Thank you so much. To quote my grandmother, "you are never too old to learn something new". I'm 76 and have been sewing for over 65 years. Love from NC.
I have been sewing for over 60 years, so I figured I'd just watch for the pleasure of listening to you and wouldn't pick up anything new. But I had forgotten about the upside down threading for darts, it never occurred to me to make a decorative pattern by combining utility stitches or use the triple straight stitch to make topstitching show up!
Always a pleasure to visit your store. I'm 81, been sewing since I was 5, but you can never know everything. Thank you for sharing sewing machine secrets, all new to me. I so enjoy all your videos, such a pretty young woman, with a great personality to match your teaching techniques and talent.
73 (sewing 60+ years) and never knew what that little button on the foot was for. Have been making a patio enclosure with shade cloth and zippers to allow it to be rolled open or zipped closed my sewing machine hated the job especially the lumpy bits. Still working on a similar swimming pool cover will be so helpful. Thanks Alisa
Hi Alisa, great tips, thank you! Another way to enhance top stitching, if you don't have dedicated top stitching thread, is to use two spools of your regular thread through your needle. A top stitching needle is handy for this because it has a bigger eye so it's easier to get two threads through your needle.
❤❤❤❤❤I’m not even halfway through this video, and I’m already blown away with your tips. I’ve been sewing most of my life (I’m 79!), and some of these are brand new to me. I love all your videos and have so many saved on a RUclips playlist. Thanks for ALL your videos. Five hearts for this video.❤❤❤❤❤
These tips are amazing !!! I have been sewing for years and did not know anything about any of these...you are awesome !!! Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge with us... ❤
I learned so much! Using the bobbin thread for darts amazed me! Embroidering with a regular machine! Your embroidered sleeves pattern was beautiful, BTW! Thank you so much
I have been sewing since I was 12 and that makes 55 years (shocked myself by admitting that!!!) and EACH of those tips is news to me!!!! Wow! I am impressed by your knowledge every time I watch one of your videos. Thanks, Alisa. You rock! cheers from New Brunswick, Canada
I have a Bernette too, I love it! Mine is a B37 but still a beautiful machine! I thought I didn’t need all these decorative stitches that the B38 comes with…now I am thinking of buying a second sewing machine and wondering if I should get one with more decorative stitches. I do use them but not that often. But your white blouse with navy decorative stitches made me go: “wow!!”
Thank you Alisa... I did not know these wonderful tips. I am finishing the lining on my shacket and plan making the buttonholes next. I got my buttonhole foot out last night to make the practice buttonholes. I have another use for this foot and others totry out. I always learn something new from your very 'thoughtful' videos.
These are great tips and all new to me. As someone who is getting back into sewing after many years the tools and creative techniques are wondrous. Thank you.
Great video. I ordered a used copy of the 101 secrets because I Iove sewing books too. I knew about the black button as a leveler. But, I didn't know the correct way to engage it. While watching your lesson, I went Aha! that is why I struggle to get it to work. I paused the video while I ran back to look at my sewing machine. Yes, there is a solid looking button hole which probably is a darning stitch. Score! Thanks for breaking down the process of embroidery using the machine. As I have said before, I loved how you used it on the white blouse. Sewing with the bobbin thread has to be my favorite tip though. That is a nice tool to have in my tool bag.
Yay, I am so happy that you ordered the book, I love the Singer series. I have my mom's Singer book that is decades old - so many useful things. My copy is used, too, I think I got it for a few dollars - and it is a steal! With the little knob - it takes a little maneuvering to press it just right, but after a few times it will be like a second nature. I use it very often, but then I wondered why they make this little knob only on the zig-zag foot? Ah, so many questions :) oh, also, I can't remember right now if I mentioned it or not, but there is a Members Extra Deep Dive for the white blouse - all about pattern, sleeves, and every obstacle that I had with it :)
Alisa!!! 💡💡💡 You just gave me a wonderful idea to finish off my slip. I'm drafting a slip and I have been searching for some decorative lace to put on the bottom of my slip, but I'm going to use 1 or 2 of my decorative stitches on my sewing machine! Thank you! I love watching you. Because I have 2 little granddaughters that are near me. And you give me wonderful ideas just sew clothes for them.😊🙏🏼😊 Have a blessed week and happy sewing!😊
I learned some new things. I have an embroidery hack for you. You can create circles by using a thumb tack taped to your sewing machine that you use to hold the fabric as you spin it around.. You can look it up for a better explaination. I've made linked circles across the bottom of garments this way. It would be cute on tea towels too. They sell a gadget for this but the thumb tack works just fine.
Wow! No. I have never seen a sewing machine threaded backwards. Great way to make darts. None of my sewing machines have those new features. However, you have given me new ideas to look for when shopping around. Thank you.
I had no idea what the self-leveling button was! Thank you. Also, great tip on the triple straight stitch for topstitching! So much easier than using two spools of thread when you’re out of a topstitch thread.
I was making a top one night, and experimented sewing around the yoke with a decorative stitch in a bright color, It was an intricate stitch, and I noticed that the design varied in places, especially around the corners. Next time I want to embellish a top, I think I'll more or less make bias tape, or rectangular tape, and run the design on the tape and stitch it where I want it. Another use for left over fabric!
Good thinking! You are so right, hen you go around corners because you are taking a linear designs and conforming it to a curve - it probably will vary even more on spread out designs, and probably less on those designs that repeat more often/are smaller.
