I really love Megamind's arc. He was never truly a villain. He just accepted the role everyone labeled him as. And while he did enjoy his best friend Minion, the gadgets, the banter with Metroman, and the theatrics of it all, he never truly wanted world domination. So he tried to create a new hero, who turned out to be an actual villain. But with the the help of those he cares about, he was able to defeat Titan and become the hero he was destined to be. It's a beautiful story, and an excellent subversion of stereotypical superhero genre tropes at the time.
The moment when Roxanne asks Megamind "Did you really think you had a chance with me?", and you see the utter despair in his eyes as he swallows before saying "no" in the smallest voice, gets me every time 😭 Great reaction!
I think that realization was when his (selfish) affection gave way to (selfless) love. He could've defended himself, but didn't because he knew he had no excuse. He thought he could never hurt her, and yet there he was, and he was honest with himself about it. It was a test for his character, and he passed with flying, if tattered, colors. (In the same night Roxanne saw two betrayals from two guys, but one said "you're supposed to be with me!" and the other said "no." That's a pretty serious clue as to which one is redeemable.) And they let each other have a break, which helped their relationship. He doesn't actively pursue her as a romantic partner later, only dwells on the past a little bit and asks her to help the city. And she is the one agreeing to give it another shot. I just love their relationship, man. It's refreshingly mature for a story structure like this. Sorry for the rave
And insgead of forcing her to be withnhim by kidnapping, he just lets her go and goes back to being a superficial villian wirhout really hurton anyone, just fireworks and ACDC. Just works.
So, about Metroman going into music: it's because it's the only thing in the world that his superpowers can't help him do. It means that every improvement he makes is entirely by his own merit.
@@cherrygrabber7172 well the only difference between metroman and superman is superman has an alternate identity. metroman was "metroman" all the time and that totally makes sense why he "retired".
@@coryjarrett2952 I totally picked up on that too. Do we ever hear a “regular” name for him in the movie? He was Metro Man 24/7 since birth. I’m not sure he even had any other name that he used.
In fairness, both Megamind and Metroman were full of themselves, they both had a flair for the theatrics in their respective the villain and hero roles and enjoyed the publics attention. The story is basically when it all gets repetitive, as shown with Roxanne at the beginning and Metroman later on.
Imagine how good Minion knows Megamind, and how good Megamind knows Metroman, to portray them so convincingly that everyone couldn't notice the difference
Megamind is one of my favourite films. It is truly underrated and never got its due. It is still not recognised enough. It is funny, emotional, thought-provoking and enlightening. Megamind's villain persona was bestowed upon him by society and circumstances. He did own the villain persona, but he had a heart of gold that grew larger than his antagonist persona.
It's amazing how Roxanne's outfit color changed from the beginning. In the beginning, she wore red, red as in the color Lois lane wears in Superman. Then Roxanne's color changes to Purple, as in Magamind's blue mixed with Roxanne's red. Then at the end when they fall in love, her outfit color changes to blue, the color of Magamind.
One of the most interesting thing about Metroman's decision to get into music is that he isn't amazing at it. Thanks to his powers he's basically amazing at everything without needing to put any effort in, but he was drawn to music since it's something he's bad at and can invest time into improving and take satisfaction from. Metroman is probably the most interesting part of the movie for me purely because it's debatable on if his decision was good or bad, it was certainly selfish but having spent his entire life in the role society chose for him, a role which he stuck with for decades, maybe he deserves to choose a new path for himself.
I enjoy Despicable Me as much as anyone but when it comes to comparing the two, this one is the better movie. So underrated. It should have gotten all the sequels instead ( well, at least one). But of course this movie just can’t compete with Despicable Me when it comes to merch, the minions are still dominating that market and bestselling kids toys. This is one of my favorites though that has ever come out of Dreamworks. Definitely more quotable, and of course the sound track stands out. Guns and Roses never fail to make a movie awesome.
Even I liked Despicable Me but honestly it was so predictable and overrated because of minions. Megamind on the other hand great dialogues, soundtrack, storyline and characters. Never understood how was it so underrated.
