LOTR: Viggo Mortensen´s impressive sword fighting skills!

- Viggo Mortensen was cast as Aragon after filming had begun, leaving him very little time to prepare for the role, particularly in sword fighting! Despite this, he received an intensive crash course from swordmaster Bob Anderson and ultimately became one of the most accomplished swordsmen Anderson had ever worked with!
And to think he deflected a real, thrown dagger at him in filming the same movie. Major growth and accomplishment
Something he WASN'T EVEN PREPARED FOR!
That dagger thrown at him was a total accident, but he just perfectly reflected the dagger. Avoiding injury and looking so sick, it had to stay in the movie!
Omg, so true, that makes rhe dagger scene even more awesome
@@znuffyztruggles5744 different stories are circulating about this scene. Another version I have also heard is that they wanted to do it and they tried it in rehearsal and Viggo nailed it on the first take, which is now in the movie.
He's also such a great actor he broke his toe and had the greatest scream of all time in cinema.
@@Darth_Traitorous most people will scream like that when they feel a crack in their foot
you NEVER hear people say anything bad about viggo. He commits himself to the roles he plays. iirc people have called him "no ego viggo". so many stories of what he did for others during this film. a very humble man
Man, deserves the same love as Keanu Reeves for being known for being the nicest celebrity on and off set.
He's one of the few who get chosen instead of the bear.
I have seen one of his interviews on how to deal with demented senior... It was basically.. If the demented person keep asking for a person that has passed away.. Don't tell them the truth to prevent from hurting them again and again.. I nearly cried listening to that..
He really is the Chosen One. Thrown into the role without any prep and still pulling off some of the best scenes in all three movies. He’s a horse whisperer too.
He parried the fricking dagger thrown at him too
@@vassalofthenight9945 which was unintended too iirc. Lurtzs actor could not see through the make up properly.
Viggo is a real renaissance man. Viggo is Aragorn.
Aragorn plays Viggo
Viggo is Aragorn, son of Arathorn. We owe him our allegiance.
And you can't even tell he's new to it, that scene was amazing
Viggo will always be Aragorn for me. One of my favorite actors and simply the best cast in Lord of the Rings! Absolute god tier!
Lucky Viggo! He got to learn from the best! I also love how I hear he took his sword with him *everywhere* he went during filming, even when not doing a shoot. That's dedication!
Viggo died at the shooting of LOTR, Aragorn came out
Viggo really was the King on set. Everybody held him in such high regard.
All these great little hidge stories of Viggo are amazing. But I always love the fact that he was requested or encouraged to bring his sword when he dined in villages/cities near filming sites. And would at times go right off of set. I can imagine after the fellowship of the ring dropped. Aragorn spawning in full dress up with a sword, starting to munch down on a double cheeseburger next to you, with Viggo's car-wash danish accent would've been something to behold.
What in the world is a “car-wash Danish” accent? Lmao. I thought he sounded American
@@MerkhVision he sure has american english in his accent, for sure, but no way would i say its american. hes got far too much other accents in it
Bob trained jedi and the future king of Gondor.
This also explains why he kept holding on to the sword even when shooting was done so he could REALLY let it set in and get as comfortable as possible with the sword, especially with the length
Viggo is a true legend. They could not have picked anyone better. He is Aragorn.
Love these shorts made me re watch them again for the millionth time
For me the most perfect trilogy ever
If you listen to any interview with Bob Anderson. You'll quickly find out that every actor he's ever trained was the greatest natural swordsman that ever existed.
Antonio Banderas, Errol Flynn, Connor McLeod
😂
@@devilpupbear09thank you! I doubt a lot. Bob Anderson taught Errol Flynn.
I enjoy his positivity and honestly he seems to praise actors that actually do well. Hyperbole aside, I like how he’s proud of his good students.
I wouldn’t even chuckle, he’s the man who has the luck to have trained great swordsmen, he’s like a master Yoda
Swaping Stuart Townsend to Viggo Mortensen is the second best last minute recasting in history after swapping Eric Stolz with Michael J Fox.
Imagine waking up in that timeline.
They didn’t cast Viggo as Aragorn. They cast Aragorn as Aragorn.
He just had that anime mid fight evolution.