I've recently bought the b38 machine and I am happy to see you're giving tips using the same machine. I didn't know any of this tips and I am looking forward for more🤩 thank you veri much❤
I am in my 60s and have been sewing since I was 12. I didn't know the purpose of that little black button. Something that I have done is use embroidery stitches and sparkling silver thread on a denim jacket for my daughter. I did the back panel and the pocket flaps on the front. I got a lot of inquiries about making that denim jacket for others but I don't sew for others as I tend to be a teeny bit of a perfectionist, hahaha, and would find it too stressful. One of the other things I have done with the embroidery stitches is to use a twin needle and different coloured threads. It makes for a pretty result but you must be careful and check the width of the pattern selected so that it does not cause the twin needle to move outside of the hole on the needle plate as it will break the needle and may damage your machine. I am new to your channel and love seeing the things you have made. You are a beautiful sewer. Thank you for sharing your ideas.
Hi Alisa, I did a tutorial video on the presser foot with the black button to go over bulky seams. Please stop by and take a look at it! Have a blessed week, and happy sewing.😊 Wow! The button put for darning! I wish I had heard about this a couple of months ago when I was trying to mend a tear in one of my garments. I saw that darning stitch on my sewing machine, but I didn't realize you could use your button hole foot to darn.
Gotten behind in watching videos; this is third video of the afternoon from your site. All videos were educational & inspirational. Thank you & keep them coming.😊
This was a most interesting video. Love this type of shared info which encourages me to try some of these techniques myself. And this video can stay in my video library stash for future reference. Thank you for the video and the great recording shots and angles.
Very ingenious, I had no idea we could sew backwards! I liked the idea of combining rows of stitches to make wider patterns, that white blouse with blue stitching was gorgeous
Great tips. I have the B38 (which I love). Have used the triple stitch often but was enlightened with the presser foot use- had no idea how to use it. I always use my hump jumper.
This was a GREAT video! Loved the triple straight stretch tip. I’ve not used that Stich before! And the black button that takes place of the hump jumper? Had no clue that did that!!!
Wonderful video. I have that book. The three row stitching is good for attaching straps or bag handles instead of reversing. Your sewing room is so lovely am going to emulate yours. Lovely tutorial
Your video was so educational and informative!!! I didn’t know any of these tips you mentioned !!! I learned so much!!! Thank you for all your wonderful suggestions!!!!
I’ve been sewing for 50 years and I also hv that book! Never knew abt the bobbin sewing (or if I did, I forgot! 😂 ) or mending w the buttonhole foot & that stitch! I knew abt the button, but didn’t know the presserfoot needs to be raised when setting it! Nice job & TFS! I’m new to your channel. 🌷
My pleasure :) I am happy to share the things that I learn while I sew, that self-leveling knob really helps, especially when top stitching the sleeve where you go over the yoke part and of course in many other instances as well!
That was greatly appreciated as I am afraid to sew clothing and am going to watch many more of your videos. I just might be able to make a garment or two or three. Two days ago I purchased a simply made blouse that I know will not hold up to many washings, wishing I had the confidence to make it, maybe I can now by learning some techniques, thank you
The sewing from bobbin thread is new. I have used decorative stitches before. When preparing and attaching patch pockets, I hem the pocket, the find the placement, fold the edge of the pocket and press. Now fold the raw edge to meet the fold. I start sewing the pocket down with a short satin stitch to reinforce the change to the straight stitch until a come back to the end with another satin stitch to complete.
1. I heard it some time ago, never used it. 2. Just used it. 3. Never got to use it successfully on knits. But on woven? Wow! 4. I have 2, no one works. 😂 I use cardboard or fabric. 5. Nope, new for me! Thanks, As always nice to see you!
I never knew the purpose of that little spring on the back of the zipper foot. Your top stitching hints with be helpful for me too. Alisa, the top you are wearing with sleeves made from a scarf is very pretty!
If you can do all these neat things with your little machines, just think what extraordinary things you could with with the Altair for instance. Its my dream.think about it young lady.really enjoy your videos
Thank you for all the tips!!! The new one to me was the foot with the spring on it. Also I didn't realize the machine will do darning with the buttonhole foot, but I would probably just use zigzag or just free motion quilt over it the hole.
Love all those hints and tricks! I have that Singer book and looked up about sewing the darts and well I just learnt something today that I did not know. I have a Janome sewing machine and sewing with the buttonhole foot to do darning thats amazing as sure wonder when I did not see that in my book but there it is in black and white. Hello, new subscriber here.😊. Thankyou for your informative tips. Thank you for explaining the little black button because I always thought it was some kind of adjustment screw and I didn't want to mess with it lol

Thanks, As always nice to see you!
I loved this video! I learned many new tips and tricks. I especially like the dart tip.
I never knew the purpose of that little spring on the back of the zipper foot. Your top stitching hints with be helpful for me too. Alisa, the top you are wearing with sleeves made from a scarf is very pretty!
As usual, you've taught me something new today. Thanks.
Wow this was great! Especially the self leveling foot - I thought that spring was there to make it harder to sew 😂.
Wonderful tips! Thank you very much. Your work is beautiful.

Great video with sewing secrets. Thanks
Thank you for all the tips!!! The new one to me was the foot with the spring on it. Also I didn't realize the machine will do darning with the buttonhole foot, but I would probably just use zigzag or just free motion quilt over it the hole.
Very very very great informative video.
Great tips. I learn something new all the time from your videos! I never knew about most of these tips!
Darning will be much easier it is then silly me doing things differently to patch up a hole.
