I've been a part of a few of these situations that were similar.
    Kid signs with a team.
Team says he should take more time to develop.
Kid gets pissed, sounds off to another guy who recently left the team
Former player tells him coach is ass and hard to play for
Kid decides to jump ship since he thinks/knows he's ready for the NHL
Multiple people have said Hayes has his prints all over this. Which gets down to what Hayes said. As long as Hayes is still in the league, he's never going to come 100% clean on what they talked about or what he may have said to Gauthier and he can just deny it till the cows come home. The other part is HOW Gauthier interpreted what Hayes said. What if he just said Torts is a demanding coach so be prepared - or maybe we went full scorched earth and said Torts is an ass, the org sucks, the GM sucks, you shouldn't play there.
We'll never know. In the end, Torts' stood up for Hayes which is admirable and defended their relationship. Philly is playing some great puck right now so I doubt this story has any real legs and should die down pretty quickly.

The dogshit that is 'journalism' has now fully seeped itself all the way into sports. The NHLPA should get in their next contract that they can skip media at anytime, for any reason. Same for the NHL Coaches Assocication. 90% of the questions are canned questions that a 5th grader would ask on 'take your kid to work day'.
'Journalism' needs a HUGE haircut from top to bottom, across all disciplines.

  • @nathanielwiens
    @nathanielwiens 8 месяцев назад

Controversial take - I don't particularly see a problem with the journalism, as journalism is defined today. As an NHL player, Hayes has at least somewhat of an influence on other NHL-caliber players, even if it's unconscious. Whether he directly influenced Gauthier is a different matter. And all of that is irrelevant to what Hayes is actually pushing back against, which is being bombarded by hostile morons. I see the actual problem in fans (particularly on the internet) being legitimate avatars of human-shaped garbage. The fan reaction is not proportional to what was reported. That's on the fans, not the reporter.
In a different market, this story is broken and the fans response would probably be more along the lines of...."ok"
    So to recap:
Reporter - Doing his job, reporting what he's hearing, in a world of click bait and first-over-truth journalism > in the right.
Hayes - Did or did not influence Gauthier, completely irrelevant, doing his job > in the right.
Torts - Defending his players, doing his job > in the right.
Gauthier - Enacting his right to his own autonomy, maybe didn't handle it in the most graceful way (he's 19 let's remember), doing his job > in the right.
Fans - Issuing death threats and celebrating the fraternal death of an actual human being, over a game they don't play, because a guy they know very little about not wanting to play for "their" team, but got a pretty damn good return for anyway > Completely, totally, 100% inexcusably in the wrong.

Yes, SOME reporters are scummy, but there are the readers who eat that sensationalism up, which reinforces the scummy reporting. Chicken and egg. Not much we can do except all try to be better and avoid clickbait

Why Tortorella will never worry about being out of a job in any market. He knows exactly how to handle the media and doesn't give a s%^$ about how far his foot goes up someone. Would love to see coaching the Leafs, but let's face it, he'd have a heartattack, stroke, and multiple ulcers before the first question got asked 😔

Good for Torts. As newspapers and magazines fade away " journalism" and " reporting" are becoming more and more sleazy just to be relevant. The Toronto Sun was recently outed for a clickbait headline that was totally misleading to readers and offensive the the player. This repoters actions regarding his salacious story on Kevin Hayes should see him fired. Just putting this out there because I havent seen this mentioned yet - Gautheir's agent is known to push player- team boundaries very aggresively, so maybe it isn't suprising what happened here..Trouba and Laine both forced their trades from Winnipeg, for different reasons, both are clients the same guy. He looks after the true desires of the player no matter what. Like him or not he's a good player agent.

This right here is why people are hateful and distrustful of the media. You're supposed to report FACTS not facts with your personal or corporate agenda mixed in. This goes beyond sports reporting and is really why our political discourse is so broken. Too much emphasis on being first and getting clicks instead of being right .

Good on Torts shafting that BS reporter. Gauthier may be against Briere's son's inexcusable action toward handicapped people, pushing the wheelchair down the stairs and damaging it. Did Briere apologize for his son's action or even say something responsible or compensate those innocent people? Even though his son was not in the Flyer's organization, how can the GM deter others from copying cat his son and linking this incident to his Flyers? it was a private decision by Gauthier not to play for the Flyers and this seemed like the most plausible reason, given Danny probably did not do too much to diffuse his son's inexcusable action?

I would've been more ruthless. my drean is to tell a journalist to take a look back at 2023 and to say to youself before 2024 to be more intteligent that what resolution are for. to take a hiatus do something constructive like go talk to youngsters in need to make your neighbourhood better. and I would say I want to know your past papers you wrote/question you asked to gauge if you got better or worst. if its better, youre doing not good enough work on your field more if worst I would tell the guy do us a favor quit while youre ''ahead'' cause nothing good will come from you in the future. what pisses me off is journalist like this guy will not take anyone critisism and will stay dumb all carrer long. journalism and ego goes hand in hand.

I love Torts, and he’s so right about this.
But, at the end, there’s an implication by whomever that the death threats were the reporter’s fault. They weren’t.
The nutcases who threatened him are the criminals, not the reporter. He can’t control what others do. You can’t blame someone for others’ actions, or reactions.
Again, Torts was right, and the reporter’s a dick. But he didn’t threaten anyone, and he didn’t convince or coerce anyone to threaten anyone. He just wrote some BS.
Blame the actual sociopaths. The ones who made the threats.

Counterpoint; whether the report was 100% true or false, maybe the people that are actually in the wrong are the pieces of shit sending death threats and mocking Hayes brothers death? Like, the big problem with Hayes getting death threats isn't that someone probably erroneously reported that Hayes advised a teenager against signing with a team, its that people read that report and decided to send him death threats.
