This is so helpful! I'm about to purchase a serger and this video has boosted my confidence to go ahead and try it! Excellent video for us visual learners, thank you!
I'm glad to hear that you found the video helpful and that it boosted your confidence in purchasing and using a serger! It's great to know that the visual aspect was beneficial for you. Wishing you all the best with your serging adventures - happy sewing!💜
Thank you. I actually bought a ready-made t-shirt from a store with the flatlock stitch exactly like that on the sleeves and hem, and I had never seen it before, it looks nice.
The techniques you covered here are really helpful thank you. I am empowered to start some knit garments on my serger that I've only been using to finish inside seams on woven garments.
I sew my sleeves in before I sew the sideseams, it feels easier to me. But the tip on how to make a flatlock stitch with my overlocker is a new idea to me, have to try that out next time I make a new T-shirt. Thank you for a good video❤😊
You're welcome! Don't worry, sergers can be a bit intimidating at first, but with practice, they become a valuable tool. Feel free to ask if you have any questions! 😊
Yes just take it one step at a time. Sergers sew fast but you can go slow with it. They are loud and sound more complicated and like big machinery, but you will get used to it. Just read your manual and follow it like a recipe. You can do it!!!
It has never occurred to me to use a flatlock stitch for hemming! Thank you so much! I have been agonising over whether to invest in a coverstitch machine but will try this first. 👍💕
I'm so glad it was helpful! I also have a free "thread your serger" challenge that might be interesting if you're new to serging :-) www.sewingandthecity.co/tysc
Oh my goodness, THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤ You’re a lifesaver. I’m a newbie to sewing, and Your instructions helped me to get it right the first time. I appreciate you😘 The flat lock looks beautiful btw. You just saved me so much time. I’m a single mother, so time is of the essence. A lot of the work I was doing on the sewing machine, is about to be transferred on over to my serger.
Thanks, that is a great well described video. And who knew getting off the round could be so easy ! Wondering what the reason was to sew the sleeves in the round, instead of all in one line with the front and back panel. Thanks!!
Sewing sleeves in the round can offer better fit and range of motion. It's often a design choice, but sewing all in one line is also valid depending on the style. Keep sewing and experimenting! 💜
Thank you. Just pulled out my serger and got it threaded it just a simple white speedylock. My book does not say how to do flatlock. I am ecstatic to finish my t shirt dress with this info. Thank you thank you thank you
Good video I have been trying to learn the flat lock stitch but with no success. I am still confused about the threading but it doesn't go into it in detail. Any chance someone could clarify the step by step threading with tension suggestions. Thank You.
For the flatlock stitch, you just need your regular 3 thread overlock stitch threaded as normal. The only tension change you make is to remove all tension from your needle, as in set it to 0. Then you're ready to flatlock ❤️
@@SewingandtheCity Thank you Thank you I finely managed to master it my problem was not just knowing how to thread properly but I was engaging the Spreader tool and that was incorrect, Wish I knew when to engage that tool and what it's purpose is. Thanks again for your quick response and patience. Anne
Awesome, very practical and it looks good! I've been looking for a fast way to put together lounge shirts and knit fabric, this video is super easy to follow👍
I'm serging up my first knit project and it's going smoothly thanks to your helpful video. What is that little ruler on your machine called? I'm searching it online and couldn't find anything like it
Oh I'm so happy to hear!! The little ruler actually came with my machine. You might be able to Google your machine and add "ruler" or "seam gauge" and see if something comes up. If not, a piece of masking tape carefully placed could work in a pinch 🙂
Wow! Thank you! I never knew my serger could do flatlock seams. I'm already thinking about the tops I have that I can run home and shorten after work. Does this work if you don't disengage the cutter?
Great video! And I'm really thankful I found you! Have loved the patterns I've purchased and am looking forward to making the tshirt. Quick question... do I need to use a jersey needle or knit needle on the overlocker? I know I change it on the regular sewing maching. Thanks for your insight. 🙂
Thank you so much for your kind words! I’m so glad you’re enjoying the patterns. For the overlocker, you’ll still want to use a ballpoint or stretch needle, just like on your regular sewing machine. It helps prevent snags and ensures smoother stitching on knit fabrics. Happy sewing! 😊
Great tutorial! I just bought a serger and made my very first T-shirt yesterday. I’m at the point of hemming and just had a question about the flat lock. Do I unthread the right needle? Or do I just drop the tension on the left needle? Thank you for your videos. They’re so helpful.
I've had my serger for 4 years or more and have never even taken it out of the box. Honestly, I'm very intimidated by the machine but I think this might be a good place to start. What Material did you used for the t-shirt?
Stretch knit or even a french terry can be easy to sew. Also, here is a video all about sewing with knits that might help: ruclips.net/video/AyMnnjKWIbQ/видео.html
Hi, I just bought a serger and I’m not sure if I need to secure the seams end with something? I’m worried the seam will get unravel and messy if I don’t do the reserve stitches just like regular sewing machine?
Congrats on your serger! If your seam is going to intersect with another, you don't need to worry about securing them, serger stitches, like the 3 or 4 thread overlocks are pretty strong! If you don't hem or intersect a seam, you can use fray check which is almost like a glue, or you can make extra long thread tails at the end of your seam and use a hand sewing needle and bury your thread tails.
Thanks for commenting, Jean! It looks like the links were at some point truncated and as RUclips autofills from my main setting, each video had the broken links gahh! I really appreciate your comment because I wouldn't have known. I went through and updated them 💜
very nice video but please shorten your neck band a bit so it doesn't ripple at the neck and lays flat. It was all folded over and wonky, in the finished shot.;a quick look in the mirror would fix it!
This is so helpful! I'm about to purchase a serger and this video has boosted my confidence to go ahead and try it! Excellent video for us visual learners, thank you!