Virgo is so versatile and such a brilliant actor❤❤❤❤❤
Viggo Mortensen was such a perfect Aragorn. Maybe the only actor that likely would've made a better Aragorn is Daniel Day-Lewis who famously turned down the role. At the time I was actually really disappointed by it but thankfully in retrospect I couldn't be happier that DDL turned it down, solely for what it did for Viggo Mortensen's career and the roles we've gotten to see him play as a result.. I also gotta say its so amazing how with such short notice they were still able to find likely literally the second best choice in the world for the role and even crazier that it was when Viggo Mortensen was still so relatively little known. Amazing casting across the board really.
I still shudder at the thought that Nicolas Cage was an option for Aragorn. Bless Viggo
The only way that Nicholas Cage needs to be in these movies is if he's playing every character.
Except Gollum. Gollum is played by Danny DeVito in the Cage Cut
Bob anderson is a legend
That's shocking he is my favorite. Young crush on him. Him and the guy from The Mummy
Brendan Fraser was the guy in The Mummy. Also George of the Jungle.
Brendan Fraser?
Yes yes
But did you know he actually broke his toe kicking the helmet in Two Towers?
And he chipped a tooth as well in the battle at Helm’s Deep.
@@spartansix2323 and reflected with his swordstrike a real steel dagger from lurtz in the end of the fellowship. this guy is nutz... but the best was his run for fishing, search for aragorn fishing ^^
Who doesn't know that
Which to me just solidifies him as the best person
Like he channeled aragorn himself lol
They just gave him a sword and he was like "YES"
He is Danish... there is viking blood in him!! ;-)
Its fitting that Viggo is a natural swordsman. He's half Danish! 😊😅
Why is that fitting?
@@Drsiegfreidhis ancestral Viking blood is calling, that's why. 😅
@@X.Y.Z.07 nearly every country had swords and good warriors....not just Scandinavia 😂
@@Drsiegfreid because the original commenter has a closed mind and forgets that 99% of the world has engaged in melee combat at some point in their history
Vikings werent great swordsman lol
Damn. I just love him more and more
The fight scenes later on are significantly better - you can kind of track the progression of his training through the films. The first couple fight scenes are a bit sloppy and silly, but they act as sort of an unintentional secondary means of showing his character's evolution. The only issue is that it doesn't make sense in context - Aragorn is about 90 years old (he's also nearly a foot taller than Viggo Mortenson, but Viggo does such a great job playing the part the physical dissimilarities can be forgiven), so he has decades of experience and in the books he doesn't really grow or change as much as he does in the films.
“The first couple fight scenes are a bit sloppy and silly” Yeah, I definitely agree about that concerning Aragorn’s Weathertop fight which looked a little amateurish (and makes sense since that was Viggo’s first swordfighting scene)
his sword fighting and even acting was strange in the first few scenes viggo was in, i always felt he was a bit out-of-character in bree. but it kind of works. at first hes a bit sleezy, sloppy, even rude, and the hobbits are unsure of whether to trust him. then, as they travel with him to rivendell, we see the truth of his character, and eventually his real skill.
Viggo is an amazing human. One of my favourite scenes.
Another irony is that one of the reasons that Stewart Townsend was canned as Aragorn was that he wasn't willing to do the advance training or prep work. He kept saying, "We'll pick it up on the day." Viggo had to start out with a crash cram course and then had to pick it up on the day. Viggo then went on to spend his off time and time between filming to learn what the others been able to work on for several months. Viggo really worked on riding and bonding with the high energy war horses that he had to ride.
At first I hated the actor of Aragorn, probably because of the way he looked. But man I fell in love with this guy, unbelievable ❤
Dude i would absolutely watch a full documentary of Viggo Mortensen just doing the stuff he does during the making of these films
He was born ready
Viggo is a man of innumerable talents including fluency in a plethora of languages. No surprise that he was a quick study and became a virtual master of his craft.
The true King 🎉
He's a dane. He is a good camper and a swordsman.
Seeing all these behind the scenes and commentaries, makes me think that this isn't an ordinary film making but also a camp for the actors to become the best version of themselves, or even unlock some of their hidden potentials 😆
I swear, Viggo is secretly the actual Aragorn.
It also helps he was fighting five ring wraiths. Aragon would know exactly what they were, and be a bit worried? Concerned? If he could even win that fight, so sloppy rash actions make sense for a desperate man.
A lot of people do know. Its practically a meme at this point
Only makes his performance more impressive
He turned up, was told he would be Aragorn. Said "okay" and became Aragorn.
