Brilliant video, I am soooooo glad you posted! I am very new to using a serger and just starting out! Managed to create a spool of serger thread for my sewing machine yesterday with a long pin wider that the thread bobbin, it was spinning at 100 miles per hour and worked!
I love that you use the Brother. That is the one my husband gave me as a present 🎁 also. You are so clear with all the things you review or explain to us. Thank you for your time & help ✌
You have so many good tricks. You give me so much confidence. I had a Simplicity 30 years ago. Now I have the same serger as you and I’m very rusty. Thanks and greetings from New York City! 👍🏼🇵🇷🗽😀
using the first thread for my sewing machine rather than rethread the serger. I cut the thread leaving the threaded part..use the thread on my sewing machine and then just place it back on the serger and tie the knot and pull the thread through. this works for me for any thread I remove. Thank you for all your tips,
This is my second time watching you- I just got my first serger for my birthday! Your video was so fun to watch. You seem so sweet and your voice was lovely. Made me smile. Felt like you were in my sewing room helping me learn!
Welcome, happy belated Birthday and congrats on your new serger! Enjoy it! I have a very fun and interesting video about 5 different serger techniques that most people don't even have a clue about - so easy and makes a great looking garment
I have been known to wind thread onto bobbins and use those on the overlocker/serger to have all the threads match when I only have one spool of the right colour. I'm going to try out the coffee cup for holding a large cone... beats buying a large spool holder!
I like my threads to match and do this also. As long as the needle threads match, the looper threads can be a little different. Serger thread is finer than sewing thread, but I haven’t had a problem with breakage when using it in the sewing machine, or with sewing thread being too bulky in a serged seam.
I just received a Brother serger like yours as a gift from my mother. She has one, too, and thought it would be great for me to have one, too. Thank you for the tips as I learn to use mine! 🙂
sorry to be so off topic but does anybody know of a trick to log back into an Instagram account? I was dumb lost the login password. I would love any tips you can offer me.
@Daxton Winston I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm in the hacking process atm. I see it takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Daxton Winston DAMN IT REALLY WORKED! I literally hacked my IG password after roughly 40 mins by using the site. Had to pay 15 $ but definitely worth the price :O Thank you so much you really help me out :D
One issue about using serger thread for a construction seam on the sewing machine is that many most serger threads are 2 ply as most garment threads are 3 ply. I'd be pretty careful about using serger threads on a machine.
Some years ago I was given some serger thread in black, and white. Since I don’t have a server I have been using it with my sewing machine, and I love it!
I have a cover stitch machine for about 4 years and I don't know how to use it 😂😂 I would love for you to make a tutorial . Never miss your tutorials!!!!! I understand everything!!!!!
Another good thing for a new purchaser to do is take a class. A lot of places where you purchase your machine (sewing or serge) offer classes to learn about your machine. Something to check into. Thank for your video 👍🙏😊
Hello there! T Don't be nervous, just open up the manuka and grab a pile of fabric scraps and follow what the manual says. I find that will build the confidence and takes the guess work out of it.
Yes! Definitely would like more information regarding Cover Stitch and Serger. I have a Brother 1934DX. It works like a dream when I do my homework with the Manual. Several people I know have both, a cover stitch machine and a serger. I don't know why. However, YES on more information. Emily Neeland
When using my sewing machine, I like my threads to match if not blend in with my fabric, but I recently read an article that suggested we can get away with using neutral colored thread, a light shade & a darker shade. For years I've sort of used that idea in my serger loopers but still matched needle threads to garment. What do you think of just using neutral threads?
You are such a gem Alisa! Thanks for all the helpful tips and answering my question too 🤗 ❤️. Also, I hadn’t thought about using serger thread to top stitch. I’m going to use a coffee cup as you suggested, and try it sometime!
I have the Bernina 80dl ,had it a few years now but never really bothered with the tensions till I had proper time during lockdown when I couldn't work a sat read the manual and got a pile of different scraps and tried them all out and writing down all tension ,sticth lengths knife adjustment ect and to match each fabric which I stuck in a file so now I only need to refer to this so much quicker . the big file. and plastic sleeves on offer 20 sleeves plus twenty free at the time plus printer 500 sheets paper all came from Poundland ( UK ) I'm lucky enough to have a dedicated sewing room and as I live by myself if I don't have time /the inclination to tidy up I can just shut the door I have two cot sides hung on my wall which with hangers, butcher hooks, or cup hooks , on which I hang many things plus adjustable banquet table that I use for cutting fabric which is covered with mattress ticking the mattress tick goes down to the floor si I can hide my hover and boxes of stash out of sight and nice and tidy too and a sheet of teflon so I don't need to get my ironing board out that often
Great reminder for me! The curves always get me. I do lock my knife but the reminder to hand crank and reposition under the foot is a good one. When I got a serger many years ago I was told I could get away with threads of black, white, beige or tan. That's what I use unless I'm doing a decorative rolled hem on the edges of napkins, for example. Then I use a matching color for the threads that show. I ALWAYS test before I start a new project. Clean regularly. Thanks for the tips!