yaaay! thanks 💜 if you have more questions let me know!
I took your class on this at the sewing expo earlier this month and this video will help remind me of the techniques when I make another t-shirt.
Thank you! This was my first serger project on a brand new machine and it turned out awesome.
😍😍😍💜
Love your techniques, artistry , energy level and enthusiasm for sewing. Keep up the great work. Thanks.
Thank you so much!
I'm new to overlock and it will be useful to show more details how to drop left needle because i have no idea how to do it or how to cut fabric.
Hi Lena! I have a full overlock course that goes into detail: www.sewingandthecity.co/simple-serging
Great video! I just finished surging my Rivington t-shirt and it turned out great! I love it! This is the best t-shirt pattern ever!! Thank you!!
Awwww I'm so glad to hear!!!! 🥰
Thank you for the video ❤ could you please talk about difference between serger machine and coverstitch machines
I'll keep it in mind for next time 💜
Thank you. I actually bought a ready-made t-shirt from a store with the flatlock stitch exactly like that on the sleeves and hem, and I had never seen it before, it looks nice.
Awesome, now you can do it, too! ❤️
I love this video thank you! I finally invested in a serger and have been making so many rookie mistakes. This video is full of so many helpful tips!!
I'm so glad! Happy serging!
Thank you so much. I was gifted a serger and am just learning how to use it. I just finished a semi wonky tank top using this video.
Oh, that's great! what about the result? I would love to know 😍💜💜
Very will done - easy to follow - I sent this to my friend how is just learning her serger
Thank you! I hope it helps your friend with her serger learning journey. Happy sewing! 💜
The techniques you covered here are really helpful thank you. I am empowered to start some knit garments on my serger that I've only been using to finish inside seams on woven garments.
Wonderful! Thanks for tuning in ❤️
I was able to alter my t-shirt with this, and it looks professional! thanks
Awesome!!!
I'm new to sewing and this video answer all my questions about overlocking a t-shirt.
Great to hear! Happy sewing!

You're welcome! Happy sewing and enjoy trying out the flatlock stitch! 💜
Thank you, I am trying to build up some confidence before I buy a serger. If you like yours, helpful to put the name of the one you have.
I love mine! I have a blog about it here: sewingandthecity.com/how-i-chose-my-new-serger-and-how-its-going/
I love your enthusiasm and your voice is great to listen to as well! I look forward to learning much from your videos ❤
Thank you so much for tuning in and your kind comment, Carrie! 💜
So cool! I'm picking up my serger tomorrow and I can't wait to try this
Awesome! Enjoy your serger!
I just bought a serger and I am completely CLUELESS about how to use it. I get scared and use my sewing machine 😂 thank you so much for this!
You're welcome! Don't worry, sergers can be a bit intimidating at first, but with practice, they become a valuable tool. Feel free to ask if you have any questions! 😊

Or take a class at your local onsite products and repair sewing machine/serger shop. It helps
I just got mine too and thought you always had to go fast! Thanks for a great tutorial. What type fabric did you use for the tshirt?
I'm new to a sewing machine I don't have a over locker machine, thank you 💕 so much for your tips it will help me when I start to use one
I'm so glad!

That's so great! I really love using this stitch on my t-shirts now. Have fun with it :-)
EXCELLENT video ~ this was exactly what I have been wanting to learn. Thank you!!

Awesome video Christine. Thank you! I've never used a serger and want to get one for things just like this 🤗
You are so welcome and thank you for your comment! A serger is great to have if you're sewing clothes :-)

Yes, it totally does! Just be sure not to cut your fabric 🙂💜
This was so great!! For the flatlock seam, did you take out one of the needles? I couldn't quite follow
I did! You just leave one needle in 💜
Great video! And I'm really thankful I found you! Have loved the patterns I've purchased and am looking forward to making the tshirt. Quick question... do I need to use a jersey needle or knit needle on the overlocker? I know I change it on the regular sewing maching. Thanks for your insight. 🙂

subscribed. i love you. lol, but fr. i need to make this and take any/all of your classes. self-taught sewer and now new to serging. :)
Thanks for subscribing and the love! Happy sewing and serging :-)
Oh thank you!! I'm really happy to have you here💜

Hi!! Thank you!! I use the same one that came with my machine too! 💜🌟
@@SewingandtheCity Thank you❤
Do you take out the right hand needle and thread when your doing the flat lock stitch
Yes! That's correct💜
Does your serger have a free arm? Would you recommend having one?
Mine doesn't and don't think I would pay more to have it 🙂 I've never had a situation when serging clothes when I've wished my serger had one
Your links are not working. Are any of your courses still available?
Thanks for commenting, Jean! It looks like the links were at some point truncated and as RUclips autofills from my main setting, each video had the broken links gahh! I really appreciate your comment because I wouldn't have known. I went through and updated them 💜
Nice! What tension is your serger on for this?
Where is the fabric from?
I got it from Joann's :-)
very nice video but please shorten your neck band a bit so it doesn't ripple at the neck and lays flat. It was all folded over and wonky, in the finished shot.;a quick look in the mirror would fix it!
Nice instructions, the music is terrible though.
thank you so much!! Well, it's hard to find something that everyone likes 🙏💜
Music is not great
