- Dear Sewing Friends, in this video we are talking about sergers! I get asked a lot of question, many of which are lead by faulty assumptions (myths) about sergers! Is it the same as sewing machine? What can it actually do? Is it only good for knits? Let's dive deeper and see what it is all about and answer the main question: do you need a serger?

I was a lucky Lady the day I bought my Serger. I was returning yarn to Zellars,, ( Canada where I live. And at that time we all collected points. On the shelf behind the sales clerk sat a Serger. I asked why is it brand new and only costs $80.00? She told me a Lady bought it with her points and didn’t like it, so it was returned. So I quickly told her ITS SOLD. Hahaha. I sure was a lucky and greatfull Lady that day, and chose that day to return one ball of yarn. ( I went there to buy more yarn that day too. Such a happy story. ) Ps I’m still scared of it as I’m not good at it. ❤️❤️🇨🇦
I had to laugh at your deal at Zellers. I got a great deal just before Christmas on a Singer serger (not a deal like yours though!) at Canadian Tire of all places! I wasn’t actively looking for one but just happened to notice a special buy in their flyer. I quickly googled the model which ranked among the top 5 and the price was at least $100 cheaper than anywhere else! So I made a quick trip to the store and bought it! Now I am watching videos to learn more about it and how to use it. I started sewing again during Covid for something to do (I have made about 100 masks so far for family and friends). Now to try the serger!

I returned two Brother sergers. They are the worst. I bought a self thread Victory and it is so easy and professional looking. It is also easy to use. The Brother had many problems. If you buy one save your receipt!!!!!
do u need a serger? my answer is YES. bcoz if u sew u would always feel u r missing something if u cnt hve that clean edge. I feel so bad doing the alterntves.
I sew a lot of clothes for my kids and the main fabric is jersey, so for me to have a serger was amazing... I love my serger and it's something that I consider a must if you want to enjoy sewing.
Yes, you definitely need a serger in a tailoring setup. My mom has been making dresses and shirts since young and she is now retired in her late 70s. I started picking up the hobby repairing my family's garments using an in-law's sewing machine. After trying out the machine, I decided to get one for myself. After using that I realised I couldn't get the professional look of edging with just the sewing machine. And my mom has an old Yamato industrial serger which I have used before but couldn't do a proper job of using it until I learned some serging techniques on youtube and made some singlets for my dad. But being a 3 decades old machine, it wasn't up to par. So after a few weeks of thinking if I should get a new serger (Since this is more a hobby and wasn't sure how long it will last) I decided to pull the trigger and got a Juki MO-644D serger. Best decision I have made. I think my set up is complete. Will start doing some T shirts and Polo shirts and stuff soon. This hobby is addictive. Lol!

A serger is one machine I thought I’d NEVER WANT, because I’m not a garment sewer. That is until I saw what else you can do with one. You can sew quilt blocks together. You can sew seams just about perfect, with no fraying edges. And when I saw what you can do with a wave stitch, well, that sold me! Now I can hardly wait to get one.
The serger changed my life. I wear sportwear most of the time and now I can even sew my own t-shirts. I bought a second hand Brother 1034d and I love it! 🎉
I feel like I can't sew anymore without my serger, had 2 for over 20 yrs.love them.

I have had a Janome serger for a couple of years; it's taken me some time to get used to it, and I still don't use it to its full potential, but I fully agree with everything you say about them.
I would only add that, when you're working with a fabric that frays a lot and want to French seam your make, using the serger in the first step (wrong sides together) improves the durability of your final result and saves time (stitching and cutting simultaneously 😍) and you don't get to see the serged edge...
I own the same brother serger on the left, (color coded). I don’t know what I would do without it. Essential tool in my sewing room.

If you like sewing knits it’s so great. I still use a normal sewing machine for some knit finishes though. Cause you are so right Alisa, the machines compliment rather than replace each other.
And yes you gotta make friends with your serger 😊 it’s temperamental, it’s snappy, can hurt you if you don’t treat it right, and you gotta work around it’s curiosities -But when you do make friends it’s a reliable, flexible, interesting and lovable friend! 🥰🧵😄🤓❤️
I completely agree with your comment. I too have a Bernina but that was after experiences with Singer, Juki, New Home, Janome, which I all gave up. And friends? Yes, on my worst days, it still is my friend. ;-)

I bought a serger a year ago . I was very intimidated and anxious, however I read the instructions and also found some good tutorials as to how to thread and sew on it. I LOVE IT!!! Threading is now no problem and I use it in conjunction with my sewing machine. I have used your tutorials to make several patterns and totally used the serger to construct the garment. Thank you for your great instructions and inspirations!!!!

