It makes sense. Unlike most movies that use tension as filler, this movie shows that she was hurt in more ways than one. But she doesn’t overreact and become evil in many ways. Instead, she understands that it was a daunting thing for puss and the fact that he is willing to show vulnerability means he’s changed. Also, it could be that she was physically there, but not truly there in an emotional sense.

    1. The Puss said that he had never been touched by blade. Death is the first to wound him. This is both a metaphor and another indicator of how much more serious things have become.
    2. When a Wolf puts coins on his eyes, this is an obvious reference to Charon and many other burial traditions.
    3. The fact that the mother bear is ready to do everything for the sake of the desire of the Goldie, even though she wants another family for herself... I melted.

A good twist makes you go back and realize all the things you missed
    1. Death appears before his fight with Puss in the bar. When the crowd does the wave during the giant fight, he is watching from an alley in the top left.
    2. The doctor/barber/veterinarian blows out a candle to symbolize death. Just before Death first reveals himself to Puss, a candle goes out.
    3. Death putting coins on his eyes is reference to ancient cultures putting coins on the eyes of the deceased. The ancient Greeks were most famous for this tradition. They believed you needed to pay a ferryman, Charon, to cross the Styx River into the afterlife. Otherwise you'd be stuck in purgatory/limbo.
4.Certain dialogue also alludes to the wolf's true identity:
Puss: Puss in Boots laughs in the face of death, right, bounty hunter?
    Death: So, I've heard.
    5. The wolf being Death also explains his supernatural powers, such as, being able to teleport and not showing up on the map.

Heya ! Here are some spanish notes if you had curiosity !
2:37 Cordova and Del Mar are actual cities and municipalities of Spain ! (Only that is Cordoba and not Cordova)
8:55 The song that plays here it's a Bolero called "¿Por qué vas?" (Why do you leave?) from the Guatemalan singer Gaby Moreno. It's a cry for someone that's leaving, that could be Puss crying for himself 'cause he choosed to retire, leaving the legend behind
"Perrito" is a way to say "Lil Dog" or "Doggie" actually, there's something cute about how they call Perrito all the way in the movie: At first, they just call him "Perro" that's just straight up "Dog" ( 13:08 No affection) but later, they add what we call "sufijo apreciativo" or "appreciative suffix" if you will, that's a little addition to a noun that's more affective and close (Example: Gato, Gatito) and this is a proof that they started to like him more and more as the adventure goes ( 26:31 With affection)
[Edit: This is also called "sufijo diminutivo" or "diminutive suffix" to refer to something small or tiny, and since Perrito is in fact, a puppy, it's logical to refer him like this. But I do prefer my first observation 'cause it's more wholesome]
18:42 "Ay, que miedo" means "Geez, how scary"
24:21 "Gatito Blade" Means "Kitty Blade"
24:28 When Puss throws the stick sword, he says "Vaya con Dios" that is a way to say "Godbye" or "Go with God" It's a phrase mostly used by old people to bless their beloved ones when they went out of home or when they get separated to reach their destinies safe and sound. This is used not just in Spain but in Latin America as well, thanks to the colonialism that brought christianity here by Spanish people themselves
26:06 What Kitty shouted to the three bears when they stole the map was: "I'm going to turn you into bathroom's carpets" that could be a reference about the Mama Bear on the first Shrek movie, that had that horrific fate
27:00 Santa Coloma it's also a real municipality of Spain, but they are many of them with a different last name (Santa Coloma de Gramanet, Santa Coloma de Farnés, Santa Coloma de Queralt, etc)
37:53 "Bien, muy bien" means "Well, very well" (JUST SSSSSASSY)
38:46 "Hasta la muerte" could mean "Until the death" or "To the death"
And a funfact about the Spanish translation is that Goldilocks and the Three Bears have an Argentinan accent instead of an Australian

Dreamworks gives us a sequel to a spinoff of a sequel and it's up there with one of the best films they've ever done. We really don't need a Shrek sequel, but if they can pull it off on this level, heck yes I'll see it. They set the bar damn high though. Spiderverse animation style alone won't do it. They are going to need a story as good as they had for this.

Also I love how the story and the characters are handled. we spend the first ten minutes conscructing puss' character but once he's on that last life and death is finally able to touch him, with a blade nonetheless, all of that building just collapses and puss is left destroyed, terrified for his life. When I saw that scene, my god was I on the edge of my seat gasping. not even talking about the panic attak scene, such a good portrait , or every time you hear that whistle and death appears on screen, it just gave me chills. 26:06 she basically said she's gonna turn them into bathroom rugs which is a reference to Shrek 1 where another three bears were taken away by Farquaad and the Mother bear was turned into a rug.
I'm guessing no one else can Death unless they're near death or at death, hence the end where everyone's lives were in grave danger putting them into a near death experience.

Death (aka The Wolf or Lobo) is without a doubt one of DreamWorks best but also terrifying antagonists in years and Wagner Moura (a Brazilian actor) who is best known Pablo Escobar in _Narcos_ really knock it out of the park. Interestingly despite his actions in the film Death is by no means a villain as he has a sense of honor and nobility, as his main reason for pursuing Puss in the first place was to punish him for arrogantly squandering his eight lives with reckless abandon, concluding from this that it would be best to kill him before he wasted his final life. 🐺🐺
Interestingly, before Puss in Boots meets him at the bar, Death appears in a blink and you miss moment when Puss was battling the Giant where he was in a slight dark corner and compared to the Crowd he was not cheering for Puss but watching him to see if he gets killed and hints of him of his wolf head and sickles were seen on Puss' death card numbers.
Finally, Death's quote in Spanish when he was defeated by Puss: _"¿POR QUE DIABLOS FUI A JUGAR CON MI COMIDA?!?"_ translates to _"WHY THE HELL DID I PLAY WITH MY FOOD?!?"_ in English.