The premise was inspired by superman Essentially, the pitch boiled down to "What if Lex Luthor defeated Superman?" Except instead of Luthor being a wealthy, vicious human, the film offers Megamind (Will Ferrell), a cowardly, odd-looking (but still bald!) misfit from another planet. Metro Man (voiced by Brad Pitt) is more the Superman type, an alien from another planet who is strong, handsome, and can fly. It's easy for the people of Metro City to love Metro Man, whereas the oddball with the big blue head is instantly regarded as "other" and "bad." It's up to Megamind to prove himself, and find his true path
More "If the Joker defeated Batman" than "If Lex Luthor defeated Superman." The Joker had no purpose outside of fighting the Caped Crusader. Lex *did* have plans for world domination.
I feel like this movie got more praise and love after reaction channels became a thing. Like Megamind was always a great movie but so many great movies came out in 2010 that people just forgot this one.
reaction channels definitely helped reinforce the brilliance of this movie. I think video essay type videos talking about why megamind is a masterpiece also elevated it back into recent popularity.
19:19 actually I would go so far as to say that it actually makes the man of steel fight look a little worse since they point out in Megamind that the city is basically empty because he took over it’s only a few people left and most businesses closed down
14:13 Megamind was the first movie I ever watched in the theather and I was so invested!!! I was five years old at the time so of course I didn't get all the jokes, but I understood the main plot pretty well and it was revolutionary for me to find out that a "villain" could be good at the heart! like this whole new perspective on the "good and bad" thing is mindblowing for the child. still one of my favorite movies!
Apparently, a lot of people just watching this assumed Metroman was secretly evil, but he was a cool dude that never really did things for himself, so he retired to be happy.
Oh man i watched this way too long ago and re-watched it a few days ago. It's a surprise that you guys reacted to it just days after i re-watched it. But it's no wrong to watch it for the third time hehe
Thank you for sharing your reaction to one of my two favorite animated movies. The talented voice actors contributed to their great dialogue. This holds up well to rewatching, and I also enjoy it with commentary.
It’s funny how everyone starts off hating metro man off the bat just because of jumping to conclusions. In reality he’s lost just like megamind and doing what he thinks is right and he isn’t a “bad” dude at all. He’s an actual chad.
This movie was based on Lex Luthor's fictional journal. Also, never knew that Megamind would make Steph so uncomfortable and fidgeting throughout the whole movie
This was my favourite animated movie from 2010. I liked this more than Despicable Me and they both came out pretty close to one another. The funny thing is both the movies had a similar character arc of a villain becoming a hero by the end and had a partner with the name 'Minion'. It's a shame Megamind didn't get good reviews upon release and wasn't a great financial success. Maybe people were expecting a level of movie like Shrek or Kung Fu Panda from DreamWorks and in that regard Megamind couldn't match the expectations. Because of it's underperforming Box Office, no sequel was planned. I'm glad more and more people are discovering this gem and enjoying it. It's somewhat attained a cult status and I feel now a Sequel can be made. Even Puss in Boots took a decade to return with the next installment, so Megamind 2 can also happen. DreamWorks and Illumination are already killing it in the Animation business, while Disney is busy running Pixar into the ground. So this would be the perfect time to make another Megamind.
Your channel is one of my favorites and I would really love to see your reaction to the shadow and Bone series, it’s fantasy and it’s also a literary adaptation.
Love this movie and def as many have said it’s a very underrated me. Came back here after watching your reactions to Despicable Me! Can’t for more reactions!
@Steph...Not only for kids. This movie was made for teens and adults or you can say even parents with little kids can watch and enjoy movie with their children even if the kids don't understand anything about it. Most of the time people label animation as a kids version of cartoon, however some of the all time great animation movies are made from well written novels that kids might not understand unless director changes something. I feel bad when innovative or well written animated movies are played only in kids section here in India. You can't even go to watch it😂.
Despicable Me beat Megamind to the screen by a couple months. As a result, Megamind could not avoid being overshadowed by the other, Plus Despicable had more potential for toy sales, which require sequels to keep interest going.

Don't forget Metroman living a middle age crisis in one second.
I loved this movie when I first saw it, I love the actors they got for the voices lol
true but he was never "destined" to be a hero that's the whole point of the movie imo
An anti-villain to genuine hero, maybe?
He's s not an anti-hero, either.
Great summery of the film. A+
Megamind was so underrated at its time. It was superior to Despicable Me. I'm glad it's gotten the recognition it deserved years later.
Honestly. Especially due to the fact that "There's no queen of England" hits different now.😂😂
Sadly, it shared Despicable Me's fate of immensely inferior sequels.