Hand cranking direction on a machine can vary. You are correct to say that you should only hand crank in one direction. However, I recently purchased an older Baby Lock serger which requires to only handcrank in the opposite direction (away from me) than what I am used to with my Brother (towards myself). I also use serger thread in my sewing machine but only when I'm out of a certain sewing machine thread color. Thanks for your additional tips.
Thank you for your really interesting videos have learned so much from you ..I am thinking of buying a cover stitch machine but know absolutely nothing about them so any advise would be greatly received .

I too bought a coverstitch machine recently, aaaaaaand - yes please, tell us more! ;-) I'd also love some advice about sergers - what do you do when your threads sit off the edge of the seam? I've tried playing with the tension, but to no avail!
I have a shelf that goes across my sewing area and I put the large spools in the back right corner behind my sewing machine and run the thread through cheap hooks underneath the shelf and direct it to which machine I want to use…it’s quick and easy to rethread. You mentioned cover stitch…I rarely us mine. Now the serger…I was afraid of it at first because rethreading it but once I got the hang of it I use it as much as my sewing machine…lol
I would love a video on the cover stitch machine. I have one but never use it! 😖 Just found your channel and really love your videos! You do a great job explaining pattern drafting!
I have not used this trick but another sewer said she buys one thread and makes bobbins for the other threads. However, you will need something to place on top of those bobbins so they will stay put.

Please do a video on the cover stitch machine! My friend got a second had serger by Janome and that thing hates her! I can set it up for her and get it working correctly (her threads like to snap on her) and then when she turns it on to use it, it doesn’t work properly 🤦🏻♀️ maintenance is pricey when you don’t have the money.
Regarding the cost of thread: use Joann 40-50% off coupons. When you consider the cost of a small spool of thread, and a huge serger thread spool, they are not expensive. The only serger thread I’ve ever run out of is white. They last forever. Also, when you change colors, put the two fullest spools to the right side.
Thank-you so much for all your videos! They have been incredibly helpful. I used the flat stitch on the bottom of a t-shirt, disengaged the knife and there are holes along the seam. I am so disappointed! It's an expensive t-shirt and I really wanted to simulate the same ladder effect. Do you know why the holes appear? It's like the fabric has been torn.
Fiona, it could be a number of reasons - needle to big, tension too tight, up to the thread you used... try on another scrap piece of fabric and see if does the same and problem solve from there.
It was the needle! I just bought the Janome 793 PG, and as you can tell, I'm a newbie. It arrived with size 14 needle. I changed it to size 11, no more holes! Thank-you!🤗
I would like to know about the difference in the machines and if you can also use a cover stitch machine as just a serger. And is threading them the same?
Annie I don't think you use a cover stitch to replace a serger. I believe it's for those nice hems like what you find on active wear. Whitney from Tomkat Stitchery had a serger that converted to a coverstitch. She found it quite cumbersome to change it from one to the other. However, she does a LOT of sewing. Something to consider, perhaps. She eventually got a dedicated coverstitch and loves it. It really depends on the kind of sewing you do. I use my serger a lot but don't feel a coverstitch is necessary for me. Check out Whitney 's channel.
A cover stitch only has one looper and no cutter, so nope it's not going to replace a serger. Granted you can achieve a very similar looking hem on a knit to a cover stitch if your sewing machine can take a twin needle.
I would love to know what is the difference between a serger and coverstitch machine is and what the different uses are for them? Trying to figure out if I need both or just a serger? Any advice will be much appreciated! 💗
I had been confused on the color of the thread showing in a seam, when stretched. You answered it!! Now I think I know the left needle thread should match your fabric. If doing a rolled lettuce hem, the Upper Looper is the one that will show the most. Do I have it right?? Thanks for all your great videos :)
I've watched so many serger videos, and so glad you have the brother as most of the videos are for Juki or Bernina...