I'm pretty sure everyone knows that Viggo was cast after the movie started.
Tis Viggo!! You are like the buzzing of flys to him!! ❤
He is Viggo! You are like the buzzing of flies to him!
That’s my king
The way he talks in interviews is so cool
This is so fkn stupid. Viggo Mortensen wasn't even there to film that scene, 'twas Aragorn, son of Arathorn, ranger of the north, true heir to the throne of Gondor that turned up to film this scene.
Stuart Townsend backed out...🗡️..and Viggo Mortenson took his place 😮..After his son encouraged him..With absolutely no prior training and no script.. I think 💬 he did an excellent job of convincing the studio bosses he was the man ♂️ for the job😂
Aragorn as Himself
It's amazing to me the commitment of these actors. Today, all the RoP actors have to have their emotional support staff on set with them so they feel likked after.
He had to be a part of this. He helped made the movie looked good. I worked at the home office in Croydon and the department we went as a Group. Going for the toilet break, painful!😊😅
Viggo Aragornsen is such a fast learner.
Technically, he would be Arathornsen 😅
I love vigo
Love Viggo. ❤
Viggo is amazing.
However, I wouldn’t say he’s the BEST swordsman Bob Andersen has ever worked with, because Bob Andersen was one of the two people who choreographed the Cliffs of Insanity Duel in the Princess Bride.
Viggo wasn't cast to play Aragon. Viggo was born to play Aragon.
He’s just built different
Ofc is a great swordsman, thats diego alatriste
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I swore that Viggo was an expert swordsman before he even started LOTR
Viggo legit slashed a dagger away from his face with his sword. Talk about being a quick learner.
That is awesome
He just a natural
♥️♥️♥️ Viggo
Viggo and Keanu should’ve been doing films for years….
Talk about a role being born for.
Christopher Reeve for Superman, Henry Cavill for Geralt, and Viggo Mortenson for Aragorn.
There's more, much more, but I thought that was enough to make my point.
Viggo bad ass
A history of violence with this man
Time to add this to the list of fun facts
Wow
"Pre-pär"
Viggo gave 150% for that role !
That's just what he tells his students so they'll come back or refer him for more business lol
Bob Anderson needs no referrals; to be his student would be the greatest honour.
I won't forget that name
Why so surprised? He's descendant of Numenorian. They're like blessed men
did you know that Viggo actually died of sepsis in "The Road"?
He just had to be there fighting five wring wraiths. 😂 Like yeah that's normal
Viggo is the real Aragorn
Meanwhile on Game of Thrones:
"We have to cast someone to play the most capable swordsman on the show, Jaime Lannister."
"Well, we have this guy and his swordsmanship is the worst I've ever seen."
"But is he handsome?"
"Yeah."
"Perfect. Fuck the swordsmanship, we'll use him."
Viggo was actually going to be played by Tom Hanks.
Danny K vibes. IYKYK
He really just said "GIT GUD"
...
And gud he had gott-ed...
so what we did was actually attack him with real weapons... and what do ya know he somehow got good at it really quickly
I mean considering he was fighting unkillable beings I don’t necessarily think he needed to look like a very good swordsman, not that he did anyway😂😂, but just waving the torch and swinging the sword like a madmen could possibly seem like a good idea against the black riders
There is no other Aragorn.
Everyone knows that he was hired late. 😂
It showed too. I always thought he was going to a Star Wars set and got lost with how bad his sword skills were. His acting skills almost made it go unnoticed... almost.
The sword master training the cast said Viggo was the best, most talented student he ever had
If you’re a sword master like some of us I’d forgive your assessment. But since you’re not your opinion is stupid.
Viggo did phenomenally well but no one can make up for being cast 12 months after he should have been
So glad they did because Townsend was a terrible idea for this character
Why was he hired so late?
They hired another actor to play aragorn but unfortunately it fell through and viggo was basically their last desperate attempt to hire as aragorn since the clock was ticking and they had to start filming.
@@KortneeLeFay wow! Was that ever a hidden blessing!
I need Viggo in another IP that puts a sword in his hand!
Prepær
Wrong. We all knew years ago. I even knew by return of the king and I was 12.
Everybody knows that! After all they met him on a rainy day, in a bar, where he was sitting in the corner, pretending to be all cool and shit... 😂
Providence! Thank Jehovah!
Everyone knows this
He would’ve been a rare warrior poet had his time been a few hundred years back.
