Thank you for making a video about this Kevin. There are not many detailed videos on this topic, and learning the fundamentals right is very important when beginning to learn guitar, and I wish more teachers talked about this in more detail. For me, I held the pick in a way for many years which caused me to reach a stand-still in terms of progress in my playing. So, after playing for that way for many many years, it was really hard for me to switch to the more 'conventional' technique, but I am glad I made that switch. There are so many minute aspects of playing guitar which got somehow overlooked because I never took formal lessons from anyone. And ofcourse we did not have the luxury of RUclips!

Thank you so much Kevin for your very thorough personal response to my question. “My” teacher is actually Justin of Justinguitar, so not really “my” teacher. I revisited his video on beginning strumming, and he does stress strumming from the elbow and not the wrist. However he mentions that as you advance, strumming from the wrist can be a useful technique. I’ve only been playing for two months, so obviously still a beginner. I expect Justin will have more advanced videos on strumming as I progress through his course. Your explanation makes perfect sense. Thanks again for taking the time to respond in such a detailed way.

I'm disappointed to hear that from Justinguitar. Just go ahead and start doing it now. Like every new skill on the guitar, it takes patience and practice time. Keep at it and you'll get there!

Thanks Kevin. I’m going to apply what I’ve learned here, especially when dealing with 16th note patterns. I think your right. The wrist is the key to unlock the necessary speed and precision needed especially for increasing my abilities when it comes to faster tempos. Many thanks.

This could not be more true. My excellent guitar teacher taught me this back in the day and those foundations were essential. I can’t really imagine getting much speed and/or precision from the elbow in general. 🤔😁

And who, pray tell, was that most excellent (and dashingly handsome) guitar teacher? 😁 It's good hear from you buddy! How you doing?