I like how many references there are to the Wolf being Death before the actual reveal. Like when he asks for Puss’s autograph and taps the word “dead” over and over for the signature, the skull pattern on his face, and his use of sickles. But the best one is when he does the “I’m watching you” gesture, he places two coins over his eyes, which is an Ancient Greek custom. The coins would be placed over the eyes of the deceased so they would be able to pay Charon, the Ferryman of the Dead, and make it into the Underworld
Also, complete side note, but making Death be Brazilian and the actor they got to play him just makes him go that much harder. I really hope we see more of him in future movies, but not to an overused degree. Keep him intimidating, maybe have him show up during Puss’s final appearance to aid him in a final stand before Death finally takes him. I think it would be kinda cool to see Puss and Death become homies by the end

    • @timothycarney9652

When Death shows up in the fight where Jack is using his crossbow, the rocks around him make the shape of a skull as well- Side not, I think the coins on the eyes are a common mistake, its actually supposed to be coins on the tongue- but the eye's thing is in pop culture now and it looks great here.
Another good moment- when the doctor/barber/etc tells Puss he died, he blows out a candle- in the bar after the bartender leaves a candle on the chandelier goes out, then we hear the whistling and death shows up.
Finally I love the bit that death has Puss's lives crossed out on one of his sickles- and its the same sickle that puss blocks with his gatito blade and lets push him into reach of his hat and sword.
Other good moments include seeing the reflection of Puss' eyes in the sickles during the first fight, with death's face visible behind them, and then death's eyes being reflected by them in the final fight, with puss visible behind them

    • @alecLogan
      @alecLogan 11 месяцев назад +1

Two things; when he’s tapping the wanted poster and Puss says outright that he “laughs in the face of death,” he scratches the poster in direct response.
Also, the coins on the eyes thing is, itself, not Greek. There was a custom to put payment in the mouth of the dead, but coins on the eyes specifically is closer to a pop culture reference _due to_ that misnomer.

Death was such an amazing character.
Puss in boots avoided deaths claws many times, whenever he was at deaths door he had gotten away.
And the death whistling is so amazing, the fact that puss in boots fighting back against death shows the will to live, Death has decided he will have puss in boots one way or another regardless if he lives or dies its only a matter of time.
And the voice actor sure was good.

I do love death's introduction in this film, and the way the path reflects the personality and desires of the person holding the map. Puss's revolves around his ego and lives, Kitty's around her abandonement isuses, Perrito's around his sunny view of life regardless of the trauma he's gone through and the bears about home and family. Also . . .
    Little Jack Horner
    Sat in the corner,
    Eating a Christmas pie;
    He put in his thumb,
    And pulled out a plum,
And said, "What a good boy am I!"

The dramatic shift between tones when the wolf is on screen as opposed to when his not is absolutely nuts. Not only do the characters take him seriously, so does the entire direction of the film. Hes an unstoppable force, and the movie wants you to know that, and its just absolutely brilliant direction

I like the "new" very important themes this movie tackled, also having the preverbial balls to make a character like Death and having the main character bleed.
There's also, with Goldie apreciating what she already has, in this case a family that may not be biological but loves her to bits. Puss has anxiety, panic attacks cuz he's afraid of dying but death is inevitable, we will all face it but it's best to be ready and calm, not scared. Kitty was dealing with massive trust issues cuz she had been cheated repeatedly but throught started to learn that others DO care about her.
Now Jack Horner, heh, I think the message was some people are simply corrupted, we may try and try and try to help them but some are just not salvageable

_Puss in Boots: The Last Wish_ joins alongside _The Empire Strikes Back, The Dark Knight, Top Gun: Maverick_ and _Shrek 2_ where the sequel is better than the first film. But without a doubt the highlight of the film wasn’t the story but the animation as compared to the first Puss in Boots film this gives off a 2D cel shaded look very reminiscent to the visuals seen in _Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse_ and _Arcane_ especially the former as the filmmaker for this film cite Spider-Verse for the visuals in _The Last Wish_ especially during the fight scenes where the animation is drawn in twos.

Guys, I was at the theater with my kids, I was crying 😢 we had a red cat, my chubby beautiful kiwi, my mate, he helped us a lot, he made us feel better, unfortunately he got sick and it was such an horrible experience, I was crying pampering him while he got worse and worse... the last scene when he said something like "a life, an only one with you" I started sobbing, our kiwi had one life and he gave us su much, we miss him.
Ps. Kiwi brought to us a stray identical to kitty and my brother's dog is a half wolf... they were there 😭😭🥲👌

This is such a great movie, the best since Shrek 2. And yeah, I swear the fight with the giant was totally an Attack on Titan reference, I have a feeling someone at DreamWorks is a big anime fan and probably saw 'fight against giant in middle of town' on the script and they immediate said "it's perfect for an AOT tribute" which is nice since the anime is meant to finish this year. And yeah, first scene with the wolf, it shows that yes we can have blood in kids films now, though I think because it was a little bit, they could get away with. Loved your reaction as always

I realize that the map was adjusting itself based on the wishes of the people that held it to protect itself. For Puss, he wished for more lives, and his map included the cave of lost souls. For Kitty, she wanted someone she could trust, and her map had eternal loneliness on it. Goldi wanted a family, and her map led her to the bear's cabin, showing her that she already had what she wanted right beside her, the map was probably hoping this would deter her from continuing to seek out the wish. Perrito's map was pretty and fancy and easy because he didn't have a wish, or any sort of greed for something, he was happy with what he had, so there was no reason for the map to lead him astray to protect the star.
