      The way he’s animated is wonderful as well! Skipping frames in animation to make him snappy and ever so slightly unnatural, his eyes flashing white any time lightning strikes, the stiff smile he gives in certain shots when he dashes forward near the end of the film, very good! And he’s one of the only recent villain characters who is outwardly the antagonist of the story and not some surprise at the very end. He’s also not just a force of nature or raw danger, he has a personality and oozes a certain charisma not seen since the older Disney era like Scar or Dr. Fecilier. His (ironic) metaphor of death is also something very interesting to play with. He’s not a sympathetic character but you understand his motives, he’s meant to teach Puss an important lesson but if he doesn’t he just dies. It’s like an amped up version of old fairytale films and stories which is just perfect in this context.

    The Wolf is hidden in so many different parts of the film that it's just incredible. When the crowd does the wave during the fight, you see him watching Puss in the crowd. In the first fight, in the bar, Death's sickles already have 8 marks on the blades. As long as Puss was living in the cat retirement home, Death never came for him, and only showed up during the first fight after Puss picked up an actual blade again, the Gatito Blade. The magical map shows the location of everyone who's in the forest at all times, except for Death, because Death is everywhere, always. During the final confrontation at the star, the magical barrier sucks up and evaporates anyone who's caught in it, while Death just walks through it like it's not there.

    I think it's hilarious that Jack Horner has a gripe with being less popular than Pinochio in this movie because it came out 2022, the year we got three Pinocchio adaptations. The villains are perfectly written.
    One you can relate to,
    One who's just someone you hate for being pure evil,
    And one who's just too awesome to hate.
    There's enough screentime for everyone to shine and understand their stories.
    Especially the moral lesson about mortality for you to value your one life.
    Also Death is so awesome he's not really a villain. More like a force of nature trying to make things right and I love that. He's also so terrifying it questions me that this is a kids movie.

    Not sure if anyone else has mentioned it, but Perrito's journey in the map (Pocket Full o' Posies, River of Relaxation, and Path of Quick and Easy Solutions) are a bait and have dark meanings. Pocket Full of Posies, in the "Ring Around the Rosie" is a refererence to the Black Plague or Bubonic Plague - posies were considered a protective flower and commonly carried during those times. River of Relaxation is a reference to the River of the Dead, or it could be a reference to the attempted drowning of Perrito (permanent relaxation?). Finally, the Path of Quick and Easy Solutions is a not so subtle allusion to the "quick and easy solution": suicide.

    • @Fragmentsinfractals488

      Death and Perrito are "Friends". ha ha.

    • @TheAngryXenite
      @TheAngryXenite Год назад +24

      I think this is reaching for dark implications. The point of the journey to the star isn't to traumatize you but rather to try and convince you that you don't need the wish. As such, it forces you to confront your issues as part of the process so that you'll no longer want the wish and turn back. Kitty wants someone she can depend on, so her path centers around her loneliness. Puss is terrified of death, so his is built around forcing him to confront his mortality rather than run from it. Goldie wants to feel like she's a part of a family, so it hammers home how she already has one and that she doesn't need to feel separate from them. We never see Jack's, but it's a solid chance that it would attempt to convince him that throwing more power into the gaping hole at the center of his being wouldn't make him happy, and structure increasingly sadistic death traps around forcing him to think of the value of what he has and other people where he would be actively punished for throwing things away to advance himself.
      We already saw Perrito's Posies and River obstacles. Neither one was actually bad at all to experience so long as you act like Perrito did, which is to say you appreciate a new experience and let life wash over you rather than trying to force the issue. The river of relaxation is just a river where you get to enjoy yourself for a bit as you're carried along for the ride, and solving the Posies is as easy as smelling them. Why does he have such an easy road? Because he's content with what he has. The Star literally doesn't offer him anything and he doesn't even have a wish in mind. If they'd gotten to the "Quick and Easy solutions" it would probably really have been exactly as easy as you made it. He'd have walked right through it because he isn't afraid, whereas suspicious people would find trouble because they're looking for it.