I really hate threading the overlocker! But your video is making me want to try it again... my mom also hates using it so she said that I can have hers 😂. We’ve had it for probably more than 20 years!
I totally get it. But you can do the tie off method. Then it makes it super easy

When I first got my serger, I was scared to death of it. Had lots of sewing machines but this was like something from outer space. My best girl friend took the time to teach me about operating it. Now I'm I'm not sure I could sew without one. Like you, this was a gift from my husband. I have had the same one since the year 1998. I love it and will probably have it until it falls apart. Love your show
I bought an old Toyota serger from the 90s at a garage sale for $25. I absolutely love it! I was afraid of it at first, but I am so glad I overcame that and tried it. So much easier than doing a zig zag or overlook on my standard machine (which is also 30 years old). i can't imagine being without it now, and I have no desire to replace either of my machines with newer ones!

I would one buy one just for the speed but I don’t like the finishes with the serger .I like couture finishes much better .

Patricia, hi! Great to hear that you love couture techniques and in your case - I would skip the serger, it cannot provide you what you want for the couture finished and a sewing machine is enough for those. What is your favorite couture seam finishing?
Awesome video Alisa! I mostly sew with knits and only used my sewing machine up until last Fall. I was so intimidated to try one, but once I learned some basics at a local Fabricville demo (especially on how to thread it) it helped a lot. I also found an instructional video for my exact model Brother serger and refer to it often. Life. Changing. I have a Brother sewing machine too. #teambrother 😆
In the beginning stages of sewing with a Brother Machine, looking into a serger when I get good enough at regular sewing. This is so helpful!
Just to add to the list of useful things a serger can do. I quilt and I like to wash most of my fabric. The problem that a serger solves is the raveling that fabric does in the washer. I have ordered the brother 1034DX and after watching several videos this one is the most informative. I will be serging the edges of my yardage before washing it and I can see a lot of time and anxiety lifting by doing so. Thank you for your wonderfully informative video.

I recently bought the serger on the left on sale and was too intimidated to use it. A kind quilt guild member did a serger “intervention” for two of us, and now I’m loving it for zipping through pillow cases for a charity! I want to use some of the other stitches, but for now, I’m really impressed with the ease of use. Threading is not intimidating now that I know to loosen the tension and treat the needle threads differently. My only complaint is that the machine is very noisy, and reflects the low price. It’s kind of the Easy Bake Oven version of sergers. But it works smoothly, so mission accomplished.
I bought the Brother 1034dx in August (my 1st serger) and love it. It takes too long with my sewing machine to finish the edges. I fell in love with it the first time I used it. I had always wanted one but couldn't justify the cost. It's easy to thread. It's reasonably priced and love all the cool things it does. I love your videos. Learned a few new tricks watching them. TX.

I picked up a really nice older used Janine 634D for fifty bucks at my independent fabric store…it has sat for SIX MONTHS because as you say, I was afraid of the beast. Last night I decided to tackle threading it…took a bit of time the first time…but not terribly difficult…I just followed the diagram on the machine. I ran a chain..it worked! Then, the moment of truth: I tested a scrap. I was AMAZED how beautiful the finish was and ANGRY at myself for not diving in as soon as I purchased it 😂 I’ll be trying my first serger project this weekend. Thank you for taking the fear out of “the beast”.
I have a Pfaff Hobbylock 756 and it is at least 25 yrs old and works like a charm. Best investment i did when i started out my 'sewing-career' :)
I've had a server for more than 10 years now and it scares me. It sits in its box in storage to this day. Watching you today makes me want to go find it and dust the spiders off and figure it out. I'll let you know if I get brave!!! 😌
I had an old Elna that I got from an estate. I could never figure out how to thread it. I eventually sold it and found a used Babylock Imagine with air threading. That’s been a life saver. I will definitely spend the money on one with air threading. I still need to learn more about using it, but I really want to make clothing, especially tops, skirts, and dresses.
I have a White brand serger that I've had for 23 years.. I also a Juki serger that's about 3 yrs old and it's a beast! A must have for heavier fabrics
I also have two sergers, one 3 thread and one 4 thread. I think I bought my first one in 1985 and is still my "go to" if it will do what I need to do. I keep one threaded with white thread and the other with black unless I am making something special or expensive. I have many thread colors available but with tee shirts and simple sewing I really don't bother to change colors that often. I only sew for family so it normally is not a big issue for me. When my children were younger and I was doing prom dresses and wedding dresses I was not so casual. LOL I just found your channel a few days ago and have enjoyed it very much.

