  • Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is the comeback kid of Dreamworks that we've been waiting for since their debut of "Shrek", "Kung Fu Panda," and "How to Train Your Dragon." Could this movie have just surpassed "Kung Fu Panda" as my favorite animated movie of all time? The jury is still out but I can't deny how great this film is!
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish stars Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Harvey Guillén, Florence Pugh, Olivia Colman, Ray Winstone and John Mulaney.

His backstory is so horrible and sad, yet he still has so much optimism, appreciates all the good things in life, and just wants to help people. One of the best parts is that none of the protagonists get what they want through magic. Kitty gets her wish when Puss matures. Puss resolves that he doesn't need a wish to have a great life. Goldi never needed a wish at all, and just needed to recognize that.
So, there's a subtle message that there are no magic solutions; you just need to recognize the wealth you have around you and to put in the work to appreciate the good you have in your life instead of dismissing it in favor of pipe dreams.

Another way to look at Puss deciding to fight instead of making the last wish is simply that it would have gained him nothing and cost him everything…and he realized that in the end. Wishing for his nine lives back wouldn’t have put Death off his trail. It would have just made Death all the more determined and relentless. He would never have had another day of peace if he was even allowed to leave that little “arena” Death had made for their fight. And it would have probably cost him Kitty at the very least. Sure, he could have wished for immortality, but I doubt Death would have quit stalking him and striking indirectly through both physical and emotional torture. Immortal Puss? Fine. Pick off all his friends and acquaintances one by one. Leave him alone, broken, and isolated. As Death said, he ALWAYS wins in the end.

Yep, and in the end, Puss accepts it. When Death says "You know we meet again, don´t you", he just nods. As an animation film director, this one is easily in the top 5 Dreamworks of all times, with Prince of Egypt, Kung Fu Panda 1 & 2 and How To Train your Dragon 1.
This movie was definitely Dreamworks's answer to Spiderverse !
Like KungFu Panda, this movie is pure comfort food ! I've seen it twice in theaters, and watched countless reactions and reviews about it, and probably still going again for a 3rd time with some other friends before it leaves the theaters. If it still plays at your place, go watch it in theaters, it's really a movie that's much more appreciable on the big screen.
As for the villains, sure, Death is the absolute standout that will go down in history as Dreamworks's best and most iconic villain ever, but Goldilock and the bear and Jack Horner are actually great on their own, each for their own reasons, the 3 of them working in tandem to be the perfect antagonist (Death is philosophical and the one that kickstarts the whole movie, Goldilock is the sympathethic one, and Jack Horner is just pure evil human greed personificated, which reminds me a lot about the animated short Man, from Steve Cutts, without a shred of redeeming qualities). The fact this story was able to juggle all 3 of them so easily (when other big movies like Spiderman 3 failed) shows how hard this shit is to manage, and this movie makes it look like so effortless !
Some movies just click, and it's just obvious when you watch them, they just feel right ! You're blown away, don't see anything to complain about, and everything just falls in place.
In my life, I've had that feeling with Star Wars, Back to the Future, Princess Mononoke, Amelie Poulain, Shaolin Soccer, Kung Fu Panda 1 & 2, How To train your dragon, Into the Spiderverse, Everything everywhere All at Once, and now this movie. It's the kind of movie that can be watched over and over and over again.

They were fun, disruptive, and a breath of fresh air when they came out, but then Dreamworks put out some actual cinematic masterpieces like Kung Fu Panda and How to Train your dragon back to back, Shrek became a very distant memory, all of a sudden.
Nothing wrong with their movies, as I said, they're lot of fun, but I completely forgot what Shrek was about, if only parodying fairy tales, as opposed to Kung fu Panda and How to Train your Dragon, or even Prince of Egypt, which left an unforgettable mark on my memory, as did Puss in Boots 2 now.

