Hi Alisa, I love love your videos. I just got my Brother coverstitch (same model as yours). I am having a love-hate relationship with it. I would like to know if you have more coverstitch videos so I can learn more about it.
Hello there - I don't, but here a couple of quick tips: 1) change the stitch length to a longer stitch, if your coversticth wants to chew up lighter knits. 2) for best results I sometimes have a little fabric "starter", basically just a scrap piece of knit that I place before I start cover stitching my seam (if i do a flat seam, this won't work on a "in-the-round-hem") 3) when I finish my hem in the round - I lift my presser foot and cut off thread at the bolts and gently pull on the fabric until threads come out. I would say those are the key points - I barely ever need to adjust the tension and any other settings, but I do the tips above almost every time I am sewing with it. Hope it helps! Oh, the manual is a HUGE help :)
I bought a Juki coverstitch last year because when I went to buy the Brother model you have there were none available. I wish I had waited for the Brother model. I do not like the Juki. It is hard to thread and I have a lot of trouble with the function of the machine.
I have a combo machine and I have a separate serger. I have the combo set up to coverstitch. It won’t create problems when switching over as long as you thread it correctly. I keep my combo setup to coverstitch because it’s easier to switch between the two machines instead of threading it. (I’m lazy sometimes) Not to mention I have a combo just in case my serger need service I could always switch from cover to serger.
As far as I know, stand alone coverstitch machines for the home sewist haven't been around that long. I bought my first CS in 2009 after getting a serger/coverstitch combo machine for my birthday in late 2008. It didn't take me long to figure out a combo machine just wasn't going to work for me. Since I had the space in my sewing room, I purchased a used Janome 1000CP, the first version of the CS for Janome. It was a good starter machine for me. I've since replaced it with a Brother CV3550 because this machine has the top coverstitch, step up for me. As far as sergers, I bought my first one in 1987, shortly after they hit the retail market for the home sewist. It was a 3-thread Babylock without differential feed. I've had two upgrades since then and my next will probably be a Babylock.
I am interested in buying a coverstitch machine, but I don’t want to spend a lot. I am, therefore, considering this Brother machine, as it is one of the least expensive on the market. You have had this Brother machine for a couple of years. Are you still happy with it?
I have heard about these machines but I haven't seen them so thank you for sharing. I am a little confused because I thought my serger can do this stich too. I have an old serger and it does 2,3,or 4 thread with one being a stich like this, 🤷🏻♀️. I guess I will experiment.

As always, you have to find the right way to work the machine, but you see me use it a ton in my videos, it definitely has earned a good spot in my sewing line-up.
Hi. Just wondering if you've some how merged /replaced your ALL ABOUT MY COVERSTITCH (red sweater) with this one. Every time I select that one this one starts. Just got a COVERSTITCH & looking for a tutorial from you.
So what kind of threats should we use for the stretch fabrics? We just use regular thread or we also have to use stretch threads to hem a Stretch TShirt? Thanks
I have been working with straight sewing machine for a while, I thought of getting a serger , and I came across this video. Please I need your help to decide if I should go for the cover stich.
James, listen to the video one more time - I explain exactly what it is and if you only have a sewing machine - then what should you get next. I also have the same video about a serger, you can search for it.
Thanks for the overview! Any idea if the sewing machines with all the fancy stitches can sew the stretchy hem relatively passably? I realize that it won't have the coverstitch look, but my machine does have "stretch stitches". Thinking those are good enough until a coverstitch makes it into my sewing room :)
Absolutely, also, I would also go with a serger first and then a cover stitch. Serger can also hem knits. Here is how I sew knit hems on a sewing machine - ruclips.net/video/4yv0l7jW310/видео.html
A cover stich machine basically serves the function to hem sleeves, neck bands, pant legs, basically edges. It gives it a nice finish as shown in this video. But it's not meant to sew the entire garment.
Do you have any suggestions on why it wouldn’t be noticing my first needle. It keeps thinking I am doing a Jean stitch and not realizing I have the first needle threaded.. I’ve adjusted everything g
Hello again ,found this video really helpful but do you think it would Handle thicker fabric as in sweatshirt fabric and do you use it for cotton hemming sorry so many questions I would like to ask but .... One more ,can I ask please ,can it do flat lock stitching as I love this look on raglan garments .hope it’s ok to ask these questions .
Jan, the coverstitch can only do the variations of the stitches that I showed. It is only for hemming/neckline stitching. If you want flatlock - you need to get a serger that does that. And yes, coverstitch can handle sweatshirt fabric - that's what I was showing in the video.
Is a cover stitch the same as an over locker machine? I think it might me but maybe they call it an overlocker in the UK and other countries and in the USA call it a cover stitch 🤔 I don’t have a cover stitch but I am looking at buying a serger and have heard of both of them and have seen demos with sergers. I have also heard of machines that do both and this helps educate me.
I wish.... :) technically, your sewing machine could do everything. Most newer sewing machine have and overcast stitch that looks like a serger stitch, then you can change to twin needle to do 2 rows of stitching for the hems.