Try it out!! I have never used a sewing machine or anything. I bought a serger back in June and it sat in the box until 2 weeks ago. I was scared to use it and finally said let me get this out and try it. I love it. Super easy to use. Now I'm like damn I could have been doing stuff all this time.
I use a Juki 4 thread serger that I was gifted by my sister in law after she stopped sewing for her little girls. That means it is about 40 years old, and still going strong.

For a while I thought you were gonna say how overestimated it is but hell nah, it is so underestimated, everytime people sew knits with regular sewing machine I'm like noooooo, why not use a serger, itis so satisfying and makes such perfect seams, love sergers
I totally LOVE my sergera, but I did not want to be biased and wanted to show it how it is - why you need it and why you don't. But yes - sewing knits with it - it is a breeze!!!

My sewing machine is Singer HD Denim and I really do not like using the zigzag as
finishing my seams. I know it's a lot to learn and a serger seem to be complex but
as you said if you can do it then I can too!! LOL thank you so much!! I would really

I prefer finishing seams the old fashioned way and don't sew much in the way of knits, but for $15 I could hardly pass up the Singer serger I got at the thrift shop a few weeks ago.

I just bought one today for 50 bucks and it was already threaded thank God it's a white 299 and it works beautiful I know nothing about it except that I'm going to learn about it I'm just glad it was threaded this thing works good I think it's a cross between a double needle sewing machine and two chain stitchers in a nightmare but I still like it

Thank you for sharing this. I had my Brother 1034D for a few years now. But the serger you have is 1034DX, I'm surprised it doesn't have the lever to disengage the knife, like the older (I think), 1034D. That's a great idea to practice on scrap first....I sometimes forget to do that 🤦🏾♀️
When I was shopping for sergers, I was led to believe that the only difference between the 1034D and 1034DX was that the DX had an LED light. This is not the case. I pulled up the manual for the 1034DX and while it looks very similar to the 1034D, there are many differences. Some of the controls have been moved. In the case of the knife, instead of the slider on the left of the machine, there is a lever behind the looper door.
That's exactly that - you have to open the machine and remove it manually - which is not a big deal.... But if you all of the sudden. Red to lower the knife as you are sewing - yeah... Can't do that...

Keep trying. Many would love to be in your place having a serger because you will really have a nice and clean finish with serger.
Hi Alisa, I have found the video for the sergers really interesting but can you explain what the three dials were for at the side. I know one was for the blade. Can you make another video on how to thread a serger, use a serger and what all the bells and whistles are for.
I've had my Brother 3034D overlocker (serger) for about 12 years now and it gets used nearly every week. I use it when making waistcoats, shirts and soft furnishings. I use it to seal the raw edges of fabric before I wash it. I've seen heirloom sewing on a serger but have no need for that. I have even sewn zippers with my overlocker so it can be done, just not as well as a sewing machine.
I, too, have two sergers, also both Brothers (one of them, also a Designio). My older one lost one of the tension wheels, so I re-thread it and use it only as a rolled hem machine. Good video! Stay well.

If you can afford to get a Babylock self threading serger do it. I love serging, but I had a serger that (no exaggeration) took me 30 minutes to thread. If you did not thread it in the proper sequence you would have to start all over again. The Babylock saved the day. With the air threader for the loopers it took me no time at all. You also do not have to fool with tensions. Now I love serging again. No this is not sponsored by anyone. Wish it would have been because it is not cheap. If you have patience then any good serger will do. I just lack patience and want to get to work fast without any hassle.
I have a Baby Lock Victory. It has automatic air threading and automatic tension. I wouldn't get anything other than a Baby Lock.
Agree 1000 percent. I replaced my Bernina 1150 serger with the BabyLock Ovation 4 years ago. Could not be happier. Air threading is genius. I LOVE LOVE my Bernina 440 sewing machine but the Bernina serger was a dread to use for fear of having to rethread it. Once I purchased my Babylock serger, I even questioned replacing my sewing machine but my research deducted that Bernina is the top in sewing machines.
@@sandracrig378 I had a Brother 3034D, which was a great serger, but every time a thread broke or I had to rethread it, not-so-nice words came out of my mouth. My hubby said I should buy a new serger that would be easier to thread, so I got the Victory.
I bought the Brother 4 thread you show here. I used it a bit, and its been sitting for a couple of years. I just pulled it out to make clothes and can't find the instruction book. I know its here somewhere! Too stubborn to get another one, but this is a timely vid. I'll keep looking.

I bet if you went to the brother website they would have an electronic version of the manual you can download if you can't find the paper one!