I feel like this whole movie is built on mirrors.
If Death is Puss's arch nemesis, philosophically speaking (Death, as opposed to Puss's 9 lives), Goldie is Kitty's opposite (she already has a "family" she can trust, even if she doesn't yet realize it, which is something Kitty never had and is desperately yearning for, to the point she hunts down the wishing map for it), and Perrito is the exact opposite of Jack Horner (Jack had everything ever since his childhood, but always wants more, while Perrito had nothing from its youth, and is perfectly content like this and wishes for nothing more), having this perfect symmetry of 3 good guys/3 villains that just balances the movie perfectly !
It's even shown since each one of these opposites has at least a single vs moment against the other ! It's not a coincidence if the last vs of the movie is Perrito vs Jack, with the contrast between them being that Perrito, who began the movie solo, has the support of all the friends he made along the road, while Jack, who started with an army of minions, is now all on his own, having dispatched all his army.
The more I watch this movie and understanding the craftsmanship that went into it, not just the art, the animation, and the voices and music, but also the writing, the more it's blowing my mind. This movie is a freakking masterpiece ! It's easily in the top 5 of Dreamworks movies of all time, and it's putting Dreamworks right up there again, side by side with Pixar instead of just being the eternal number 2.

Don’t get me wrong, Dreamworks has some GORGEOUS films already, and a fair few of them are technical marvels, but I just can’t express how much more I prefer the creativity and stylistic flairs present in this and Spiderverse. (Though this was more… Watercolour-ey? They clearly had inspiration but leaned more into the fairytale aesthetic more as well) It’s almost like going back to the roots of 2D animation instead of remaining with the sort of stiffness that kind of restricted the films that came before them.

What I find great that is everyone who journeyed to the star to get wish granted did the one thing you are not supposed to do when wishing on a star (told their wish to someone), so nobody got to use it. Yet everybody got their wish, no magic required, just in a different way than they tought.
Jack wanted all the magic - he ended drowning in the most potent magic there is
Goldi wanted a family - she got one, not the one she imagined, but one that was "just right" for her
Perrito wanted a name and to belong somewhere - he got that with Puss and Kitty (and as a side note, Perro means Dog in Spanish, while Perrito basicaly means Doggie, so it fits with Puss and Kitty being variants of "cat"
Kitty wanted someone she can trust - she got that with Puss and Perrito
Puss wanted new lives - in the end, he started a new life with Kitty and Perrito

Wolf is such a badass and a menace. He was like a ghost from the past that just haunted Puss throughout the entire film until Puss had to come to realisation that he needed to stop running, live in the present, and face his fears. "I'm Death, Straight Up." That's gangsta 😎😀

I also like the idea of how puss die but was never afraid of dying until death made himself known to puss. Just like how in real life, we all know that as a human we will die and there will be some close calls yet only when we get into a situation where we are a hair string from death, we realize that life weighs more than ever before.

About Starship Troopers, that's explained in the novel. They go down to the planet because while you can inflict great destruction from the air, an air force can hold no ground, only infantry can do that. And against the bugs, it's doubly ineffective to just bomb them from the air since they can dig down in the ground and emerge unscathed after the planes have passed over.

The only “good” excuse one can use is that they had no plans for Puss in Shrek 2 and he was only going to be a side character and that’s why he wasn’t as capable back then but then with his movie they wanted to make him more badass and now looking back at Shrek 2 it doesn’t make sense his fight scene with Shrek because they only wanted to introduce him and have the main characters meet him and did it in that lazy way.

I think what makes the Wolf works as a "villain" is the fact that he's not actually a villain, he's a force of nature. He's neither good nor evil, rather he's an inescapable entity that we all face at the end of all our journeys no matter what choices we end up making.

Personally, I don't view death as a villain in this movie. Yes, he is someone who opposes Puss and is hostile toward him up until the end, but that doesn't make him a or even evil. He's pissed off at Puss for being just so systematically careless with his lives, which... after that death montage is 100% justified. They really show just how... stupid Puss has been with his lives, and even in the scene with the giant, you see firsthand how Puss' recklessness actually puts people in danger. If he hadn't been so reckless in that fight with the governor's men, the giant wouldn't have woken up, and he wouldn't have had to rescue people from it... or die. In the montage, every last death was easily avoidable if he'd been just that bit more careful with his life. The trouble isn't that he doesn't fear death, it is that he doesn't death... or life. Nothing comes with a consequence for him, and for this version of death, that has to be unbelievably frustrating. So... yeah. Long story short, he's not a to me, he's an . There's a big difference between the two.
