game and see how much its grown and to see them habour the same passion for the game as I have found.

    I laughed when you said that there is more to do after you hit level 80. LOL I would dare say that is where the real grind begins. Especially since 7.0 was released. The work needed to do in order to max out your iRating is not for the faint of heart. Not to mention, there are a number of things that are only dropped from MM Operations. Operations are way awesome, too. The stories that go with them and how they all basically are a continuation of each other, just a work of art. One thing that you didn’t mention(probably because of time constraints, I get it) was the regular events they have going on during different times of the year. The Rakghoul event, the Pirate incursion, the Gree event… Then there are the seasonal ones like the Life Day event that is basically the SW version of Christmas. Yea, this game is essentially an entirely different game than the one that came out in 2011. It has some serious depth these days, for sure.

    SWTOR to me is like you being the main character of your favorite Science Fiction novel. I remember reading books and imagining me being the main character but in this game you are the main character, well as close as you can be. I leveled Every class probably 20 times now on different servers as well. One thing I do miss though is the old school guilds we used to have. Now days guilds kind of feel like just an experience boost for your new character. No one really cares what you do at low levels. I remember everyone helping low, especially new players do questing and just join them on their journey. Creating on the fly events like doing Flashpoints by just asking in chat if any low level wanted a run through a flashpoint. You know just little things that only took maybe an hour out of your playtime just to make a guild feel like a real guild. I think we used to care more that this game succeed. Now it feels like older players kind of gave up on trying and just want to get the highest level gear and complete their achievements for all the new content. I just started to play from scratch and decided to level a new toon just to get the feel of all the changes they had but I will do one thing once I reach level 80. I will ask in chat to see if any new players need help in questing and create on the fly events like Flashpoint runs. To me those were some of the best times because I got to watch people make mistakes and just laugh with them. I will also try out many guilds on my new server, Star Forge just to see which guild wants to be more friendly with the new players. That is the guild I will ultimately stay with.

    The last time I tried playing again 3-4 years ago the first time I logged in it crashed my graphics card which wiped out all my presets for every game I own. LOL I gave up and never came back. That being said what I remember about SWTOR is the amazing class stories and levelling experiences with both classes I played. I never did any endgame content. This was a great video and got me interested in giving it a try again (especially hearing about graphics update)!