I thank you for your great video. I was debating buying a Serger as I want to get back into making my own household goods like comforter covers, curtains, roman shades and other things since my house is over a hundred and twenty years old and the wood trim around the windows is exquisite and I don't want to cover it up. The windows are also not standard sizes so I find myself buying something and having to shorten or narrow them. I also inherited furniture that is not standard sized (special order mattresses are not cheap) and like my window trim finding modern made bedding is just too complicated to make the adjustments required. I can easily adjust the sheet size but it just doesn't work with comforter covers (I accidentally found a feather comforter that is off sized at Costco and it fits yeah.) and the price of paying someone else to make them when I just need to apply the knowledge that I obtained from my Mother who was a professional seamstress and who would have killed to have a Serger. I buy fabrics on line as I like soft silky feeling fabrics such as Chenilles and Shangtungs and I don't want to make a mistake with that expensive a fabric. I like the idea of a nice clean edge and I had not realized that a Serger also cuts the excess fabric off. I think I will dig out the sheets that haven't been adjusted to fit as of yet and my store of odds and ends of fabric to practice on before I commit to using the Serger on more expensive fabric once I get using the Serger down pat. You are also correct about finding the manuals for older machines. I also work with wood and I inherited a few of my Dad's old tools and I have even found manuals for a 30 year old router, not to mention a few other manuals or parts for old appliances. I love the internet.

Hi there, just discovered your videos and love them! I have the Brother Serger 1034D with the multi color disks and yes you can disengage the knife! It is on the left of machine exactly like your designer model. I bought it at least 15 years ago. I’m enjoying it! Thank you.
Hi, thank you, my models is 1034DX, not 1034D, and there is no knife switch on the side of the serger, yoy can lower it only by opening the front panel.

No worries, I think there is only 1 or 2 differences between D and DX models and that is one of them :)

Even though I’ve had my serger for a long time I haven’t used it enough . I would love it if maybe you can make a video on when to serge, before sewing pieces together or after garment is sewed , or does it depend? I have made a few mistakes and get frustrated. Most info say serge first but then you have wide seams. Any advice?Thank you!
The Brother Designio doesn’t exist anymore, it was discontinued.😢😢😢 I would like to know if there is another one similar or as good as that Brother. Now I’m sad. 😮 thank you so much for your help anyway.

I have a 20 year old babylock air thread. I love it. Babylocks are made by brother. I have 3 brother sewing machines and a babylock serger

Great video. I just got a hand-me-down Brother 1034D serger from my sister and am loving it. I was so excited when my first threading lead to a successful seam! I was worried that it would be too complicated and I would struggle with threading it. But no problems!
However, now I'm really curious why you have two sergers?
I have,a serger about several years ago. Bet I have not tried using over 3 or 4 times. Threading that thing is stressful.
Yes, no one indeed has to have a serger. There are other ways to finish a seam.
However. personally, I prefer having a serger because my sewing projects are so
much more professionally finished with a serger. I use my serger a lot to get my
money's worth.

I just bought my first sewing machine the other day. I tried serging with the sewing machine but it's too slow :D I want the professional look on my work. I think I'll get one. Haha. Just for hubby and hopefully turns into a small business :)
My Brother 1034D, which is pretty inexpensive, has sliding gauge on the left side to lower the knife blade. It is really easy. Yours looks like mine; so I'm puzzled that yours won't release the knife.
Jacq, yeah.. Mine is the DX model, slightly different from yours and it does not do that... I have looked... I can adjust it manually, actually take it out, which is EASY but the other Serge does it with a slide of a button, which is EASIER. LOL :)

Ana, hi! I have the coverstitch too, also a gift form my hubby... it is expensive, oh my, I would never get it for myself, BUT I love it, I really do, I use it a lot and it does make it easier to hem the knits!
I’m planning to buy a cover stitch machine once I retire, when I’ll have more time to sew. I was planning on age 66-1/2, but 65 is looking nicer all the time!
I got mine a couple of years ago ad now I can't live without it! I also use it for basting and hemming jeans

Hey there, Suzanne! He he, I was going to tell the story but then my little one woke up from the nap - and man... you can't record anything with a 2-yr old being awake. But basically - the timing on my first serger got off slightly - my fault, I used it a lot for 5 yrs, we are talking almost every day and when the timing (how all elements work in a serger by looping the threads and being at th right place at the right time) got off I attempted to fix it myself instead bringing it to the repair shop right away. Then husband decided to take a look, and well - you know where it goes. So right before X-mas we had to take it to the shop because we had no hope for it anymore... I was a little upset that I had no serger, but nothing too major, however my husband felt really bad that he contributed to the further breakage of the machine and we even got into an argument because he would not listen to the fact that the sreger has to be threaded a certain way... so he went to Wal-mart and got me another serger, which I was going to return in a few weeks as soon as mine is fixed.... guess what, it took them 6 months.... they forgot about my serger and would not return the calls. So yeah, now I have 2 sergers :)
