  • In this video I take a look at a number of the best LEGO themes that were cancelled. These themes were cancelled for a variety of different reasons, but I want to shed a light on some of these themes and take a look at how amazing most of them honestly were! Whether it be LEGO in space, underground, Ancient Egypt or in a high-tech city, these LEGO themes truly had a lot to offer

To be perfectly honest, they're all underrated for one reason:
We couldn't afford them as kids, now we wish we had them all if only they were still sold.
And, a sadder reason: They sparked joy when we were children. A spark that few recent sets can ignite as adults, simply because they are designed to appeal to kids. As such, new sets don't appeal to me where the old, and technically hit-or-miss designed sets do.

But Bionicle and Exo-Force were the best by far, imo. These Ninjago mechs lack the charm, uniqueness, freshness, and iconic designs Exo-Force mechs have. My grandpa bought pretty much all Monster Fighters sets ever released for me and my brother. Yes, we own the haunted house, castle, ghost train, cemetery, etc. I mean I seriously doubt there's one we don't have. The total worth is probably about $1000 now! But they are worth so much more to us, we played with them and used them to make stop-motion videos which can still be watched here on RUclips, but we made them while in elementary school and they are kinda cringe lol. But we still love them. I plan to keep them throughout my life and never sell them. They should really bring that theme back!
I also had some small Chima sets still there at my grandparents' house. They are in a large plastic tub at the bottom of a big stack of LEGO, since we stopped playing with them years ago and I haven't even opened that container in years. I remember watching the Chima show and being mildly entertained by it as a kid. It never held as special of a place in my heart as Monster Fighters though. I wonder if I would ever want to sell them...

while not as amazing as the original 2001 run

It's so sad most of the Bionicle fandom didn't give Gen 2 a chance to grow. Yes, it started off very simple in terms of plot and set design (sets still looked amazing, though). However, it seemed they were listening to feedback before its premature cancelation. It also didn't help that a lot of kids nowadays see Technic and CCBS and say, "that's not _real_ Lego." Such a shame.

Pharoah's Quest was PEAK. I was lucky enough to own all six sets and since I knew nothing about the "official" lore for the theme, I made up my own convoluted lore where each of the golden pieces had its own magical power and the protagonists were constantly in battle with the mummies for control of the magic. The giant stone creatures made for some epic battles, especially with all the old timey vehicles and weapons the protags had. I definitely got a kick out of the unique baseplate, I wish Lego would make more stuff like that

If Lego wanted to both make a lot of money and make a bunch of their older fans, who grew up on these themes happy they would do an icons release kinda thing. Like imagine if once a year, every year we got a reasonably large set that was either a remake or reimagining of these classice themes. If they made a new power miners, atlantis, space police, Agents set it would sell incredibly well AND would be so amazing to see it with updated pieces and building techniques. PLUS it would be a love letter to what lego once was. kinda in the same vain as ideas but souly based on sets from this era. They did a classic space and castle set, why not a power miners set?

There is something very unique about the early 2010's lego themes. Lego has really lost it's way when it comes to making original themes. I feel like there is too much focus on non-original themes. These original themes like galaxy squad ooze of pure creativity and it sucks there aren't many creative ideas for original themes nowadays.

I suppose the issue with most of these was the fact that they simply couldn't live up to the legacy of the 90's and early 2K's themes they tried copying.
Stuff like Adventurers/Orient Expedition, Studios Horror, Alpha Team, Knights Kingdom and Rock Raiders were simply goated.

I think the rational was that kids would connect more with a theme if they were there from the beginning. Which is why you would get a space theme or an underwater theme or a mining theme, that were all essentially the same thing. Some humans in some sort of protective gear would fight some monster race for crystals. There would be 2 or 3 waves over a two year period then the kids could get all hyped up for the exciting "new" theme replacing it.

This is something I miss about Lego, just wish we got more original themes, the only ones I've seen in recent years is Dreamzz and Hidden Side from a few years back. They still make a lot of these sets really cool and really unique, but I guess they just never make enough money, when compared to the amount Lego rakes in from Gooner Gamers and Star Wars fans.

  • @madsvigan2898

Power miners died because i can remember as a kid it was only the first sets that was interesting to me.
The lava stone monsters kinda missed.
Think it was because Atlantis or space police came out which just had cooler space ships.
Or really cool gaint sea monsters

How could you leave out Exo-Force?!?!
I actually liked what they tried to do with Nexo Knights. One of the last sets was basically a cartoonified Warhammer 40k Land Raider!!! If they continued, maybe they would have taken more and more inspiration from that universe, which would have been really cool.

Lego Nexo Knights was a theme that l was borderline obsessed with when it first released. The show had me gripped and the sets were just… wow.
I rewatched the show recently and I actually quite enjoyed it. Yes it’s repetitive, but the characters themselves are entertaining enough to keep me engaged. And the soundtrack, while generic, is far from bad

If you assume that Lego sets are generally 30-50% overpriced, you could really think about buying some.
I mean, of course, as a 90s kid, I used to think Lego was endlessly cool. But it was already clear to me back then that Lego itself was never cheap. I just had a lot of luck getting sets and stones from friends and older relatives.
If I ever wanted to buy Lego for my children, I would make sure that the prices were really well reduced. Or just try to get sets and stones reasonably cheaply on the internet. Alternatives like bluebrixx and other manufacturers would also be no problem, as they are significantly cheaper.

lego needs to take the castle knights factions and give them a 1800s-early 1900s theme to them.