I never looked into it as I don't have a need for it, but you can look into it by looking up reviews and info on the manufacturer's website. sergerpro.com/brother-2340cv-review/
Thank you so much for this video, Ive been contemplating a coverstitch for a while. Ive been hemming my knits with the serger blind hem but i find the wrong side of the hem looks really sloppy. Deanna, hello there! I am afraid I am not much of a help, because I only had this one cover stitch all these years, so I don't have much to compare to, that being said - I do enjoy mine! As always, you have to find the right way to work the machine, but you see me use it a ton in my videos, it definitely has earned a good spot in my sewing line-up.
@@ThoughtfulCreativity Thank you so much for your response... I really appreciate...
Hi. Just wondering if you've some how merged /replaced your ALL ABOUT MY COVERSTITCH (red sweater) with this one. Every time I select that one this one starts. Just got a COVERSTITCH & looking for a tutorial from you.
Thanks for the video! Very informative :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
So what kind of threats should we use for the stretch fabrics? We just use regular thread or we also have to use stretch threads to hem a Stretch TShirt? Thanks
What sort of fabrics can be sewn on cover stitch machine
I made a knit skirt with a serger. My side seams were wavey. was it my tension or ? The fabric was Ponte.
I want to buy this machine could you please share the link.
How can fabric cut with Brother 2340CV? Let me know.
Does not having a free arm hinder you. I’m looking for a coverstitch machine and didn’t consider Brother as it didn’t have a free arm.
My question is...can or do you use this stitch on say a neckband or the band going down a baby band on a garment that has snaps put in it.
combination machines do a perfect distance of safety stitch of overlock & cover at once soo they make sense
By going to settings on a phone you can speed up or sliw down a videi.
Did you just say sergers can hem knitd????? Howwwww???? I mostly sew knits and don't have a coverstich as yet
Can you use the coverstitch on woven fabric
very good machine I love it thank you 🇲🇦🌹👍
Glad you like it! Have a wonderful day, you and your daughter!
thank you so much I wish you a happy day💝💝💖🌹👍🇲🇦🌷
Hi, can you sew a complete shirt on the coverstich or you have to switch the machine to do some parts?
A cover stich machine basically serves the function to hem sleeves, neck bands, pant legs, basically edges. It gives it a nice finish as shown in this video. But it's not meant to sew the entire garment.
Do you have any suggestions on why it wouldn’t be noticing my first needle. It keeps thinking I am doing a Jean stitch and not realizing I have the first needle threaded.. I’ve adjusted everything g
It will sew with all three the first and third or just the two left ones but not the two right ones together.. maybe it should go into the machanic
Please where can I get the cover stitch machine
Sergers can have a retractable knife so can that make the serger more versatile???
Overlocker is the same as serger. Coverstitch is a completely different machine as explained in this video.
@@ThoughtfulCreativity Thank you, I watched it all the way through but I must have missed that part 😊
I have a combination machine that I have never successfully used as a cover stitch machine - changing it over is so painful!!!
Is there ONE machine that does everything?
I wish.... :) technically, your sewing machine could do everything. Most newer sewing machine have and overcast stitch that looks like a serger stitch, then you can change to twin needle to do 2 rows of stitching for the hems.
Can a Binder be attached to this machine?
I never looked into it as I don't have a need for it, but you can look into it by looking up reviews and info on the manufacturer's website. sergerpro.com/brother-2340cv-review/
Can I hem denim jeans with this machine?
How can I hem my knits with a serger please?
Lexi, I already have a video about that on the channel - please go take a look.
@@ThoughtfulCreativity what's the name of that video please
Thank you so much for this video, Ive been contemplating a coverstitch for a while. Ive been hemming my knits with the serger blind hem but i find the wrong side of the hem looks really sloppy. Not sure if im doing something wrong or if thats just the way it is. What are your thoughts on serger blind hem? Love your videos.
I'm looking to buy a coverstitch machine. Please help me, I'm making a lot of underwear using athletic fabric/knit spandex. Help me
Ooh. I want one. lol.
😊
Hey, I love your energy in your videos! Have you used Pfaff 4870 series serger combos? Particularly Pfaff 4874? Is the seger you show in this video your favorite amongst others?
I bought one used on eBay and haven't used it (or any serger/coverstitcher for that matter) yet.
The cover stitch machines I show in this video is not a serger. I have not used any other machines apart from those I show in my videos - you can see my favorite serger in my serger myths video - link in the infobox. I wish I could be more help to you!!!
@@ThoughtfulCreativity My mistake! Thanks for the reply and link!!
@@kevinm8865 again, sorry for not being more help - but I haven't used any other machines!
@kevin M I have just got a pfaff 4870 serger ...it is a 5 thread overlocker but i don’t think it is a combo one with coverstitch🤔
My 5-thread serger also does a cover stitch. I love it, but I don't understand the point of a machine that does nothing but a cover stitch.
Jesus my head hurts from listening to you talking so quickly :D
For over $600 to do an easier hem that looks so similar to a twin needle. Very little return on investment in my view.
On the right side - very similar to twin needle, on the reverse side - completely different. It is totally up to you whether you see it worthy of purchase.
