    I've had mine for about a year with no problems. And it runs daily. I clean it with vinegar water and I run vinegar water to make ice cleansing real nice haven't had any issues

  • @whynotwine
    @whynotwine 2 года назад +2

    I have this same ice maker and it has been such a hassle. I had the same issues with Curtis Int'l as well (and they wanted me to pay to ship it to them). I gave it an extremely thorough cleaning the first time. I'm now on my 2nd time repairing it and I'm about to take it all apart. I strongly recommend others do not buy this.
    UPDATE: In a reply below, I used an unorthodox cleaning method that seems to have worked. These things require extensive cleaning but they aren't designed to be extensively cleaned.

      What is wrong with it? How do I fix mine? Only had it for 2 weeks! It was a gift. Where could I return it?

    • @whynotwine
      @whynotwine 2 года назад

      @@Veteranfarm Mine made horrible noises and no ice. I fixed that with a big cleaning using water and vinegar (you can find some videos). The warranty is horrible, ask for a receipt from the gifter to exchange it. What problem are you having?

    • @whynotwine
      @whynotwine 2 года назад +1

      @@Veteranfarm Hey, I just tried a last ditch effort and I was able to get it producing ice again. What I did was got a jello shot syringe that I had laying around and after running the cleaning cycle twice with 1/2 water and 1/2 vinegar, I started pushing water through the "up" tube and pulling it back and doing that over and over. The amount of residue that came out was concerning, especially since I clean it every 2 weeks.
      Obviously, you would be doing something like this at your own risk, but as of an hour ago, it's making ice again.

    • @Veteranfarm
      @Veteranfarm 2 года назад

      @@whynotwine I drained it and it has been doing pretty good. I have been using water from the filter water of the fridge, not sure if that makes any difference at all. I am just waiting for it to start screwing up again. Here's hoping. I'm keeping all your techniques, however, when it does act up. I'm not a fan of frigidaire

    So sorry for your less than desired experience but thanks for such a thorough review. My machine ( purchased 2 weeks ago but was first used 2 days ago) made a wonderful batch of ice the first time. On this 2nd batch , not so much. It's taking so long now. I have been hearing a kind of different sound then before. I'll give a fair chance ; while keeping a close watch. I have a " Return " date of Jan.31st , just in case things don't work out. Again, thanks for your indepth review.

  • @lrach3820
    @lrach3820 Год назад +2

    My advice to people.......just don't. Yes, the ice is great. The machine itself is one problem after another. We always use distilled water. It leaks (not just from the door opening). It was always noisy but now sounds like a piece of farm equipment in the kitchen. A pain to clean. The cost of this appliance is an indulgence for many and Frigidaire should be ashamed of the product quality. Either these machines haven't been around long enough to work out the bugs or it's just a bad product.

  • @frankroper3274
    @frankroper3274 2 года назад +2

    The only thing I can think of is if you were not using distilled water the water could have been sticking to the evaporator. Then the ice would not harvest completely and new water would run over the top and build up until it caused the pressure on the lid. There is ice machine cleaner but you normally only need to use it around twice a year. You can get a small one for less than 100.00 that will make 26 lbs per day!

  • @kesslerfox9858

    These domestic Ice makers have a refrigeration compressor. It freezes the ice in the Wheel with slots. A common cycle will flash freeze the ice then once a cycle is completed the Refrigeration Compressor reverses and turns on a Defrost cycle and ejects the Ice and then it falls into the collection bin. With your ice maker practically exploding… it sounds like your machine encountered a failed Defrost cycle and the ice kept building.
    I’m honestly surprised your Compressor didn’t die first. Most commonly it will run then the Compressor will Lock up for an unknown reason. It tries to free itself and what can happen is the pressure builds too high inside and then the terminal plug on the side of the Compressor will violently Blow out the Refrigerant and Hot Compressor oil. These Units use a Flammable Refrigerant called Cyclopentane or isobutane. Mildly flammable but still a significant fire hazard should these units have a catastrophic failure. Sorry this happened to you. This is cheap shoddy engineering to make a quick Buck. I hope you have better luck in the future.