      @@TheAngryXenite I mean, I get your point but this is far from reaching. Like, ''Pocket full of posies'' refers to the plague, but since Perrito is Perrito, he sees it as a patch of actual flowers. Idk how to explain it, but it fits his character, as in the implication is dark but he sees the positives etc.

    • @gregpl9363
      @gregpl9363 5 месяцев назад +4

      @@iratetrolls exactly, a lot of what perrito went through are things that for some ( similar situations) would lead to choosing for a quick and easy solution, river of relaxation being the river styx, and pocket full of posies is just a phrasing for dead people who ( in that time) would decay and make the town smell really bad, so they put roses/posies in their pockets to counter the stench. so all three of his locations just mean death, but seeing as how perrito, even though definitely traumatised, has the strongest personality and outlook on life, he manages to face it without difficulty. he understands life and how to appreciate even though appreciation isn't always ( directly) returned. Death is the whole theme of the movie and how to face it and learn to appreciate what's in front of you rather than to covet that what you don't have.

    I really thought the dog was going to be one of those annoying cute comic relief characters with no depth that you see in films so often, but I was completely surprised when I did see this film. He's completely likeable, sympathetic, and actually funny. He's a character, not just there for a joke. I also thought in the first few minutes of the film that it was just going to be really kiddy and not have any depth at all too, and then the wolf showed up. I was completely invested after that. This movie reminded me of some of my favorite animated films from when I grew up. Films that weren't afraid to tackle difficult subjects and respected your intelligence. Movies like Iron Giant or Treasure Planet for example. This movie was funny without sacrificing character or emotional beats. It let everything play out how it should and kept it's tone consistent. The wolf by far was my favorite part of the film, and Jack Horner was a perfect antagonist for the rest of the film. By having Jack Horner just be a completely unlikeable and irredeemable, while also being what I would consider to be the main source of comedy, they could clearly divide the emotional tones of the film without ever sacrificing the characterization of any of the other characters. It was stellar writing, stellar performances, stellar animation, everything about this film worked. It was a blast to watch in theaters, and now one of my favorite dreamworks films of all time. The Wolf will always stick in my head when I think of animated antagonists now as one of the absolute best.

    I think since Kitty Softpaws overheard Puss talking about the church and wanting to be there with the dog, she lied and said that she wasn't there to show some sympathy towards Puss. You can tell her attitude changed a lot after that as well.

    Random little detail but when Puss died from the dogs at the poker game, not only was that a reference to that one painting of the dogs playing poker, but Puss also had played 5 aces with a 6th hidden under his hat. I just found that detail hilarious upon rewatch.

    I don’t think it was mentioned, but the thing about coins on the eyes is a Greek tradition. The idea was the deceased would use the coins to pay the ferryman to take them across the River Styx.

    Death walked through the Wishing Star's barrier like it wasn't there. I don't think it can grant a wish that would supersede him when he casually no-efforts it trying to keep everything out (and in)

    19:00 this happens in many mithologies, but the most known off is the greek mithology where you have 2 golden coinc to pay the "boatman" when you die, in the afterlife there is a boatman who takes you to it, but if you ont have the golden coincs, you cannot pass to it, so you get stuck on the shore.

    18:43 It's probably a reference to Charon from Greek Mythology. He carries the souls of those who have been given funeral rites across the rivers Acheron and Styx, which separate the worlds of the living and the dead. In payment, he received the coin that was placed in the mouth of the corpse.

    I think that Kitty hit the nail on the head
    "It's like it doesn't _want_ anyone to make a wish."
    It doesn't. The Wishing Star is what gave the Dark Forest life, and is keeping the Dark Forest alive. If somebody makes a wish, the Wishing Star will fade, and the Dark Forest dies.
    So anyone who wants to make a wish? Is a threat to it and it reacts accordingly. It has to make a path to the Star, but it makes that path as awful and lethal as possible.
    The reason Perrito's path was so easy, was _because he _*_didn't_*_ want to make a wish._ The Dark Forest didn't see him as a threat, and was content with just giving him a fun little magical adventure.