  • @AmishMarine

    The unit needs to be descaled from calcium buildup. All icemakers have this problem. When it squeals you will know it needs to be flushed with a vinegar and water mix overnight. You will need to remove the top plate and place a hand wash towel that has been saturated with vinegar over the round cylinder. That is where the calcium buildup is located. You may need to repeat this if your water is hard. You can always add a water softener system but they are very expensive! I have a cheap portable water softener system in my camper. That is where I use the portable ice maker.

      How are you enjoying the opal? How long have you had it and which model? I actually ended up getting a new air nugget ice maker and even this one apparently was part of a ‘bad batch’’ because there are wax or plastic flakes coming out in the water. They said it was an issue with the model I got and they are sending a replacement 😑 I will say new air’s customer service is great but I’m so over replacements and returns of ice makers after this I’m out the game 😭 I wanted an opal but the reviews were so hit or miss for the opal too that I was scared

      The GE Opal Ice maker is a TERRIBLE MACHINE! Over rated and under performed in a nut shell. It's a huge disappointment when you spend so much money. I had expectations that it was going to be a good machine. We just bought one a couple of weeks ago based on the positive reviews. But after flushing it out on the FIRST day before the first use, the ONE button won't even turn on. It's like it's dead. We had to end up unplugging it from the wall and wait like 30 seconds and plug it back in. This happened several times already. It only works with my app on the phone. 2ndly, it's produces VERY slowly. In an hour, maybe about 2 small scoopfuls. Who can wait that long?! Also, the nuggets are so tiny. About the size of your pinky finger. 3rdly, it shut itself off like in an hour. I am so annoyed with this thing having to turn it back on all the time. It's not even a quarter bucket full and it turns itself off. I spend my time having to "babysit" this thing, afraid that it'll turn itself off and my husband won't have a cold drink after a long day of work. Another thing is, it flushes water into the holding bin. No idea why, but all this does is help melt the ice. Not worth the money. Save yourself the time and grief. We are returning this piece of garbage.

    It looks like that machine is missing an arm that spins around slowly. I don't know if the arm is used to break off the ice and push it down the chute. Perhaps the missing arm is what caused the machine to fail like that.

  • @james4582
    @james4582 3 года назад +4

    I’m assuming it has and auger driven by the motor and gearbox like commercial machines.astheiceis collected it drives it up through this holes helping to form the ice. If the ice doesn’t move upward or collects around the top of the ports it’s forcing a larger clump of ice up into the cabinet that keeps building and won’t exit into the bin.
    That’s just a Swag (scientific wild a** guess) thought. I know little about these domestic machines

      @james4582 3 года назад +3

      I have worked for 45 years in commercial ice machines.

      Ice makers all do the same thing
      However each manufacturer has there own way and style of ice
      Flakers and nugget machines usually have a similar method as I described.
      Cubers and mini cubers Usually have different ways depending on the manufacture.

    • @AmishMarine
      @AmishMarine Год назад

      @@james4582 Yep, All Ice makers have the same problem with calcium buildup that needs to be cleaned with vinegar by saturating, flushing system, and accessible ice-making metal parts. Almost all people complain 1st or 2nd-time portable icemaker owners who are not into troubleshooting. Unfortunately, there is very little tech support, poor manuals with limited info, and almost no online support. I t think they do this on purpose. They want you to buy a new one.

After the cleaning you just put water into the water compartment on top of the machine and press the "ice" button it should start making ice within 30 minutes. Oh my God! It literally broke your damn cabinet! What the crap! No, the wife will not be getting this guy. I was going to buy her one, but knowing what I do about modern product production, I knew that this would be made in China, by a generic manufacturer, and have the name brand slapped on at the end of the line, and sold as an original product by a name brand that USED TO make their own products, and now coasts along on that name recognition, just slapping it on whatever crap they get way cheaper from China. I work in HVAC. and we stopped selling all the high end Trane, Carrier etc, garbage for this exact reason. Don't buy name brand anymore, you are LITERALLY paying for a name brand, sticker/label/branded box, with the identical same product inside. DO NOT PAY $600 for the same machine that says Opal on it. Trust me.
